I went to the California Natural Nationals in La Jolla this weekend, just north of San Diego. This was a brand new show for southern California, and I really enjoyed it.
For starters, it had a great venue: The Museum of Contemporary Arts. Nice theater in the heart of La Jolla, great lighting, very clean. (I go to quite a few contests, and cleanliness is something I've learned to appreciate!)
The head judge/promoter/emcee Roy Perry did a great job keeping the audience informed about what was going on without being condescending. This is especially important during prejudging, where in many contests you're not even told what division you're watching. And I've never seen bodybuilders put through so many comparisons on stage before. They were being shuffled all over the place, everyone being compared to everyone else. It was a lot of work for the athletes I'm sure, but considering how hard they've worked to get to the contest, it's good to see them get that extra stage time.
Looking forward to promoters Mary Bell and Roy Perry doing more shows in SoCal.
