Look up "Ketosis" or "keto-diet." It focuses more on protein and healthy fats rather than carbs and many people make their daily amounts of kcals at a deficit. It seems to work with many people who often get good results.
Its actually what I am doing right now. Over the past few months I've only averaged 1/2 pound weight loss a week and I'm trying to speed up the process while maintaining what lean body mass I have and who knows, maybe even gain some muscle mass while doing it.
I would post links to the stickies but I don't have enough posts. There is a forum dedicated to Keto-Diets here that has a bunch of stickies that would probably help you with many of your questions. If not the people here are very knowledgable about this stuff and they'll give you some quick pointers.
lol just watch out for the gnarly "keto-breath"

I tried a keto diet for a while but I suffered in school mentally from a lack of carbohydrates for energy...

Why is this in advanced losing fat.
Thats the problem, no one will admit their problem is simple, everyone's issue requires "advanced" knowledge and thinking abilities.

yup just eat a calories deficit with protein per lean body mass and the rest fat.
make sure to take multivitamin and green veggies / fiber..
