Does it still have a huge crowd?

Anyone actually play it?

Army?

Pics of Army?

Trying to understand the points system and basically all the ****ing rules. Had a Tau fire squad but never fully got into it

Maybe this can be the Official WH40k thread?

I played for a short while when I was younger. I used space marines. Although I kind of enjoyed playing, I quit because it was expensive, I had no one to play against, and I didn't want to be associated with the hardcore nerd stereotype this brings.

I have a lot of 40k stuff but I haven't played in a long time. Too busy, but if you know enough people who play it can be a really fun hobby that offers things you don't get from video games/sports. Yeah it's nerdy as hell.

The points system is the company's attempt at balancing the many army rosters against one another. Basically a **** infantry= 5 pts, elite infantry = 15 pts, tanks = 100+ pts, etc.

So you can either build up a horde army (orks, tyranids, guard) with tons of units or a small elite army (deathwing, eldar, grey knights) with under 30 models in it.

I worked at a hobby shop for a good 6 months so I feel I can answer this question for you.

As far as the following it still brings a decite crowd, although most will be either teenagers or full grown adults, there really isnt a huge in between.

My hobby shop held weekend battles that was free for all to play, we had our own custom terrain for them to use and they could bring debris, trees ect...to add to the challenge. We averaged about 10 players every saturday. The huge thing that turned me off to getting into it was how weird these guys were...we're talking super nerd wtf kinda wierd. i have seen alot of normal guys at other stores but the ones that came to ours must have been the cream of the super wierd crop.

Although you dont have to play the game to like the hobby, I know a guy that came in weekly who is on the Dallas Swat team and he just likes to build and paint battle scenes with them...its just one of those things that he likes to do. He has no interest in the tabletop side of things at all. You can make the models pretty creative and some of the paint jobs I have seen were outstanding.

I think if I had some normal friends who wanted to play it I would have gotten into it but there are alot better hobbies out there that you can get a little bit more of a return on and since Games workshop holds all the rights to 40k they can charge whatever they want for their units. I bought a Necron Battleforce only because I could get it for 40$ which normally sold for 100$

I myself am into RC hobby style airplanes/Helicopters...I have a ton of friends that are into RC cars and we have 2-3 tracks around town that you can take to race other people on...great thing with hobby RC is the ability to upgrade/tune your own cars/planes/helicopters to your liking much like to a life like model.

Warhammer is combining chess with building models, Atleast that's the way I see it. I'll see if I can find a shop around me that hosts certain day for matches. Get my ass beat by the "nerds"

i used to think this was cool as hell when i was younger, like 11-12 but obviously didnt have any real finance therefore never even got off the ground

**** this thread kinda making me want to buy some and paint (poorly)

how much we looking at to buy all the paints and ****, just to get started? im not looking at this in any serious capacity but like i said it still holds some interest for me

I was in the same situation as you.

Do we have to paint them to play?

We had a call for a person feeling ill that needed transport to the hospital. When we walked in, The guy had a few space marines(As decorations I guess) which I automatically recognized. I was talking to him about the space marines while taking his vitals and en route to the hospital. Said he has a huge space marine army and another army in his house.

So all of that started me on Warhammer and lead to this thread.

-Cool story brah.

I wish the PC game they made was the same as Starcraft.

Those seem for the best type of paint job, I'm sure you can either find a cheaper way or find those tools USED.

starter set w/starting paints, brushes ect will cost you upwards of 100$+ depending on what you want to do, and what color schemes you want your army to be.

You dont have to paint them but they do come unpainted and just a bland grey color. Most units you also have to assemble yourself just like a real model. They are usually snap together pieces that you will have to glue at the bases so they dont fall apart. Then you just paint it from there.

I would say the assembly, painting and collection of the units would be more so the hobby then the actual gameplay. The majority of your time will be spent building and painting units rather then actually playing the game.

Some of the units and battlefields people make are pretty sick though and makes me wish I got into it. like the below.

Do they have a "Superbowl" type of thing for the best players? I would go for the LULz

-What's the rule for setting your troops up on the table? Can I set them any place or do you have a mid line that you can't cross?

Rofl. What a lad.

I used to play around 10+ years ago maybe? Was chaos space marines in 40k (and Dwarfs or sometimes lizardmen in warhammer). Hardly ever gamed, perhaps 3 times ever. Was totally into painting, in fact, I remember painting the great unclean one on the day of Princess Dianas funeral (which was apparently in 1997!) so has been a fair while since I was involved.

Was totally into modding things as well, fitted into chaos pretty well. Built claws out of clay and stuck them on to tanks, stuck some titan guy (from that game where normal guys are tiny) onto a chaos bike. About a month ago went onto the 40k history site thing. Where it basically has the history of the 40k universe. Chaos worlds are good reads, would like to see a film made based on warhammer but doubt it could be done well...

...bought a Necron battleforce 2 weeks ago...friend bought/buying the Tyranid battleforce (he bought some side warriors up until now)

I decided to nerd it up since I wasn't playing any rec. sports for the fall season.

Current Necron army:

28 warriors
3 destroyers
7 scarab swarms
1 destroyer lord

I want to add in some wraiths/pariahs but I'm waiting to buy that on eBay or until I get into it more (if I do). Right now I only want to dick around with 500-750 point battles. I should have played Eldar though...

I plan on going to a hobby store and looking at what I can do about my Tau army, I just don't think they have a store that's mostly about Warhammer but just a general hobby store.

The stores keep popping up all over around here. I can think of three actual Games-Workshop within a fifteen minute drive.

Amazon / eBay are good ways to buy new bits / sell old stuff as well. Just as an fyi.

I saw a site with that showed the specific skills used in painting these things, Once I get a chance, I'm going to try my best to make the paint scheme the best.
