I just did a show in november and came in at 160.3lbs im 5'11 23 years old. I have been told to really take a good year off to gain more quality size. I have been told that it is very unlikely that i have made a good amount of solid gains in a matter 3-4 months. What would your advice be as a fellow bodybuilder? i want to compete but i would rather hear your opinions and this will be the breaker whether i decide to do the show in june or not.

Long controlled offseason is the way to go IMO.

160 at 5'11"? I would definitely say you need to put on some more size. I would try and come in at atleast low 170s. Good luck man

Get bigger, it'll be more worth your time and effort to get onstage

I competed only once, in 1999, and was 146 lbs at 5'10" on contest day. I have a small body structure as well (6.5 inch wrists). I would assume I was roughly about the same degree of development you are now. I didn't beat anybody that day, and haven't competed since. It wasn't that I wanted to quit, it was more due to things in my personal life (i.e. marriage, career) getting in the way of giving the full dedication it requires to be competitive. Now, I'm 215 lbs at 22% bodyfat and still gaining lean body mass. If I were to start my cut now, I would be be about 175 lbs shredded (assuming no muscle loss). I am very eager to get back on stage in 2012, and I am expecting the results of the next contest to be much different.
So, I was where you are once,. From my experience plus the input other competitors have given you, I think it may be worth skipping contests the remainder of the year just to add on size. The best physiques in the 5'10-5'11" height range appear to be about 175-185 lbs. That can vary a little as well based on your bone structure.
Good luck with your training.

The months leading into a contest during prep, and the months leading out of a contest as you walk your calories back up are all wasted time as far as growth goes. If you want to really make noticeable improvements then you will want at least a solid year of no competing, that includes prep dieting. I'd say look to compete somewhere in 2012 and take all of 2011 to make some gains.
