Is there anything this could of been other than some kind of extra-terrestrial technology?
Blows my mind.

Like they said, it was an unknown phenomenon, Not of natural origin (from limited human knowledge) What makes it so fascinating, Other then the fact that it was a radio signal... Is that they have tried to listen for it in the same spot and never heard it again. I was watching a program about it on nat geo and one of the professor's speculated that it could have been two alien ships communicating with each other...it really is something amazing to just think about.

It was also some hundred lightyears away so technically we heard it (I believe) 200 years after it was sent.

It couldve been.....
But solar flares give off radio and electromagnetic radiation too.
Did anyone see that video in the misc of some guys findings when a solar flare interrupted his transmissions? Freaked me out srsly

Yeah that would just be crazy if it was two ships communicating, from what i've read it was described as being from a point source of intense focus and 30 times louder than the background noise of space which would resemble something like an antenna being pointed directly at earth for a brief moment of time. Pretty annoying that we werent able to record it again though, either the signal must of been turned off or pointed in a different direction to which earth is in or something (presuming it was technological in origin)

It's mind blowing to think that some advanced intelligence could of sent that 200 years ago and has probably become even more advanced than it was.. or perhaps even died out?
Apparently we've been sending signals out into space for just over 100 years now so it will still take another 100 years for any of our signals to reach roughly the same spot that the WOW! signal came from.
..Brb searching the universe for life and waiting 300 years for a reply.

Oh yeah could be, i would of thought they would of ruled that out though surely?
I know radio emissions from planets themselves have been ruled out but whether that would include solar flares as well i'm not too sure.
Whats been ruled out so far: Planets, Astroids, Satellites, Aircraft, Human spacecraft, Ground-Based Transmitters, and the effects of gravitational Lensing & Interstellar Scintillation.
..n link to vid by any chance?, sounds interesting.

dude its srsly just creepy
a guy was monitoring air traffic from some backyard setup
gets interrupted by a solar flare
he converts the radiowaves into geometric images
they look liek some wierd head mouthing words?
honestly wtf

picture to give distance an idea.
so this signal was "right place right time to hear a message between two ships."
so dose that mean if we moved our "big ear" to the left or right a cm or two we could have fallowed the message? (Granted we moved in the right direction)

Doesnt the fact we havent recorded it again improve the odds of it being something cool?
Whatever made it is obviously mobile......but a natural body wouldnt move away at a speed making it impossible for us to pick it up again.

I don't even have to know where it was coming from to tell you it wasn't 200 years old, that would be extremely close for space.

IIRC, they believe it was an odd signal from some sort of quasar.

I think it's in one of the Cosmos videos.. Not sure which. If you haven't checked out Carl Sagan's Cosmos you should download it, I thought it was great.

Could it have been aliens communicating? very possible.
Could it have been a natural phenomenon we haven't discovered yet? also very possible.
Honestly I don't believe we will pick up any communications of aliens. You think an advanced alien civilization who can travel the stars would still be using radio signals to communicate?
Doesn't seam very likely.

They would have been centuries or millenia ago.

Ahh I didn't think about that. Good point.
The wow signal which was from the past could be an old signal.

What else would they use? Unless they found a way to bypass the laws of physics and transmit information faster than the speed of light, they'd probably continue to use electromagnetic waves.

Who said they were traveling through the stars? What if they were only a few hundred years ahead of us?(technologically speaking) They could have just been be two ships in their own solar system(don't know why you think they would be traveling around the stars or super advanced). You are quick to forget that we to have space ships as well.

Advanced life would probably communicate through some form of quantum entanglement. So it would be instantaneous regardless of distance.

Explain? I thought nothing could travel faster than light, including information.
The only thing I've seen that might violate this entangled photon pairs, which seems to be what you're talking about. But I have no idea how it works.
