what are people's opinions on buying macbooks if you can get them at a high discounted rate (i.e. 50%) if you want to use it for gaming purposes. If you could connect it to a monitor would you say it would be a good device for the higher end computer games coming out soon.

They're not really built for gaming and not all games work well in Bootcamp.

They have very low-end graphics cards so they won't perform well in games. Ideally you shouldn't get a laptop for gaming but if you do look at something like a Asus G series laptop or a Dell XPS.

Okay guys, figured most of it out :)
Case:
Antec One Hundred
Mobo:
Asrock P67 Extreme4
CPU:
i5-2500K - Currently with stock cooler to see how hot it runs, I can always add an aftermarket cooler later on..
GPU:
Sapphire HD6950 Dirt3 Edition
PSU:
???
RAM:
G.Skill Ripjaws X F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL (1600 mhz, CPU is 1333mhz standard, but can be OC'd..)
Harde schijf
Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ, 1TB + current 250GB disk for media storage
SSD:
Crucial m4 CT064M4SSD2 64GB (for OS+some games)
Now, I just need to figure out what PSU to take.. I'm not really looking forward to spending money each year to upgrade my system to the newest standards, so I'll live with less than best performance, but perhaps I'll want to crossfire my GPU in the future, I'm not sure.. To do that I'll need a future proof PSU (aka. more wattage) - what do you guys recommend?

Go for a good 750W PSU and you'll be fine to crossfire that card in the future. I recommend something like the Corsair TX750, Silverstone Strider + 750, OCZ Fatal1ty Series 750W, Seasonic X-760 80Plus Gold 760W or Enermax 750W Modular. They are more pricey than the other PSUs on the market but for good reason. They are made with better quality capacitors and will not only last longer but are much less likely to fry your components if you do crossfire and get close to the limit.

I would go with the HX series over the TX series just because it is semi-modular. If you don't care about airflow or cable organization, then go with the TX.
Hi guys im getting ready to finalize my componenets just wondering if you any of you have any thoughts on some of the things im choosing.
i5 2500k - im guessing thats fine
MSI P67 -GD55 - now this is one that im not to sure about its pretty much the most i want to spend on a MOBO and im pretty sure it supports SLI and RAM that i'll be choosing ( Corsair Vengeance 2x2gb) but as this is my first build im not to sure how good it is , i was swayed by the easy 1 button OC and the Military class parts thinking atleast it will last awhile also the UEFI Bios maybe a little easier to use for a novice to OC , but are their any other boards that maybe better for the same price?
Cooler master GX650 PSU - i think it will be ok to run a 560 ti and my CPU only going to have one hard drive as i can't afford SSD just yet if i were to run SLI i think i'd get a higher PSU , just wondering if i could OC my cpu a little say to 4.0ghz and still be ok with this psu?
Case Cooler master CM690 ii lite - comes with the psu and seems to have good reviews i'll be adding two more 120mm fans for extra cooling
Samsung 1tb spinpoint 7200rpm hdd - can't afford SSD but will be adding one prob after december.
looking at the Asus GTX 560 Ti Direct CUii 830 mhz anyone got one? or had any problems before?
Also Headsets anyone got any recommendations i've been looking at the Corsair HS1 (usb) and it seems to have good reviews i'll be mainly playing BF3 so only really bothered about ingame sound not music quality.
Overall it will be a gaming system but maybe next year i want to start uploading videos to youtube and doing a little video editing so im guessing some extra RAM and a SSD will come in handy
Thanks guys
looks like i killed this thread....whoops :P

The only thing I'd change is the PSU. 650W is fine for one graphics card and to overclock that CPU but Coolermaster don't make good PSUs, I'd spend a little more and get one from a reputable brand. Corsair, Seasonic, Silverstone, OCZ, Superflower and Enermax make great PSUs.
I don't know much about audio so I can't comment on headphones.

psu's are something you really shouldn't skimp on. i have a seasonic x-560 running a rig very similar to the one you want to buy. handles the load very nicely and i'm not even sure if the psu fan has spun very often. as for the headset, unless you actually need one, i'd say find a nice pair of headphones instead. if you want to keep it as inexpensive as possible look at the audio-technica ad700. very good for locating things by sound, but the bass response is pretty weak. if you want to spend some more look into brands like denon, beyerdynamic, sennheiser. get yourself a nice soundcard as well.

coolermaster PSU's are garbage
Antec/Corsair/Silverstone/PCPower & Cooling and some seasonics will save ya alot of headaches in the future.
Alot of times the psu's are just branded and contain the same components of an off brand supply.

Awesome thanks for the replies guys , I just assumed coolermaster was a good brand as they have their hand in most components i've seen so thanks for the advice im going to see if i can find a different PSU , i've seen a couple of antecs and corsairs cheap but i guess if im not going case and psu bundle i might see if i can find a modular psu .
does johnnyguru have a youtube page? or is he a poster on here?
Edit just found him on youtube thanks for the help guys ,
on the headphones part im actually looking for one that has a mic built in as it will only be used for gaming also i don't think seinheisers and denon will be in my budget.
Any one got any input on the graphics card i've been looking at? (Asus GTX560 ti CUii 830mhz)

very well, again i'm not sure about your budget but the sennheiser pc360 headset is one of the best out there. it's pretty costly though, but the sound and mic quality are excellent. as for your graphics card, i don't have that model personally (have the msi tfii 560ti OC) but i can still say the 560ti is an EXCELLENT gaming card. you may find some ati cards that beat it price/performance wise but for me ati wasn't an option as i have had issues with them running certain things in the past. still good cards though for most people.

Well the corsair was literally at the top of the budget (uk price is £64 or $104) and from a quick google search the sennheiser are $60 more :(
Good to know the 560ti is a solid card i figured i'd go with Nvidia as im not bothered about eyefinity and from years ago i had way to many driver issues with an old radeon.
Intially i just want a fullyworking pc to play BF3 and thats all i'll prob do main upgrades like RAM and maybe another 560ti as well as aftermarket CPU cooling early next year at some point .
out of intrest anyone know how much roughly boxed mother boards and psu's weigh ? weird question i know but im off to the states at the end of this month and new egg is cheap as hell compared to uk online sites and was wondering if their not to heavy to buy when im states side and bring back in my checked luggage? im thinking motherboard and CPU is prob a better bet being lighter.

I'm not 100% sure of my case any more.
I mean, it's an okay case (Antec One Hundred) for it's price, but perhaps it'll be a bit too small. I have a lot of space under my desk, so that won't be a problem at all.. Now I just need to find a good, big case for a low price.. Suggestions anyone?

Whats your thoughts on the corsair GS600w PSU as an alternative to the Cooler master GX650W ?
As the corsair is pretty much just in budget although there is another brand called ThermalTake is that any good?

It's not so much the brand that matters but the ODM (original design manufacturer) that makes a difference (brand name DOES matter, just not as much as some people believe). I'm not sure how it is now since they've changed their product lines a bit, but I know Corsair's enthusiast series (TX and HX) and some XFX PSUs and some others are Seasonic ODM. Some companies will use several different ODMs within their product range, anywhere from high end stuff like Seasonic to crappy stuff with bad reputation.
As for GS600, the ODM is CWT, which is not bad but not spectacular either, and it's $99. For similar money you can get the enthusiast class Corsair I mentioned.

no, thats also a small case. he was looking for a larger one. althought the 912 is a very good small case, possibly the best out atm
op, if you go looking for a large case on a tight budget, you will sacrifice quality and performance. I recommend you looking into the SilverStone Raven RV02 or the haf x which is slightly bigger. both will offer far superior cooling than your current case. the haf x is geared toward gamers and has alot of lights etc whereas the the raven is more refined and professional.

I'm thinking of getting a GTX560ti for my new rig and adding a 2nd for SLI in a year or 2, but I keep hearing negative feedback on SLI/Xfire from scaling, driver support and microstuttering, etc... Are you worried about those problems? It would be a bummer if you were playing a game which lacked support and was only utilizing a single card.
James086
08-03-2011, 06:36 PM
SLI and crossfire are pretty damn good these days. Microstutter is no longer a problem (if it appears you can change settings to avoid it) and almost every game supports multiple cards. No big game from the past 3 years hasn't supported it. I wouldn't hesitate to go for 2 cards, especially when they outperform a faster card for less price.
Solidz
08-03-2011, 06:42 PM
well the gtx 570 has almost perfect scaling from what i've seen, i get about double the FPS in every game I have tried thus far. don't notice any stuttering. also the games are either new enough to handle sli or old enough where having sli doesn't matter.

Stuttering can still occur, but its only noticeable at >25fps or thereabouts, at which point if your struggling with SLI/Xfire, you would have no chance of it being playable on a single "stutter free" card. So the whole argument is invalidated really.

Found out my old DVD-writer is an IDE-drive, so I'll need to buy a new one too.
Starting to doubt the fact that I'll ever crossfire my GPU too.. In 3 years time, I might just buy a new GPU to replace the HD6950 I'd be buying now and be done with it. Could drop the PSU down a fair few watts too, maybe buy a Scythe Mugen and OC from the start..

not often i am the one asking questions here but, apparently the p67 chipset will only run a 2nd card (xfire/sli) in x8 mode, thus limiting both to x8? this is correct? wont that make fps suck? i knew this before i bought my p8p67 deluxe, but i dont plan on running sli/xfire anytime soon, i will just get like a gtx590. that will be fine as a single card for like 3 years. but i just wanted to know if i do use sli, will it suck if they are in x8? what actually will be the consequences?

This. x8 and x16 are perfectly fine for crossfire/SLI. SLI will only run on motherboards that it's approved for unless you run a hack anyway.
If you run a single card at x4 it won't affect framerates, if you run 2 cards when one of them is x4 then the framerate will hover around 10fps. I made this mistake when I had a P55 board. The 2 (or more) video cards need to send information between the cards so they can work together. This is why the NF200 chip works, it doesn't increase the bandwidth from the PCIE lanes to the cpu but it increases their bandwidth to each other. The video cards need to "talk" to each other more than the cpu hence the NF200 working.
Even across 3 screens (ie a much larger resolution) the x8 isn't a limiting factor. I've done this with 3 gpus (x16 x16 x8 and then at x8 x8 x8) but it still doesn't affect the framerates in a noticeable manner. In short, x8 x8 is fine for SLI.
Be careful overclocking if you get a GTX590, they are known for popping their VRMs.

Okay guys, about to order :)
Changed a few things.
Changed the PSU(from 650W to 550W), as I decided I'll probably never use crossfire anyway (meaning I can buy a PSU with less watts) - instead I'll just buy a new GPU in the future, if I ever do that.
So this is it:
Cooler Master CM 690 II
Asrock P67 Extreme4
Intel Core i5 2500K Boxed
Sapphire HD6950 Dirt3 Edition
Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ, 1TB
Crucial m4 CT064M4SSD2 64GB
Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3K2/8G
XFX Pro 550W

I dont know whether it has malfunctioned or somehow my computer has turned it off because i didnt something wrong.
Anyway to check?
I'm sure the lack of air will be a problem when i get a better GPU.
BTW, at the guy with two GTX 570, WTF!!!

Solid build. I do however recommend getting the 650 watt psu.
Even though I'll never run crossfire? I won't be OC'ing much either, but okay..

Ive heard of 2500k ocing to 5ghz on air so you should be safe. Not sure about the voltages. Whats your temps and did you stress test ?
Temps were around 50 under stress. My PSU was actually making these clicking noises so I am going to RMA it tomorrow and hopefully get one back soon.

You can keep the PSU for your current build, it's fine. If you plan on getting a new vid card 2 years down the line like a GTX 580 when it's dropped in price significantly, than the 550w won't cut it.

No it's not unless you have a screen made in 2002. It will play games just fine, you can enjoy yourself with a GTX460 but it will not run any game on the highest settings. The resolution that most people play at these days is 1920*1080, a GTX460 1GB will run Metro 2033 maxed at about 17fps. Most games will be ok with a GTX460. I like 60fps in any game I play, I also have 3 screens so even 2 GTX570s wouldn't be enough to keep me happy.

are you for serious? the 460 is a poverty card. trying running any game at 2560x1600 with that thing. the card would probably blow up.
I got a Radeon 5970 and twelve Radeon 5830s and they can easily get brought down to their knees when cranking graphic settings up.

I don't max out metro 2033 with the duel 570s, nor do I max out Witcher 2 with ubersambling enabled, and I'm sure there will be games in the near future where that will also be the case.

Made some changes.. Yet again. Was going to get the Asrock P67 Extreme4 first, but decided to change it in a Pro3. The first card is more geared towards crossfire/SLI, something I'll most likely never use again, so the Pro3 seems like the better choice. It's much cheaper too. I will probably invest the difference in an aftermarket cooler, a Scythe Mugen 2 rev b.
And everyone's telling me different things about the PSU, many are convinced 550W will be more than enough, others are saying I should get 650W minimum..
This will be the system:

Enjoy paying more than you need to. A good 500W PSU is less likely to damage components than a cheap 750W and a system with one HD6950 consumes about 350W at maximum load.*

Also question brahs i see you guys mentioning resolutions and the main one being 1920 x 1080 which is true HD right? my question is this some one mentioned play ing games on 2560x1600 resolution but as im looking for monitors as well the only ones i can seem to find are 1920x 1080 so would playing a game on 2560 x 1600 still show on a monitor thats max resolution is 1920x 1080 ?
sorry if this makes no sense at all.

I overclock my processor to 4.6 ghz and it keeps temps below 70 most of the time. I would only get an h50 if you also intend to overclock, otherwise its pointless. as far as the resolutions, you can find monitors that display higher resolutions than 1920x1080 but they are VERY expensive.

Motherboard is a little bit buggy. For example the speed controller on Chassis Fan #1 does not work in AsRock Extreme Tuning Utility or BIOS, although I have not tried re-installing the bios or fan controller software, so it may be that. Since I only have two fans that I need control over I just plug those into Chassis fans 2 and 3 and they work perfectly. Only other buggy thing I can think of is when I go to check the number of startup phases in the AsRock Extreme Tuning Utility it sometimes resets the voltages to stock without me changing anything, causing my computer to crash since I am overclocked to 4.6ghz. However, I really love it other than these few hiccups. Its so easy to overclock, and sets up SLI like a breeze. No other problems thus far other than the two minor bugs I mentioned :)
Cards work great, no issues thus far with overheating/crashing/etc. Cuts like a knife through hot butter on most of the games I play at the highest settings.
Looking back I might change the PSU at 750w, it doesn't give me alot of room to upgrade.
Also the case, being a mid tower, does not have enough room for cable management, so it looks a bit cluttered on the inside.
So in retrospect I suppose I would have gotten a 1000W power supply along with a full tower case. But other than that I love everything about it! :)

It is indeed more powerful than the consoles, however the picture quality of the consoles is not the same as the maximum settings available on the PC. So if you were to work out the same graphics settings as the consoles run then the GTX460 would be able to run the game much faster. Maximum settings on the PC would be like a slideshow on a GTX460 though. You can see a comparison between the xbox and pc here (http://translate.google.de/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcgames.de%2Faid%2C706639%2FMet ro-2033-PC-vs-Xbox-360-Teilweise-gravierende-optische-Unterschiede-festgestellt%2FPC%2F&sl=de&tl=en). The PC has to do more work to make it look better hence needing way more power. The most obvious difference (since these are low resolution screenshots) is the lighting, on the PC the objects are lit by the light sources where as on the xbox it appears that the models are artificially lit meaning they are a slightly different brightness to their surroundings.*

fittings and tubing $80
motherboard waterblock $90
gpu waterblocks $90 each
pump/reservoir $90
cpu block $90
radiators $200
fans $200
Case $200
hdds $150 for both*
SSD $200 (back when the Vertex 2 was current)
ram $90
GTX580s $550 each
motherboard $450 (and I killed one of these before by spilling some water lol)
power supply $380

Total: $4470 (roughly)
then there's screens 3x $250, keyboard/mouse $120, speakers $80
which pushes it just over $5k

Intel Core i5-2500K PC1155 6MB Cache 3,3GHz retail
TeamGroup Elite DIMM Kit 8GB PC3-10667U CL9-9-9-24/DDR3-1333
Sapphire Radeon HD 6950, 1024MB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, 2x
ASUS P8P67 (Rev.3.0)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev. 2
OCZ Agility 3 60GB, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s
That should be the best combination for that amount of money (~650€, which is the absolute maximum I want to spend).
If it's not, please tell me. :D
Edit:
Also thought about getting the ASUS P8P67 (Rev.3.0) LE instead to save some bucks; I don't really need bluetooth, and otherwise there is not much difference - except in the layout. The LE is smaller, which might get me in trouble with the CPU fan. Any experience on the LE + Freezer 7 Combo?

You should probably go with a different SSD brand. The Vertex 3 has been getting alota bad reviews from stability issues.

The Crucial M4 has a strong track record and costs about the same.

Everything else looks great. Either motherboard should be fine.

yep i would have gone with the 560ti over the 6950 anyway, i was about to suggest it. a question though, what psu are you using. i have noticed you are going for a few budget parts in your pc (i know you are trying to save cash) but psu is quite important you get a quality one. a 650w will be fine for that system, try corsair or antec if not already.*
for your cpu cooler, the freezer pro is pretty good considering how cheap it is, but i noticed you got the 2500k, i.e. you want to oc? im not sure the freezer is up to that, imo its more intended at just keeping your cpu cool under stock load to enlongate component life. Try the Be Quiet! Dark Rock Advanced cooler, not too much more expensive but will offer far superior cooling, be very quiet and will suit overclocked systems. if you dont want to oc, just you may as well stick to the i5 2500 and save some money.*
lastly for the ram, never heard of that manufacturer. i can understand 1333mhz for being on a budget so feel free to stick with that speed but id strongly recommend a known quality manufacturer. I really like gskill recently, ordered a 16gb kit of 2133mhz, overclocked it to 2200 out the box works brilliantly. thats insane for those speeds, and with 16gb. whats more it was two seperate 8gb kits as the 16gb kit was out of stock! great value for money too, check them out.

Too late, already bought it all! Ha!
That said:
PSU: I already have a brand (can't recall which one now, and I'm too lazy to open my PC now) 650W PSU. Learned my lesson when my last one exploded 2 years ago. Literally. Smoke and all. :D
RAM: 1333 vs 1600: there should be no noticable difference in everyday (gaming) use. I'll just take the risk with the manufacturer. But you're right, a more known one would have probably been better. We'll see.
2500k + fan: I'll overclock the 2500k after the warranty has worn off. So, instead of having to upgrade my CPU, I'll squeeze the last bit out of this. The fan should be up to this task (as far as I read). If it's not - a new fan is cheaper than a new CPU.
Btw: I did not buy the LE mainboard, because I read it sucks for OCing (which will be important in the future), and it's smaller (layout wise) than the regular one (which leads to trouble with the CPU fan + RAM banks).
Edit:
Won't assemble the thing today. Fuark. Need to finish my bachelor's thesis first. Another 30 pages to go, and I've already got a major geek boner for the new PC that's waiting for me.. fml

haha i always do when i build mine, just looking at the components sitting on the floor in my room in their boxes. take your time though dont rush it or you might break something. remember to use an anti static wristband or a mat or whatever. what i usually do is i have a laptop or something on hand where im building it in case there is anything im not sure of about the components so i can look it up on the interwebs*

Hey everyone,
I need a new video card as my old one is dying on me. I have been looking at these two cards http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130565 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625
I don't really game on my PC, though I do a lot of CAD work and like to watch HD movies. What do you guys think of either of those cards? Or is there a better/cheaper card that would fit my needs? Also, I will be adding a 6th HDD to my tower and was wondering with a new video card and all those HDD do I need to upgrade my PSU (is a 500w PSU atm)?
Thanks

This prob doesn't need to be said, but will your mobo support PCI-E 2.0? Some PCI-E 1.0 mobos are not backwards compatible, despite claims that will.
The 550ti will be fine if you want to save some cash, but either will do for your needs. Your pushing it with a 500w psu, but I think it'll be fine. Especially if you choose the 550ti since it has lower power usage vs the gtx460.

Yup, the most power demanding hardware is the vid card and the 550ti only needs like 350w. Add the 6 hhds and it's still well below 500w.

The 650d is $190.. and it looks like a lian li case that I could get for $65. Total waste in terms of aesthetics.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEE!!
Got my case today and it was completely busted. Obviously was dropped during shipping because one corner of the box was smashed, and when I opened it, the entire case was skewed. As if someone grabbed the top of one side and the bottom of the other side and pushed as hard as they can. Had to send it back to Newegg. .
brb 3 business days to get back to California, 2-5 business days to process, then 3 more business days to send another one. Yes mad.
Decided to play it smart though and am using the extra time before I build to buy an SSD. *I decided to forgo one originally simply because of budget concerns but now I'm figuring, to hell with it. *If I want this machine to last it's worth the money.

What you brahs think about the Antec Kuhler H2O 620 Liquid Cooling System?
I'm definitely going bulldozer when they appear and I want to overclock passed 4ghz. I want to know the best price to performance (cooling) Ratio compared to the closed loop water cooling sytems to aircooling and what would give me the best temps?
Also this is the first step to my bulldozer upgrading. I'm tryin to keep it budget, but at the same time I want a second video card, since I already have one 6870, I think a second one for 179 is a good deal for a cheap xfire system

Not a fan of closed loop cooling systems. Think you are better off getting a high end air cooler or actually building a water cooled rig. You can get the rasa kits for $130 and that has everything you need to build a full loop and upgrade later. http://www.frozencpu.com/products/11743/ex-wat-159/XSPC_Rasa_750_RS240_Universal_CPU_Water_Cooling_Ki t_-HOT.html. I have it and recommend it.
In terms of best price to performance ratio air cooler, the coolermaster hyper 212 is pretty much the agreed leader.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065
I would wait for bulldozer to be released to determine what cooling you need. AMD tend to have lower temps than intel. You may not even need a high end cooling system.

OC'ing your CPU won't boost any performance for games. Also, do not attempt to OC with the stock heatsink. It is terrible.

If this is for gaming then get a cheaper motherboard and a more expensive graphics card. Also do NOT get a Rosewill PSU, they have a nasty habit of exploding (literally) and taking out everything else connected to them.

Been using my 120GB OCZ Vertex 2 for about a year now, still works perfectly.
****. I'm so upset. I was going to purchase the Gigabyte GA-Z68XP for 99, and it sold out when I was just about to buy it, literally while I was in the shopping cart to to do an instore pick up.

Im building a PC for BF3 but I have never built one before. I dont really know a whole lot about good PC parts but I put together a list of parts I might get and Im just wondering where I could improve the build without adding too much to the price. I hope to play the game with very high graphics but I have a budget of about 800/900 euro or roughly 1200/1300 dollars.
This is what I am looking at atm:
CPU- Intel Core i7-2600K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor $310.99
CPU Cooler- Cooler Master RR-B10-212P-G1 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler $24.99
Motherboard- Intel DH67GDB3 Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard $102.99
Memory- Corsair 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory $44.99
Hard Drive- Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $57.99
Video Card- EVGA GeForce GTX 570 1.25GB Video Card $329.99
Case- Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX Mid Tower Case $54.99
Power Supply- Antec 750W ATX12V Power Supply $94.99
Optical Drive- Sony AD-7710H-01 DVD/CD Writer $30.99
Operating System- Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit) $91.98
Overall it will cost about 750 euro. I also live in Ireland so unfortunatly I wont be able to use New Egg for good deals.
A few things Im not sure about are:
-if all the parts would be compatible.
-what kind of wattage I need for the power supply.
-what kind of cd/dvd drive is good because the price can vary by a lot and I dont know what difference a good one would make.
-would the PC be good enough to run BF at very high settings/ near max
Any suggestions are welcome and thanks in advance

Also, if you're interested in a cheap way to boost your GPU I'm selling my Gigabyte 5770. I got it in Dec and just upgraded to dual 6870's. I have all the paperwork for warranties etc and it's in 100% working condition, no cosmetic damage, OC'd to stable temps never gone over 80C (not sure of the clock speeds, I forgot).

I'm not entirely sure, but the power supply you have may be incompatible with the video card. The video card you have requires a +12V with a minimum of 33Amps, but your PSU doesn't have it. I'm not entirely sure though because your PSU uses multiple rails and I'm not entirely sure if they are independent or join as a single.

alright guys just finished filling my shopping cart for my new build, its gonna be pretty pricey (to me) but it should last me a few years and run everything on max easily (building this mainly for skyrim, also BF3 and D3)
cpu- i7 2600k
mobo- asus sabertooth p67
vid- 2x gtx 570 sli
mem- corsair vengeance 8gb
power- corsair hx850
HD1- crucial 64gb ssd
HD2- wd cavair black 1 tb 7200
cpu cooler- corsair h60
opt- samsung bluray combo
case- corsair 800d
I also got a little 40mm fan to help cool the motherboard bc i read it can sometimes run hot and it doesnt have an assist fan, also three more 120mm fans for the top of the case
I'm also aware the case is really expensive, but i don't mind, its the one i want
total cost is 2500, including sidewinder x4 keyboard, g500 mouse, and 24 inch lcd led monitor and shipping
p.s.- let me know if you see anything stupid i may have overlooked

Why the 2600k? It shows no benefit over the 2500k in gaming. There have been multiple test showing the minimal gains and they state its due to the .1ghz Both of these OC'd to 4.5 should offer the same performance.

I don't need HT so the 2600k isn't really practical, I just tend to want the best, and the extra money isn't gonna hurt me

Hey guys, i thought about cyberpower PC but a bunch of people talked me into building my own PC. I did a lot of research and have an idea of what components to go with but my biggest fear is compatibility. Also i know there is a PC thread on top but everybody has different price ranges so its hard to pick the right parts that will give me the biggest bang for my buck. Im not really looking to save, just want to build a beastly rig. As far as cases, i don't care about lights and all that stuff.
Could anybody be kind enough to take the time and come up with a really good build for around $1200-$1500 that will last me for years? Also please keep in mind, DO NOT INCLUDED a video card in the budget. I already have GTX 570 ti in my current PC which im going to keep until the next batch of cards arrives.
Im guessing im going with I2500k cpu etcc, 8 to 12 gig ram and SSD drive. If you could provide Newegg links id really appreciate it.
Thanks again and my measily reps! reps!!

Hey guys, I'm building a gaming PC, slightly budget. I would like to complete the tower around 700, $800 at most because I still need to buy a moniter.
First things first, CPU wise, I'm thinking a phenom II x4 965 or x6 1090T. Which mobo would you guys suggest

I'd go with a i5 2500k, those CPUs are outdated by todays standards (not saying they are not good, I have the Phenom II x4 955 and love it but I've had it for over 1.5yrs) Won't be as much as a bottleneck if you get a better CPU now!
There is a chart flowing around with budgets and what parts to get. I'll try to find it.

You don't want to trade only a few hours of your time to save money? I mean if you have more money than time, sure... but other than that it's very easy to do. You just plug **** in for the most part. You can read most mobo manuals and it will instruct you how to assemble most things.

is it really just all 'plugging in'? no thermal paste or soldering or any crap like that right?

this video shows a step by step way to put together the PC. it is just plugging a few wires in and clipping the parts into place. the only time you might have to use thermal paste is if you get an after market cpu cooler.
use this video if you are ever putting together a pc, its very usefull. the other parts are also good if you need to know how to install windows/drivers etc

Looks solid, almost exatly what I am building. Only thing I can think of would be a better video card and a SSD, but the 560ti is supposedly a good card, your opinion? How does your build run games like metro 2033, crysis, Bad Company 2?

560 Ti is a beast and easily overclocks to 570 levels of performance. I originally wanted a 6950 but went with a 560 Ti due to it being 70$ cheaper cuz I got it on sale and it was a much smaller card (had size constraints with my old case). At 1680x1050 from what I seen the 560 Ti beats the 6950 but at higher res the 6950 is few % better

Honestly, I would think harder about it brah. Not trying to tell you what to/not to buy, just sayin:
You're dropping money for previous gen chip. I know some people don't necessarily HAVE to have the latest and the greatest, but you should consider what you'll be getting out of it for your money compared to what you already have. If your goal is gaming, it's also worth assessing what other bits will bottleneck.
If you still are set on upgrading your cpu, then 955 would be an option.

What is your total budget?
Corsair PSUs are usually good, but CX series (CWT ODM) isn't as good as the TX; it'll cost a bit more but see if you can go for a TX650 (Seasonic ODM, much better than CWT). I would actually consider going for a 750.

My pc specs are
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Card name: ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series 1086mb
I have $150 budget to upgrade my pc, any ideas?
What video card would you guys recommend for me to upgrade to?

I've already ordered the things I listed above - Didn't really have a budget, Was just after a decent build for as cheap as possible
Edit: will obviously update components if they turn out to be no good
If you've already ordered it, not much you can do, unless you want to hassle with exchanging and all that. Main concern with the PSU comes from long-term outlook because generally speaking, PSU is something many system builders use across multiple builds.
As it is though, everything should be compatible.

Since the specs for battlefield came out, I have decided ill only be getting a 560 TI SLI or HD 6950 CF
My specs are :
I have a Intel i7 920
5 gbs of DDR3
Asus P6t SE motherboard
GT 9800
800 Watts Power Supplies (CyberPowerPC XF800S Performance ATX 2.0 Power - Quad SLI Ready)
Will my motherboard and PSU handle these cards?
Will my motherboard and PSU handle SLI/CF with two of these cards?
Sounds like your motherboard only supports crossfire.
"The P6T supports both SLI and CrossFire X but the P6T SE does away with SLI support and only supports CrossFire X."

Now ill try to find the specs of my PSU and see how it goes.
Either way, my motherboard can handle two HD radeon 6970 or 6950, right?

So I emailed cyberpower pc about my PSU and this is what I got
"The power supply you ordered is a genetic brand with 800Watt and Quad SLI ready. There are no other specs."

Recently im starting to not even touch my xbox in favor of playing games on my PC, im talking about re buying games for the PC which i already have on xbox because the experience is so much better!
I would love to play something like black ops on the pc after playing it on console for so long, used to be pretty dominant at black ops using crappy controller aim. Then again everyone is on the same plane.
PC gaming really is better than console gaming though, in every way. Just need to sell my xbox, pick up a new processor and probably a new gpu come christmas and my system will be a beast..well kinda.
Is there alot of difference between DDR2 and DDR3 RAM?

Do not get that power supply. Get a reputable brand and I'd go for 750W (more will also be fine but there's no point). A generic brand PSU will not deliver it's power rating, nor will it deliver stable power (unstable can damage the sensitive components). They also have a tendency for the capacitors to explode (pop and a small puff of smoke) which usually destroys everything connected to the PSU. Get something from one of these brands (in no particular order):
Corsair
Seasonic
Silverstone
Superflower
Antec
Enermax
OCZ

Not a huge difference in performance but DDR3 is definitely faster. It depends on your chipset which you need though, it's not like you can choose to upgrade to DDR3 without changing your cpu and motherboard.

So on top of buying a new graphics card ill need to buy a new PSU? fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
EDIT:
Is this real life? He just said the following
"You do not need the specs to do crossfire. Any 800Watt of power supply can do crossfire. However, with two AMD Radeon HD 6950 video card in crossfire, you will need at least 1,000Watt of power supply"

If anyone could help me put something together that would be able to run these games without going overboard I would appreciate it... and will rep you :)

If i plan to crossfite, do the cards have the be from the same manufacturer or same exact model or can the be different?

what resolution we talking?
GTX-570 or 6970 should cut through everything just fine at 1920x1200 or less make sure psu is up to the task though.
Everything else is pretty standard, 2500k to save some cash over 2600k, decent PSU from corsair, antec, thermaltake. some ddr3 random HDD etc :) GPU is most important these days.
(if you want to save some coin and your mobo can do sli, I would snag 2x GTX-460s for cheap and be just as fast if not faster)

Doesnt matter, you can crossfire a 6970 and a 6950 if you wanted just the same series is all. Ram size doesnt matter either IE 2gb and 1gb 6950 will play together just fine.

I'm not sure if I need all that stuff, though. It totals out to around ~$1,000 USD (a little more) but I really don't want to spend that much.
Is there anything I can downgrade without too much sacrifice? I will mostly be using this rig to write/compile lots of code, test software (running VMWare as well), and gaming from time to time (the new Deus Ex, CS:S, Batman Arkham games, and other similar RPG games like BioShock 2, Fallout 3, etc. [but some newer titles/games]). I'm not sure I need as much as I listed, but I mostly care about stability and not overclocking and burning my system out in a year and rendering it unusable or needing to replace parts often.

The price and the amount of storage they provide sucks. What is the size of your screen? If it is 24" or above your GPU will be fine. If you want to save a bit more look into the 460. The case you chose is a bit small, installing will be a challenge if you have huge hands.

IF your on a budget, the SSD's are probably gonna have to go. They're awesome don't get me wrong, but very expensive and cost inefficient compared to standard HDD's. To save some cash you could go from the 6950 to a 6870, since gaming doesn't seem to be that important to you.

They are priced very similarly yet one is (seemingly) faster, and significantly larger. Is there some sort of catch? I don't want it to be too unstable because I hear larger drives fail more often than smaller ones. Also I didn't choose a 10,000 RPM drive because of platter instability issues I've heard of.
