My mum keeps saying that she wants to lose a few kilos to look a little better this summer but she seems to say this all year round so I was just wondering if there was a way that she could lose some weight by training just before bed each night (as she works all day).

Currently she's doing some situps by using something like this: http://www.acasports.co.uk/images/products/full/marcy_sit_up_bench.jpg and she's trying to eat a little better.

But I have some old dumbells (20kg set) that I can give to her and I was thinking some calf raises (she wants to tone her legs) and something like tricep extensions to lose her tuckshop arms lol, but I don't know where to start and if it's even worth it.

Any feedback would be great.

Why not let her read through the stickies in the nutrition section first so she can work out her calories and macros, all fat loss starts with diet. I'd also help her set up a profile on here so she can do research herself.

As for working out, is a gym membership in your budget as a present? Perhaps a copy of New Rules of Lifting For Women to along with it?

If she wants to work out at home then maybe help her work out a full body program with body weight exercises as well as the things she has available now while she builds up her fitness equipment.

There's no such thing as toning.

Calf raises, tricep extensions and situps won't do anything.

Weight loss = a caloric deficit.

Whether that comes from cardiovascular exercise or from learning a bit of self control and eating less doesn't matter.

She doesn't even have to train, simply eating less will result in weight loss.

Millions of people want to lose weight and will start tomorrow, which is the reason why countries like Australia and America are full of fatties.

It never ceases to amaze me that given the choice between leading a crappy, unhealthy life with a high risk for serious health issues and simply putting the damn back on the plate, people still trick, lie and make excuses to themselves and take the first option.

Edit: Harsh post, I'm sorry.

Weight loss is simple, commiting to it can be more difficult. You can support and encourage your mum, but that's it. Whether she gets the results or not is 100% on her plate (literally.)
