After working out 5 days a week including weight training and carido and a pretty clean diet (i'm not competing so its not completely limitted- but still pretty clean) I went to the gym today to get my bf% taken on one of those scales. I was horrified at 25%. I like to think i'm fairly lean you can see most of my abs/obliques but I don't look like a figure model by all means. i'm 5'2 and 112. Has anyone else ran into an issue like this??

Honestly those scales are one of the most unreliable methods of measuring bf%.

Yep. The scales are crap for absolute numbers. Totally forget bf numbers and trying to know yours. Go by what you see in the mirror. And relax :p

That's horrifying? The one at the gym said I'm 29%. lol

Horrifying? Try 41%, that's horrifying!

If you hold your fat in your butt/hips/thighs (like moi) it will read higher.

*whew* makes me feel much better. I think that the 'trainers' (at my gym the trainers read a book and become personal trainers) should maybe warn people like me that those results may be completely off. That could give a person an eating disorder considering if I'M 25% i'd hate to see what other people are seeing as how i'm not a very big person!

yeah it'd be impossible to see your abs at 25%

^^^^Not necessarily true. Probably true for a male, but a female who holds all of her fat in her lower body could very well show abdominals yet still have 25% body fat.

According to those scales, my BF never changes, .....

I take measurements, maybe every 4-6 weeks, first thing in the am. That way I can see where Im losing/gaining inches. If I lose in my belly I know Im losing fat, when I gain in, say, my shoulders, I am probably gaining mass.

Testify! :D

According to studies, abdominal fat, while a bigger risk health-wise, is much easier to shed. Female reproductive ass and thigh fat is much more stubborn.

Summertown, you don't have a belly. 110% srs.

Thanks dd! I think I am the worst combo of a pear and an apple! Actually what I meant by the above was that I am a pear, and I'd rather be a pear than an apple. I like having a big ass! But julia is right, grass is greener somewhere else usually.

Ummm, really belly fat is easier to lose?? I didn't know that, very interesting.

Well.. depends on your genetic make up too. and MOST girls carry their weight in hips/bum.. so yes theoretically its easier to lose belly fat but not if thats where you hold most of your fat.

I'm a pear and I think I'd rather be a pear than an apple. Although my legs are starting to look MASSIVE on this bulk. lol.
