After ingestion, are some grams absorbed each hour until all x amount of grams are absorbed or is there no absorption whatsoever for a few hours after which point all x amount of grams are absorbed? Also, considering the answer to this question in addition to the fact that casein is "anti-catabolic", should it be used as part of a post-workout meal? I really appreciate any knowledgeable input- thanks in advance!

It doesn't just hit you all at once after several hours in the gut. Your body gets to work digesting it immediately, but because it tends to become gel like in the stomach, there release of amino's is drawn out over a period of 4-6 hours.

It's great to take right before bed, when your body will be without a food source for an extended period of time. I usually mix a little whey with my before bed casein shake.

The big thing to focus on for post workout is whey and some carbs.

^^when it gets in your stomach, it (supposedly) reacts with the stomach acid and clumps together and slowly digests a little at a time. So before bed is primetime for casein. Also i'll make a shake in the morning sometimes if I know I wont be able to eat for a while. Post workout= whey but some protein blends have casein now (syntha6 and MHPs 12 hour muscle feeder come to mind). it's just a slow digesting protein so do whatever you want with it.

Yeah, I use Dymatize Elite Gourmet and it is a Casein blend as well.

I have been using Casein before bed for awhile now. The best part I find is not waking up in the middle of the night STARVING!!! I have heard that taking fish oil helps slow the digestion further, but I am not sure of the validity of this.

Im pretty sure there have been no study's that show casein provides elevated aminos in plasma for 4-6 hours.

Does anyone have any specific sources saying casein/Cottage cheese has a 6+ hour digestion time (other than a bb website)?
The only values I have found are identical to this

Which would see to suggest LF cottage cheese has a 90min digestion and only hard fat cheese is 4-5 hours. Meanwhile meat ranged fro 1.5-5 as well.

Just questioning how much of the casein effect is propaganda to sell more expensive supps and how much is reality. Or would we better off just eating meats?

Muscle protein synthesis will peak in about 3 hours. Though the blood amino acid might still be elevated for 4-5 hours muscle protein synthesis goes down. Casein is not a Superior protein source in that mater that everyone thinks. All the studies that have been done were full body protein synthesis.

Lyle’s summary: The researchers found the following: whey spiked blood amino acid levels faster than casein, but blood amino acid levels dropped more quickly as well. Casein, in contrast, took much longer to digest, actually providing amino acids for around 8 hours to the body (you might consider that data point the next time you hear that you have to eat every three hours or your muscles will fall off.

Both casein and whey hit the bloodstream at about the same time (about an hour in), that is, whey didn’t actually get into the system faster. However, whey spiked blood amino acid levels higher at that one hour point.

I have chicken and fish oil before bed; works great too!

What I've been doing lately before bed is a half cup of cottage cheese with added cinnamon to make it bearable and ~24g whey with 1g fish oil. Together that equals ~37g protein. Anyone else eating cottage cheese before bed? If so, how much? I'm wondering if I'm getting enough...
