View Full Version : What do you think about Aerosmith?

Love them or hate?
I'm curious.
I really think they are one of the most over-rated bands ever. Most of their popular songs I just find annoying.
They still get a lot of airplay though.
And a lot of their fans are fiercely supportive.

I have seen them through the years of change. The most recent which was quite some time ago was with Kid Rock and Run DMC I still think they put on a great show :)

this is where I was but I leaned toward the awesome vote because:
They have had great longevity, they were a prolific in there ability to create hits,
Some of there early work is very influential on many later artists in the 80s and 90s.
Someone as ugly as Steven Tyler has to be extremely talented to be as popular as he is (true for the whole band actually)
I like the band, but I know folks who looove them, some of them are only in their early 20's also.
Its like the John Lennon thread a couple months ago,
IMO you dont have to personally appreciate a band to acknowledge their influence.

Same here. I loved them as a kid/young man. I still like them, but not even close to my preferred music these days.
I did see them with Skid Row (in Virginia) back in the 80s. Was a fun show. :)

They're an original band, with signature vocals and great guitar work.
The first four albums are, imo, fantastic works:
Self Titled
Get Your Wings
Rocks
Toys in the Attic
Everything after these ^ isn't the same sound, yet obviously, appeals to a large and even different generation/audience.
Hell, Aerosmith's ability to overcome bad drug habits, a huge lull in their career, and then..... sign a reported $30 million dollar "blind" deal with Sony in the early 90's...and then actually make Sony money on the deal? Pfft! I may not love the newer sound, but I've got nothing but respect for these guys, and I still really love the early works. Like most bands, I like most of stuff that you never hear played on the radio.
Everything after that was crap though. :)

Curse you for making me agree with you on something. Songs such as Love in an Elevator and Jamie's Got A Gun make me want to stick a hot poker in my ear. Why can't they be like 80's Heart, i.e. so much better than their 70's work? :(

I saw them twice in the 70's, and on one of those occasions, Tyler almost castrated himself on the mike stand while straddling it (srs). It was very apparent that he hurt himself...and that he was totally wasted :). The 70's.......... :D

The Metallica thread was more of stupid rant.
This thread I was honestly interested, because it came up last night in convo.
Neighbor Bill had his new gurl over and Aerosmith came on and I went into a mini rant about how much they suck, and she sat there silently and listened to me, then when I was done she said "I love Aerosmith".
:o
So then we had a little convo about it.
Was interested to see what a group of people my age felt about them.

Your age, eh? :). It's funny to see how the different age groups (among US) respond to certain music groups. There are huge differences (often) in taste between just 5yrs apart in age.
Obviously, not always, but usually.

Aerosmith is my favorite band. I really like the first 4 albums the most, but will listen to any of them. Been to at least one of their concerts every U.S. tour since the 84 Back in the Saddle tour when I was 13. Me and the wife went to the concert in Tampa and the one in Sunrise a few days later earlier this year. Met Joe Perry at a gas station in Gainesville when we were on our way to Tampa. We pulled in to get gas and I looked over to the side and there was his bus. A few seconds later, Joe steps out. We went over and asked him for a pic. He was very friendly and spent about 15 minutes taking pics with us and talking about my other passion, guitars.

Neil+Bob+Arlo+Joni would not equal Ringo Starr, to me ("City Of New Orleans" was Arlo's seminal work, IMHO; I used to perfirm it at coffee houses @college). As far as Aerosmith, when I was growing up, you were either an Aerosmith fan or a Kiss fan. I was not an Aerosmith fan. Although, the previously mentioned Aerosmith albums (Aerosmith, Rocks, Dream On, and Toys In The Attic) are in my collection.

The lead singer looks rather like an aged 'rodent' of some kind. I know that reflects not in the least on their artistic endeavor over the years! LOL There are a couple of songs that have good rhythm. I wouldn't pay 5 bucks to see them in concert. But then again, I wouldn't pay the same to walk across the street to see any politician, or otherwise 'famous' individual. I like to have a seat, a table, and some alcohol served in a timely manner when I go out for a 'night on the town.' My time and comfort is valuable, LMAO at least to me!

Meatloaf was the worst. Hardly sang at all and when he did he was out of tune and couldn't hit any high notes.

The National Anthem is not an easy to song to sing, that's for sure, but that rendition was pretty pathetic! There was an artist in Mexico several years ago who fumbled and forgot some words to their national anthem at some venue or another, the dude was fined!!! I can sympathize with him, the Mexican National Anthem has like 37 verses!!! LOL It's an epic.

back in the early 80's when the record companys concentrated on selling those chessy vids to appeal to 14 year olds, the people who were basically the roots of the bands success lost interest because rock n roll was now being presented in a Ed Sullivan type fashion....

I'll take **** for this, but honestly? I didn't see it as all that bad...for what it was. I mean, folks, have you all lost perspective that in fact, almost all of your favorite rock singers would not fare much better than Tyler did here? I'm dead fcking serious.
Not only is the song hard to sing for "singing pros" (this usually doesn't include rock singers!). Singing to the beat of a drummer, guitarist...is much different than standing there with no equipment, no filters, no beat...nothing! When I was young I could sing pretty decent...when singing WITH selected material that was at the RIGHT attenuation. By myself? I couldn't carry 5 words of a song without embarrassing myself :D.
Further, Steve Walsh (of Kansas) sang at a friend's sister's wedding back around 81'. OMG...it was embarrassing as hell (to me, anyway). It was horrible! Live, in a church..and yes, he had two Kansas guys playing flute and violin with him...but it was horrible!
I'm just sayin'......most rock singers aren't Aretha Franklins or (insert anyone with REAL vocal prowess here). Most people forget.....or just don't realize this. And Tyler is over freaking 60! Cut the guy some slack, I say :p ;)

I think you are right about this...I've heard several rock singers mangle this song badly. I remember hearing Sheryl Crow really f'cking it up (missed several of the notes and off key in places). For what Tyler sings, he does incredibly well. I remember hearing an interview with Tyler once, and he seemed surprised that people found "dream on" to be a very hard song to sing. He said that he found it to be one of the easiest ones (for him) to do. For his style of music, there are few vocalists that can match him IMO.

I really don't have a dog in this fight, as they say. But it is what it is. Most rock singers just can't actually sing....without backing. There are of course, exceptions, but few and far between. And this goes back to what I've preached about the ability of most people to not only recognize, but compartmentalize...if you will...actual musical talent. This is why I stated just last night, in an old thread of mine, that I appreciate someone like Roberta Flack as much as I do, say, Robert Plant...or whoever. It's all about perspective. It's always about perspective. Younger generations seem incapable of grasping this concept.
And to be a name dropper..or whatever you'd call it, LOFL....my oldest sister's best friend dated Brad Whitford (bass player for Aerosmith), and they also played at my "small town" HS before they were famous, and before I moved to Atlanta. They'd done many recordings and were about to give up...totally...if the self-titled album didn't take off. I'm grateful that it did, with the hit Dream on....which still didn't even really reach the rest of the U.S and further for a couple of years!

That is one beautiful song! I have enormous respect for any artist with the incredible control of range, emotion and tone that it takes to truly sing well. Bette Midler has sung a song or two that are amazing as well. "The Wind Beneath My Wings" comes to mind.

I waited for years for Aerosmith to come to the U.K.
Just after the tour was announced there was the falling of stage incident, then the reported split of the band while Tyler was in rehab for his "ankle injury"
People were saying Tyler had lost it for good, the tour would be cancelled ect...........
Now I can only comment on the show I went to in London but Tyler was note perfect all night and had the sell out crowd in the palm of his hands.

I reserve the term they totally suck for britney spears, lady gaga...etc

The 1st 3 albums & Live Bootleg are really good; "Rocks" is an excellent. overlooked arena rock LP. For the approx 35 years since then = CRAPOLA!!!!

Some of their stuff I really like. "Walk This Way", "Angel", and a couple more fit this category. Some of the rest I kinda have to be in the mood to listen to.
