Hey folks. This is my entry for the NFSC contest. I'll be doing some bulking with IF.
Disclaimer (or excuse, whatever floats your boat) - I've had my fair share of battling with an ED back in the day, somewhat explaining my pre-pubertal look. Luckily, those days are long gone. I understand if some of you think it's a bad idea to do IF with my background, but it suits my lifestyle and it has become second nature to me after practicing it for quite some time.
Stats:
15
123 lbs +/-
5'8
No idea what my bf% is, any guesses?
Goal:
Gain 0.5-1lb/week
Increase strength as much as humanly possible
Diet:
Intermittent Fasting, 16-18 hours of fasting (some days 19-20)
2 meals, first meal is biggest on rest days, post-workout meal is biggest on lifting days
+500 kcal on lifting days (around 2400 kcals)
+300 kcal on rest days (around 2000+ kcals)
150-200g protein (bit overkill, but I like my proteinz)
150-300g carbs
40-60g fat
Oh, and I use one of those fancy GoWear-Fit devices to track energy expenditure.
Training:
Starting Strength, linear progression
Minimum cardio, maybe some brisk walking from time to time
Misc:
Honestly, I don't think I'll be logging my lifts, as they suck. Like really, really suck. I'm probably weaker than your grandmother. Or maybe I will. Just don't make fun of 'em.
Logging starts tomorrow. The current timezone in Norway is UTC/GMT +2 hours.
Thanks and good luck to all.

Hey Tiger, question for you. With that BB thingy you use how do you feel it does in tracking your 24hrs in calories burned. How to you deal with eating during the day or do you just end up semi guessing / factoring in calories that will be burned during sleep.
Also brave to put up the pics but it seems like you have lost some of your LBM in those pics vs looking at your current AVI =( Did you get hit with a stroke of ED?

Hey there.
Well, after using it for some time I have a good idea of my daily burn rate. I usually plug it in at 7-8pm (right before my last meal, so I can monitor if needed) and can estimate what I'll burn for the rest of the day with pretty good accuracy.
For example, lets say it's 8pm and 4 hours until midnight. I burn around 60 cal/hour at complete rest, so 60*4 equals 240 and I just add that to what I've already burned to know how many cals I need to eat.
Oh, and my avi is a result of good lighting + lots of carbs. ;)

I know you said you are not sure if you should log your lifts. I think it would be smart to, as it will show some area of progress. I know coming from a ED background my self its very hard to get out of the habit. Even when you think that you are doing your self good you can still be turning the wheels.
I ask about the BB due to the fact I wanted to get one for a very long time. But I felt like it would hold me back and only keep me from eating at what it told me I should be and NOT what I really needed to gain. I think they are a great tool for people who are looking to LOSE weight but are not very good in all the research I have done for are training.
Even with your stats I think eating that low of calories could be your down fall. Looking at your body type I can see you are very much lacking much LBM. You are made up of some small amount of muscle and all the other weight is skin, bones, water, organs. I was at 130lb @5'9 and I had about the same look. My body was very fooked up from starving it for long periods of time and over training it.
I would really suggest that you eat no less then 2400 calories on both training and off days and let your body heal its self. You will gain a bit more unwanted weight then pictured at the 1st few weeks but once you get your body on the right track you will gain at your wanted weight per week.
If you keep your self at such a low calorie intake and very strict it will lead to slow or no progress. I hope you are not turned off by what I am saying but when I see your pics they remind me of my self. I have not yet fully recovered from my ED but I am in a much better place these days.

That is some of the best advice I've gotten in quite some time. Thank you.
One of the biggets reasons I decided to join the NFSC competition is because of what you said in your first paragraph: "Even when you think that you are doing your self good you can still be turning the wheels." Ignorance is bliss, and that goes even more for someone recovering from an eating disorder. I want to believe I'm more recovered than what I really am.
I am indeed very, very skinny, your advice about eating more may be the best thing to do in my current position. The skinnyness in my pics is a little be shocking, even to me.
Oh, and your physique is very inspirational. It's weird to think that you once were in my position, but it's also good motivation.
But I need to go - band practice. Again, thank you. I will try to reflect some more on everything you said.

No problem at all T1ger. I know about 20 new logs just spawned into this section and I wont be following more then half. But this one I will be in for hands down. The advice I gave to you was once given to me ;) Always happy to pass it along.
And thank you for the comment on my physique. Its been a struggle every day and gaining weight some times feels harder then it was to just restrict my self to death. It wasn't until I used food OVER train as my main tool. Once you get your body going into the right direction you will be shocked as to how much we EDer's under estimate our body. I have been eating 2800 off days and 3200 training days for months now to keep my gains steady, slow and keeping progress moving.
There was a time that I was so afraid to eat any and trained till my body felt like it was going to give out on me. I wasn't strong at all and all my lifts stalled at such low weight. I know for a fact I was taken in less then 1k cal a day and burning triple that. Probably the most shocking thing ever was breaking 3k in calories and learning that thats what it took to grow.
I keep my training to Upper/Lower 4days in the gym with Sat/Sunday doing a little light cardio. 2mile jog out doors now that its getting nice out and I have added a small bit of core work to after my Sunday jog to test the waters.
Thats a big improvement from training 7days a week and under eating. I actually at one point avoided all mirrors for a few months as I couldn't even face my self in the mirror. But yet I still have a long road a head of me. If you need anything let me know. Will be reading this log and keeping track of you ;)

t1ger, I will be following your progress as well, very much looking forward to it. Although I am also competing against you and many others, I am very keen on seeing the transformations that are provided.
Don't be embarassed by your pictures, or your lifts, everyone has a starting point and no man should scoff at another's desire to better and improve himself, but rather use it motivaiton and encouragement to do the same.
Hope to see you log more pictures and lifts

~Ian~That's awesome to hear. Great job on everything you've accomplished, I'm sure it hasn't been easy. Gaining weight is a bit hard mentally, but I'll push through no matter what. ;)

Starting Strength
Workout A
Lifts
Squat:
65 x 5
105 x 3
130 x 2
145 x 5
145 x 5
145 x 5
Bench:
35 x 5
55 x 3
75 x 2
85 x 5
85 x 5
85 x 5
Deadlift:
105 x 5
130 x 3
155 x 2
185 x 5
Notes: I'm obviously starting light, especially on the bench (lol). The workout went fine, not much to say. Short and intense. Duration was around 45-50'.
I'm actually using kilograms, so it's a bit annoying having to convert it to lbs all the time, but yeah-yeah. :)
Diet
2300 cals (+500)
211g protein
43g fat
246g carbs
Notes: I only burned 1800 cals today (very low amount of LBM and pretty low activity level other than lifting), so I didn't even get to eat 2400. :p Instead of keeping it at a set amount of calories (2400), I'll use what I said in the first post about +500 on lifting days and +300 on non-lifting days. Will adjust if needed.
Overkill on protein intake to say the least, but it'll be lower on non-lifting days, so I don't see the great harm.
Lower fat, higher carbs on lifting days, vice versa for non-lifting days.

Dont worrie to much on the burned at the moment. Its more the big picture you want to focus on. I wouldn't say that your burning low calories due to small LBM but most likely you need to get your body back in the swing of things. ED, can cause your body to go into retard starvation and it will make burning calories almost impossible for you. Once you get your body back in order you are going to be needing to keep dumping fuel into the fire =)
Are you also feeling stuffed after that amount of calories or do you feel like you could sneak in some more eats if you didn't see those numbers on the BB tracking?
P.S I have over kill of pro intake most days =) Dont feel bad, eat what ever you are happy with and your body likes the most. I know I just tried to do heavy fats, low carbish and I hated it. I felt great the 1st day and then freaking flat as heck the next.

I felt great the 1st day and then freaking flat as heck the next.I agree with you 100%, it's just that I might as well take advantage of the GoWear. :p I feel that it's pretty accurate most of the time and it gives me numbers in the ballpark of pretty much every formula out there. 1800-1900 / 123 = 15 cal per lb, seems pretty normal.
I was more than stuffed, and even had some problems getting in the last cals. But it varies. There've been days where I could still eat more after I've consumed according to the GoWear, so I'm not sure. If I'm hungry I eat. :)

Rest Day
Diet
2200 cals (+300)
175g protein
66g fat
216g carbs
Notes: I was more active today than yesterday, playing the drums all day + lots of walking around, so I burned more even without any formal exercise. More fat, a little bit lower on the protein and the rest crabs. Good stuff.
I had some insane energy levels today. I literally jumped around like a rabbit. Literally. It felt great. :D

Barbell Rows:

Notes: Easy workout. I have a lot more energy than before so I could've continued into oblivion. Duration was 60' or thereabouts.
Diet
2300 cals (+500)
211g protein
43g fat
246g carbs
Notes: The excact same food and therefore the excact same macros as Monday. :p I find it funny how I burn less on training days in comparison to rest days, perhaps I have more energy on rest days --> higher NEAT, caused by my higher surplus on training days or something? I don't know.
Getting through the 16-18 hr fast is no problem, unless I'm bored to death, which I'm usually not. :)
Bulking is fun.

Rest Day
Diet
2400 cals (+300)
178g protein
67g fat
247g carbs
Notes: New calorie high! And a whole lot of carrots. Wo-hoo. I feel kinda bad for not posting any food pics, when this log is in the Nutrition-section and all. But you guys aren't missing out on anything - my diet is simply plain and boring. :p
I think I may be underestimating my calories by a little bit on rest days like today, but I don't really care whether I'm eating 300 or 500 cals over maintenance. As long as I'm happy and getting stronger, I'm good.
Double bass drumming is fun as hell by the way.

I apologize for the lack of updates. Life has been overly stressful for me lately, lots of stuff that I find to personal to post about.
I have been getting in my workouts (and obviously progressing well with mah awesome newbie gains), food, and all that jazz, but I have lacked the mental energy to log. As well as the fact that I am trying to decrease my daily focus on nutrition and training, and instead put my focus over on other important parts of life (school, future, my social life, etc.).
I will try to start logging again on Monday. I may skip logging my diet/macros for reasons mentioned above.
Until then,
See Ya

Okay, folks.. I need some input on this. I think the GoWear might be underestimating, but I am not sure whether to up calories or not.
It has only been two weeks give or take, but my weight has been one hundred percent stable (srs) every time I have been on the scale (3-4 times in total, at the same time on an empty stomach). There have also been a few problems in terms of hunger, but that could easily be caused by other things. Oh, and my vasculatiry has increased (ab veins FTW).
It gives me numbers along the lines of 1800-1900 cals on somewhat active days, 1600-1700 cals on sedentary days and 2100-2200 on very active days. Yeah, I am small, but the numbers still seem kinda low.
My calorie surplus has been a stable 300-500 (some days even 600!) every single day, so if I am to increase by lets say 10 % and the GoWear is actually accurate, my daily surplus would be as high as 500-700 cals/day.
I am not sure what to do..

You know what I am going to tell you to do ;) Bump it up my friend! Use the BB as a tool to see activity burned but if it is off then just factor in the calories you need to add on. I know a few threads I found was people having the same problems and they would have to factor in or take out some calories. What ever you are eating now keep at it and on workout days add in 100cal on top of what you had been doing. See if that gets the bump in weight going.
Dont have to make a big jump but just slap on 15g carb and a few more grams of fat. Bump it up!

Id say dont even wait and just jump right on it. You will probably see a small small gain just from the bump. + what if in a few days you hold a bit more water weight and then get the idea in your head to keep on waiting just a tad bit longer =) Its been a few weeks and the scale isnt moving.
Also with that gowear does in maybe have to be updated? Like maybe your LBM to BF% changed or something silly you are over looking that could be messing up your reading?

It gives me numbers along the lines of 1800-1900 cals on somewhat active days, 1600-1700 cals on sedentary days and 2100-2200 on very active days. Yeah, I am small, but the numbers still seem kinda low.
My calorie surplus has been a stable 300-500 (some days even 600!) every single day, so if I am to increase by lets say 10 % and the GoWear is actually accurate, my daily surplus would be as high as 500-700 cals/day.
I am not sure what to do..
Hi! Those numbers seem ridiculously low. There are some people who seem to get really low numbers like that with theirs. Mine never goes below 1730, and it rarely hits that. That's only on days where I am completely bedridden. Usually I burn between 1900-2300. And I'm a little girl :p If I were you I'd either see if you could get a new one, or borrow one for a day and compare, or forget about those numbers altogether and go by the results. That doesn't seem right to me at all, it can't be right, that's retarded :p

Activity: 1 hour brisk walking and 1 hour lifting + everyday life
Notes: I decided to move the GoWear to my calf (for no particular reason) and wash it with alcohol to get rid of all the gunk. Coupled with some walking and a highish activity in general I got a rather nice burn in comparison to the past few days.
I aimed for a 600 calorie surplus (+100 more than before), ate around 2800-2900 cals. Around 60 grams of fat (a bit high), 210 grams of protein (a bit high as well) and 350 grams of Liocarcinus vernalis.
I usually see get around 6 hours of sleep, sometimes even less, even though I go to bed around 9-10 pm and wake up at around 6 am, so I am pretty happy with almost 8 hours of sleep. :)

well if your not gaining any weight you need to increase calories.Yep, gonna increase my daily surplus by around 100 cals and monitor scale weight. :)

Man I so want one of those thingy-ma-jiggers. lol Gonna order me one any day of these just need to make sure its worth the price. IYO is it worth it?Yes, I would say so. It is not 100 % accurate, but gives a good guideline to monitor from. As well as all the other NEAT (see what I did there? ;)) features, it is overall pretty nifty. It is kind of expensive though, after the 6-month trail (or however long the trial period is) is over and you need to pay *insert whatever you have to pay per month here* to keep up with the subscription.

T1ger, how are you finding the accuracy with the Gowearfit bro?

T1ger, how are you finding the accuracy with the Gowearfit bro?Well, considering my age there may be some problems with the algorithms. Stuff that probably does not affect you. ;)
This study from '07 shows that the SenseWear armband underestimates a lot of stuff for children (age 11-13):
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17986918
And this study shows a underestimation of 18 % in overweight and obese children with the SenseWear armband 6.1 (frankly I do not know whether the GoWear is based on the 5.1, 6.1 or some other version of the SenseWear armband): http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19997020
I think it underestimates my burn by at least some, but I am not sure about the degree of underestimation. Numbers like 1700-1800 on days I am at school and sedentary for the rest of the day, seem a bit low for a 15 year old kid. Coupled with the fact that my weight has been stable with a daily surplus of 300-500 calories over the estimated burn for 2 weeks, makes me wonder.
These sites are often recommended to teens for estimating energy needs, and they give me numbers way higher than the GWF:
http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html
http://nutritiondata.self.com/tools/calories-burned
^ ~2200 cals when sedentary, about the same as the GWF on days with lots of activity (1 hour walking, 1 hour lifting, lots of NEAT). 500-600 more than what the GWF says when I am sedentary.
Honestly, I am a little bit confused.

To be blunt duder I think you need to call those Mofo's up and tell them that there product is fooked up. There is NO way in heck those numbers are right for you. I know your a little duder but still 2000K on workout days + cardio + everyday life = BS.
I just cant see how you are not burning more and then on top of that you are eating way more then what its saying you burn but yet you stalled out on gains for weeks. Maybe there is a recall on your GW or the comp can send you a NEW one.

Putting on your calf might give a bit more burn. I know a few people said they put it on there leg so no one would know they had one. But at the end of the day it still showed a higher burn.
Id just tell them that you track every calorie that hits your mouth and you know for a fact that its broken. If you are tracking macro's and you are eating way more then that thing is say you are burning and not gaining weight you would think they'd understand. One would think lol, its worth a try or to see if they know about any problems with maybe your model #.

Like I said its going to give you a higher cal's burned on the calf. There are a few posts out there of people trying it and all coming back with the same conclusion of getting higher numbers on calf. One guy even had 2 of them, One on the arm and other on the leg. CALL THEM UP. If I had mine for a day or 7 years it wouldnt make a difference. If the product is busted what good is it to you ;)

Okay, so todays workout went absolutely terrible (it's 6pm here in Norway).
I felt really, really bad the whole day, and was even thinking about skipping lifting all together. But I couldn't do that.
Started off with some squats. 185 x 5, felt heavy as fu. I had some major struggles, but I managed to get in all reps. Next set, only managed to get 185 x 3. I failed the last set after one rep.
Thinking it was only my legs feeling tired from all the walking + high frequency squatting, I decided to move on and do some benching. The same thing happened. Everything felt heavy. I even failed some light stuff and thus decided to quit the workout. I could've moved on to deadlifts, but I just felt to damn terrible.
I don't know what caused it, and I don't really care. Probably a combination of stress, lack of sleep, and so on.
**** happens, I guess.
What do you guys think I should do in terms of calories? Should I eat in a surplus even though I didn't really lift?
ian0789

Everyone has those days man. There are times when I walk into the gym thinking "Man I am going to kill it on the BENCH!" Next thing I know I am struggling to lift last weeks mid weight.
Probably a bit to late in terms of what you should do but just eat a tad bit over maintenance and relax. Get some recovery time in and enjoy your self. Dont stress it duder.
Also wanted to report in to you my 1st day of BB. 3051 calories burned with 8606 steps taken and 3hr 28min of physical activity done. This was an off day, the only kind of cardio I did was play some basket ball out side since it was beautiful out side. It was just me shooting around. Doing some food shopping, a few loads of wash, playing tug of war with my dog and some random everyday crap IE cooking.
So I would really think that yours might be off if you are getting in a brisk walk and all that other jazz. Playing drums should be burning a lot alone. And having days that you feel really drained could be your body also telling you its running to damn low on fuel!

Okay, so I've been wearing the GoWear on my left calf lately, and I am almost positive the thing has been overestimating. I've been stupid enough not to check my cal burn/min when perfoming different activites, until now. And the results are scary..
I've calculated that is has probably overestimated by a good 500 cals on some days (overestimated walking by about double, and with 1-2 hrs walking you get some serious overestimating..), which means that my surplus has been around 800-1100 cals. Mind = blown. I'm hoping that I calculated smth wrong..
Oh, well. :p
I will move it back to my left arm and hope the numbers won't be too low.

I'm doing some basic testing.. :)
LEFT ARM seems..
● Accurate for walking
● Accurate for running
● Accurate for most day-to-day activities
● Inaccurate for stationary cycling
● Inaccurate for vigorous arm movements
● Inaccurate for driving on bumpy roads
LEFT CALF seems..
● Accurate for stationary cycling
● Accurate for most day-to-day activities not involving legs
● Inaccurate for walking
● Inaccurate for double-pedal drumming
● Inaccurate for driving on bumpy roads

Its going to over estimate for sure when on the leg. They even said that it would since in all there testing / tuning the BB, GW, BM had been set up on the left arm. I think the most important part is if you are eating and not just stuffing your face till you cant eat anymore then dont let the thing stop you.
Its great to see you got your calories up. But before when you hit a wall and the BB told you only burned 2000 cal you would have never been able to bring your self to eat 3k. There might be something wrong with yours as a few of us said before.
As of now, I have gotten higher burns on my upper days by a bit. But then again my last lower day was such crap I felt like I was going to pass out. Today I guess I can compare, but even looking over my burn my numbers never got higher than 6.5-5 area. If it was saying 7-8 id probably rethink what its saying ;)
I know a did happen to read a few people saying they sat on a riding lawnmower and it gave them a burn of 5K lol

Lawnmower = 5k? Hahaha!
I agree with that you said about calorie intake. Now I try to eat when I'm hungry and not let the GoWear stop me just in case it underestimates on arm (it gives me pretty low numbers; 2300 vs. 3000 on calf).
Today I guess I can compare, but even looking over my burn my numbers never got higher than 6.5-5 area. If it was saying 7-8 id probably rethink what its saying ;)Are you talking about walking or cycling? :p I think the 8-9 cal/min number is correct for cycling. I'm pretty sure the GoWear takes my age into consideration --> higher burn caused by being less metabolic efficent (higher energy requirements per kilogram of body mass) and probably some other stuff.
I get the exact same numbers when I input cycling manually (which is what customer support recommend to do). :)

I meant lifting ;) I really dont do much cardio other then a fast 10min brisk walk on the tread and other then weekends when I take my pup out for hikes.
I wanted to make it a point to really not do any cardio on the cycle of ellip when i got my BB. Brisk walk is all I really need, fawk my 8hr work shift is like my cardio lolz.
