A co-worker came by my desk and saw me looking at post mortem pics on eBay. He started giving me a hard time as I looked through some of the photos that were listed. Anyway by the time we reached the last page he said something like "you know man those are actually pretty cool". I don't look at the ones of people that are laid out in caskets or on their beds but I do like the ones where the deceased is posed.

Just a brief background of what I know about them. Years ago when someone died people not having a lot of money would have their loved one posed and a picture taken as that was probably the only picture they would ever have of them. Some of the pics are pretty elaborate and have the deceased sitting upright with their loved ones or even standing.

My favorite was of a guy sitting in a chair with I assume his wife sitting on his lap. She was leaning to the side and looked obviously put out by the whole thing. I wish I would have bought it, I think it went for like $9.00. Some of the kid ones will go for hundreds of dollars.

Okay the pictures posted are bizarre even by my standards. This is more what I'm talking about. A lot of pictures I've seen only speculate whether or not the person is dead. I have learned that they try to determine it by unnatural posture, weird looking hands, eyes that aren't right or aren't looking where the group is looking(this one), and often on the standing ones you can see the base of the stand they are attached to.

I don't think it's creepy, actually, but I do think it's weird.

I also think it's interesting that you find it interesting.

Your interest is post-mortem pics, my interest is people who find weird things interesting! So much in common, we have. :)

I find it both wierd and creepy. However, I did a google search and looked at a few pics. The children's pictures are really sad. I guess that the Victorian age people did not get their pictures taken very often, so if a child died before a pic was taken they would still get one done. The current/modenr ones are wierd and for wierdos.

There was this lady whose male and female pet rabbits had just died. So she goes to a taxidermist to preserve them. The taxidermist asks, "would you like them mounted?". Her reply was, "no, just holding hands would be fine.".

I'd rather look at the old pics of loved ones when they were actually living...but if someone loved motorcycles and there were no pics with them on a motorcyle I could see doing that type of action. Now as for purchasing a pic of a dead person...thats too creepy man.

I feel the same way about open casket funerals, and I have been to a few of them. Just can't manage to shake it. I refuse to go up to the casket. I know that it is "to show your respect", however, that is not how I want to remember people.

Totally creepy. Totally. Open casket is one thing, and I understand why people once took pics (and still do in some countries), but I don't want to look at them. Ugh.

Sure, I remember the good stuff but that image always pops up too.

Anyway, I don't think it's uncommon to be fascinated with the dead. It's much akin to rubbernecking.

A corpse is a corpse is a corpse. Burn 'em. Nothing but an empty vessel. I don't see the point in open caskets......or even caskets and burials for that matter. Waste of good land and totaly bad for the enviroment.

Turn 'em into food...............Soiled Green..........it's PEOPLE!!!!

o.k., I'm just kiddin' about the food part:D
totaly serious about the rest.

BTW, I voted interesting, cause I don't understand why people can't grasp that their loved ones are gone and the body isn't anything but bio waste.

Why would anyone want pictures of dead people that they didn't know in real life? I have pics of both my stepdad and my mom from their funerals, not sure why I wanted them at the time but sure as hell wouldn't ever try & sell them on ebay.

Just proves the human race is really phucked up.

As the resident Victorian of the O35, :D , I can tell you that these daguerreotype photos were quite common cherished sentimental pieces to the Victorians, particularly if an infant or child died. Often the post mortem photo was all that the family had to remember the child, so it was a precious keepsake. These photos helped keep the memory of the lost loved one alive. It was a symbol of comfort to the Victorians.

Photo brooches were also very popular from the 1850s to the 1880s, which held very small photos of the deceased, and mourning pins which held ribbons with a lock of hair of a deceased love one.

There is quite a variety of mourning jewellry made popular in the Victorian era. Remember, that Queen Victoria mourned her beloved for 40 years (although jet stones and Stewart crystals date back to the Elizabethan age).

I don't understand it either but I doubt it is sexual in nature. I would imagine collectors find something about the sadness, innocense, and wierdness collectible. Part of the draw too may be wondering what the story behind the photo is, especially when there is more than one deceased pictured. I came across one last night with a husband, wife, and three children with no explanation.

Are they all dead?

I think the lady in the middle/back is dead. I would imagine that some of the disputed ones could be the result of people just looking the wrong way at the time the picture is snapped. If you look at them periodically you'll see common characteristics of the people that are deceased. This pic for example the lady looks obviously different from the group. Her eyes are staring straight ahead in a different direction than everyone else. The rest of the family is nestled in closer than would be normal. Often I think they did this to hide support structures. A lot of times too you'll see parts of support structures, clothing not right, scarves or other objects strategically placed to hide supports. It's odd, but I do find it interesting.

There's an out of print book on amazon called "Sleeping Beauties" going for $850.00 if anyone is interested.:D

That's more phucked up than a soup sandwich.

"No soup for YOU!"

When my wife's grandmother passed on ten years ago, the casket was open, and the dear lady was covered in white lilies. I almost expected her to sit up. A few years later, one of my wife's uncles' mother passed on at the age of 92. We went to the viewing, held a day before the funeral. (It's called an "O-tsuya"). My older son, who was six at the time, asked me why my uncle (in-law's) mother was still sleeping with all the people there.

"Go play with your cousins."

After an hour of talking to our relatives and offering condolences, we passed by the room where the old lady was laid out. My son innocently remarked: "Papa, she's still sleeping."

"Get in the car, Kai."

Son walked away, mumbling to himself...

Before my own mother passed on, she told me: "Whatever you do, remember to slam the lid shut!" So it was ordered, so it was done.

Definitely unusual.

Awhile back, when I got into defending physicians in medical malpractice cases, a physician friend of mine hooked me up to view an autopsy. That was weird as hell and utterly fascinating at the same time. Beyond the sights and sounds (yes, there were some sounds), the smells definitely stayed in my memory.
