Anyone interested in being an astronaut? (besides me)

I'm obsessed with flight, space, physics, and rocketry.
I'll be studying Aerospace Engineering at PSU with a minor in Spanish.

I need some flight training, but it's nothing I can't handle.

My goal is to be apart of the manned mission to Mars in 2031.

Anyone else?

Sounds like you're reaching for the stars.

Most astronauts are people that have PhD's in Physics Engineering or Math. you may have to go into one of those fields.

I really hope I have the opportunity to leave the earths orbit before I die.....

It just seems so far-fetched to shoot for such a goal I guess that is why noone really looks into it. Physics has never been my forte. I remember we dabbled into a bit of rocket science and there's just so much to remember........but oddly enough it doesn't seem terribly difficult. Of course i'm sure we just grazed the surface.

One of my dad's friends from college ended up being a payload specialist aboard the shuttle, he had a mechanical engineering degree.

I'm obsessed with rockets lmao I used to build them all the time, multistaged, crazy things.

I figured if I would pick a job, it would be something that I would love, and that no one on earth could do, no matter how much money they had.

You have a billion dollars? well, I flew into space last week...

If you aren't joking, then i'm with you.

I'm currently getting a Ph.D in Physical Oceanography and hope one day to distinguish myself enough that I have a chance.

My advisor was selected as an Astronaut candidate but he had one irregular heartbeat. That was enough for them to tell him that he was no longer a candidate.

wow I'd be pissed.

I don't even care if I didn't go into space, just being a part of NASA would be a blast.

Supposedly the government is cutting funding to NASA though, so I'm not sure what's going to happen. Neil and Buzz were PISSED. Might have to go to Russia and be apart of their program...

If you want it bad enough, you can get there. How long does it take to get a Ph.D? 6 or 8 years?

Not being an astronaut but my goal is to work on the team that sends the folk to mars!

(maths part of it...)

Gov't is cutting funding to stuff that is not really worth investing in right now.. i.e. space travel.

Almost all their money now is going towards robotics and satellites. They also do a lot of ocean research.

Ph.D can take 4 to 6 years+ depending on how much you know and how dedicated you are to getting it done quicker.

A woman Astronaut graduated from the college I attend. Believe her major was an engineering field also. School has a lot to do with NASA and some NASA workers are professors as in my class now, my professor works for NASA. Seems pretty neat.

Most astronauts are actually pilots from the US Military.

like 4 years on top of an undergrad?

I guess ocean research would be important, isn't there a statistic that says we don't know 70% of our oceans? lol
