Just who do you love to listen to.

Slash is a spectacular guitar talent IMO! Not just 80's flash, the guy has great soul in his playing. He's one of those players that you can feel the emotion, not just the sonic blast!!

^^^ that Slash + Fergie song is SO ****ing awesome!
this is one of my all time favourite songs with one of my all time favourite solos, from one of my all time favourite guitarists, Mr Roy Z
It's quite simple and not at all difficult to play... but it's just..... NICE

A lot of great guitar players out there not sure I can name a favorite, depends on my mood what I feel like lisrening to. But Satriani is amazing when you have time to listen and just get into the music.

Funny, I remember reading an interview with Gene Simmons (no I didn't get those fifteen minutes back) where he said Jimmy Page was over rated. Gene Simmons judging Jimmy Page, how ridiculous is that?

I cannot even respond to that. Serious, I have typed 4 responses and deleated them.
I consider Jimmy Page to be a nearly godlike (small g) figure.

True story
When my youngest daughter was around 5 years old, my whole family played Everquest. One day I was watching "The Song Remains the Same" during a really long corpse run and Ashley walked in, looked at Jimmy Page on the TV and asked who he was. When I told her she said...
"Is Jimmy Page a wizard?"
I said,
"Yes, hunny. Yes he is"
She is 12 now and has a Zep poster on her wall. I must be a good father.

This thread interests me ;) I've been playing for over 20 years. The five players that have most influenced they way I play...
Eddie Van Halen
Jimi Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Angus Young
Slash
There are too many to mention...that's just the five whose tecnique comes through the most in my playing style.

No disrespect to Miss Lisa or Brian, but I would rather listen to cats fornicating than listen to either Steve Via or Joe Satriani.
I agree that they are both extremely skilled at guitar. But if either of them has a soul, I have never heard it.

That is why I prefer guys like Slash, Stevie Ray, Gary Moore, you feel the emotion in their playing. I agree with you on Vai, Satch though a technical fiend can also play very emotionally. I love Surfing with Aliens, Satch Boogie, and Crowd Chant.
A guy who I simply cannot get is yinwee (spelled wrong I know, but i'm hooked on phonics) Malmsteem (spelled wrong again?). I love Ritchie Blackmore's playing and he is supposed to be his biggest influence, but I don't hear it.

One time when me and my wife had been drinking we played the "Who would you do game". She said Bon Scott, Mickey Rourke, and Lemmy.
I kinda understood.
Anyway, to hell with Vai, Johnson, and Malmsteen. Here is real guitar.

Satriani, as technical as he can be, can also play with feel. The stuff he did with Sammy Hagar in ChickenFoot.. he sounded nothing like any of his other recordings. I like some of Satch and Vai's stuff..but neither of them had any impact whatsoever on my playing. Later in life I stumbled upon Warren Haynes. Now that fat man can play. He has the chops and a tone that can't be beat.

I only heard it once when my bass player pal brought over and played it during a jam session. It was just four bar blues rock. It sounded more like Van Halen than any Satch recordings. How do you embed a video?

lol I have the Satch mask from the supercolossal concert; it's hanging in my office at work. Saw him at the Warfield. Eric Johnson opened. It was a great show - he played with his teeth, and behind his head - all the cool stuff.
One of the attorneys at work took guitar lessons from him (he's a local boy, or at least he was). She said he was a real perfectionist, very strict, no nonsense kind of guy.

agree re: satriani.
he can play very technically but is always very melodic and soulful IMO, although to be honest I lost interest in his music and moved on to other things some time after the flying in a blue dream album.
Yngwie gets a bad rap too IMO. Although he does kinda keep writing the same song over and over again lately.

Fantastically skillful. The Man is a master, maybe one of the most technically proficient guitar players I have ever heard.
I just cant stand to listen to it. It reminds me very much of the sound of cats fornicating.
Dead serious.
I find it utterly soulless.

yeah look i don't want to overstate it because yngwie again is one of those guys i got into briefly, still drag out an album on occasional but never really became a HUGE fan like I am with a lot of other stuff.
these days i've sort of gotten over all the prog and shred stuff and I just want to listen to something that rocks and has a catchy chorus, you know? but you know how people will talk about a blues player and say "he doesn't play a lot of notes, but the notes he does play!" ? I sorta feel that way about Yngwie (that song i posted in particular) only in reverse. He packs a ****load of notes in there but they're all the right notes, to my ears.
Also seriously envy his vibrato and the in-tune-ness of his bends. He's known for speed but his vibrato and bends are as good as anyone IMO.
I'd rather listen to some Paramore these days though :) those kids rock.

Timeless, and just about soul perfection! When one artist can take the stage alone and fill any venue, that is talent! There is a Cuban, Pablo Milanes, who has filled stadiums in Latin America, sitting alone on a stool with his guitar and his voice, nothing more. I don't like fireworks, light shows or dancers. There aren't many who are capable of that. When they do come around, they just about take your breath away. Music is a powerful thing.
