I use the pill form (convenient for me) I pop a serving before weights or cardio.

I know Layne Norton swears by it

I'm using 10-11g BCAAs (powder form added to some Crystal Light) every morning before cardio. I feel like I haven't dropped much muscle at all thus far into my cut. You'll inevitably lose some, but BCAAs seem to help keep that to a minimum.

I used it religiously through my prep last year, along with alot of other supplements. It was getting too pricey for me to continue and so I cut out alot of supps from my contest prep this year. I havent taken BCAA's once in the last 22 weeks and I'm still bigger and leaner than ever, I dont think they made that much of a difference for me. I'm also a pretty mesomorphic person so I dont catabolize as bad as some ectomorphs out there who may see the benefit of. Personally, No difference.

Whats the point if you're taking in enough protein ?

I absolutely use bcaa's throughout the day during contest prep. The main reason is to keep the amino acid pool full throughout the day, so that even in a calorie deficit, you will maintain your muscle proteins. BCAA's are the major amino's the body can use to synthesize glucose from when liver stores are emptied, and can also make up up to 10% of the bodies energy usage during cardiovascular exercise. Also, BCAA's can help interrupt the tryptophan amino acid from entering the brain, which causes higher levels of fatigue, especially during your workouts. So, using BCAA's while in a deficit not only retains more muscle mass, it will help allow you to push slightly harder throughout the day, during weight training, and during cardio.
Personally, I use about 10-14 grams intra workout, and a few grams in between each meal. This way, since my body is turning to using amino's for glucose production, it will use the added ones first, sparing far more muscle tissue.

this.

i dropped bcaa's, creatine, and beta-alanine this year (in part b/c i'm currently unemployed) and have seen absolutely no difference. no loss in strength, no change in energy levels, consistent progression in weight loss. obviously that's not definitive evidence that these supplements are useless (that's not what i'm saying at all), but FOR ME, it proves that their value was significantly exaggerated in my mind.

I have noticed the EXACT same thing. I wanted to use BCAAs but just didn't really have the extra cash to throw around, and it hasn't made ANY difference

You need to sip xtend ALL DAY LONG to get ripped. At least a 30 serving bucket every 3 days.

:D OK, maybe not, but I feel two scoops along with your workout is good insurance. Definitely not necessary if you are well fed going in.....but for the OCD.....its good piece of mind.

That's kind of how I feel. It's insurance for when you're on a restricted calorie diet. Theoretically, if you're eating enough protein from whole foods, you don't NEED them. But if you can afford them then why not?

First you say you dont need them, then someone agrees with you and you try to start an argument..?
Like you said if you're getting enough protein in your diet whats the point of buying BCAA's?

The biggest advantage I see to BCAA's is that you know they are in your bloodstream when you want. There is little arguement that BCAA's provide a buffer against muscle catabolism when you are doing catabolic activity. Yes, if you timed your protein intake correctly prior to training, then they are "probably" not needed. But again, for me.....its insurance.

No disrespect, but I would hardly say that our posts were saying the same thing. The post I responded to claimed that BCAAs are a scam. All I wanted was some proof that the supplement industry was scamming consumers by selling BCAAs because I think that's a BS claim. The industry often markets BCAAs as "essential for muscle retention" and, while I don't completely agree with that statement, it's a far cry from a scam (scam example: tribulus is still marketed by some companies as an effective muscle building test booster when it has proven to NOT be). BCAAs do provide benefits and are a nice luxury if you can afford them.

They are cheap enough. I don't see why you wouldn't want the extra insurance.

Agreed...if you are going to drink water during training, before and during cardio, etc.....why not add some BCAA's to the mix for a little extra support.

Yeah, I'm the poor kid that uses the doggie bag Cytosport Whey from Costco. One scoop, 27 grams protein. I just sip throughout session. Easy enough. Cost? Dirt cheap.

I am a very nice person IRL. Have tons of friends, I get a long with everyone. Im also a HUGE optimist.

But every post of yours , hell everytime I see your avi, your username I swear I have a million thoughts relating to smashing your face with a shovel.

Anyways, if anyone wants to see if BCAA's supps work. Half way through your workout, or at the end when you're getting tired. Pop a BCAA pill and I can guarantee you'll feel the difference !

And JohnBrowne, congrats, in 5 years that Ive been here Ive not ignored one person in all that time until now.

This would be a good post if acute catabolism actually meant anything in the big picture... it doesn't.

If you can't afford the money or the quality calories...you are spending them both in the wrong places. As far as being necessary...no, but neither are carbs and I'm sure you eat plenty of those to MAXIMIZE your recovery and growth.

lol at you telling me that i'm spending my money in the wrong places. that's hilarious. worthy of a neg.

i would much rather have 10+ additional grams of protein from chicken, eggs, whey, whatever than a shaker cup full of bcaa's (my opinion...spend your calories as you see fit)
