I was working with a trainer awhile back. My friend also worked with a personal trainer and she did the same 30 min cardio first then 30min lifting second. Is this the most effective way to lose body fat and gain muscle? (wanting to look tight lean.)

Dieting is far greater than cardio in the weightloss department. Add heavy lifting to build muscle. Bam! Results :)

The only diet I know is the South Beach. I hear "eating clean" and it's about the same as the South Beach diet phase 2/3. I think after looking at the transformations of the week diets, that I'm not eating enough and the main thing I'm not eating enough of is protien. Think I might need to get some protien whey shake mix....while I head to the weights.
30 min of cardio is great, it adds more of a calorie deficit and allows you to eat more if you wish.
Don't let there be a time limit for your workout. Goto the gym and work out (different parts on different days + rest days) until you're body is begging you to stop. Doing that you'll probably find a good time to set on working out.
The most important thing is your diet.. MAKE SURE you're on a deficit of 500-1000 calories or you'll lose nothing

You should do your research if that's all you know. You shouldn't consider it as going on a diet, but as a lifestyle change. Check out the stickies in the nutrition section and educate yourself on how you should be eating.
