My advice - don't.
T1DM is a completely different kettle of fish than a type 2 when it comes to diets. They need to be much more aware/ in control of their blood sugar levels - if they are not hypo aware they can actually drop REALLY low without warning (some lose the ability to detect hypoglycaemia), and this can cause coma / seizure / death and other nastiness.
They also NEED to give themselves insulin in order to prevent fatal consequences such as DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis). This is regardless of if they are eating. As such, when dieting they need to be EXTRA careful with monitoring their BSL - because their insulin requirements will change as their blood sugar levels change in response to their diets.
Additionally - they also have lots of other 'problems' that can arise -> diseases of the kidney / eye / nerves / blood vessels - all as a result of changes in their blood sugar levels and cholesterol levels. This can impact on things such as their intake of protein (higher protein diets have been shown to worsen PRE existing diabetic nephropathy/ kidney disease). And you don't want to make their situation worse.
Support them in their weight loss - but suggest they see a GOOD sports dietician who deals with diabetics for specific advice. ;)

My brother is a Type 1 diabetic.
My advice - He should see his doctor, not listen to "experts" on a forum that may not know allot about the disease.

Edit: type 1 diabetes
Aslong as your friend already has control of his blood sugars and has a good understanding of his own diabetes then he honestly has absolutley NO excuse to be overweight/ not excersise. I am a type 1 diabetic and i am currently cutting and have cut 30 lbs in 2 months and bulked 40 lbs in 7 months in the last year. No offense to your friend but because he is overweight this leads me to believe he doesnt have control over his diabetes because if he did then he would be eating high GI food and a lower calorie diet which would result in weightloss. Tell your friend to see a nutritionist. But also he should not be afraid of workingout, it is easily the most effective way of controlling your blood sugar levels (other than insluin ofcourse). I would personally get him workingout immedietly and let him go see a nutrionist about the diet aspect because it is very difficult for the average person to understand what a diabetic person should be doing diet wise, heck it took me 2 years to figure it out. Feel free to shoot me a PM with any questions, sadly I have tons of experience lol
