I run xc and for the first time ever, i have gotten nasty shin splints. my coach let me pull a diva and for the past two weeks i have been only running in meets to preserve my legs. Is it OK to keep just running in the meets and pop a couple pain killers before a race or should I shut it down all together so it doesnt get worse?

Stretching, massaging, and ice helps out a lot.

I used to get shin splints bad. They're painful. Seems like they go away with time. I find running barefoot to the most comfortable. I got a pair of Vibrams Five Fingers and they're extremely comfortable for me. When I run in shoes I find I land a little too heavily on my heel, with these its just like being barefoot. Dunno if that helps at all...

What are you running? Track meets? Cross country?

You need to focus in some direct training for your tibialis anterior. Most likely the ta is lengthened and weakened compared to your plantarflexors.
