i wish i had friends who even considered bodybuilding, let alone competing. i tell people about my lifting and eating habits (not even talking about competition) and they say i'm not enjoying life... pisses me the F*** off. then i mention something about competing one day and then they really start to lay it on... i have to walk away because i don't trust myself to be civil.
but i can see how your situation would be very irritating, people just don't understand the actual sacrifices it takes to compete

i've never had anyone take that approach w/ me. everyone i know is very respectful of the discipline and hard work that goes into contest prep.
in fact, i can't even imagine a "normal" person that would believe contest prep is easy. anyone that thinks that is obviously extremely unintelligent. I would not be the least bit offended by their statements as they are clearly incapable of even the simplest deductive reasoning...."hmmm....long periods of literal starvation and excessive training----> easy? not easy?"

>---FLASH BACK---<
This was me. In 2007 I saw the local bodybuilding show put on by my university weightlifting club. My first thought was, eh, I "could do that". So I made the comment. I'm going to be Mr. OSU
This was before i realized how much work was put in. The first year. I didnt even come close. I got 2 of 4 in my class and would have lost to 3 of the 5 in the HW class. So i stuck to my guns, got serious and really worked for it. The next year I became Mr. OSU.
So to the point. I at one point thought it was not that hard until I actually tried. Once i tried i was hooked and work my ass off daily. So i can see both sides. It seems like its kind of easy, but TRY IT, I DARE YOU. is always my response when people say something like this.

I prep people for shows and you wouldn't believe how many people start getting ready for their first show and never make it to show day. They think that it is just going to be so easy, but the first time someone is having a birthday party or something it really hits them that they can not partake in the eating that is going on. Anyone that steps on stage has already accomplished something great.

Anyone can compete. All you have to do is fill out the paperwork and show up. What does that prove?

The diet is the hard part, and its also the part most people don't know about. They assume you just lift weights a lot, do more cardio and end up ripped.

That they can spell their name?

I get alot of people telling me that they want to compete, but they never really get there. It's just an ambition, and usually that's all it'll ever be.
For the ones that see me go through prep, it's actually quite the opposite. People constantly say "I don't know how you can do this" or "I don't have the discipline to do what you do!" I guess I'm just lucky to have a group of friends that are really respectful of it, but when the odd person comes along thinking they can compete I think we should always encourage them. Whether they think it's easy or not, push them to go through it and see what it's like. We really can't change peoples opinions until they actually experience it for themselves.
Yeah, it's annoying when they dumb down the amount of work it takes, but I get a certain solace in the fact that I can experience a level of discipline that average people can only ever dream about. After all, that is what separates those of us that make it to the stage from the ones that pull out. Just gotta accept peoples opinions and move on I guess :)

It's ok, in 20 years you can remind them why did it all.
I love how average people essentially are planning on a miserable existance from...ohh about 35 until death from heart disease, stroke, diabetes at 72.

I'm in the same boat dude, I wish I wasn't the weirdo cause of bodybuilding. Too often I'm looked down upon because bodybuilding is percieved as extreme in a cultish & shallow fashion, I actually wish more folks belittled the sport so they'd try it not just scoff at the diet/work. I'd be psyched to have friends wanna give it a try.

Here is a conversation I had with some bitch about a month back.
Me: Hey, so do you play any sports?
Her: I played volleyball in high school and college, and I play in a rec league now. You?
Me: Well I wrestled in high school and college, but I've been getting into bodybuilding competitions lately.
Her: HAHAHA, I said sports, not some showing of vanity where a bunch of guys get together to see who's muscles are bigger.

When I first started most people at my work actually told me not to bother and that I didn't have the genetics.
So now that I've brought home the pics, the trophies, the sponsorships .... they understand what it takes and what someone goes through. Most people say they could never do what I've done ... I say they just never tried!
Oh and now of course people that don't know what I looked like before love to tell me how I just have great genetics ... lol It's amazing how perceptions change if you never see the before!

I have had people tell me its all vanity as well. I am very new to the sport and I have a long way to go but I have never been more committed to anything. A lot of people don’t have faith in me and others feel that it’s just a modeling contest….. But when I calculate every meal, every oz, every macro, plan my timing of meals and workouts, I know that this sport is the most serious of anything I have ever done before.

Dude.. I know what you mean.
I was at the farmers market and passed by a booth that the lady was selling sugar coating almonds. Not just almonds, which are loaded in fat and super dense in calories, but SUGAR coated. Great...
She offers me some, and with my polite manors I say no thank you..
"oh come on! A handful of nuts won't hurt you".
seriously. Not one or 2, but an entire ****ing handfull!?!?
"No thank you, I am fine without them". I say
"You don't even want to give them a chance? Its not like they will make you fat"
"No thanks, I am on a pretty stciks regiment right now and almonds contain more fats than I can have for today"
"Oh.. I say.. You don't like to enjoy life!" she says with a **** eating grin.
"No, thats not it at all. I enjoy life plenty. I have goals and I am very dedicated to reaching them. I know what I can can't put in to my body and I am dedicated enough to stick to my commitment".
Nothing tastse as good, as being lean feels!!
She had a very sour look on her face, and I was very pissed off. VERY.
Any time anyone tries to knock me for making healthy life choices (especially when it is blatently obvious they have no business crituquing me, I drop words like:
Commitment
Devotion
Dedication
Goals
Accomplishment
(then I follow up with one simple word after a brief pause; LEAN)
These are the thigns that most people in every day society have little concept of, especailly when it comes to fitness.
Add to that a nasty level of insantiy most of use take our diets to in order to get shredded and it becomes damned near impossible for anyone to comprehend the amount of effort it takes. They are so far disconnected that they think, if they can do it, I can do it.
It only makes sense that other people discredit out hard work. They have very few options otherwise.
