Wow, friggin awesome squats! I was working to my max for the day and 305 was wayyy too explosive so I got super stoked and went for 325, ass down to the floor, booom, explode up, woo! :D

Other than that just finishing up on the filming project at school so a lot of movement there.

Jeez brah, what is your daily expenditure? Are you tracking with a device like the BB?

If I work (which is usually 6 days a week) its around 3800. Yup, with the BMF.

Protein is the hardest for me to hit and I'm not sure why. It's not even that high (218g minimum). Guess I just need to start firing up the grill more often.

damn...I stop at 275 because I dun feel like I'm going low enough...

Now that I'm always eating 250 over ACCURATE maintenance tho, I already notice increase in lifts...like skullcrusher/cgbp today, finally hit 10 reps all my sets at 75 lbs, so hopefully everything else will be goin up soon too

Dumb advice alert: this is my first time cutting/bulking. Thought I needed to eat more (want bigger arms for chainsaw comp) so I've bumped up cals. At gym this morning two guys told me I need to be cutting and doing more cardio. Before I keep going with higher cals, how should I make the decision when to cut?

Well pick a goal and go for that one strictly. Saying you have to cut AND do cardio is nonsense.


Two random douches approach a woman and tell her to diet harder and intensify the cardio...
We aren't actually taking these meat heads seriously now?

Adjust macro nutrient intake according to YOUR goals / prospective desires (the chainsaw comp).
If you require an increase in muscularity, assuming your caloric / macronutrient intake is appropriate, bulk the fawk away.

And when people ask me what my diet is like and I tell them..... They tend to think I am B.Sing and tell me I cant look like I do eating how I eat. I am clearly not in the condition of some of you guys but I try my best.

Someone forgot to tell me I need to only eat chicken and brocc 5x times a day every 3hrs and should only eat crabz around PWO meal. And if I eat a crabz past 8PM I will most likely wake up a fat ****.

Cardio is a fun activity at times but isnt the all ends to keep fat off. Id mostly likely take what they said with a grain of salt. Did they have Fatriceps and 6pack of flabby goodness?

I hate when I get asked what I eat. I get a brain fart thinking to myself.. should I troll them or try to educate them. I usually just say I eat foods I enjoy and hit my caloric goal. I've trolled like 2 bros because I overlooked them slamming a post workout shake previously LOL


This forum has clearly changed my outlook on eating. I felt stupid for eating 900 cals a day after reading what Julia is cutting on. Lots of info to try to absorb so putting all the research into use is iffy. Just when I think I've got it all figured out, someone tells me what a big mistake I'm making then it's mindf'king. Personally, I like cardio for calming me down so I've cut it in half. Both guys are trainers at golds and ex-bfs of a friend of mine. They like 'em skinny with DDs :)


That's a fantastic idea!!! Shall I video and post? They were dipsh*ts... iron looked at my pic and confirmed I'm fine to bulk. I hate asking for advice but glad to make sure I'm doing it right. (is happy now)

Yeah fawk that. I used to eat a sub 1000 calories a day and think I need to burn burn burn to get me some of dat muscle mass. I have learned a **** ton and half the time I am the D-Bag who is in a heated debate about some of the crap people spew out of there mouth.



Personally I still take heat from people. I will be taking out the trash at work and someone behind me will start saying "I lift things up and put things down" Or I get silly nick names. Some I find funny and brighten up my day but then other times I get comments from people who cant stand how I enjoy living my life.



Id hit it...... Mhhh on that note time to make some epic eats.

Damn dude, just gotta ignore the comments from others. I never get any negative comments from others, just always compliments and encouragement.

Saw you and realized I just needed to train smarter and eat more because there's no where left to drop cals. I'm pretty open to trying anything so I have to be careful lol.

Creatine is good, don't cut it out. Lift heavy, keep that overload, and create a reasonable caloric deficit!

As for the food, pftt nah, they were reese puffs, chex, crushed chocolate chip poptart and chocolate cheerios :)

Try slipping 10's under your heels. That's what I do to go super low

TBH, I didn't notice much of a difference in gym performance with the surplus, just scale and I started filling out a bit. I will be hitting 625-650g CHO soon because I think I can still fit out a tad more.

1. the bodybugg has no way of measuring internal thermic effect of food and is only basing its caloric burn on SKIN heat flux as well as accelerometry. That's like saying it should be able to detect insulin or testostrone fluxes. It is only a device that measures external factors.

2. leg size and form have nothing to do with each other. you can get hyoooge legs and have ****ty form. being anal about form and having leg size are correlative, not causative.

i'm pretty sure it does, I personally am gonna play around with it eventually to be sure, but one day when i barely ate anything (like 1400 cals) the next day my resting expenditure was lower

2. leg size and form have nothing to do with each other. you can get hyoooge legs and have ****ty form. being anal about form and having leg size are correlative, not causative.

But soon I am going to make a real New York style with FULL FAT Philadelphia and graham crackers crust, will not count macros not to get upset LOL.

Off days -> about maintenance* (+/-100, still need to get a hang of this), so about 500-700 kcal more than I used to eat
Workout days -> still 3000 kcal, which puts me 300 kcal over maintenance*

*what the Bodymedia tells me

Haven't gained (or lost) weight so far, but I feel fatter, lol.
n-th degree mind****. But I'll just stick with it and increase calories steadily every ten days - two weeks.

(btw: still haven't reached a single 3k day, even on the day when I was running like a mother****er for 45 minutes straight and went for 3 walks afterwards... ended up at 2980 or so)

So my mom is letting me order 2 packs of the Anaconda Protocol so I can take it twice a day, the bad news is we did have to rent out our house to a mime convention to pay for my monthly supplement bill, but I'm gonna be huge I'm telling ya. Anyways I gotta a question about IIFYM, can I use this in the night too or is this a morning thing? Because I've heard you're more insulin sensative at night than in the morning due to the change in the sky, anyways I'm getting pretty big so yeah. Cool talking to you, see you in the IFBB.

Brah, I was dieting like a retard; 1,800cals/day with intensive daily exercise when weightloss completely stopped.

Upped cals to 2,400 and stopped doing so much cardio and the weight is dropping like mad.. I may even have to raise it again soon if I don't balance out.

In other news, everyone is telling me to bulk now instead of my original plan. :(

remember, your body doesn't have a "24 hour clock" and say oh today is an off day and ill stop repair and recovery from previous bouts of exercise........i could see you eating maintenance if you were 1k+ on workout days, but your only 200ish.

When cutting, I prefer the increases in mood I notice when I keep dietary fat high. My spike in calories had me go from 100g carbs/day to 240g/day - and to be honest I haven't felt a huge difference.

With that said, you're bulking, you enjoy carbs -> fats, and the epic amounts of carbs per day you eat make me tune in nightly. :)

I'll try to answer before I pass out. Laying in bed with my iPhone. lol.

I took a trip to Brazil for 10 days a did some intensive work there. Disregarded all dieting. Ate really nutrient dense food and plenty of it. I was also working very hard 8-10 hours of the day so I was burning calories like crazy. I continued to eat what ever I wanted to on non working days, and the days going back to the states.

When I got back I had gained 6 pounds. I decided to start from there fresh, and ate more and did less cardio. Dropped all the trip weight within 5 days, and now less than I was before I left and continuing to drop.

Barring possible health issues, I don't know how I would be losing more weight while eating more and doing less - but it's happening.

I know Paul has some interesting studies on it that I've seen him post before.

I'll try to answer before I pass out. Laying in bed with my iPhone. lol.

I took a trip to Brazil for 10 days a did some intensive work there. Disregarded all dieting. Ate really nutrient dense food and plenty of it. I was also working very hard 8-10 hours of the day so I was burning calories like crazy. I continued to eat what ever I wanted to on non working days, and the days going back to the states.

When I got back I had gained 6 pounds. I decided to start from there fresh, and ate more and did less cardio. Dropped all the trip weight within 5 days, and now less than I was before I left and continuing to drop.

Barring possible health issues, I don't know how I would be losing more weight while eating more and doing less - but it's happening.

I know Paul has some interesting studies on it that I've seen him post before.

If I didnt need to get in epic aesthetic shape for my desired career I would totally work on just getting crazy massive lol. do it for all the lonely chinese food and sushi out there. you know how much CHO goes to bed alone and afraid every night? Btw, since taking your advice (slowly upping calories and carbs), according to my Bodymedia Fit, my burn was the highest ever yesterday. And my resting burn rate through out the day seems to be up 10% to 20% right now on average. I hope this keeps up. Up to 235-285 cho on workout days (weekly kcal average is up 10-15% from what it was).

Also, Paul, when you first started slowly adding more cho and cals, did you notice you got DOMS/Sore alot easier? It's like everything I make any sort of exerted effort lifting makes me sore the past few days. I did 3 sets of squats, maybe 4-6 reps. Normally, 99.9% of the time I would not get DOMS... today oh FU(&!

Paul do you ever get impatient when cutting/bulking? And how do you deal? Probably the biggest mindf*ck for me. I'm fairly patient, but after a month or two I'm like lets gooooooooo! With only a 200+ calorie surplus I think I'd get real impatient.

both. Mainly acting but I would love to do some modeling as well. Recently graduated film school so I havnt done much yet, just a few vids here and there over the last few years. The goal is to be the next action star lol. Most actors actually stay in SHT shape until they get the roles so I figure the more I can do to set myself apart from the get go the better. Like Gerard Buttler.... Was around him quite a bit a few months ago for his movie hes shooting now, Playing the Field, and lol yaaaa he doesnt even remotely maintain a decent physique. So 6-8%, hold, get sht rollin is the plan lol.

And yeah, having a killer physique opens doors in the film industry for sure. Brad Pitt is a great actor, but like many, his physique helped launch his career (Thelma & Louise).

When cutting, I prefer the increases in mood I notice when I keep dietary fat high. My spike in calories had me go from 100g carbs/day to 240g/day - and to be honest I haven't felt a huge difference.

With that said, you're bulking, you enjoy carbs -> fats, and the epic amounts of carbs per day you eat make me tune in nightly. :)

Solid! More cals is like a snowball effect. Better gym performance, more NEAT, more cals burned therefore gotta up them even more, and so on!

Hmm, I never really paid attention. DOMS is a rather false way to tell if you're recovered or had a "good workout". Some days I have it and some days I don't. I always tend to get it in my chest and glute/ham tie-in area.

Nah never get impatient with cutting. When I dieted I took my time, I had a good chunk of time for my show so I went slow, but I did get a bit impatient in between my two shows however. With bulking, lately I have been getting impatient, so I upped my food for teh luls.

Yeah, that's what I'm shooting for. I'm not ripped enough for fitness. And definitely trying for commercials. More money and carries over better for acting (looks better on thee resume).

Not very far. Got about a year and half to go (studying at a University. Production-wise kind of sucks.) Almost went to Full Sail for it, but didn't know if that's what I truly wanted to do and didn't want to drop that much cash.

He's gotta do what he feels comfortable with.

Best examples I can think of are Martin's clients (from Leangains). None of his clients are huge, but they seem to all be happier with themselves mentally and physically. Which is important.

He has some skinny kids as clients that you might put on the edge of skinny fat, but from their results on his page they seem to be very happy and feel better about themselves overall even though they are skinny as a rail. Hopefully now though they are working on bulking up a little.

I am almost exactly the size of Jordan from that link. As lean? I have no clue. I don't even know my bf, I just go by comfort level and mirror. My profile pic is from 2 days ago. And I would rather be skinny, lean, and athletic and physically and mentally feel good about myself.

I'm bulking, slowly ramping up my kcals like Paul suggested now. This is my first stable controlled week and it feels good man! No beach whale feeling, no boobies shaking in the car feeling, no ring around my ankle from socks. I'm skinny as a freakin rail, but I'm hoping that changes over the next 6-12 months. I Just gotta stick with my plan, ask questions when needed and not make any hap hazard quick decisions to get me off track. Oh, and not be anal or ocd about this ****. it's all in good fun, and challenge.

I did the modeling thing and quit after 3-6 months and them telling me I needed to get leaner using careful words. That's what got me in to this mess and feeling like ****. Luckily I found Paul's thread.

no as long as you're doing it slowly and retaining most of your LBM it wont be a big deal.

Since then I've gained roughly 10 lbs with trace fat gains (that includes beginning supplementing with creatine though). Point is, you can start bulking whenever YOU feel ready. My personal choice was not to continue cutting because with my current LBM shredded would just look silly. If done properly it's not like you have to go out and buy a new wardrobe. This morning I tipped the scales at just under 194 and I'm still rocking a 32" waist (and I have a genetic fat-ass) so don't worry about starting a bulk at a non-ideal bf%.

Thanks for the advice Julia, I don't take advice lightly when it comes from members I really admire and respect.

It's a two sided coin. I've never bulked before, so all my LBM is pretty much the hidden mass I had hidden away when I was 285lbs+. Sadly, over the course of losing all my weight, I've lost a lot of that LBM.

When I bulk, I plan on hitting around 200lbs for my first attempt (I suspect it will be super easy since I gain weight fairly easily). So I figure the leaner I get pre-bulk the less I'll have to trim off once the bulk is complete.

Ideally, I only want to have to cut 10 pounds maximum by the end. Hoping to land myself at a very lean 190lbs or so.*

* very lean as in low teens (sub 12% preferably) -- bulk planned on being super slow and as lean as being natty will allow me. 2-3 pounds/month.

Thanks for the advice Julia, I don't take advice lightly when it comes from members I really admire and respect.

It's a two sided coin. I've never bulked before, so all my LBM is pretty much the hidden mass I had hidden away when I was 285lbs+. Sadly, over the course of losing all my weight, I've lost a lot of that LBM.

When I bulk, I plan on hitting around 200lbs for my first attempt (I suspect it will be super easy since I gain weight fairly easily). So I figure the leaner I get pre-bulk the less I'll have to trim off once the bulk is complete.

Ideally, I only want to have to cut 10 pounds maximum by the end. Hoping to land myself at a very lean 190lbs or so.*

I dont suggest bulking to a certain weight. Or atleast keep ur options open.

I set a quest to hit 200lbs and I did it! but of course when I got there it was time for me to start preping for a bb contest..... 40lbs later im sure I lost a good amount of LBM.

My plan is to clean bulk.... stay on the leaner side (not over 12%) or do periodic cuts or set cals at maint for a week etc.

But to each his own :)

I agree with TheNaturalOak here.
I personally don't set any goals in numbers - whether I am cutting or bulking, that's why Alan's concept of target bodyweight is a little unclear to me.
When I started this cut, I had no clue where I was going to end up in terms of bodyweight. I go by the mirror usually, I do use the scale but with the water fluctuations that I am having it's so much mindfuk that I prefer mirror and tape measurements.

Strawberry, I kinda indulged myself today to be honest, didn't track anything, but I am back on the diet tomorrow, I consider my cut finished and done. so freaking tired of this sh...t.
I have no clue how competitors do it, mad props to them, I'll probably never get into contest conditioning.

Thankfully I havnt had to get very low this round yet but ya I got pretty bad on the last one. and who knows, maybe a little break is all u need and if u decide to actually do one in the future it could be much easier the next time :). I was so sick of dieting for my show but then once I allowed that one day binge post show. I was 110% ready the following monday. Its so strange, its easier to stick to the diet now after allowing myself go crazy. Tbh I enjoy my diet, and well of course low energy and cardio sucks but I want that damn conditioning!

And your also shredded, like jak said, you got contest lean on a "trial." Thats impressive!!

Once ur hormones get back to normal and u the stress leaves, I bet you'll be more than ready mentally/physically to compete next year.

Ah I never viewed that before, but now I will agree that a slight caloric surplus would be a good idea. HOWEVER, if your weight loss is currently linear with no stalls, then carry on for another 3-4 weeks, from there on bulk.

Best examples I can think of are Martin's clients (from Leangains). None of his clients are huge, but they seem to all be happier with themselves mentally and physically. Which is important.

He has some skinny kids as clients that you might put on the edge of skinny fat, but from their results on his page they seem to be very happy and feel better about themselves overall even though they are skinny as a rail. Hopefully now though they are working on bulking up a little.

I am almost exactly the size of Jordan from that link. As lean? I have no clue. I don't even know my bf, I just go by comfort level and mirror. My profile pic is from 2 days ago. And I would rather be skinny, lean, and athletic and physically and mentally feel good about myself.

I'm bulking, slowly ramping up my kcals like Paul suggested now. This is my first stable controlled week and it feels good man! No beach whale feeling, no boobies shaking in the car feeling, no ring around my ankle from socks. I'm skinny as a freakin rail, but I'm hoping that changes over the next 6-12 months. I Just gotta stick with my plan, ask questions when needed and not make any hap hazard quick decisions to get me off track. I've been lean gaining for the past 3.5 months. When I started I was approx. 183-184 @ 16% bf. Since then I've gained roughly 10 lbs with trace fat gains (that includes beginning supplementing with creatine though). Point is, you can start bulking whenever YOU feel ready. My personal choice was not to continue cutting because with my current LBM shredded would just look silly. If done properly it's not like you have to go out and buy a new wardrobe. This morning I tipped the scales at just under 194 and I'm still rocking a 32" waist (and I have a genetic fat-ass) so don't worry about starting a bulk at a non-ideal bf%.

Why are you correlating creatine use to fat gains? They have nothing to do with each other bro. And agreed on the fat:muscle gain ratio. The fat gain sure as hell outweighs any trace amounts of fat if bulked slowly and carefully.

You also gotta consider if you gain FFM at a faster rate than FM, your BF% actually drops due to the ratio.

Yeah I just have a rough weight that I want to hit, but everything else is by feel, scale and mirror... and half of it is also not giving a fukc and wanting MOAR FOOD. I just set ballpark numbers. 180lbs short term, 190lbs long term

For bulking setting numbers ain't bad, but for cutting it is a terrible idea IMO due to a lot of people not being realistic in telling themselves how my fat they're carrying and how long it will truly take. If they do set a goal, they go into retarded caloric deficits and lose LBM.

You misunderstood slightly, what I meant to say was that a portion of the 10 lbs I've gained can be attributed additional glycogen uptake due to creatine, the implication being that I would probably have gained less in the 3.5 month timeframe had I not initiated creatine supplementation.

Brainfog was really bad for me. Plus I was in low digit %'s during the winter, so it was extremely tough haha

When it got mentally tough for my I literally forced myself out of the house to just go for a walk and get my mind off everything and set priorities and think about my goals hard. It kinda worked since when I got mentally tired, I would get ravenous as hell at those points, and staying in the house didn't help.

Welp, there you guys have it. Tired as hell, sorry if I missed anything :( I was out all day yesterday and had to take in 4.5k. Apex website was down last night and I wasn't able to get an accurate reading and I am about to upload the data right now. Ahh I see. Well glycogen still counts as FFM, just that it isn't pure contractile tissue, so it is a positive gain that should be accounted for :)

I honestly believe so. It may just be the genetic structure of my abs though that make it deceiving for me.

Totally agree with what Alan said, many females over-diet and come on stage stringy and flat, and at times actually making them appear at a higher BF% then they truly are due to not filling out.

And yeah, CHO is fun! I'm curious as to what Allgen has to say in terms of macros, for the most part he will say "it doesn't matter, just get calls in from either fat or carbs" But I remember him saying he was up at like 800-900g a day at one point, and he uses PB2 so I think I know the answer ;)

I picked up the Ice Cream Sandwich Pop Tart's. Not bad, I think I still would say Brown Sugar and Cinnamon are the best. I use half a box + protein shake + pint of milk for post workout anabolism now (not all the time of course). Feels good man.

I think the low fat ones taste like tar. I don't know why would want them. Nasty stuff.

Why do you suppose it's so much harder staying at, say, 5 % than 8? Your metabolism shouldn't be that much slower. I'm not arguing that it isn't, just wondering why. Is it the hormones telling you to eat, eat, eat? :)

Well, I'm guessing getting there is much harder than actually maintaining it.

To get there you have to be eating a deficit. Which sucks balls and is always difficult, mentally and physically. It's just much easier I have noticed to keep a deficit when you have more excess to get rid of.

When already lean eating a deficit seems to me to be much more difficult.

Maintaining it I have no clue, but I'm only guessing. Martin from Leangains claims to maintain a 5.5% rather easily: http://www.leangains.com/p/my-transformation.html

At one point, I was a a bit leaner than I am now. It kind of went away as soon as I went ape **** on the ice cream when I learned about the whole macros thing and reading Paul's log, and your posts. Yeah, no self control here :) If I'm having something like that, I'm having the whole damn thing, I don't have the self control you and Paul have. Well, I could, but I choose not too. I just learned to fit it in once in a while and feel good about it now. No more OCD or being anal about this ****.

Sorry to hear that it didn't work out. That is why set-point is a critical role in maintaining a physique and sustaining it for stuff like a photoshoot/modelling season. A ton of people in the modelling industry really have no clue (like most BB'ers actually) as to what they're doing with terrible dieting and training. Hell man watch Super Slim Me on youtube, those females are PHUCKED.

I am jelly too. I wonder if the BB bases resting cal burn on the info you put in, or throw all the sensors. A buddy of mine is like 150lbs, about 135-140lbs LBM yet burns 1.8 at rest, wtf lol

I'm assuming Martin has a very low set-point, lucky fukcer. However I don't see a reason to maintain, unless you mean bulk while keeping BF levels pretty low.

As for self control, just picture the final product and the positives that will be produced. Risk:benefit ratio is a good example.

Well, two years later I didn't get accepted into the business school, but its actually a good thing because during the process I learned that I really do love film production and acting and thats what I want to do.

Np brah, I think at times we can be our own worst critic. I know all my friends are like "fuarkk bro you're jacked as ****" or stuff along the lines of that and I usually just laugh and think of somebody I seen on here or another site and I just say "nah not even close." I'm assuming Martin has a very low set-point, lucky fukcer. However I don't see a reason to maintain, unless you mean bulk while keeping BF levels pretty low.

As for self control, just picture the final product and the positives that will be produced. Risk:benefit ratio is a good example.

Hey Paul I have a question for you in regards to how you train. How is your over all recovery when hitting your Saturday workout and then getting back in the gym Monday hitting upper?

Or is Saturday used as a condition day for weak area's to target a bit more?

No issues with recovery from Saturday to Monday. I may be SLIGHTLY sore but that isn't really related to recovery, and it doesn't drop performance personally.

Saturday isn't really a "conditioning" day, it's mainly a higher repetition/hypertrophy day. My split is essentially PHAT with WSB ME days and incorporating some DE/RE into the 3 hyp. days. I find the PHAT to be too heavy in volume.

Well I don't really see this as being counter productive with your arm workout however it may be if you have too much volume in your chest workout. What other workouts are you training for chest that day, and what is the set/rep range and are you hitting complete failure?

Oh, no, it's not that I'm self conscious about my looks, I'm more or less at peace with my body.
It's just the fact that once you get something on the internet, it's impossible to get it out again. And half naked pics of myself posing in underpants with my face visible is definitely something I don't want to float around, especially when I'll start applying for jobs sooner rather than later.

And cropping my pretty face out of the pictures is not an option. I'm too handsome to be hidden! :p

Lol! This is the exact reason I dont use facebook or let my friends take pictures of me. Must fly under the radar as much as possible these days.
