Future of the Fitness Industry: Roundtable

The following roundtable features Alan Aragon, James Krieger, Liam “Taku” Bauer, Jamie Hale, and Will Noble.

W Noble: What would you describe as your primary reason for being in the Fitness industry, and What do you enjoy most about it?

J Hale: I love physical activity, and I have been participating in physical activities for most of my life. I have been working in the fitness industry my entire adult life. My earliest memories of working in the industry include training college students in their dorms, and designing nutrition programs for boxers cutting weight. The thing I enjoy most about working in the industry is reading, discussing and analyzing exercise and nutrition research. Currently, most of my work is in the areas of writing, lecturing and designing nutrition regimens….

The future of the fitness industry is a pus$ified atmosphere with no dumbells heavier than 85lbs so people don't feel like they're being intimidated or judged. Working out hard will not be allowed or your membership will be suspended.

I'm pretty sure the guy is speaking of personal fitness training, not how high weights go in a gym.

Hopefully the future is gyms offering hourly pay(not this commission, pay when you train bs), and health benefits just like any other company. Clock in at 9 go home at 5, get paid for 8 hrs pay client or no client.

They would pay all their trainers minimum wage, no commission, and have all part timers, to evade workers comp and benefits. It would be like having a desk job. Go in, sit down and collect a paycheck every 2 weeks, just for showing up.

Gyms are built for the average joe, common housewife, just the norm, who make up the majority of their business. Gyms would go out of business, if they were built for purely powerlifting, bodybuilding, heavy intimidating weights.

There is a big difference in how much money is being made, when you compare a 24hr fitness against a smaller powerlifting gym consisting of olympic lifts, and heavy weights. Both attract different members.

Yes but it doesn't have to be a powerlifting gym or a sissy gym. Why can't a powerlifter and a fitness jane train at a 24hour or a golds gym?

Any powerlifter and a fitness jane can train at any big box gym in the world. Just don't expect them to have certain pieces of equipment and heavier weights, that the norm will never use, and there might be certain rules pertaining to heavier weights, and olympic lifts. Big box gyms don't market to future mr olympias and the worlds strongest man, but they'll complain about not having certain equipment, not any heavy weights, and told to to not grunt amongst other things, that disrupt the sedentary gym goer

A lot of big box gyms are getting worse and worse. I can no longer deadlift at the golds gym I go to. Not only powerlifters deadlift. Fitness joe and jane would benefit greatly from it. The golds gym also got rid of all the power racks in their remodel. Why are some gyms now only going up to 85lbs on the db's? To keep the dedicated gym goer away and cater to the people that sign up but come a couple times a month. I don't expect a big box gym to have a GHR and a bunch of specialty bars. I do expect them to allow me to workout hard. It's a sad sad thing happening in the industry.

I see it as an opening for gyms that do cater to athletes/pl'ers/strongman ect to start expanding. What I wouldnt give to have a defranco type gym open up in my area... it would literally explode with clients imo... All we have are 2 metroflex gyms and 1 powerlifting gym in the whole city.

My LA fitness only has 1 power rack and a million squat/leg press machines and an entire floor dedicated to cardio machines. I honestly cant wait to start building my garage gym
