I am lucky enough to get the opportunity to try out Novem, Scivation's new pre-workout. Since starting to lift, I have fallen in love with pre-workout's. Sometimes going off of less than four hours of sleep is hard, so I love having the burst of energy right before I go to the gym to help me push myself as hard as I can.

Initial thoughts of Novem...

Appearance (powder): 5/5
Much better than Quake (no clumping).

Mixability: 5/5
Nobody should have any issues in this department!

Appearance (solution): 5/5
Looks like colored water.

Aroma: 5/5
Smells fantastic! Not really much else to say.

Texture: 5/5
Went down really nice. I didn't notice any non-dissolved powder when I as drinking it.

Mouthfeel: 5/5
Uhhh... it felt like liquid.

Flavor: 5/5
Usually I hate fruit punch, so I tried out the berry flavor first. It was really good, but left a similar aftertaste to Quake which I was never too fond of (is this just me?). However, today before doing this write-up I gave the fruit punch flavor a small sample... wow! I'm impressed. May be the first fruit punch flavored pre-workout that I actually enjoyed.

Sweetness: 5/5
Sweetness was fine. Obviously just add more or less water so it tastes how you like it.

Aftertaste: 3/5
I noticed a bit of an aftertaste with the berry flavor (is that just me?), but fruit punch seemed fine.

Effectiveness: 4/5
Felt really good throughout my workout. Not sure what it is, but the energy really does kind of slowly creep on you. It's strange because with most pre-workouts it's more like it suddenly hits you all at once.

Value: 5/5
20-40 servings for $24.99 (on the site I looked at) is very doable.

Overall Rating: 4/5
Good energy, but it could definitely use some some additional ingredients which aren't in it. I do really like the fact that it has creatine mono and beta alanine in it though.

Day 327 - 4/22/2011 - Rest

SUMMARY
Well remember how I said my diet was good yesterday? Yeah, it was pretty much the opposite today. I ended up spending almost the whole day with a couple friends and just ate like a normal person (crazy, right?). I got home around 6 and was exhausted so I took my rest day. I for sure got in enough protein, but calories were definitely higher than I would have liked (3000-3500?).

The thing is though, I am not necessarily upset about it. Without getting too personal, my depression which I have mentioned previously seems to be improving and I'm once again enjoying going out with friends. I'm not going to pretend and say that everything is perfect (far from it, actually). However, to me, the progress I've made mentally is much more important than some stupid lifestyle cut. I am going to continue to stay consistent with lifting while keeping diet an important part of my life, but it will not come before friends and actually living life. You are only young and in college once! Enjoy yourself!

Day 330 - 4/25/2011 - Cardio

SUMMARY
So you know those cardio sessions where you feel like you want to die? Yeah, today was one of those. A couple weeks ago I started running at 7 MPH for 30 minnutes, and it was easy. I bumped it up to 7.5 MPH the next week, still easy. Today I decided to try 8 MPH. For the first 20 minutes or so it was a piece of cake. However, by the time I got to 25 minutes, the fatigue started to set in. Now I am NOT one to give up easily, but by the time I got to 29 minutes I absolutely felt like I could not go for any longer without potentially hurting myself or fainting (seriously). I took a 1 minute rest, and then got back on the treadmill to finish that last minute! I was very upset that I couldn't do that last minute, but it happened. I'll get it next time!

On a side note, a couple friend of mine and I got a hotel in the cities this weekend from Friday to Saturday so I am not sure how my workouts will be affected. I will still get them in regardless, but I am not sure as far as when/where. I am looking forward to the getaway though. It should be a good time!

How are the pumps, vascularity, focus?
Can you compare this to any other pre-workouts you have taken (your app was loaded with them)?

What else are you noticing from Novem that aids towards your cardio/weights?

SUMMARY
Didn't get back from Minneapolis until around 11:00pm so I took my rest day today instead of tomorrow. Went to a few different clubs and just had an all-around amazing time.

Also, I am going to be doing something different as far as diet and training go. For training, I am still going to be doing something similar to what I am doing now, but it will be more of a four day split. I will also be focusing on heavy sets of 3 for the big lifts. For nutrition, I will no longer be meticulously tracking on DailyBurn. Instead, I will be counting calories based on what the package says/estimating unknown meals and basically just keeping a running total in my head. Throughout all this, I will make sure to get in enough protein.

Try dosing it in less liquid or taking it 30-45 minutes prior (or before then) to let it settle on you scooter. Hope to see some more "Current' updates and more regularly with detailed feedback. Hope your final exams go well.

Although this is pretty much expected, I can definitely tell there is a difference when Novem is taken on an empty stomach vs eating before-hand. The plus side (for some people) about that is it gives you a bit smoother energy during your workout rather than that jittery feelings (which I like). Pumps were good during today's workout too and that is saying something since I usually have difficulty getting a pump in my shoulders.

I agree 100% that novem taken on an empty or about 60-90 minutes after a meal is taken gives the best results in terms of energy. Others have told me that when taken around 30 minutes after a meal the effects are not as large in which I do agree. Glad to see the pumps/energy are living up to their name.

How would you compare novem so far to other pre-workouts that you have taken in the past?

Energy/Focus still isn't quite as good as a pre-workout with 1,3 in it, but for ones without... it's probably one of the best I've used. It is likely good that I get away from 1,3 anyways. Was definitely using a lot of it while it hasn't been studied very well.

Novem has less fillers than many other pre-workouts which I do like, but I do feel like it is lacking in the "pump" department.

Taste is great in comparison to other pre-workouts on the market.

SUMMARY
Sorry guys... My log is once again going to slim down to being not so detailed. I will no longer be posting any info about weight, gym, tanning, supplements, or calories. I am just going to be sticking to a summary, my workout, and supplement thoughts if I am doing a sponsored log. I have slowly been using this site less and less but would still like to be able to keep people up to date on my workouts and progress. I will occasionally include information about where calories are (haven't been being strict at all lately to be honest), where my weight is, etc.

Having said all that, workout felt really good today. Gotta love setting some PR's.

Was able to do 4 miles in 30 minutes today without much of an issue. Time for a new short term cardio goal!

Day 348 - 5/13/2011 - Chest/Triceps

SUMMARY
Note to self #1: Girls do NOT make good lifting partners.
Note to self #2: Don't trust anyone new to spot you when you are maxing out.

Today pissed me off. I planned to go for 210lbs on the bench (got 205lbs last week) so needless to say I asked for a spot. I see the guy in there really often and he has a solid base so I figured he would be okay to spot me. I told him at the start of the lift to help me off, and then DO NOT touch the bar unless it's squishing me. His response was "yeah man, definitely. That's exactly how I like it too". Oh, but guess what? I go down with the bar, and as SOON as I start going back up, he puts his hands on the bar and starts helping me up with it while saying the usual "It's all you man! I'm not doing anything! You got this!"

Was super pissed off. Are people really that clueless?

Energy/Focus still isn't quite as good as a pre-workout with 1,3 in it, but for ones without... it's probably one of the best I've used. It is likely good that I get away from 1,3 anyways. Was definitely using a lot of it while it hasn't been studied very well.

Novem has less fillers than many other pre-workouts which I do like, but I do feel like it is lacking in the "pump" department.

Taste is great in comparison to other pre-workouts on the market.

Brief comparison. Will be a bit more specific towards the end of the log.

The feedback is repetitive in most of the logs but that is a good thing because it shows the consistency from multiple people about the product. Energy, Pumps, Focus, and vascularity are all present regardless of how the individual looks or their overall goal which is key as far as feedback goes. Some people just have to figure out what is the best way to dose novem to reap the benefits, if Novem killed you with food close to a meal keep trying that out and see how it works for you. For me an empty stomach upon waking leaves me in the zone for a couple hours and through my first meal of the day which is crazy. Sometimes I have to look at my logbook and tell myself to put down the weights and leave the gym because I still have energy to keep going. Great stuff man, glad to see you finally caught up ;)

I think it's just a combination of multiple things. What I've eaten that day, how tired I actually am, and also the amount of time I've been using stims without a break. All play a fairly large role in how well it will effect me.

Cut is going eh... I'm hoping to get a little more on track one way or another (cut or bulk) when summer rolls around. I weighed in today at 177lbs so my weight hasn't really been fluctuating much lately at all (perhaps a slight increase). Just going to keep enjoying eating and lifting for now though (while making sure to get in enough protein).

Wow, running outside is a lot more entertaining, but definitely a lot more difficult when it is hot and humid. For today's workout, I ran on a trail for 15 minutes and then turned around and came back. The wind was really blowing against me on the way back so the total run took about 33 minutes.

Upon opening my container of Novem, I noticed that the powder is very fine and didn't have any issues with clumping like Quake did. As far as mixability goes when adding water, there always tends to be a little bit of powder that settles on the bottom no matter how hard you shake your drink. However, this is not noticeable when actually drinking it. Novem tastes great as well. When it comes to the sweetness, it's perfect and can obviously be adjusted depending on how much water you add. There is also hardly any aftertaste whatsoever which is different than many pre-workouts that are currently on the market. Most people won't even notice anything.

As far as overall effectiveness of the product goes, it did its job as far as energy goes considering this product contains a lot of caffeine, but it could definitely do a better job for me when it comes to helping with pumps. However, this is not primarily advertised as an NO booster so I'm not too disappointed. In the end, I am glad I had the opportunity to try out this product and will likely buy it in the future.
