Log for NFSC!

Well after taking pictures I realized my BF is still not where I want it to be despite the 30lbs lost. Id say a good 15 more to go would be at a decent place to restart this whole process but I'll see how things go over the next couple weeks. If I start bulking sooner than later, it is definitely going to be very slow and controlled because this excessive fat gain was one of the dumbest things I've done in a long time, but on that note, it is good to learn and correct your mistakes early on. I have a much better understanding of what I need to do now as opposed to just pigging out and hoping the scale went up as fast as possible.

Little background. I was about 165lbs this time last year, and a strong breeze would have lifted me off the ground. I realized I needed a change and came here to try and learn and to change my body. I took a lot of early advice that I soon found out wasn't for me. I was bulking on anywhere from 4k-6k calories a day just making sure to get lots of protein and carbs. By December I was 227 and didn't look any better, but was certainly bigger and stronger. I decided to learn about how to eat to gain good weight, and how to lose unwanted fat. I spent months reading and got a pretty good grasp on things. Since January I've been dieting and and I've lost ~30lbs and maintained most strength. As mentioned above though, I'm still not happy with my appearance and I'm torn between cutting another 15lbs and starting a slow bulk now. I don't know if filling out more will improve my appearance or if excess fat will still be too prominent. We will see.

Training: I keep it pretty simple but I do like to change it up every so often for no reason other than to experiment and see how I respond. I may do Mon/Wed/Fri full body, or do something like I'm doing now. Currently I do lower rep compounds on Mon/Tues, and more higher rep and assistance stuff Thurs/Fri. Often I do lower rep stuff all week.

Mon: Upper
Tues: Lower
Wed: Off
Thurs: Upper
Fri: Lower
Sat: Off
Sun: Off

Diet: Starting around 2400, down to about 2100 but slowing down so I may decrease a few more the next week or two. Typical day would be about
70F/140C/250P. This fluctuates from time to time but I try to aim for something similar. One day fat might be 80, and protein/carbs a bit lower, but total cal goal is always met. All depends on how my day goes. I'm gone typically 8-8 every day so if I forget lunch or I run out of pre-made food, I gotta make due with whatever I can get at the grocery store or a restaurant.

Bulking I will keep fat around 80-90, protein around 200, and start around 3000 cals and adjust carbs as progress slows.

NOW TIME FOR TEH NUDEZ
Feel free to comment if you have an opinion of which direction I should make the scale go at this point.

I feel the same way you do about it. Would like to cut just a bit futher but in my case I stalled out in the gym and just got too eager to bulk.

I say BULK. Lets see if we can do this with minimal fat gains :)

Either way, will be watching. Curious what you decide.

Day 1 of the undecided log. Leg day.

Leg Press: No idea what the hell the sled weighs, I just count the weights.
270x5
360x5
450x5
450x5
495x5
540x5

Lying Hamstring Curls:
65x8
110x5
125x5
140x5
140x5

Standing Calf Raises
120x12
180x12
180x12
180x12

Leg day doesn't change much. I can't squat or deadlift because my back is screwed up and the physical therapist said to stay clear of those for a while. Get to go do physical therapy every Wed and Fri. That's my core workout! :D Spend an hour each morning doing stretches and core strengthening exercises.

Diet: Had to go to California Pizza Kitchen for lunch. Co-worker's Bday and we always go to restaurant of their choosing. Basically just guessing on macros there as we all shared a bunch of different pizzas. Still deciding on dinner. Probably finish the day around 60F/150C/215P. On that note.

What did you do to your back?

Was doing some partial deadlifts one day, did just fine. Took most of the weight off then went to put 135 back on the ground and I felt like it just gave out. Was in a good bit of pain that night and for about 3 more weeks there was some moderate aching and pain, then one day it just got terrible. Could barely walk and had to leave work. Doctor didn't know what was going on so he sent me to see a physical therapist and I've been going there about 4-5 weeks. Don't know how much it is helping. Sitting in a chair for more than 15 mins it starts hurting. Exercise and moving around is when it starts to feel ok again. It's not as bad as when I started, but I'm definitely in pain still.

Muscle or spine? Sounds like it could have been a slipped disc or a tight erector that decided to go when you bent all the way down.

PT seems to think it is disc related but no one has told me anything definitive. I have to do all sorts of arching exercises all day long to try and relieve pressure from a disc supposedly pressing on nerves or something along those lines. They seem to help temporarily.

Dooo it. Wish I could do some better ones but there's only so many shots you can get from putting a camera on a floor lol. It's kinda good to be able to watch your form on video, even though this isn't much of a "form" exercise. Would be great for squats though.

Oh god...here goes...going to post some before and afters. Talk about embarrassing...

This was Halloween 2009. I lost a few more lbs between then and when I picked up the weights in the spring. Somewhere around 170 here, probably between 165-170 when I started. I didn't get on a scale until a few weeks after I started and I was exactly 170.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/ko300zx/DadsCamera063.jpg

and before anyone asks....this is who I was.

http://27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_krmr4ecTkj1qa8pe0o1_500.jpg

And then the failure of fulking...January 2011. Around 218 here. Was up to 227 in December before I cut calories after a big WTF am I doing moment. From skin and bones, to fat and...more fat. NEVER want to be like this again, which is why I'm hesitant to start bulking again.

Thanks! It seemed to come off relatively quick although I'm still kicking myself in the ass for getting that bad in the first place. Wish I would have come to this section prior to the fulkathon. Better late than never though.

I will say the one and only advantage of doing it that way was there is absolutely no possible way I shortchanged myself on any noob gains by under-eating, that's for sure.

I couldn't make it more than a half squat with the bar my first day squatting, my hips and hamstrings were too tight to allow any depth without my lower back bending big time. I was 23 or 24 years old at the time. I should find a pic from then, would provide some lulz.

Yeah, I used to hate legs the first few weeks because of the DOMs and having to walk around work. That, and the fact that for a while I couldn't lift much but after a couple of months, they skyrocketed and leg day became just as enjoyable as any other.

Yeah. That was my first car. 1990 TT. It was nice while it lasted but it probably wasn't the smartest purchase I ever made. I was big into cars when I was around 18. My friends and I all had pretty fast cars and we used to just spend our free time messing around with them. I used this name for car forums, instant messenger when it was popular, so I just stuck with the same thing for pretty much any forum I've registered for since then to keep it simple. Should probably come up with something new lol.

Just a few pics I saved...few of my friends and mine.

Since this is a log I think...

Today was another Leg day. Had to alter my schedule this week and push everything back 1 day. Won't repost the lifts, basically the same as the last time I posted a leg day, although I did seated and standing calf raises today, and cut out 1 set from each of the other exercises.

As mentioned above somewhere, been eating at 2800 cals (maintenance) for the week. Still don't know what the **** I want to do, cut more or start bulking. Depending on what mirror I'm in front of, my opinion changes...fuuuu

Today: 2802: 97F/265C/218P
Went a little higher on Fat and Protein today.

Yesterday, which will be similar to a typical bulk day (just more carbs) when I start,
2799: 85F/326.5C/189.1P

Week at maintenance + Easter weekend binge was awesome. Didn't pack on any extra lbs, but Monday's workout was awesome. I was able to go back up a few lbs on some lifts that were dying off the past couple months. Wish I had done a full week like that back in February or so. Fuuuuuu, can't wait to start bulking again. Kicking myself for all the progress I'm missing out on.

I was able to go back up a few lbs on some lifts that were dying off the past couple months. Wish I had done a full week like that back in February or so. Fuuuuuu, can't wait to start bulking again. Kicking myself for all the progress I'm missing out on.

Oh well, LIVE AND LEARN. That's what this is all about.

Yea there's always something that can get in the way. I finally did my first back-to-back squat days on smolov. I was feeling pretty hardcore until I strained my hip jumping off a curb on the walk home...

I have to quit my job just to KEEP UP with all the logs. I like yours 'cause I actually can keep up :p

Glad you had a nice Easter weekend & are taking advantage of the extra energy with your lifts :)

Thanks, hopefully you enjoyed yours as well. :)

Is it bad or can you still continue to squat like a mad man?

Well here I am, 3 weeks later, still fighting with myself over whether or not to continue cutting or to start bulking. I've got some stubborn boob fat and some stubborn stomach (mainly lower ab) and I want to get rid of it, but I just don't know how much longer I would have to ride out this cut before it goes away.

I don't want to have to lose 20 more lbs before it goes away. I don't need a 6 pack yet, and I don't need to be 8%. If I was, I'd be too damn light and thin. I just want these 2 areas cleaned up for the time being. Now, there's always the possibility that adding LBM could help reduce the appearance of fat in these 2 areas, or it could make it worse and I'll force myself to diet again.

I'm having a friggan OCD attack here. Soon it will be December and I'll have been eating at maintenance the entire time trying to decide wtf I need to do.

Anyone have any personal experience with either path while being in this position?

I would add ~100-200cals over maintanence and up the training intensity. See if your theory of adding LBW works. It sounds good to me.

Thanks for your thoughts. I've been leaning this way just because of the added benefit of the extra energy and getting stronger. The idea of being leaner over the summer is also appealing, but at the same time, being a stick figure is not.

I think this will also be a good personal IF experience. I eat ~2pm-9pm, today 3pm-9pm, fasting the rest of the day. This will be a typical pattern. We'll see if I can replicate any of the potential IF benefits in terms of keeping BF down while increasing LBM.

Totally! I also do IF (I eat 12pm-8pm and train fasted at 6am) and was doing a bulk with ~800-1000cals over estimated maintenance since the beginning of March. I put on a good amount of LBW and some fat.

Since the NFSC started I dropped down to 200-400cals over maintenance and for the past three weeks my lifts are going up, my strength is increasing and the scale weight has NOT MOVED AN OUNCE, lol. I feel/look leaner too.

I think your idea is a great call.

Cool. I'm going to give this a try. Worst case scenario, the stubborn areas maintain the appearance they have now. I think I'll be satisfied enough with some strength and size increase to not give a damn in the end.

I second this.

Let's do the damn thang.

Fuuuuuu, feels so much better having a couple hundred carbs before working out. I'll end today just above 3000 which will be 200 over maintenance. 90F/361C/207P. Will probably increase gradually to roughly 3200, possibly 3300 depending on rate of weight gain.

Might switch up training as well now that I will be looking to gain. I tried the following before and I really liked it. Allows for each muscle group every 5 days and I can go about each group with a bit more intensity as opposed to upper/lower.

Shoulders/Arms
Legs
Rest
Chest/Back
Rest

The only downside to this is inconsistency throughout the week meaning I might end up having to do something on Saturday and Sunday and the gym is 45 mins away.

Was thinking about my "dilemma" I've been having with this whole cut vs bulk thing and I remembered this picture of my friggan hero, and one of the reasons I got so hooked on this. Don't need shredded abs to look ridiculous.

Yeah, that's when he was a wee-little fella (17 I think). He's made some improvements since then...might be more recognizable in this pic :D

Midpoints after a couple weeks of cutting/bulking/maintaining/partying in Amsterdam. Not much change.

Final Pics, doing them a day early. Got stuff to do tomorrow. *

Start was around 192, continued dieting until around 188 after about 4 weeks. *Did about 2 weeks at maintenance, then started bulking, did some vacations, just got back from one yesterday. *Ended at just about 200. *Time to hop back on the cut-wagon for a few weeks to try and get this stomach thing under control. *Needed to do a bit of a bulk to get some strength back, and now I'd like to finish off the cut process and then continue slow bulking.

End
