My week from hell:

One of my employees has really been dropping the ball lately on a lot of stuff. He's perpetually disgruntled and a constant complainer. One of the things he likes to complain about is my predecessor, and how she never gave him any meaningful work to do, and during the year end performance reviews he said the same of me.

So I made him lead on a major project. He did next to nothing on it for a month, and what he did do was completely wrong, then he called in sick for two days before it was due, so I had to finish it myself. Correction; I did it myself.

Then he screwed up on one thing after another for the last two months, and again dropped the ball on another project, and again called in sick for two days; one of which we had a conference call scheduled to discuss the project.

The call was cancelled, and when he returned to work I re-iterated the importance of the prroject and what was required. He sent me garbage in return, so I replied to his e-mail asking for some analysis and conclusions (as opposed to a spreadsheet with data)

The next morning he reads the e-mail, replies that I am "too critical" of his work and walks out. Quit. Done. No notice whatsoever, on the first day of the month. We're accountants for a very large public company, with very tight reporting deadlines. So all week I had to do his work and mine.

*sigh*

So yesterday I am talking with another manager, and he says that this guy has been complaining to everyone that I overload him with too much work, and that none of it is his responsibility.

OK, two projects in addition to his regular duties is not a lot, and both were on costing, and he's our COST ACCOUNTANT.

So this wanker is crying to me and my boss that he doesn't have enough meaningful work, then cries to everyone else in the company that I'm some slave driver overloading him, then up and quits with no notice because he didn't like me calling him out on the fact that his report was not detailed enough.

WTF is wrong with people???

Sounds like an allergy . . . to hard work and responsibility.

There is a lot of that around, unfortunately. Some people take the initiative to do things right and to do whatever it takes to deliver. Some people just "don't have it" and think they should get an increasingly bigger paycheck for showing up. The people who fall in the latter group suck tremendously for those in the former.

At least this clown is gone now . . . hopefully you can backfill with someone worthwhile.

My question is why did the company keep him on this long? If he was this incompetent and did not meet deadlines why was he not terminated?

This is what I do not understand with large corporations. They will keep the dead weight on because of tenure but lay off those of us that are productive employees because we were the last ones hired.

Exaclty; in the short term it's going to be a HUGE pain in the ass, but I'm looking at is as an opportunity. An opportunity to get someone on board that is eager and accountable.

Sara it is hard to fire some people in large organizations due to HR red tape. Company is afraid of getting sued so you have to take several steps to do it. At one company I was at we fired no one. We put them on 30 day improvement plans. Which usually meant they quit the next day anyway. It irked me becuase it is hours and hours of work to put someone on a plan. Would have been a lot easier to say. Your not doing a fcking thing and are a pain in my arse. Step into my office becuase your fcking fired.

There is a price to pay for being one of the ones that fulfills his end of the bargain. Even harder for someone that wants to develop a reputation as the "go to" to get the job done no matter what.

The rewards pan out over time as the cream rises to the top.

I'm still languishing while waiting for my opportunity to cash in on my diligence. But still confident that my day will come.

I know trust me, you are talking to an unemployed HR Administrator LOL Yeah they even fire those that do the firing. Downsizing sucks because I know there are quite a few employees that are still in my department that deserved to go before me. But like you said, EEO and tenure saved their asses. They sat there took two hour lunches, friday was mani/pedi day, while I was the one going without lunches and travelling to all the off site locations. It seems that hard work and proper work ethics means little nowadays. Then they wonder why corporate America is collapsing

Sounds like a win win situation Jim. You gave the guy a chance, he proved him self to be a bitch. You also got him to quit instead of firing him. Now you don't have to deal with unemployment or wrongful termination issues. Sounds like the guy was a cancer, that would have just brought others down with him. There is always one on every ship.

I wouldn't lose any sleep on him running his mouth about you. Most people can see through that game, unless they are same type of person.

My big concern is that it reflects poorly on me as a manager.

There are some in the company that know him and what he was like, and they didn't even blink.

But my Boss is in Chicago and has only met this guy a few times. He is probably wondering wtf I did to make the guy quit like that.

I also found out he doesn't need the job; that's a big deal too. His house is paid for, and he got a big inheritance. That makes a big difference. People that don't need jobs behave a lot differently than people that rely on a paycheque every week to pay the rent, etc.

I can see the concern, but I would bet your boss knows the real deal. Unless hes an accidental boss, he probably has a pretty good idea of how things work. I am sure he also knows you track record Jim.

When you hire the new guy, and things improve, it will be evident. Results speak volume.

Lazy, moaning, bitching, fecker is what he is.

I totally understand Jim.

I went through a period of two or three years of hiring absolute tossers and I questioned my management skills never mind anyone else!

It was srsly a run of bad luck.

The stories I could share with you over a beer and not on here... and these people STILL didn't get sacked.. just disciplinary or even payed off with a large lump sum.

In hindsight, I and I bet you.. could see how you could have been a bit tighter with management and hauled in the reins a bit but you still couldn't have prevented the ultimate outcome.

Good luck with hiring a new person.
