Your picture of the tri tip roast from Trader Joe's inspired me to make one for dinner the other night. It was very good.

I've got a question about your food log. How are you able to post the actual log? I've almost got enough posts to be able to post links and I'd like to be able to include the log from my Bodymedia.

I am not sure what kind of computer you are using but on Windows it is just a matter of using the "snipping tool."

Go to the "start" icon on the bottom left. If it isnt already listed there you can find it under programs. Once you hit it the screen will grey and you can chose a full screen nip, window, or rectangle (I use rectangle.) Note you have to be on th screen you want to snip before you pull up the tool. Use the pointer to square off the area you want to snip then save it. Once it is saved, you can use tinypic.com to upload it and then use the img code for message boards and copy/paste that code into your log.

You can also use photobucket.com to upload the pics/images as well.

I am not sure if you have to have a certain number of posts to post pics.... for links, yes, but you might be able to do pics!

If you have a mac, someone else will have to help you.... I will get JohnPognolo to explain it.

May 13

Trying to think back....... I dont think I did much this day..... I know did didnt do any weights and probably just did stuff around the house. Cant really recall! After looing at the bodybugg, it looks like I was a lazy bum.

Oh well. I do have some food pics, food log, and Bodybugg!

Food pics:
Pig in a blanket (sorta.) I also tried some of these rice cakes that were quite nice!! Also had some of the almonds we bought, this time I had the Blazing Buffalo Wing. Wasnt bad! Will def have again.

Went shopping as well and picked these up at Target!!
Tastes a lot like a Thin Mint GS cookie! Nice little bites of mint cream here and there as well.

This one was good!! I love the strawberry/raspberry sort of flavors and this one was a total hit!
http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h424/spicyprice/Foood%20pics/foodandflex009.jpg

This one might be my favorite... appropriately salty and the almonds are nice and crunchy. This one is WORLDS better than the Lindt Sea Salt.

Weekend Update:

I really didnt do a while ton. It was coldish and drizzling outside so I didnt go riding on my bike (I know, Im a wuss about riding in the cold.)

The Casino Night was a lot of fun. The BF is a big fan of anything that one can bet on and I think we may have wasted all of our blackjack luck at a fundraiser using fake $$. Seriously, won the first 12 hands and then once he broke his winning streak, he would only lose a hand here and there. Turned $200 into $2500 in about 1 hour. CRAP.... that luck will never happen again! I know I went well over my calories for this night due to the fact that i had 5 glasses of wine (WHAT) instead of the 2 I had planned. The food was just finger food. I had a piece of lamb kabob, ahi poke, and another tuna bite fort of thing. A couple mini chocolate cupcakes and then the wine. I had a small bit of a couple other things but I figured if it didnt taste really good I wasnt going to waste the cals on it.

The next night we went to dinner at a great local place and then headed to Zac Brown Band concert. The opener was so horrible I think it left a bad taste in our mouth and a bit of a headache. Blackberry Smoke: horrible. Actually, horrible isnt even a strong enough word. We left the concert itself long before it was over just because they had played most of the songs we wanted to hear and we just werent feeling it. Oh well.

Good food over the weekend and a lot of fun. I ate pretty low cal on both days at home so I think i didnt do too horrible.

I did work out on Sunday and had a GREAT session (fueled by a couple peices of chocolate and the previous nights cupcakes, no doubt!!)

Food Log:
Didnt eat until after my long gym session so all of my calories were consumed in about 2 hours..... didnt bother me a bit, which is SCARRRRY!! also, we are trying to use up a lot of our groceries that we seem to have stock piled so meals are getting less and less interesting.

wasnt happy with my form on my last rep of every single set, so I will keep it here for next week. My abs are pretty sore today, although not sure if it was this or the OH Press from Sun. On a side note, I got a huge compliment on my form. A guy walked up to me (after WU sets) and said that my form was mechanically some of the best he has seen. tat my depth and my back... and something about a q angle, which I know nothing about. Feltgood!!! One thing I still need to correct: Im stopping at the bottom still... FUUUU. Hard habit to break!

Yes. Marinate with the following secret sauce:
-ketchup
-teriyaki sauce
-strawberry jam

Put salmon on grill and re-apply special sauce while grilling. Serve and grub.

(Don't let the special sauce reach the masses... keep it on the DL :D )

Weekend Update!

Why does that saying feel like SNL?

Friday

Friday I worked all day so my cal burn was ALL NEAT. Wasnt an overly busy day, but i was definitely moving a lot! I wasnt really sure I was working, couldnt sleep (BF was out of town) and didnt make my lunch ahead of time nor did I plan, so I sort of had to throw something together and cross my fingers. I did jot down weights of food, but didnt have time to put it all in online (was pushing the clock as it was.) Cals were a little higher than planned and then my usual GY bowl put me over my planned cals. Not terrible considering my burn, but still.

BodyBugg:
http://i53.tinypic.com/2uxwscw.png

Food Log:
http://i51.tinypic.com/2mg817a.png

Looking at Mon-Fri I was at a deficit of about 4500cals. I weighed myself on Sat morning but it was a bad female day to weigh ones self so I was actually up by 2 lbs from the day before.... go figure. This was my first week of the increased cals and it didnt tell me anything due to water weight. Great.

Saturday

This day was a bit of a lazy day. I slept late and then got out the tools and hung some pics and got all handy-dandy and actually fixed a creaky piece of furniture, painted a some trim that I had filled the day before, did some house cleaning. We had our date night planned for that night so I ate sorta light during the day (900 cals) and then did dinner followed up by a trip for some fro-yo at y favorite place.

I had the bodybugg off a few times Saturday, including while we were out at dinner.. Interestingly, for the time I had it off I said I was not active yet it says I only burned 1cal/min, which is less than what I burn when I sleep.... so do not comprehend.

BodyBugg

Dinner!!

So went to a great place called whisk&ladle.

Chorizo Date Fritters with Moraccan Tomato Sauce (not my pic):

http://media2.px.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/4VXUFalPWgDMgQLT5WVuKQ/l

We also ordered a flatbread thing that was more like a pringle chip with a spicy marinata and ricotta. Was eh.

What was great about the place is they offered dinner entrees in small plates or regular. I got a small plate of Squid Ink Fettuccine with Prawns. was really good and was in a spicy EVOO sauce... I am guessing an infused/pressed olive oil.

I also included 2 glasses of wine and a strawberry julep. the mixed drink was good, but I had it between apps and dinner so I think it was unnecessary and messed a bit with my taste buds. was too sweet for when I had it :(.

Sunday

Today was also a bunch of nothoing but grocery shopping. We were going to go hiking but I slept really terrible and had an issue during the night that kept me awake and in pain and I woke up exhausted. Hung around the house then went grocery shopping and decided at the last minute to stop by a festival (thanks Synthetic) and walk around for a few minutes. It was really busy and there was TONS of good smelling food (was a Sicilian festival) and thankfully I was satisfied from breakfast so I passed.

Picked up a couple steaks for dinner. I havent had my good All Clad pots (or even any of my kitchen things) in over 2 years. I think now that I am getting closer to getting my stuff back I am getting irritable with cooking on crappy nonstick stuff. the steaks came out meh thanks to the pan and the rice I made I overcooked.... the only thing that came out half way decent were the brussel sprouts! Oh, and I would like to point out that nothing was done at the same time.

Anyway, also hit up the ice cream section... yeah...... Thank God the BF LOVES ice cream and will be downing most of it (I plan to try one of the double chocolate magnum and a bite of the PS chocolate, otherwise it is skinny cow for me when it fits.)

See http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpost.php?p=686299601&postcount=3 for ice cream madness!

I also picked up a new chocolate to try. I had one square and it is some GOOD stuff!

Well, yesterday i slept till 930ish AM, walked to the gym, did my upper split, walked a couple errands, walked home, made dinner, got ready for work and then worked till 730am this morning, so the BB # covered till MN. I am a nurse and last night I wasnt even all that busy, although I didnt let myself sit down much (actually at all, only on a couple breaks.)

Not overly sure of what to think of the BB#s. I am not at some extreme deficit and I am also not seeing any weight loss, so not sure what to think. Just not quite sure at all :/.

My BB#s (other than this past weekends) have kinda been pretty high. This is my highest so far with the exception of when I worked a night shift on the same day as a leg day and it ended up slightly over 3k.

Seriously, I just dont know what to think. If this is correct(ish) I had a deficit of 4500 last week for mon-fri, likely went over my maint on sat and then was right at maint on sun. So how is it that I am staying so steady on the scale?

cheddar cheese

ralphs / henrys has swiss-cheddar-mozz-jalepeno jack cheese that is fat free. But fat free cheeses dont melt well when you cook.

http://www.lifetimefatfree.com/

Personally I avoid hard cheese with fat, as its so high in sat fat that raises ldl levels, SO for a creamy dish, I would go with some warm cream cheese/cream post cooking (The more liquid the fat, the better it is for you)

Also, why dont your trim the fat off that steak? You can make it useful by trimming the fat, putting it on top of the steak while grilling so the good fats go into the meat, and throw out that hard left over

Dude those lifetimefatfree cheeses taste god awful!

I usually stick with the shredded FF cheddar from ralphs and I just found out albertsons on 15th has FF moz shredded. Seems like I use it for a protein source and use it in large amounts. BUT, one can not beat a good swiss cheese! It has its place...... and that is in my eggs!

Have you tried

Tuesday

Worked all night, got home at 8am, was WAAAY hungry, ate a bagel with PB and a glass of milk and passed out around 10am. Per my usual unable to sleep during the day issue, I was dozing until 1pm when my eyes popped open and then dozed on and off till 340pm when I finally got myself up and went to the gym. Am now back at work so no pics from food log or bodybugg (which I cant do till tomorrow AM anyuwa.)

BUT, I can update my workout log!!!!!

Lower
So today, despite being tired, I felt like I was lifting and hitting all that I planned on hitting, and even surprising myself with my grip! I wishj i had more time to play with an extra seet of higher weights on a few of my lifts but I was severely time limited and needed to get in and get out. I really felt like I had plenty left in me when I walked away and it was disappointing that the day I feel like this is a day I cant make use of it. Damn guys, feelsbadman.

Also of note, my knee has felt farked a bit since last leg day. I think it was from doing the glute bridges on the stability ball. Maybe a bad angle? Either way, it didnt hurt on the squat or anythingelse, so it makes me thin those movements are not what caused the issue.

Glute Bridge
3x10xBW
I really feel like useing no weight on this helped me on the squat. I felt like it helped to warm up and let me concentrate on glutes[/b]

Squat
2x8x45
5x5x125
[i]Heck YEAH!! All of these felt good on form and depth. I managed to not pause at the bottom either and felt like it was a smooth movement. I watched a TON of vids from the exercise subforum (without sound) last nigth at work and I think it helped me seeing it again.

RDL
2x8x45
3x3x115
2x6x95
Should ave upped my weight on the last 2 sets to 110...could have done the 95s for days. ugh, wasted time :/ BUT, grip was maintained throughout the ENTIRE 5 sets!!!!!

BSS
1x8xbw
5x5x45s
Grip was not an issue!!!! I did try to do a complete set of both right and left legs without putting the 45s down, but I quickly realized that I was getting ahead of myself, LOL. dropping a 45lb weight on my piggies would not do any good for gains.

At this point I was past my time and needed to get the hell outta dodge. Was hoping to get in sumo squats but no can do. Oh well. Tomorrow is a rest day and the Upper/Lower again Thurs/Fri.

Meals: Something I had tonight that I havent had in a while and need to start making again:
Spinach, canned tongol tuna, Ms. Dash Fiesta Lime, fat free cheddar. Topped it with a whole avocado and salsa and it was MONEY!!

Nothing else exciting going on, but will have time tomorrow to update BB and Food Log.

LATER!!

The as much as I love the majority of their products, the TJoes low fat/fat free cheeses are the worst Ive tried...like rubber! Stick with the Kraft.

HMMM, never even seen the popcorn seasoning or even thought about it or looked at it. Nacho sounds killer! So do you toss the cheese with the seasoning and then use it?

Agree with the TJ lite. I only tried their lite moz and wasnt impressed. The FF ricotta is terrible as well. I have some of the albertsons brand cheese right now and t seems pretty legit (and was on sale!)

I honestly prefer fats from butter, pb, and chocolate to cheese, although the baby swiss made me muy happy the other day.

Any grocery store should have it in the popcorn area. Walmart, Target, and all my local chains all carry that brand and sometimes a variation as well. I usually am using the cheese on eggs or in a sandwich, so Ill just sprinkle it on towards the end or right before melting on the sandwich. It brings a lot of the cheese flavor back to the cheese lol!

Thanks! Hate leaving something that is going so well, but work pays the bills to go to the gym, so it is what it is!

BTW, the steak is really awesome and the macros a really good. A lot of seasoned things are usually pretty carb heavy (would rather get my carbs from more filling sources) and calorie dense from fat, but this cut is quite lean and STILL tender. Hope you enjoy it!

It's super creamy & has TONS of flavor for a lite cheese (4g of fat per 1/4 cup)

I will definitely hafta try the popcorn seasoning. I LOVE white cheddar popcorn but can't bring myself to have 10g of fat in one serving, esp since I can't get enough PB :P I've found a great alternate though. Kinda weird & prob not for everyone, but Tostitos Salsa Con Queso is 40 cals per 2 TBSP, 2.5g of fat, 5g of carbs. I have it with a 100 cal pack of Orville Redenbacher popcorn...totally satisfies my cheesy snack cravings ;)

I have some kettle corn popcorn, but I never seem to fit it in.... I guess I love other stuff so much more that I dont make an effort to bother with it. BUT, I need to look at the macros on it because it might not be hard at all to work it in!

Well, i after not seing much change, getting the body bugg, and evaluating my last couple years of eating and working out, I realized I had made some serious errors and needed to start upping my cals and sit there for a while. There should be no reason that I was seeing no scale/mirror changes when eating that low cal and being that active. well, actually, there is a reason.... I was eating too little for too long considering my activity.

Right now I am sucking up the fats gains that are coming with it, may go for a couple weeks at 2400 then start cutting at 2k. I have an appointment with Leigh Peele (metabolic Repair expert) on Monday and will go over my plan with her and see if she thinks I should be good to go...

May want to consider if you are calculating your maintenance accurately?

spicyprice
06-30-2011, 12:37 AM
OK, So I finally need to do an update on this here log.

Looking at where I left off, I was at 1800 cals/day and still not making any scale/mirror changes. My weight was all over the place and nothing was happeing in the mirror. I also realized that for my size, I was eating a good bit less than people that I have >20lbs on.

Looking further back into my history and my habits, I have for a long time dieted on pretty low calories. About 3 years ago when I lost majority of the weight I had on me, i did it essentially by starvation. I was getting divorced and my appetite was non-existant. i was woring out everyday doing 5-6 day splits and lots of cardio, about an hour a day on top of lifting (HIIT and MISS.) After that, my appetite picked up and looking at what I know now about calories, I am estimating that I ate around 13-1400 cals/day and very low carb. I did that for a long time and maintained a weight of about 145 with not a ton of muscle. Started doing travel nursing and didnt work out as much, had a spotty diet, periods of binging and starving (would have been purging but no matter how long the toothbrush I couldnt elicit a gag reflex.)

So, then I got settled in my current location, had just gotten over a period of binging with no starving and started to count calories and see what i could do. back to the 5 day split and lots of cardio and eating about 1300-1400 cals. Went from 160 to about 150 quickly, then stalled. Went to a nutritonist for 3 months and she had me eating 1600 cals. I ramped up my activity and started cyclig a lot more because I was motivated. Well, all this did was make my deficit even bigger, which I know now was making matters worse. i got down to 140 after 5 months of this (10lbs in 5 months... is this real life?)

I was having major GI issues at this point and went to a gastroenterologist nd after some lab work found that my TSH was high. I also have the anti-thyroid antibody so per protocol I was started on synthroid. At this point I was feeling soo beaten by the whole thing that I let up a little on counting my calories and my weight quickly jumped back to 145-148ish. I had surgery (implants which adjusted my weight by 2.2lbs) and after the gym break from this I was at 155.....defeated and panicked.

So, i decided to try rapid Fat Loss by Lyle. i did 6 weeks of a cat 2, did it by the book. Scale def didnt change as much as I saw others make when I was logging on bodyrecomp. So, in the end i went from 155 to 147 wet to wet weight. Did a 2 week diet break where I slowly upped cals, made it to 2k cals for about 3 days (I thiought this was my maintenance because I didnt think I was that active....) and then started as a cat 1 for 12 days.

I almost followed this to the T... except I lowered the protein intake because I felt like my activity during those 2 weeks was going to be nil (I was confined to 12 hours a day/60hrs a week of sitting at a desk) so i ate 175g protein rather than the 230 that the calcultor told me to do....Im an idiot. weight got down to 144 and then I used a laxative (for anyone who has done this ou KNOW why I took this) and my lectrolytes went crazy and in 2 days I gained 4 lbs of water weight. That water weight never came off so I ended it t 146 dry weight.

Start NCSF challenge day after 2 day refeed. weight was 151 I believe. I slowly up my cals after refeed to 2k, kept them there for bout 2 days, figured I could cut my cals to 1600ish and then eat plenty of carbs instead of doign 2 week diet break.... stupid. Well, i considered high carb to be 150g. Yes, silly.

So, 4 weeks at 16-1700 cals and nothing.
started to think I should up my cals so 2 weeks at 1800.... no gain, no loss.
Ge a bodybugg, see average burn is about 2700...... still a doubter, but think I might need to look into this cause nothing is making sense anymore.

So, I read metabolic repair manual and although I dont fir into any of the stages, i sort of decided I need to strt upping cals and **** might just hit the fan but I think it is the right thing to do. I see she reccomends a gym break, which fit perfectly at this time because my left rear delt was super sore all of the time and I was getting patellar tendonitis in both knees. Felt like rubber bands pulled super tight every time I kneeled down :(

So, 2k cals and 2 week gym break and start upping CHO.......I know not the order Leigh calls for but as you can see I am a bit of an idiot. so, weight goes ASS crazy. up and down by 2-3 lbs overnight
I do a third week of 2k cals and head back to the gym feeling ready to go. i get a massage as suggested in book and I a reminded tht my shoulders are rotated and I should probably see a therapist because the musce is now shortened and doesnt budge. Argh. so, I am getting in to see a GP so i can get a referral. hump back--do not want.
So, i am nhow in week 2 of 22k cals.... CHO around 275ish for 3 days npw and my weight is up to 153.6 and is still boucning all over the place by over half a lb to 1 lb each morning. By bur has drpped a bit due to workig more night shifts and just being generally tired from that so currently my average is around 2500ish. I sat on my ass all day tus due to having the worst heartburn I have ever had (hurt to move...wtf?) and my burn was 2200ish. Shouldnt have too many days of that little activity, so i am thinking that by getting to 2400 I should be safe.

The plan..... I have an appointment with Leigh on Monday and will review what I think my next steps are and see what she thinkgs, as well as asking about combating this watee retention issues I am having.
Do one more week of 2200 at 275 CHO, then 2 weeks at 2400, 275 CHO. The one week of over feeding and then drop to 2k cals keeping CHO high.

Will post shortly on recent lifts. Progress has been made since last liftin entry :D At least there has been a positive that has come out of this!!!

Oh, you're like me! I dieted on low calories for years. Never exceeded 1600, and it was rare to hit that. My gowear fit and me did not get along :p I wasn't burning what I should have been, and was gaining on my "mainenance calories" of 2000 calories when I tried to bulk. I finally stopped ganing 8 pounds later :p But then when I dropped them to diet I started on 1700 and hardly lost a thing in months on those calories.

So I quit and started dieting on lower calories, and then started UD2 because you only eat ~1150 calories for the first 3.5 days and I figured I definitely lose on that! 3 weeks of UD2 later, and one week of dieting prior- same scale weight :p Though I appear smaller. But it's taking me much longer than it would take someone with a normal metabolism. And I gain quickly on calories that I shouldn't be gaining on.

I just wanted to relate :) Once I'm done losing I'm planning on eating 1800-2000 calories for the rest of my life until my metabolism screws off :p

Snipped

I know you don't know me at all - I am a mega lurker teehee but I really wanted to just post to let you know just how helpful I thought your update was!!!

Your update is really really interesting to read and covers a lot of familiar behaviors which considering your documented results is very enlightening I think its really really really easy to misjudge your metabolic burn based on perceived level of exercise it seems no-one gets it right lol.

I think that your update is immensely helpful though and should be read by all those who may be struggling might be they find themselves doing some of the stuff you mention above (I know I recognize a few myself!)

Hope you don't mind me butting in :)

Thanks for the reply!! I am pretty much in the exact boat that you mentioned. I myself got a body media fit about 3 weeks ago, and have also come to find out that I was also under eating. I had had blood work in December and again in April and nothing was found (as far as thyroid issues) so I am drastically hoping that the under eating was my problem. I have slowly upped my calories though since getting the body media fit, and have a very similar game plan to what you do!

Thank you! It was actually very helpful for me to put it down on paper and really think through all of my idiocy. I hope I have the outcome I am looking for so anyone who reads it and sees themselves doing a lot of the same things can be motivated to do the same.

VERY awesome!! Do you have a log? If not, would love to hear updates on how your plan is going!

Yosemite Trip!!

So, we went hiking in Yosemite this past weekend. We initially planned on doing about 10 miles each day and sort of play it by ear in regards to what trails we did and how crowded it was.

That was the PLAN leaving for the first hike. We never follow our plan, so I dont know why we bother making one. We really should bring enough food/water for an all day adventure and expect to get lost/make a wrong turn/get injured (all things which have happened on our little day hike adventures.)

So, what started out being a 6 mile hike for our start turned into 16-17 miles. We were about 1 mile from the end of the trail ad decided to turn around and take another route to the next hike we were going to do... so we could do both hikes PLUS a third! The BF looked at me and said, you realize that is 6 miles to Glacier Point and another 4.6 miles after that...... (I think he gave me a semi-bertstare.) Me: Of course!! we got this! The last 5 miles is downhill anyway so it doesnt really count (am I naive or what..this wasnt my first rodeo so Im not sure what I was thinking.) Either way, we had a great time up until the final 2 miles when we were pretty much dead and totally done with the whole thing.

Oh, and at about 3 miles left we ran into a bear strolling up the trail (the 5 miles downhill that was an elevation loss of 3200 ft) I swear on my life that I had to turn and run up that hill to save my ass, I think I would have just given up and died. JK..... or not.

So, we initially hiked up to the top of Nevada Falls that passes by Vernal falls. Along Vernal Falls there is a section of about 600 steps of rock that go right by the fall. It is like a torrential rainfall-see pics of soaked spicyprice. After crossing at the top of the falls we went down the John Miur Trail back towards the valley. Where it reconnected with the main trail we decided to head back up and get onto the Panorama trail and head over to Glacier Point and then down 4-mile trail back to the valley and then walk to our car.
So onto the pics of this awesomeness!

This

That night when I got out of the car my joints felt like they were going to fall apart with each step, but that was a result of accutane. Almost fell over a few times hobbling into our room. My actual muscles never bothered me, which I was REALLY surprised at. Usually my calves and lower back bother me the most from a lot of uphill hiking, but I think the RDL and squats have really made a difference.

The only complaint I have is that my knees are back to feeling like rubberbands below the patella so I think I aggravated the patellar tendonitis again with all of the climbing. My shoulders and neck are giving me a hard time today/this week as well, but I think it is all just the accutane starting to really get to my joints.

LOL, you and I should never go hiking together! I loved hiking in the dark with no moon and no flashlight along a rocky uphill path with a drop off on the outside of the path.... and no food......but the waterfall was totally worth it (cedar creek falls 2010)!

Skittles is a nice idea for portable food.... what do yoi take on longer hikes for sodium? All I can ever think of is jerky and in Yosemite I accidentally bought the trader joes brand which is low sodium (fingers were so swollen they blanched around he joint when I straitened them.)

Do you find that atm you are pissed at yourself and swear off this stupid thing called hiking but then when all is safe you just laugh about it and shake your head and rear up for the next hike you have planned?

I think the BF and I really know so little about wilderness safety, etc that we arent smart enough to realize the danger we put ourselves in sometimes. It was only after watching the movie where the dude cuts off his arm to save himself did we even decide we should prolly carry a first aid kit, multi-tool, and some fire starters. To think our plan was to do this hike the next day knowing nothing about altitude sickness or hiking at that elevation:
http://kevingong.com/Hiking/MountDana.html

Not deterred but now know what to expect out of the hike---- the pics at end of the link from top of the mountain are insane!

Oh, funny side note about the bear... we had no idea what to do if we encountered a bear... after Steve and I started to slowly back up we actually pulled out our guide book and looked it up, LOL. We decided we didnt like the book's suggestion and just prayed we wouldnt have to try and outrun a bear uphill!

Nothing more sophisticated than like a Gatorade, but the longer hikes historically were shorter hikes that went awry. ;) I hardly hike at all anymore but one of my exes and I used to hike quite a bit. Our definitions of "hike" were kinda different, though. To me, it's like "oh, let's find some pretty woods and take a nice long walk" and his was more "Let's find the highest point in the surrounding 5 counties and climb to the top of it!! Booyah!" Which led to the semi-prepared adventures. He always had Skittles though.

Another friend and I almost got lost in the Middlesex Fells a couple years ago. The Middlesex Fells is this big reservation outside Boston where at one point on one of the trails you actually leave the woods and walk on a main street for a few feet, lol, and can see people's backyards on the other side of the trail at another point, and can hear the cars on 93 even though you can't see them at a third point, which all is to say that getting lost in there after sunset and having to call for help would be the most humiliating thing ever, so I'm glad we made it out on our own in the nick of time. Heh.

When I read this part I for some reason yelled it in my head.... accurate?

I cant imagine taking the trash out at night and hearing someone yelling from the forest....poking my head out over the fence and yelling "just keep walking to your left, you're almost there!"

Skittles sound like a great idea... a nice change up from the mushy banana (ours was nearly liquid when we pulled it from the backpack) and dried fruit/nuts. I had some PB and bread, but we forgot a utensil and I refused to let steve use the new multi-tool seeing as we one day may need it for surgery out on the trail.

Fuuuuuu, forgot about those. The bf would not go for them.... i dont think. But the strawberry flavored ones are great and he may be up for these. The problem with the trail mix is too many nuts start to hurt my stomach for some reason. The fat is fine for energy, but its just too much of a good thing.

I never think of doing bars either for some reason. I know some of the Quaker brand ones on this side of the pond taste like candy bars!

The one thing that bothered me about the dried fruit, and I think the same would go for the figs and bars, is the chewiness. I know when we were hammering down the last of the jerky and mix i felt like chewing the stuff was actually taking effort.

I think though, the key for getting through it is a solid breakfast.... cheesy eggs, bagel, hashbrowns.... and LOTS of coffee!

Eh............ (sarcasm detector: uncertain.)

It is what it is and I am doing the best I can with it, LOL.

So, I am totally due for an update.

I had my phone consult with Leigh Peele and I swear it was the best $50 I have ever spent. Her rec was to do 2 weeks of eating at 2800 on workout days and 2400 on rest days. She made a bunch of other recs regarding electrolytes, said that she expected me to settle in around 155ish. I had a female time during these two weeks and ended up hitting 160 for a day which was GOD awful. I kept CHO very high (300+) and some days hit as high as 400. Crazy sh*t started happening..... I started to feel real hunger (something I hadnt felt in a long time), my hair is growing like a freaking weed (which is really hard on my wallet), my nails are no longer chipping, my GI track thinks Im the greatest and loves me....... I got fat but I feel "fixed." I am hoping to be able to get off of Synthroid over the next year and after talking it over with Leigh, she also felt like the subclinical hypo very likely was diet related (after looking at a full diet history and onset of symptoms, etc.) I will be seeing my endo in a few months and will bring it up to him and ask about lowering my dose and seeing what happens. So, I "overfed" for 2 weeks then had to take a week and a half off of almost everything to go to GA and work my arse off for a week selling all of my earthly belongings (except for my beloved allclad pots, good knife and neat little decor and serving dishes.) I wore my BB for those days and burned no less than 3400 each day. I know I didnt eat anywhere near that, was lucky to get 1500.... was so freaking hot/sweaty and running around from 8am-midnight or later everyday. Hunger was non-existant. This was not good for my repair, but I ate whatever I wanted for the three days after and the intense hunger returned. After all that work, I took several epsom salt baths and pretty much rested and enjoyed time with mi madre.

So, I am now back and ready to get my REAL cut on the road!

So, the new plan:

Following Leigh Peeles 6C calorie cycle program per her reccomendation. I will still do my upper/lower split and have decided to change up my weight scheme to vary a bit more in the weights I use.... start with a lighter weigh at the 8-12 re range and work down to a 5rep range with higher weights and then final set return to the 8-12 rep range... all sets to 1-2 reps before failure, which I feel like I am getting pretty good at determining.

So, last workout was an upper split an an alpha gym back in my hometown.... no frills here! Oh, and really weird bb weights (preloaded)

Thanks for stopping in! I have been MIA for a while, but have thoroughly enjoyed your blog, I LOVE your writing style!

To answer your question, it was a combo of the undereating and the low carb for an extended period of time (over a year.) I felt like it was weird that I was diagnosed with it since no one in my family has it and it tends to be familial. It was after a long stint of eating about 1400 cals/day and doing LOTS of cycling, lifting everyday, working 60 hours/week (as a nurse on my feet/very high NEAT.) My carbs were around 100g/day as well. No diet break of more than a single day slip up/binge. If I knew then what I know now.........

Can you explain what you mean by getting fat? Feeling fixed?
Macros over this time? Routine? Cardio?

Macros were as stated (2400/2800) I didnt do any cardio other than some walking around, stretching, etc.... I lifted in a hypertrophy rep range with the upper/lower split. I am up to 155lbs, was 149ish when I started.

Feeling fixed: I honestly just have a general "well" feeling tbh. I feel positive about this plan, I feel strong in the gym (will post todays lower split tomorrow, went better than expected) I feel hungry (didnt feel this for at least the last year,) which knowing it is a good sign makes me feel like I didnt just "get fat" for nothing. The things she said would happen happened (hair, nails, gi improvement, sweating like whore in church, sudden return of hunger despite eating at a small surplus), so I feel like I accomplished what I set out to accomplish. I have seen her mention in other forums the idea that in the process you have to be willing to gain a little to lose a lot.... I mean, I know 6lbs isnt a ton, and my use of the word "fat" is prolly a bit exaggerated. But knowing how hard it has been to lose 6 lbs over the last year or so makes the idea of gaining that much hard to wrao your head around. BUT, IO know this time I wont need to work so hard (psmf for 6 weeks and only lost 6 lbs, then 12 day cat 1 psmf and lost may be 3lbs....on top of all my other low calorie crap I described a while back)to lose it because I am starting off in a good place and I have a plan that L. Peele feels like works very well for "post-repair" folks.

Ah, sorry, only slept for 3 hours since yesterday afternoon.... brain does not function well at this point!

I just hit 0.8g/lb pro and .25g/lb fat and filled the rest with starchy cho. I know I didnt need the extra protein since I was in a surplus and I kept fat lower because I honestly dont know enough about eating in a surplus, although I remember that during cho refeeds on RFL it was important o keep fats low, so I viewed this similarly. I guess I believe that in a surplus fats more easily store as fat while cho being stored as fat is not so easy (albeit much more easily as the surplus increases.) this may be wrong, but it isnt something I have had time to do a lot of reading on. So rather than chance it, I kept it low, although I didnt ask Leigh about it specifically. She did say to get my cho over 300g.

Thanks for stopping in! I have been MIA for a while, but have thoroughly enjoyed your blog, I LOVE your writing style!

Aww, thanks!

It frankly amazes me that I myself haven't tanked my metabolism with some of the stuff I've done over the years. I'm glad to hear you're feeling great with the new plan!

Sarah, srsly i almost felt like I was talking to my "nutrition doctor." She was so full of info on what studies had shown in this situation, what she had seen in her clients, etc.... I really felt like I learned so much.

I'm always saying to my boss, "How can anyone ever possibly be bored now that there's youtube?"

Um, I have a better work ethic than that sentence makes it sound.

Walked a little over 2 miles to and from the gym. Otherwise didnt do much other than working tonight.

I guess I should mention, I am not wearing my BB each day. I keep forgetting to put it on, but am using an average of 2400 since I am working a lot of nights lately (much more tired, lower NEAT) Will prolly wear it here and there to make sure I am not going too low on my average estimate.

Todays cal goal was 1680 and I came up 100 short due to running late for work... shoulda grabbed the bag of 100cal popcorn but I forgot. ATM I could eat one of my little patients, so regretting this error immensely.

Tues: 1560 and will do lower split.

Wed: 1320 cals and some cardio and stretching... and maybe some abs

Thurs: 1080 with total rest. (IF ftw)

Fri: 2400 (maint) and upper split.

Sat: 2040 and lower

Sun: 1680 and upper

Got this in the bag!

Awesome! Maybe when I have some extra cash flow, I will gift myself a consult:) And thanks! I've been working hard:D

Btw, regarding your last post, can I ask why your cals fluctuate day to day? Is this something Leigh recommended? If so, what is the reason for it? If you don't mind me asking.

very very obvious, your hard work is paying off!! I read what you said about your cuz and plan on chiming in!

The calorie cycling is part of her 6C program. I believe it is less likely to cause metabolic slowdown, but that may just be my assumption (albeit a reasonable assumption since she recs it for those who have done met repair manual.) I need to delve further into her site to find out why, but I saw a post on her forum/somewhere on her website that said that from now on she will only recommend cycling cals because she feels like the research fully supports it. This plan is really only about 2 hard days but the others are totally doable. I do wish her website was easier to find info on, but I guess just like with bodyrecomposiiton.com, there is so much info it is hard to organize.

Hi! Totally interested in your plan with Leigh. Does she recommend doing cardio along with the upper/lower split?

The cardio days are the only days that I am doing formal cardio, although I walk to the gym, which is a little over a mile each way. I am also starting back cycling on the weekends, but that is hobby and not for any particular reason.

I am also not really following her workout routine, so what I am doing in that respect is not anything that she particularly recs.

That's wonderful that you've been able to get some answers and are fixing your metabolism. I've often wondered what kind of effect some of these extreme forms of dieting have on the body. I could not do a low carb diet as I enjoy them very much. I can't wait to start eating at maintenance for awhile. I'm also jealous that you were able to speak with Leigh Peele--sounds like it was money well spent.

Hey Sara! I hope ur weekend is going well! Regarding calorie cycling, do you know how Leigh came up with your numbers? And how is it translating into your macro breakdown? Are you just subtracting carbs? This sounds very interesting. I've always thought about doing a rendition of cal cycling but more so for the purposes of being able to consume more calories on certain days. I'll prob look up some of the cal cycling studies to see what it's all about & how it affects your metabolism.

And I totally agree with you regarding Leigh's website. There's a crap ton of info there. I don't think it's organized in the best way. I do, however, appreciate her writing style..esp in her 'sizeism' post? ;P

The numbers all came from her C6 program that is on her website. *Not sure why she calls for the numbers she does, but I am following the diet portion to the T. *The protein and fats are set for each day and its the CHO that changes. *I have completed a week and honestly it wasnt too bad at all. the very low day was pretty tolerable, but likely because I was working nights and was able to eat at MN. *And I was so freaking hungry I ate all the food I brought with me for the night, lol. *GY/berries/cheerios and cherry poptarts....and was still kinda hungry!
