View Full Version : What happened to this forum??!!!

I remember the good old days when you could ask a question, and politely get the answer you were hoping to get! What happened? And what is all this scientific evidence crap. I remember the good old days when you could just look at someone's avatar and know for certain that what they were saying about muscle protein synthesis, fatty acid oxidation, etc, was 100% correct.
And what really gets me is how people can't just give black & white simple answers on stuff like, "what's the best dose of dextrose postworkout?"... I mean, all it takes is posting a number, not some smartass remark about how it's not needed. I don't like to hear that stuff, especially after memorizing the rules I've learned from magazines, and various buff guys at my gym. If I want to know what's better for me between brown rice or white rice, why can't people just tell me what I've always heard the big guys say?
What really REALLY bugs me is how everything has to have some sort of evidence beyond anecdote. Why can't someone tell me whether Body for Life or P90X is the best program? Both of those have the best anecdotal evidence other than the ads in Flex magazine. Just look how ripped & built the spokespeople of those programs are. I don't need a scientific study to tell me that those guys are doing it right! Discussions about how the body works don't need no Pubmed. All it takes is just sharing with eachother what works for us & our buddies at the gym. THAT is true knowledge of how the body works.
I just wish this forum could get back to the good old days when you could post a question asking how many minutes you can wait to eat your postworkout meal before the catabolisms come, and you could get a simple answer like, "15 minutes bro, works for me", or "I respectully disagree bro, 10 minutes and I'm already shrinking"... I just wish that I could ask a question like whether it's okay to have white potatoes once a week instead of sweet potatoes. A simple yes or no will do, but instead people will post a bunch of sciency stuff & tell me that I can go with personal preference. Anybody else with me on this, or am I the only one?

I fully agree with you budd. I'm so lost from reading something in one magazine then coming on here and hearing the complete different. I understand if people get upset when a person asks repetitive questions...however most the time we are just looking for some simple hands on feedback. Good judgement!

I think you need to do family counseling for a living or something.
This is a forum, people have opinions, people have strong opinions, people will get shat on, feelings will be hurt, lulz will be had, life will go on. If you can't handle getting picked on a little bit or your opinion getting torn to pieces, then you shouldn't share it. Honestly, who cares about the war between IIFYM and broscience. If it is good information, share it. If it is about someone getting their feelings hurt or maybe feeling bad STFU & GTFO!

"But then you have these kids not listening to you because your post wasn't in the form of a study, which is all they listen to. Pubmed this and pubmed that. Normal discussion isn't allowed. Agree with O.P.... I spend time on other forums and this one scares the **** out of me. I haven't really posted here simply because I see everyother thread ya'll a ripping the o.p. a new *******... getting off topic, posting b.s. scientific crap that will take me 3 weeks of studying just to understand... and after reading 40 posts in a thread you rarely answer the o.p.'s answer!
So I just stick to the search button... don't really feel like posting on here.

State of forum is dont be strict with making sure you eat real food. Just take whatever it is and fit it in. Disagree? You get negged.
One must apply food habits to life style habits... You can substitute the word meth/coke/ciggs for the word food. Coke in moderation is not possible... it permanently drains natural occurring dopamine stores...

I remember the good old days
In the good old days, we didn't have forums, or computers. Well some people had computers, but they didn't lift weights, and nobody used internet, just dial up BBBs. The only source of information we had was M&F or the jacked guy at the gym...oh wait there weren't jacked guys at my gym cause they were all in Venice. But that's ok, we drank a gallon of milk a day before GOMAD, and we went to Great Earth and bought the Weider Milk & Egg protein cause that was the choice. and the hottest girls in M&F were Rachel McLish and that blonde girl with the big hair. Ah yes...the good old days...

Hooo, buuuuuuurn.
On topic, the best results come when the book (or pubmed) knowledge is combined with the everyday experience. People with only book knowledge will say that experience is just broscience anecdote and doesn't matter, people with only experience will say that book knowledge is just egghead ramblings and is irrelevant. Both are wrong.
Reading pubmed articles has helped guide my coaching and advice to clients, who have thus got better results. Working under experienced coaches, or watching people like Rippetoe and Dan John coach others, this has also guided my coaching, and got people better results. In fitness as in any other area, it's the combination of book knowledge and experience that helps people achieve useful things.

This.. lol PT forum unite and invade!
I'm glad SOME of you bros agree with me. Let me quote the immortal words (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpost.php?p=641520233&postcount=224) of esteemed member Simmo0508 that capture my sentiments precisely:
"But then you have these kids not listening to you because your post wasn't in the form of a study, which is all they listen to. Pubmed this and pubmed that. Normal discussion isn't allowed. It's a university exam instead. Unless you quote someone else, you aren't entitled to or credible enough to know what you're talking about."
That statement is true. Just because you disagree with it, doesn't mean others can't their that point of view. Welcome to what a forum is meant to be used for.
The main problem other bodybuilding websites have with this sub-forum here at bodybuilding.com is that the majority of people posting things, have very little to no experience (or a low training age) with bodybuilding itself. This sub-forum is actually a laughing stock if you aren't aware. It does not represent the site as a whole very well, not just because of the bad advice sometimes given, but the way people interact as a whole.
Like Kyle said, just reading some articles or some studies does not give one enough coverage in order to plainly dismiss what other more experienced people say it it's own right.
The main beef people have with here is that most simple threads that start off with a question, turns into a self-righteous circle jerk where people try to convince others that they should believe what they personally believe. A topic about A, will somehow get turned all the way into Z. There's only one thing the OP generally wants - a simple and clear answer to THEIR question. If you don't agree with a certain topic he's bringing up, then noone's making that person reply.
If the OP's way off, then yeah a quick suggestion to correct him is fine, but all the links and paragraph after paragraph of overly scientific mumbo jumbo does not help anyone, because most people cannot even understand the terms used. So in the effort of trying to help, it's just a waste of time in the end. Most people want to speak with other people, not with an article or a study. They want to have an actual conversation.
One must understand that the perspective of a young teenager (whom the majority frequents this sub-forum) is much different from the perspective of an experienced bodybuilder who's not only older, but in the actual fitness industry itself. There's a lot of knowledgeable guys in the business that used to post here that don't anymore, because these young kids just think they can do things they way they do currently... forever. Which as we know, doesn't work that way. The body and lifting/nutrition in general does change as the body gets on. Like i mentioned in that post you sarcastically quoted there in bold, all these kids do is listen to these particular studies and have no actual experience with it's application.
Knowledge itself, is nothing without personal application. It's worthless to you if you don't use what you've learnt.
So then when guys who do have experience with things and do have the successes in this business try to help, they get shut down because of a combination of A) haters gon hate, B) if i agree, i'll look like a bro! oh noes!! C) that wasn't on pubmed, so it must not be true and/or work!
Noone minds if people disagree, it's just this whole cult attitude and following some things have.
- broscience: a word that doesn't even exist in real life
- IIFYM crew: a bunch of small guys who typically can't give up their lollipop in order to eat a better diet and show greater commitment so use a little term to justify a certain habit. The initial principle of the idea i agree with, as i do those things myself, but the way they act and present their posts, is not helping them out one bit. It's very holier than thou. To newbies, it's not always explained very well
- experience doesn't mean anything, study's rule all!: like Kyle said, a combination of both is vital in order to succeed in bodybuilding. Knowing human physiology and nutritional basics, but also learning what works for an individual via trial and error.
- mods that actually belittle their members and go against their own T&C at times
Those 4 points above is what is destroying this particular sub-forum imo. Things that do not even exist elsewhere. It's la la land and a bunch of guys who want to feel smart, trying to "one-up" the bigger guys because they know deep down they'll never get to that size or condition.
The biggest thing that has always been a problem... is that most people don't associate their posts with BODYBUILDING, and associate it with WEIGHT LOSS or WEIGHT GAIN. One is a highly specific sport, and one is a general goal. One requires huge amounts of dedication, and the other is a lot more simplistic. The name is bodybuilding.com, where size and conditioning matters. Not generalweightlossgain.com, where a number on the scale is all that matters.
To put it another way, there's actually posters in the normal Misc that have more bodybuilding knowledge than guys here in Nutrition. Sure most threads don't seem that way, but the people themselves are there.
Losing Fat forum doesn't have this problem. Contest Prep forum doesn't have this problem. Misc doesn't have this problem. Exercise forum doesn't have this problem.
I expect to be repped, negged, banned (like always for disagreeing with the "masses"), but whatever helps people sleep at night and prevent teh catabolizmz.

Simon you HAVE TO explain this to me, you're the perfect guy to do it:
Why are the muscular bros so angry all the time? I observed this always and can't figure this out. Is it the low fat intake and high carb that compromises the happy hormones and gives too much energy? It can't be that because if I'm not mistaken you're now on 120 grams fat and only moderate carbs.
Where does this intensity/anger/aggressiveness come from?

This.. lol PT forum unite and invade!

This is an honest question that is meant with no disrespect intended
As someone who spent years studying nutrition
Researching
publishing
Making a living giving dietary/nutritional advice
How do you reconcile your flippant dismissal of so many questions and telling so many people on the forums that X and Y dont really matter?
If we are just going to say hit your macros and anything else is irrelevant, what point is there to a nutrition forum?
Note- I am far from some bro who advocates meal timing/frequency or no carbs after dark.

You make an attempt to discuss things rationally and have a normal conversation with people and bring up WHY you disagree, and you get **** like that above that you're meant to find in the Misc (i love teh Misc btw), not in the Nutrition forum where people always ask for things to be talked about in detail... and that post above is from a moderator funnily enough lol

Well the brown pants are a lot slower to go out of style, so they're clean. The white pants go in and out of style very quickly, so you must use good timing. Generally, the whiter the pant, the dirtier.

I really don't think that people 'avoid' this forum. Frankly, I think these boards frequently receive more random googlers than just about anywhere. The only people who know to avoid this place are phaggots sippin' on dat haterade from other fitness websites and people who post in other sections that know how it is here.

I guess they rather hear what they want to hear when they ask a question. Than to be told what is true based on the scientific literature that is out.
I too was thinking that. I was a massive broscientist. Weird though, even though I didn't understand why at first, I accepted Alans word on it. Seems like others a having a hard time accepting it.
Can't see how people are agreeing with him when he is obviously being sarcastic. People need to get their sarcasm meters fixed.

Not everybody knows who Alan is and that this was a joke/mock thread initially. Not everyone spends tons of time on here to keep up with what's going on.
If people agree with the point mentioned however, that's their choice.

Not everybody knows who Alan
Well that explains it all to me. People who don't know him aren't just going to take his word. :)

Can Alan post a thread making fun of those guys that spend way too much time worrying and crying about their "cheat meals" next? That'd be fun I think.

He does'nt seem angry. It seems your'e having fun leading him into anger however.lol
Dude, you seem like a good guy and all. But please, PLEASE. DOESN'T. YOU'RE. It just hurts my eyes. Please, think of my eyes.
The ' takes the place of the missing letter. Does not = Doesn't as the 'o' is omitted. You are = You're as the 'a' is omitted. Place the ' where the letter is being replaced.

if they're brown pants they're clean right? white pants are dirty cause the cotton is more processed.
hmm
what about black pants?
http://static.funnyjunk.com/gifs/thats_racist01.gif
Well the brown pants are a lot slower to go out of style, so they're clean. The white pants go in and out of style very quickly, so you must use good timing. Generally, the whiter the pant, the dirtier.
There's no such thing as clean or dirty pants...oh, hell, never mind.
what are the point of these posts?

now I'm mad that I can't check the forums from work and I miss gems of threads such as this one
I am still trying to figure out what works for me since I know that everybody reacts differently to what they put in to their bodies. I have some pro BBer friends who are very strict with the "clean" foods and tell me that if I don't eat plain chicken breast/brown rice/steamed vegetables every meal I will "get fat". I was fat for many years so it scares me, but I still enjoy delicious foods and calculate everything to hit my macronutrient and calorie goals each day. There are many ways to skin a sweet potato...or you can just mash that bitch up with the skin and enjoy!

He does'nt seem angry. It seems your'e having fun leading him into anger however.lol
He's probably hoping Simmo will flame out so he has an excuse to ban or at least ignore him, and will thus have an excuse to ignore the substantive points Simmo made, or that Simmo will at least say, "fck this" and wander off.
It makes discussions much easier and more pleasant if everyone agrees with you and tells you how awesome you are.
If we are just going to say hit your macros and anything else is irrelevant, what point is there to a nutrition forum?
You are assuming that the purpose of these forums (all of them, not just the nutrition ones) is to serve as a place of discussion and information. It's not. The owners have one intention, the moderators another; the owners want to sell supplements, the moderators - at least some of them - want to be fawned upon by admirers.
Any discussion and learning is purely incidental.

It makes discussions much easier and more pleasant if everyone agrees with you and tells you how awesome you are. Wrong. I messed with Simmo for the sheer fun of it, and ended up actually repping him because it turns out he has a good sense of humor. So much for your "bait & kill the opposition" hypothesis.

Any discussion and learning is purely incidental. Wrong about my intention behind this thread. Also, this particular section of your post leads me to believe you hate the world.
