I'm currently looking for a new laptop because the one I have is junk. I sort of rather go through bestbuy because my mom has reward zone points that'll save me about 50-75$ but its not that big of a deal since that's basically paying for tax.
My brother recommended me this one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+1...&skuId=5395753
Basically I mostly just browse the internet (have about 5-10 tabs open), stream videos/sport games, and do homework and listen to music. My current laptop has 4gb ram and when I have 4 tabs open of fire fox it uses over 2gb...
This is what I have now:
Model is HP Pavillion dv7 (beats audio one)
17.3 screen 64bit
4gb ram
AMD phenom II N850 Triple Core Processor 2.20 GHz
~600gb
Price range is <$700. What do you guys think?

There's nothing wrong with the laptop you have now. Just back up your files and do a fresh install of Windows without all the HP bloatware. Then if you want you can upgrade the RAM to 8GB and maybe swap out your hard drive for a solid state drive. you will notice a much bigger difference from those two upgrades than buying a new laptop.

The thing over heats so fast and I read its because the processor sucks.

yeah those CPU's run hot but it shouldnt overheat from surfing the web or watching videos. you are probably blocking the intake fans or they are clogged with dust.

I built a hardcore budget rig around a 965 Be and HD 6950 2gb.
Non-oc'd I am getting 50-70fps on bf3 at all settings ultra (no anti aliasing) on 1080p resolution.
Once I get better coolers for my case and cpu I will oc everything and see how far I can push it.

This Samsung ssd is suppose to be $89.99 shipped, if you enter this promo code: EMCYTZT1880

Deal starts 7/9/12. I believe newegg follows pst time so it's going to be 3am on the east coast.

yeah luckily i checked, i saw a picture of the original EVGA 670 with reference PCB which has like a block of plastic at the end of the card to make up for the heat sink shroud, but the newer 670 FTW version from EVGA supposedly uses the 680 PCB. i used EK configurator and it said it should fit... hopefully

Why even get a water block for a 6xx till they start releasing ones with unlocked voltages? Unless you plan to hard mod a 6xx you won't be ocing a 6xx to the point of needing to bring down the temp that much. On my 680 oc as far as it will go it barely hits 60c on a modest fan curve. Because of the voltage cap it's hard to really heat these cards up.

i get the same temps playing BF3 on ultra with my 670. When i first installed the 670 I was getting temps of 80+ and a lot of crashing. Hit up EVGA and they said they'd RMA for me. I adjusted the fan curve and was getting temps barely hitting 60's and no crashing but I RMA'd anyways just in case. water cooling will hopefully bring the temp down even lower and I wont have to worry at all about temps.
water cooling it is also for aesthetics, before this i had a 560 Ti watercooled as well so I have a loop going and wouldn't want to have everything water cooled except for the gpu even if i dont need it

Guess it is fair amount quieter as well. If I was more oc savey I would use the hotwires on my card and overvolt it, and probably go that route.

WHAT DO?!?
z77, um corsair 750watt, SSD, IDK!!!
EDIT:
Hit power, fans spin for 1 second and then stop and nothing turns on.
EDIT 2:
The power LED on the case (NZXT Phantom) is blinking and the power LED on the actual mobo MSI GD65 Z77 is fully illuminated
EDIT 3:
Now the Power LEDs on the case button won't illuminate, it'll turn the pc on not off, won't reset, and the integrated graphics won't work.

did you plug in the ATX and the additional (if your mobo has them) power inputs? some mobos have the traditional power in and an additional 8-pin connector.
did you attach all of your peripherals (ie video cards, sound cards, drives) to your psu?
try turning the machine on without any expansion slots filled to see if it works without them, then add each one by one.

RMA CPU?Power your comp again and take note of what number is on the debug led of your motherboard before it shuts down. Then flip through your motherboard's manual and find the number associated with whatever the debug led posted before your comp shut down. Could be anything, I would check to make sure all the power cables are seated properly to all your main components. Then I'd proceed to make sure the RAM dimms are in their proper places as specified by the mobo's manual.
What operating system you guys running? Is Win 7 Professional worth or should I just get home?Win 7 ultimate. There isn't really alot of difference in the versions of Win 7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/compare.

then it gets to installing windows and crashes whenever the files are being extracted or w/e.

okay so I got the OS installed and everything was working fine and all last night, but now video would cut out or it'd power off... and depending on the sitch the front power LED wouldn't illuminate
so what i did to even get it to turn on cause some times it wouldn't is jiggle the power cord going IN to the BACK of the power supply that connects it to the wall, and then everything would start working again.

Since you are going to be recording while playing GW2 i would suggest a very good graphics card since fraps can really lower your fps while in gameplay, for Nvidia get gtx 560 or better, for AMD get a 6850 or better. The current series for nvidia and amd are the 600 and 7000 respectively, 500 and 6000 are 1 generation behind. Also what resolution is your monitor?
6+ gb of RAM will help, but you can get away with the standard 4gb. Invest in a 1tb storage hdd for all your videos. Samsung spinpoint F3, WD green or blue will do just fine black is unnecessary since the drive will be used mainly for storage so fast load times are not that important.

i'm gonna try unclicking autorestart in the bios to see if any error thing comes up. CPU is staying cool so i don't think that's the problem. um it's a corsair hx750

tried to see if it was a software problem. In windows it'd showdown/restart every 30-50 minutes in use or idling
figured if it still did that in BIOS it'd be a hardware issue and it do
So RMA-ing my PSU tomorrow, wonder how long all that'll take.
edit: i don't think it could be anything else with my previously mentioned problems.
CPU is stable, cool running, all that. All ram modules are recognized and running at full speed, mobo doesn't show any problems,BIOS was fine, all ports working, everything recognized... blah

sup guys. 1 step short of ordering my first ever selfbuilt pc, but I came up with a problem:
case is the full tower nzxt phantom and id like to install all 3 additional coolers and a cm hyper 212 evo. the problem is, that the 200mm side panel would collide with the cpu cooler. now the solution I came up with, is that instead of the 200x200x30mm fans from nzxt ill order a 200x200x20mm fan from bitfenix, which would theoreticly leave a whopping 2mm between cpu cooler and the sidepanel fan.
is it even worth it?
I want the sidepanel fan because I dont have enough intake fans otherwise (2x200mm and 1x 140mm for exhaust, 1x 200mm and 3x 140 for intake with the sidepanel fan)
is it even worth it? oh and also I like the blue LEDs on the side :D
Edit: Just found out that the 3 fans alone would run me 50€+delivery. fuk that lol
srsly thinking about getting 1x 140mm front intake and a huge cpu cooler. what you guys thinking?

Forget putting a fan on the side panel, my bro has the same exact case as you he put a 140mm fan on the bottom front panel and another 200mm on top. The phantom already has great airflow putting a fan on the side panel may mess around with the airflow of the case.

Yeah, he definitely dun goofed.
If streaming and playing games is his computer's main use, hyperthreading on a 2600K is of no use. He just paid an extra $100 for a feature that won't be used often or at all.

so sending out my psu today.
Just wondering if BIOS functions fine, memory is fully recognized. CPU runs solid steady and cool. it shouldn't be the mobo right?
only problem now was a restart every 45ish minutes. EDIT: and it restarts even after sitting in BIOS for a while so that points to it having to be a hardware prolem right?

looks like it, but before sending it in maybe borrow a PSU from somebody and just connect it to mobo and gfx card to see if it REALLY isnt the mobo?

thxThe best 120mm fans are the Scythe Gentle Typhoon, not really sure of a good fan for 140mm, but I have heard great reviews with the new Corsair AF 140mm fans. Fans with great airflow will most likely have no leds on them.
As for lighting up your case I'd go with an led strip since they are far more flexible than a cathode. Look up the NZXT led strips, they are really good for lighting up a case and have adjustable settings.
Jelly of the Americabrahs PC component prices. :(
Brought a NZXT Phantom a few months back my chitty nonmodular generic PSU won't reach the board from the bottom mount LOL fml
It's probably time for some upgrading anyway.
Not sure if want the Asus SABERTOOTH Z77 for $412 or Asus RAMPAGE IV GENE Intel X79 for $516
Visually I like them both and I don't care for overclocks

haha, funny that you mention it.
Ive checked out some overclocking forums and there was a phantom owners thread, which I hit up and found many cool mods.
Actually since im not using the side panel fan, im going to cut out the gap where it was, exactly like its on the nzxt phantom window side panel, by nzxt, and then throw in a blue glass window. will look sick as fuk when I stuff it with blue fans.

Just bought my first custom build from Micro Center yesterday:
i5-3570k (not overclocking at all, was originally going to get i5 3450, but this one was cheaper in bundle deal w/ mobo)
Zotac GTX 560
Asrock Z77 Pro4 1155 ATX mobo
8GB DDR3 RAM
Seagate 500GB HDD
OCZTech 128GB SSD
DiabloTek Evo case
Inland Pro 600 Watt PSU
24" ACER LCD Monitor
Logitech 2.1 LS Speakers
I got home, watched the NewEgg videos on how to put it together, going good...go to test and the bish doesn't power on :(
Tried paperclip method & different outlets. When I plug the cord in from the outlet to the PSU, I can hear like a small electric pop, nothing out of ordinary like you're plugging something else up & not sure if this has any relevance to helping.

plug in psu into mobo with only cpu attach. dont screw in the mobo into the case yet. place it on a piece of cardboard and then power on the mobo (short the two power switch pins).
this is just to make sure your 3 main components are working. after that, just put in piece of piece and test to rule out any DOA's.

But Dwood's bracket are nice and and customizable, the cost for a bracket is only $5. The replies here so far and what others have said are making me lean towards an SSD. I'm moving country in about a year so I just started thinking that getting another monitor might be a bit more of a hassle to transport in the end. I do sometimes find myself wanting to look at other things while playing (i.e. watching a movie while farming in diablo 3 or something), but I guess that can wait a bit longer.

I'm thinking of building a new PC brahs but I don't want to spend more than $1000. How do I figure out which parts I wanna use?
i would go with something like:
CPU: AMD FX-4170, quad core 4.2 ghz $139.99
MOBO: ASUS M5A78L-M LX $59.99
RAM: Patriot Gamer 2 Series (2 x 4GB) $39.99
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7950, $349.99
Case: Fractal Design 3000 $69.99
PSU: RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 630W $49.99
SSD: OCZ 240 GB $169 ($20 less with rebate)
OS: win7, $99
Optical drive: Asus CD/DVD burner, $19.99
total: $997.93
you could easily go with a cheaper case (~$30 for a cheaper one), cpu (~$30 less for a slower am3+), and gpu (7850 is ~$100 less ) but if i had $1k and needed a computer i'd get that.

I'm thinking of building a new PC brahs but I don't want to spend more than $1000. How do I figure out which parts I wanna use?
I typed this up awhile ago.
Ok, brahs here is my example parts guide for a pc build, I have listed the parts you need to build a decent gaming PC. I'll also explain my choices and why I picked it. So if you have never built a pc, this guide will help you pick out your parts.
This should be considered as a general guideline into building your own rig. Other dynamics like tax, location, shipping and handling will vary the cost of your pc in the end.
I will only include the bare minimum components necessary to run most games at a decent frame rate. So no SSD, raid controllers, watercooling kits, cathodes/led strips, after market heat sinks and fans. All prices will based on Newegg prices to keep it simple for me, I highly encourage shopping around for the best deals.
Just to keep in mind these builds were made up to compliment my two montiors which has a native resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p) each. So at the very minimum I will be gaming at 1080p. Chances are
If im getting 20-30fps with the entry build and you have a monitor with less resolution than mine, you will get a far better fps than me.
[Getting Started]
When I start builds I always decide on the purpose of the rig im building. A 'facebook machine' is alot cheaper than a gaming rig, next decide on what CPU manufacture you want to go with; Intel or AMD. Deciding on what CPU to use will determine what motherboard you are going to need. Intel CPU must be paired with Intel Socket motherboards and AMD must be paired with AMD socket motherboards.
I then narrow down my choice on which graphics card I will buy based on my monitor's native resolution and if I want to max out the extra graphics fluff in games.
[Entry Build]
CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 450 = $70
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-970 AM3+ = $80
RAM: G. Skill Ripjaws 4gb (2x2gb) 1333mhz = $21
GPU: AMD 6770 = $120
PSU: Corsair CX430 = $45
HDD: Samsung F3 500GB = $70
case: NZXT Source 210 = $40
Optical: Asus dvd combo = $20
Total = $466 (not including tax+s/h)
CPU: Not everybody sees the amazing value of this cpu, it has a great stock clock of 3.2ghz and can overclock really well. Now the amazing value of this cpu comes from it's ability to unlock that 4th core providing you with more processing power.
However there is a catch, the reason why it's 4th core is locked is because it is deffective. Instead of discarding an entire cpu, AMD disabled that core and marketed this cpu as a triple core cpu. On the flip side in order to meet the sales demand
it's common for AMD to purposely disable a perfectly good core. So it's a gamble to get perfect 4th core, but for the price vs. cons, it's worth it and if you're in luck you can get a free Phenom X4 cpu instead of an Athlon X3.
If you're not into overclocking this will serve you just fine with 3 cores.
Mobo: Nothing fancy just a AM3+ socket to take advantage of USB 3.0. AM3 socket cpus are compatible with AM3+ socket mobo, however this isn't true for the other way around.
RAM: For the price nothing beats the reliability of G.skill ram.
GPU: The 6770 is the most cost effective at this price range and will allow me to play Crysis Warhead, Skyrim (w/mods), BF3 with medium settings at 1080p. Also these little graphics cards overclock amazingly.
PSU: It's far better to get powersupplies from reputable companies, this component has the potential to rustle the jimmies of all your other components. So please don't skimp out on this, unless you want your components fried.
HDD: At a cost of $0.14/GB this is definitely one of the best priced reliable HDD on the market. And this is why I will be using this for most of my builds until the Western Digital Caviar Blacks drop down again.
Case: Nothing special about it's exterior, but it's interior is nicely laid out for cable management. The case only comes with one 120mm fan, more can be added later.
Optical: Just your standard DVD combo drive.
[Mainstream]
CPU: Intel i3 2120 = $124
Mobo: ASRock H77 Pro4 = $90
RAM: G. Skill Ripjaws 4gb (2x2gb) 1333 mhz = $21
GPU: MSI Twin Frozr HD 7850 = $240
PSU: Antec NEO ECO 520W = $60
HDD: Samsung F3 500GB = $70
case: Antec 300 = $55
Optical: Asus dvd combo = $20
Total = $680 (not including tax+s/h)
CPU: This CPU is not overclockable! It still has the horsepower to beat out an AMD 965 BE. It does come with an integrated graphics
Which can be turned on at the bios. I do not advise turning on the integrated graphics, if you're getting a dedicated graphics card.
Mobo: People are claiming Asrock is not a good brand, but in reality Asrock is an offshoot of Asus. This is the reason why ASUS and Asrock bios look similar.
RAM: Same as ENTRY build
GPU: At this price range the the 7850 will handle most of your graphics needs at 1080p and under. Current benchmarks at tomshardware and Anandtech point to this conclusion.
PSU: Slightly more powerful, within budget and from a reputable brand.
HDD: Same as ENTRY build
Case: Has a nice exterior and easy to cable manage.
Optical: Same as ENTRY build
[Enthusiast]
CPU: Intel i5 2500k = $220
Mobo: Asus P8z77-v = $185
Ram: G. Skill Ripjaws 8gb (2x4gb) 1600mhz = $46
GPU: Evga GTX 670 = $400
PSU: Corsair CX600 = $70
HDD: Samsung F3 500GB = $70
Case: Corsair Carbide 300R = $80
Optical: Asus dvd combo = $20
****If you have a Microcenter near you, buy these instead of the ones posted above****
**** CPU: Intel i5 3570k = $190 ****
**** MOBO: Asrock z77 extreme 4 = $90 ****
Total = $1091 (not including tax+s/h)
****Total = $966 (not including tax + s/h)****
CPU: Ok now we are in the "big boys club" I specifically picked out the 2500k for it's overclocking ability, with it's unlocked multiplier we can go beyond the stock clock speeds. If you're looking to overclock beyond 4.2ghz I highly suggest getting an aftermarket heatsink and fan (hsf).
The best and most affordable on the market is the Cooler Master 212+ . The 3570K is only worth it if you have a Microcenter near you to take advantage of the deals.
Mobo: Can handle the most beastly overclock you can throw on your CPU. Will be great if you decide to get an SSD because of sata 3 support.
RAM: Same brand as ENTRY build, but slightly faster and higher capacity.
GPU: The GTX 670 with 2gb of vram is the best buy at this budget bracket. The 7950 with 3gb of vram is may seem like a better buy based on specs and price, but you will be getting -30fps in BF3 at 1920x1200 resolution is a serious drop.
To top it off the 7950 is the 670's competition and is seriously lagging behind in the benchmarks. In this scenario the $50+ premium over the 7950 is definitely worth it.
If you made it to this part of the guide then you must have really deep pockets. (mind spotting me some?) This part of the guide will be pretty much overkill for gaming.
[Insane]
CPU: Intel i7-3770K = $340
MOBO: ASUS Sabertooth Z77 = $240
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB = $105
GPU: EVGA GTX 680 = $500
PSU: XFX core edition PRO 850W = $120
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black = $120
Case: NZXT Phantom = $120
Optical: ASUS dvd combo: $20
Total: $1565
CPU: I pray to the aesthetics god you know how to overclock before you buy this. This has hyperthreading and a stock clock of 3.5ghz with a turbo of 3.9ghz. With it's unlocked multiplier you can easily reach 4.5ghz.
MOBO: Supports 3 way sli or crossfireX
RAM: Has enough ram to open tons of instances of any progam you want.
GPU: The steepest premium I've ever seen on a single gpu. considering the gtx 670 can be OC'd to 680 speeds, however that is besides the point of shear performance of this card.
case: Perfect full tower for this budget. Enough space to wiggle around in and you don't even have to try with cable management.
-------- Conclusion -------------
Pick parts based on benchmarks, so do your research!!! At least on the CPU and GPU because neglecting one and maxing out the other can cause a bottleneck. In laymen's terms: your performance in one component can limit the performance of another component, mainly CPU and GPU. After you have done your research, shop around for the best prices and decide if the benchmarks posted are justified for it's price.
Benchmarks are the stats of a given component based on different tasks (gaming, encoding). If gaming is your primary concern, stay with an i5. The i7 is expensive because it has hyperthreading which the i5's don't have. HT offers zero performance boost in gaming, so it's useless to go with an i7.
Picking a case (enclosure) is purely subjective, we all have different likes and dislikes, what I tried to do is stay as close as possible to the price point and ensure the case had a decent airflow and aesthetics.
I did not include an SSD because it isn't necessary to build a PC with it yet. It may have fast read and write times, but at a $0.92/GB the price is not worth it yet.
Keep in mind the parts I picked are what was the most cost effective on newegg, if you find a better deal anywhere please make the necessary substitution to what I have listed. I hope this helped you guys out on your parts picking.
[Laptop vs. Desktop]
If you can't decide between getting a laptop or desktop, I highly suggest getting the desktop because it will be significantly cheaper and have a better performance.
Even though laptop may sport an i5 in it's specs, it's actually a weaker than it's desktop counterpart because mobile versions of components are stripped downn for it's power consumption.
[AMD vs. nVidia]
The difference between the 2 are the features they offer. Nvidia sort of has a leg up on AMD Radeon with physx, which allows particle calculation to be done on the gpu instead of the cpu giving you more realistic particle effects in games and better framerates. However most games don't support physx. Also Geforce cards perform fantastically if you are into Folding@Home.
The current highend Radeon (HD 79XX series) cards come with 3GB of vram while Nvidia's (GTX 670 & 680) come with 2GB of vram. More vram is great if you have a multi-monitor setup with a resolution over 1080p.
One of the problems with nVidia is that it's graphics cards are heavily over-priced for the performance it offers.

I need some help with building a new gaming PC.
The config that I had decided on is eerily similar to SynapticCleft's enthusiast rig. But I have a couple questions.
Processor- i5-2500k
Motherboard- Asus P8Z77-V
Cooling- CM Hyper 212 EVO
RAM- G.Skill Ripjaws1600Mhz 4G X 2
PSU- Corsair TX650v2
Cabinet- Corsair 400R
Monitor- Benq G2222HDL
Hard Disk- 500GB WD HDD
My first doubt is regarding the graphics card. I will be using a single monitor @1980*1020. Should I get the 670tx/ 680 tx / AMD 7870 or AMD 7970? Are the 680GTX and 7970 too much overkill? I expect to be able to play Crysis 2, Witcher 2, GTA 4 etc at 50+ constant FPS at Ultra. Future proofing for 2+ years is welcome but for now I only 1 year future proofing. Also, will the CPU bottleneck the high-end cards among these?
*I have no experience with overclocking, but willing to learn
* Right now I am inclined towards the 670. Where I live, 680 and 7970 are equal in price, 670 is inbetween 7870 and 7970

IMO the price to the performance they offer are not worth it. 670 and 7950 are better choices. You will also do fine with a GTX 570 or Radeon 6950 in Crysis, GTA 4, and Witcher 2.
Bottle necks will occur depending on your cpu's model and it's clock speeds or how far you've manually overclocked your gpu. Any generation i5 or i7 should not have any problems with with keeping up with the latest graphics cards. Likewise with AMD's Athlon series and later.

Just put an H80 in my PC. Soundsgoodman. Also never realized that the fan I had mounted on the side of my case was loud as fuuu. I always thought it was my previous CPU cooler. Took that chit out asap. PC overall is about 10x quieter than it was before, srs. Mostly due to the side fan.
Current clock on my 2500k is 5ghz @ 1.4v. Ran prime95 for a good 4 hours yesterday and no signs of crashing. Peak temps at 76C, but the average is about 70C during the stress test. Never goes over 60C during any intense real world usage. Gonna try running it for 12 hours tonight. Also got a 7970 coming on Monday. Should be awesome.
EDIT:
Scratch that, they just delivered the 7970! Holy chit. Too bad I have to sleep right now.

the thermaltake level 10 case looks different which is kind of a breath of fresh air, but its pretty poorly built. the case is mainly plastic and the sata connectors on the hot swap are extremely easy to break, i broke 2 just trying to set it up. after i put everything in the case the plastic "handle" almost broke off when i tried to lift it. imo dont go with this case, i returned it within a week (luckily i bought it at microcenter so i was able to exchange right away). if you're looking for a nice full tower, I got the 800D instead and i really like it even tho it was slightly more expensive.
u can probably save a bit of money going with a p67 mobo, if your intentions are just overclocking a bit. no point in getting a z77 mobo if you're not going to be getting an ivy bridge processor.
psu isnt bad, i like corsair, imo good quality products.
i have that same exact vid card. very nice, upgraded from a 560 ti, after you buy it register the serial number with evga, their customer service is great.
i have a ocz vertex 3 which ive had no problems with, but i bought it a while after it came out on the market and had firmware upgrades to problems people were finding down the road. i believe the vertex 4 is a newer ssd, so my advice on that would be give it a bit more time see if people are having any popular bugs come up and shiz, then ocz will probably release firmware upgrades and you'll be good to go.

It's pretty much exactly what I have. 2500k, 670. The 670 is a ****ing monster (easy to OC too with evga brand), and my 2500k is sitting at 4.8ghz (on water - you should be able to get 4.5ghz on air really easily).
I would go with G.Skill Ripjaws X RAM though. I have 4x4 that I bought for $60 total last Black Friday (Black Friday is the best time of the year to buy PC parts imo, especially hard drives) and it's been great. No problems and they're cheaper than all of the other "good" manufacturers.
If you wanna mess with timing you could also go with the Samsung low profile 1.35V RAM. Long story short they're the best sticks out there and you can OC them and lower the timings more than any other stick with a comparable price. But it requires bios stuff and being comfortable with overclocking. (And yes you are supposed to buy the stuff that looks like it has worse timings than all the other ram sticks. It just looks slow because it's at 1.35V, but you pump it up to 1.5V and it will be blazing fast.)
In terms of Microcenter, I highly recommend them. I've used the MCs in Atlanta multiple times (that's where I got my 2500k). For CPU/Mobo combo you are looking at $40 less than Newegg on the CPU and a $50 discount on the motherboard. They'll probably give you the 3550k (Ive Bridge version of the 2500k) for $180 too, which is a slight upgrade over the 2500k.
I would go with MSI (easiest OC - solid) or Asus (rock solid) or Gigabyte (cheap but still solid) for the mobo, but a lot of people do swear by ASRock (they're an ASUS imitator iirc) so that should be ok. I usually try to stick right around $150 for a mobo, but Z77 do tend to be about $20-30 more expensive than the previous gen so you seem to have the right "tier" there.
Looks find to me overall.
But yea if you can find someone to carpool with or some other reason to go into the city you definitely should go to Microcenter to buy ****. It's fun the first time just to go. It's like a physical Newegg...
(And just keep in mind what I said about Black Friday - 2500k were $150 at Microcenter last year AND got you -$40 off a mobo, 3550k will probably have the same deal this year.)

Looking to get a pretty decent desktop for light gaming (skyrim, shogun 2, diablo 3 at high res etc) and some Autocad but without spending top dollar for the best of the best. This will be my first PC build, I have a HP pavillion dv7 laptop currently but the portability is off putting for studying as I end up in bed watching films instead and don't get anything done and gaming requires a desk anyway so a custom built desktop makes sense.
Any input/advice would be great on the below build. This setup is just through looking online at recommended pieces etc and comparing performace and price of rival parts.
CPU : Intel Core i7-2700K 3.50GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor
PSU : Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 750W V2 High Performance '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
MOBO : Asus P8Z77-V Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
GPU : Asus HD 7970 DirectCU II 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
SSD: Crucial RealSSD M4 256GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 32MB Cache
Would all the above items be compatible and prevent any bottlenecking? I don't want to buy the above and discover that I could have saved $200 with a cheaper GPU because my processor can't handle it etc. Also taking advice for a decent monitor and case that would fit all of the above. Any advice would be appreciated!

The items I chose were with price in mind as they have some discounts just now. For the sake of spending an extra £50 - £100 to get parts that are 20%+ better I don't mind, its the top tier items for £200 more for 10% more performance that I want to avoid as I just won't need that level of performance. The items I chose were with price in mind as they have some discounts just now. For the sake of spending an extra £50 - £100 to get parts that are 20%+ better I don't mind, its the top tier items for £200 more for 10% more performance that I want to avoid as I just won't need that level of performance. Ideally I want a build that will last at least 2 years before it needs upgrading.
ah, they seem top tier to me, lol
i guess there are more pricey CPUs and GPUs though
7970s are the most expensive radeon 7--- series, but one on newegg is $669 for some reason..
as far as cases go i like my fractal design but that might be a cheap one for your budget range. it has a simple look with lots of fan and cable options.

I have had a look at the 7950 series and they are about £100 cheaper so that will probably be the better route as I imagine the performance will be more than enough for my requirements anyway. Ideally I don't want to go over £1000 for this setup so I need to find the balance between performance and value.

An i5 and a 7950 would still have great performance.
I would guess even cheaper quad core amd would work but apparently they are not quite as strong as i5s.

Yeah, it's just for fun. I mean, having three screens is useful from programming and such, but I built it mainly for games and listening to music.
This is my hobby and I love technology, so once I started working I just focused on getting the craziest setup that I can afford :) I don't make much money at all, so I have to prioritize. Consequentially, I live in a tiny apartment (downtown Montreal, though) and I drive a cheap car, but it's worth it IMO.

When I first put it together, I was scared too LOL! I thought it was going to be bad, but it's actually alright! The Thor V2 is a really nice case, though, and it has a fan blowing on the cards from the side. They're only hitting a bit over 70C overclocked and at 100% GPU usage and 80% fan speed in Heaven 3.0, that's the first throttling point for Kepler. In games at 50% GPU they're running at around 60C.
As far as deciding what to spend the money on, my thought process was the following. I only use the car to drive to work though and the drive is 20 minutes each way. I can spend $15K on something that I use 40 minutes per day at most, or I can get a kick-ass PC that I use the rest of the time. Once I got everything built, I realized that I definitely made the right choice. The car can wait :)

HHHHHNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGG
How far did you overclock your gpu and cpu?
In that 3DMark11 run I had the CPU at 4.6GHz, GPUs at 1220MHz (max boost), and VRAM at 3557MHz. This is only for 2560x1440 runs, though. The video cards don't work well in Surround due to a driver issue, so I'm waiting for nVidia to fix it. Gonna redo the overclock at that point to see what's the max they can handle at 8064x1440.
As you may know, Ivy Bridge uses a TIM between the IHS and the die instead fluxless solder like Sandy Bridge. The result is that it runs a lot hotter when overclocked. I replaced the TIM on mine with Noctua NT-H1 (posted a DIY with photos on another forum, can PM link), but it didn't work well. I put Arctic Silver 5 and I'm pretty much getting same temps as with the stock TIM. I'm still waiting for the Liquid Ultra I ordered, looking forward to trying 4.7GHz or more when I get it.
Nice, using Noctua fans right? same I use. Mirin the dynaudio monitors, you into music production?

Keep in mind that you can just buy an HDD and swap it for an SSD yourself (you might lose the warranty, though). That's what I did with my MSI GT683. It's a gaming laptop, but it was the perfect base for my needs. I bought it for database simulation and swapped its 750GB HDD for two 240GB Intel 520's in RAID-0 since it has two drive bays (plus a DVD-ROM). They usually come with really nice and fast HDDs, too, so you can either sell it or put it into a portable eSATA/USB HDD case.
I second the comments about gaming laptops. At 8 lbs, this thing isn't really portable. I leave it at work during the week and only take it home with me on weekends. If you're planning on buying a laptop that you'll carry with you on a daily basis, forget about gaming laptops. You'll regret it. Get an Ultrabook instead, they usually come stock with a 128GB SSD an 4GB RAM and at 3lbs they're actually portable. Plus, being very thin you don't need a dedicated laptop bag. I suggest getting one that has a DisplayPort, so you can connect a 1440p/1600p screen, then it's really banging! :)

Not on the internet. Your download speeds are not dictated by fast cpu, gpu, and ram clock speeds found in most gaming computers. You will notice faster boot up times of your OS and other programs if you go with an SSD. If your unsatisfied with your internet speeds, having a highly clocked cpu or gpu won't help you dl faster.
My $200 netbook downloads youtube videos just as fast as my overclocked desktop.

You don't need much for 1080p playback, my 4 year old lenovo can do that fine. Any sandybridge or ivybridge with Intel HD 3000/4000 will handle 1080p fine. If you want to have that playback on an actual 1080p screen though then that Is going to cost a pretty penny.

1. Since your CPU model is no unlocked k version and you wont be overlcocking it, I suggest no.
2. Nope, nothng overkill,
since youre 500$ under your budget id just go all out, go with an Ivy Bridge K version, 3570k for example since you have an Ivy Bridge motherboard anyway and maybe an even better graphics card.
3. if you go with the 2600 you could get an Ivy Bridge processor as an upgrade later up, or go for a better gpu when this becomes too slow, both should last a while tho
if youre in the US Id go with newegg or microcenter

GPU: A GTX 670 is a better option for the same price on sale
PSU: if you can budget it, get a modular PSU. Whatever you do, do not buy the one you have chosen just because it's cheap, these can get loud, cause heat, and if they fail, will fry everything. Seasonic is very highly regarded for their PSUs

CPU Cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018 (these go on sale to ~$60 and are prius silent)
Case: this is a better option: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119213
Monitor: wait until a Dell 23" or 24" IPS goes on sale. They sell for $189-$240 on sale and are much better displays than TN panels. (This is ABSOLUTELY worth the extra money)
SSD: why did you not include an SSD? get an SSD. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227792

Graphics card is a monster, but grossly overpriced. I recommend this and it doesn't take up 3 I/O slots.

I would go with an i5 cpu if the rig you're building is mostly for games.

He probably didn't include an ssd since it's not essential to a pc build. A regular HDD will serve just as fine but will be a couple seconds slower on start up.

But with his budget it'd be easy to fit a 256gb+ SSD in.

i have samsung monitors, 27" and 23", which seem great so i'm going to recommend that brand. i got my 27" used from amazon about two years ago and have had no issues so that might be something to consider. newegg has a refurbed for $244 and this new for $279:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001551
but it is red, lol
honestly i'd rather spend ~half of what you are spending on a cpu and go with a bigger monitor.

I was thinking about replacing the HDD with an SSD altogether (don't care about storage too much). I'm not sure I can get one at a reasonable price over 128GB from a reputable brand. OCZ had a 256 for like 170 or maybe cheaper, but OCZ seems to have higher failure rights. Might grab a cheap 30 or 60 though to test drive the tech, though. In that case, if it breaks, it breaks.

Still unsure about the processor. I might overclock it in the future. Thanks for the tip on the GPU - if I do go with a 7950, does the difference in brand matter much? Something has to account for that price difference.
1. Since your CPU model is no unlocked k version and you wont be overlcocking it, I suggest no.
2. Nope, nothng overkill,

Is the Ivy Bridge really an upgrade? Read they overheat a lot - trying to avoid that. I'd rather get a solid CPU now so I don't need to upgrade in 2-3,
so might stick with the i7 2600k and get an unlocked version. Not sure if I'm being delusional and just throwing money away though.

Good info. Going to switch to that case, and thanks for the heads up on the PSU. Will do more research on those, and may end up going with yours.
I think I'm going to switch to upgrade to an HD 7970 instead. It looks like it keeps up to pace with the 670/680, and it also stays cooler when overclocked, and I'm betting the higher VRAM will pay off for heavily modded skyrim/future texture-heavy rpg's. Can get it for only $30 more than the 7950, too.
Since I'm new to building, temperature and durability are my prime concern. I know a bit about how they work from classes, but it isn't easy grokking all this nomenclature they tack on.

They do not "overheat" as such, they just get warmer than Sandy bridge CPUs, when overclocked. If you dont plan to do a ****load of videoediting, photoediting or 3D modeling and such, you will not use Hyperthreading even once, which is pretty much they only difference between i5 and i7, Id recommend you going with an i5 3570k. Its overkill for pretty much all games right now and you can get an aftermarket CPU cooler, which wont be quite the problem at your budget and overlock it to a solid 4Ghz without ANY heatproblems whatsoever.
I think, if you dont need Hyperthreading, def. go for the Ivy Bridge 3570K and invest the saved money in a SSD and GPU.
Also, if you have a microcenter near you, you can get it together with a motherboard for a huge discount, as stated multiple times troughout this thread

People say this all the time but never mention that you'll have to pay sales tax at a brick and mortar store, whereas you usually dont at newegg. Newegg generally will give you at least a $15 combo discount for a motherboard and CPU.

Any of you brahs use fan controllers? I just picked a NZXT Sentry Mesh up for my case fans and two of my fans make a clicking noise when they are between 40% and 100% speed. Pls halp.
fans maxing clicking noise: Bitfenix Spectre Pro 200mm & 230mm fluid dynamic bearing fans
fans working as intended: 2 Cooler Master 200mm sleeve fans & a Bitfenix Spectre Pro 140mm FDB fan
the NZXT Mesh has 30w per channel, which seems ok as the highest power draw on a fan is only ~5w

What is your CPU?
You will be fine, there is no significant advantage of having 4 dimms or RAM vs. 2 dimms other than those 4 dimms are certified to work together out of the box.

Does the CPU handle any load there alrdy? Because with the Intel Stock cooler my 3570k was at 44C, thatd be pretty high for a idle temp, wouldnt it?

As soon as the computer starts.. the CPU is doing something already. 44 is normal if it's the ****ty intel stock cooler. As long as it passed the beep test (POST) then you're good IMO.
