View Full Version : deadlifting 3 x a week
So bill starr 5x5 has you squatting 3 x a week and ripptoes twice a week ?
Now because I cant squat would it be worth it to add in the deadlift 2 or 3 times a week into my program ?
Deadlifts work your lower back and your legs so am I mite as well do it unless there is some reason why I shouldn't ?

Sure. You just have to be intelligent about your approach. I've done dadlifts five times per week, but it was a specific progressive-loading program.
Just be smart about it.
Well I am trying to get strong so I was thinking of just adding it in twice and one day stiff deads

You can do DLs 3x a week, but like Marius stated, be smart.
I did a 3x3 program for a while, dls,squats,and bench 3x a week. Kicked my arse;)
Just be smart, "listen" to your body.
Well this is my workout
sunday
power clean 3x5 (learning this so it wont be heavy for a few weeks)
dead lift 5x5
pull-ups 3x as many as I can do in 2mins 1 min rest
Monday
off
Tue
step ups 5x10
stiff deads 5x10
farmers walks 1mins x 3 with 1 min rest (will be using plates)
body weight squats and half lunges
wed
cardio
thursday
bench 5x5
Barbell rows 5x5
mill press 5x5
friday
accessory work and body weight exercises and cardio
sat
off
So am going to add in deads at the end of Thursdays workout.
DO you think its worth adding anything else in ? maybe do rows twice a week like on bill stars ?(am already thinking of changing it to Pendlay Rows
btw this week is just making sure I know all my 5rep maxs thats why I want to see if I can make some changes now if not now then its getting kept that way for at least the next 10 weeks

i would add squats and spit your thursday into wen and friday but i am pretty new to this myself.

If you're referring to Rip's Starting Strength, you squat 3x/week on it, not 2.
Workout A: Squat, Bench, Deadlift
Workout B: Squat, Press, Power Clean
So a two-week cycle is:

but am not because my phisyo therapist has told me to try and do them without weight and it still hurts when I do them this way.the same as its hurting my knee because am sitting up properly at the computer desk.

Actually, I have seen Rip prescribe this very thing on a short term basis for someone who can't squat.
In Rip's gym, you have to have a damn good certifiable reason why you can't squat, though. In fact, Rip has to agree that you can't squat or you get called a pussy.

I tore the inside of my rectum twice from squatting...wonder if that would qualify as an acceptable reason? :)

Personally, when I have done 5x5 with all the squatting that goes on I tend to deadlift heavy once per week - but as Marisu said it is possible if you are smart about it
