I have been trying to lose some weight because i gained about 15 lbs out of nowhere, but im not sure if its because i'm building muscle or if its just more fat. I was a size 3 and now am having a hard time fitting into a 5 and idk wtf is going on. Im eating healthy, going to the gym around 4 times a week and cardio about 4 times a week also [stairmaster, running, sprints, etc]May sound like a stupid question but how much more does muscle weight than fat?
Im 5'3 by the way, so this definitely is out of the ordinary for me, but my legs wont stop getting bigger and im not going that heavy. any exercises to do that wont bulk up my legs?

Eating healthy means nothing. The amount of calories you consume is the primary factor. To lose weight: eat less calories than you maintain. To gain muscle: eat mor than you maintain.

And you gain muscle by lifting weights, not countless hours doing cardio.

Oh, and squats. Do them.

Muscle does not weigh more than fat, it just takes up less space. 1lb of muscle weighs the same as 1lb of fat...because 1lb=1lb.

Barring an obscure medical condition, people don't just gain 15lb 'out of nowhere' - I'd track calories for a short period of time and see if you consuming more than you think.

YOu would know it if you were building 15 pounds of muscle, mainly because you would have been busting your butt in the gym for a year in a half and eating a ton of calories. So it is not muscle. Aside from getting your diet in check, have your hormones checked by a doctor.

I don't understand why people say this. Of course 1lb of anything is the same weight of 1lb of anything else, but does that mean you'd say lead does not weigh more than feathers, because 1lb of feathers weighs the same as 1lb of lead?

When you take weight by volume, muscle weighs more.

To the op, it's not muscle. If you haven't changed anything in your diet or training, you might need to see a doctor. Otherwise, track your calories and drink lots of water and see how it goes.

i have had the exact same problem.. I started lifting and working out more intensely.. aka not only cardio for an hr a day.. about 4 months ago.. in that time i have gone form 120lbs-130... I have tracked my cals.. eating a bit below maintenance (about 1600 a day) and no more 'junk food'.

i am basically freaking out.. but my new thought is hormones.. my thighs are growing and pants arent fitting.. but now my boobs are also all swollen.. i feel like i am inflated with wate or air.. I am considering changing my birth control because last time i was on this brand (loestrin 24) i had a bad water retention problem.. just not this bad.

so if you are on bc, that might be a cause of it.. its not 15lbs of fat.. im assuming a good amount of water weight.

1 lb of muscle = 1 lb of fat

in before posting your diet.

Gaining 15 lbs doesn't come out of nowhere. Go back to your eating plan and take a closer look at your calories...because this is where your problem is.

I've done the exact same thing, and im also on BC and having the same problem of thighs getting bigger, jeans not fitting, etc. I actually started eating ALOT better as well, no junk food, fried food, cut carbs, etc and i dont eat more than 2000 a day, there is no way because i just dont even have enough time between college, work, gym, etc to eat, and when i do its good food, salads, lean meats (chicken, venison, etc), yogurt and shredded wheat cereal in the mornings and i snack on nuts, strawberries. And all i drink is water, i never drink soda. [for the people who were wondering what my diet is] also, it didnt literally "come out of nowhere", its been for about a year, i've been up and down, but it just shot up recently from 118 to 126 so that was the "out of nowhere" part.
Back to the birth control part, @
shortiedancer, i've been on mine since i was 15, im turning 21 this year...so i've been on it for around 6 years, no change in the perscription whatsoever. Im on ortho tricyclen and i like it alot, but i dont know if it could just happen like this after having no problems with it for the past 5 years. I may go to the doctor to see if i can have bloodwork done and check my hormones, the only one i gotta watch is my thyroid since my family has a history of thyroid problems, last time everything was good.

I will also say until I stopped bc and hormones I couldn't get under 115 no matter what I did. I think there is "something" there, not sure what exactly.

You're probably eating more calories than you think...keep a log for a week of everything, sometimes it is surprising!

By the way, FAU grad and fellow South Floridian here...isn't the weather great lately!!!

If you really did gain that weight out of nowhere with no changes to your diet, you should see a doctor.

I think im going to try and see a doctor. I hardly ever eat. I guess I'll count calories but honestly, if anything my diet has gotten better than i've ever had and i eat less and less, so i didnt expect weight gain from that. Like I said, my family has a history of thyroid problems (goiter, sarcoidosis, hypothyroidism, graves disease, etc [4 people on one side of my family have those]) Had levels checked last year and supposedly they were fine but i have other problems that are most likely related to the thyroid as well. If i dont see changes by late April, early May im definitely going to a doctor, if i eat less than i am now I'd be skipping meals and only having a bowl of shredded wheat or a protein shake and maybe a chicken breast in the span of one day. This is really pissing me off

Lol well i originally went on Ortho Tri Cyclen when i was 15 because i had bad acne and had to get off antibiotics since i was on them for 3 years. However, i can't really go off of birth control now lol. It hasnt given me any problems, and im not even sure if thats whats causing this or the thyroid. I've been on it for 6 years now and havent had problems at all until this past year. So confused, and I'm actually hating this weather, its too cold! i miss my summer tan :[

Well see, I used to be between 105-110, but that was before i started working out seriously, which is why i originally asked if that could be why, but i dont think i gained 15+ lbs of muscle. I'm just so used to weighing 105, to be 126 is freaking me out. The picture i have up now of myself was a little less than a year ago, and i do see more muscle in my arms and maybe my back, but thats it. i work the hardest of all on my legs around 3 times a week [hanging deadlifts, squats, lunges, hamstring curls, stairmaster, etc] and thats one workout, along with running in between leg days.
But as far as switching BC, im kinda scared lol. I've been on Ortho Tri Cyclen for soooo long and havent had problems, no scares, it just flat out works lol. If it was guaranteed that the BC is whats causing my weight gain then ya i'd change it, but theres no way to really tell :[
