So to start things off, this maybe a long post with some background information and such just warning anyone if they read over it
I have done boxing on and off for 3 years (mostly off, school and work) in those years i went from just lifting weights to boxing to doing nothing I never had a balance, however, i felt my best when i was in boxing, enjoying the workouts, sparring, and the chances i had to compete but never did not once, so this time around I have got myself involved with the sport again and fully concentrated, I have done a template of some of the things i will be doing outside of the gym to keep up my conditioning. I will post them and also post notes about the workouts and what goes on in the boxing gym.
Before i post my sample workouts to make this journal legit, i have posted others in the past on this username and another (shrug_abuse) all in the pl section and although i have erased many, i still have videos but ill get back to that later
So some stats: im 5'9 and weigh around 160-165lbs
Best Mile time: 6:10, Best 5km time: 21:27
part of my conditioning includes road work (your basic runs) and track work
I run 5km on the days i dont have training, and i do track work on the weekends in the mornings.
Track work involves; sprints, timing my 1 mile times, running bleachers, jumps, etc.
the track work is used to help my VO2 Max, doing work within 5-6 minutes at maximal efforts, it also contributes to my road work as i time my 5km runs i would like to get to the point to where i can run and sprint it and get within 19-20 minutes
side note; where i live, weather in the 80-90s is very hot, and we are experiencing that, sometimes i have to put up with the heat, it sounds crazy, but our gym has no AC and getting used to the heat helps out huge, i also work 2 summer jobs and one of them im outside for 8 hours of the day so every little bit i do contributes
the gym will be closed next month, I will be running weekdays and track work weekends as much as i can, also, i have a punching bag i just started using that ill be trying to use 30 minutes a day or more, i also have weights and may do some conventional lifts and explosive lifts
So 2 weeks ago, i returned to my gym, basics, skipping, shadow boxing, bag drills, abs, etc
Last week: I went all 3x, everyday sparring, i even got a video i will post the link, i did okay for my first time sparring in 1.5 years but i also know what i need to work on
this week: the gym is open 4x a week b/c i think other gyms are coming down to do some work with us, see how that goes, pretty pumped better start training hard
before i post the link i forgot to mention i did some muay thai for 4-5 months and was consistant it was something new but i feel my best place is boxing
here is my link
www.youtube.com/jgrampz
you will notice and old boxing video of the double ended bag, i have got much better at it, however i wont be getting any videos of that soon, you will also notice some bench press videos when i did pling, but most importantly you will find my sparring video from a few days ago, so anyways, thanks to people who read this i will try and keep it updated as much as possible, i will make layout of my training for the upcoming months

so today
Bag work: 20 minutes, worked on simple 1-2s, moving in and out, several punch combinations
Boxing gym: skipping 3 rounds, double ended bag 2-3 rounds, sparring 2 rounds, nothing too hard

No heavy bag today but at the gym I worked on the double ended bag for several rounds, working head movement, punching, slipping, weaving and moving side to side and 3-5 punch combinations, went really well, maybe afterall i will get a new updated video of hitting the bag ill see
also worked on many rounds of shadow boxing, no sparring tonight, tomorrow some other clubs are supposed to make an appearance for sparring so if that is a go ill be at the gym sparring, would be a great experience to get a feel of how other clubs train and its pretty much similar to just getting into the ring for my first bout
next week ill be working afternoons, ill try and keep the journal updated on road work/track work and other stuff ill be working at

No training today i guess the the other club cancelled out on the sparring session that was supposed to be planned for this evening and since i just found that information out not too long ago i decided not to do nay road work/heavy bag work today
The gym will be closing at the end of this month which leaves me with few oppurtunities to go, ill be going tomorrow and then wont have a chance to go until the last week its open (i do shift work and next weeks shifts will cut into the hours of the boxing gym) so this means ill really have to get stricly into lots of road work and track work plus doing heavy bag drills at home. I am going to post a sample routine of what itll be like, considering i wont be able to go next week im going to try and accomplish as much of what im going about to post
Track Work: i enjoy this this part of training alot, its a good place to train, lots of open space, lots of intuitive ideas come into mind ( playgrounds, hills, bleachers, track, benches) so alot can be accomplished
im going to go either saturday or sunday and may decide to go on other days during the week as well while the season lasts (i can do road work anytime of the year)
so it will look like this
warm up: 1-2 laps, light tempo, making sure each lap is under 2 minutes, feel fluid, stretch, and then relax and walk one lap
Mile run test: 4 laps=one mile at the track, my best mile is 6:10 i want to get in the 5s even if it means i finish at 5:59
Sprints: this will work well with my mile runs and my 5km road work runs, im going to aim for 5x100m to start and gradually increase the volume over time, i will be also try to get myself used to sprinting when i do my mile test and 5km runs to help my conditioning and increase intensity
Stairs: there is a baseball diamond at the track and of course there are bleachers and stairs, ill be running the stairs probably 3-5x it takes roughly 2-3 mins to do it once my goal will be to keep it under 2 minutes once my conditioning gets stronger
Bleachers: foot hops 5 sets each foot then 5 sets for both feet, basically you hop on one foot up the bleachers and run down the stairs and hop back up again, if anyone was interested what this exercise was, its very tiring after doing all the above lol
Box Jump variant (optional): i will or will not be doing these, i dont know if this is the appropriate name for this exercise however, picture a square, and in each corner is a bench, i got curious to see if i can hop onto the top of one from a standing position (they are probably like 3 feet high maybe) so of course i did and then it made more sense that i can hop on one jump off and hop to the next immediately, so there you go, a nice finisher to all the work, no one uses these benches and they are quite strong so i may consider giving this an oppurtunity
other stuff (i can do occasional sprints up hills, use the play ground for dips and pullups and other interesting stuff, it all depends what i feel will be most valuable)
Road work: 5km runs im going to aim for 4-5x a week depending on how much track work i decide to do but these will be a must when there is no conflict in schedule, i figure if i can do more track work and increase the intensity/volume in those workouts, ill be able to increase the intensity of my 5km runs which is better for my conditioning
other stuff: i will of course be doing abs, body weight exercises, heavy bag drills everyday (maybe take a video of that sometime too just maybe) and some weights (such as powercleans, squats, single rep bench press speed bench, nothing too crazy)
and most importantly ill BOX when i get the chances to make it to the gym, and all going well i may have my first bout this fall if my coach can get me a fight that would be awesome ive been holding that off for too long
I know these workouts seem typical for maybe a runner, however, boxing is a sweet science, and if you put alot of heart into your training, especially outside of the gym, itll show in the ring and when you train and when you compete
so ya, another long post, more in depth of the program i made for myself, its still not concrete but once it gets going ill keep it posted as much as possible

Okay, so i went to the boxing gym and worked on the following:
Double end bag, various rounds, shadow boxing, and hand pads with a trainer all in all went good, i even managed to get 2 videos of me hitting the double ended for any interested, i was impressed with how well i did considering it was at the end of my workout and also, of all double ended bags i worked with, this one is the hardest because its the tension is very strong which makes it harder to hit
i wont be training tomorrow ill be working at both my jobs, im hoping to get some track work done on saturday and sunday and ill post those workouts and such
here are the links to my videos enjoy

How often do you spar?
Advanced_Bot
07-16-2010, 01:10 PM
about 2-3x a week, the boxing gym is open 3x a week in the summer then 4x once september comes around, i only can make boxing so many times a week because of school and work but im doing the best i can
ps the only reason why i sparred just 1x this week is because the other boxers have fights this week and one just is coming off a fight so they had to take it easier

so today was half track work/road work
i went to the track with the intentions to run my one mile only but since it was so nice out i also did 5km and that was my warmup for my mile run, i ended up getting 6.16.97 so i am closer and closer to my old record and soon enough will reach a new one
id like to go back tomorrow probably do another mile run and then do some stairs etc, so overall good effort especailly since i havent got alot of sleep (working midnights at one job and in the evening at the other) and considering the 5km run, i really just wanted to test my endurance and itll only get better

07-18-2010, 08:46 PM
it was kinda busy at the track, alot of events going in and around the park needless to say with the little time i had i got some work in
1 mile: 6:14.25 getting so close to my goal, i remember like 2 or 3 weeks ago when i started retraining for the mile i was in the 6:30s im confident if i strategize and do what i thought of trying i could get my goal 5:59 or less, when i get to the last stretch of each lap, say last 50-100m, if i could sprint it off and maintain a strong pace i could probably cut a good 20 seconds off, im going tomorrow to try it
stairs: i timed myself it takes me 2.38 or 39 to do one lap of these, although a bit tired getting around 2 minutes or less will still be a good challenge

I did about 5km today i wanted to hit the bag and do some powercleans after my shift i was way too drained to do anything, i plan to get up early and do my one mile again, if anyone asks why i do my one mile so much i figured to myself that an amateur bout here is typically 2 3 min rounds or 3 2 min rounds, making the match 6 minutes. If i did my best mile at 6.10 and say i get in the 5s it tells me that i have been getting stronger at each lap and overall getting better, take the fight for example, its 6 minutes of stop and go action with the little breaks between rounds, as the fight goes on, or in this case the mile run, you want to appear still in good condition and able to continue, i made my goal of surpassing my record and getting in the 5s because i know then i can handle a 6 minute bout, i know they are different but when im doing these runs i go at a good pace and then a strong pace almost sprint then back to normal so its almost like a bout when you start off with a couple lead jabs and then go into combination punching and then back to the same old, thats how i see the mile run and its benefits for me

Update
Last tuesday i didnt do any track work, reason being when i went to do my mile run i felt pain in my feet and that was a good indicator that it was time to get some new shoes, i had some under armour trainers that lasted a good few months and i know that type is not typically used for running but they were light and had good stability, i just over used them thats all, anyways i got a new pair of kicks from nike, these are even more comfortable, extemely light and wider which is good because i got wide feet so ya i put them to the test yesterday and just a little while ago
yesterday i did my mile run, i ended up getting 6.11.81 my record is 6.10 i could of have beaten it if i speeded up a bit i probably also could of got in the 5's but each run i am getting closer and closer i remember a few weeks back when i started doing this run again i was getting in the 6:30s, i just have to pace myself better because i can do the first 2 laps in about 2:55 and i know my last lap is pretty good but its right after the half point i slow down just enough that i dont totally notice but it takes up alot
i was going to do the mile run again but instead i did a 5km temp run, whats funny is even though i was just doing the run at a good pace i can handle, i decided to time this run to see where i am and sure enough i ended up with a real good time for my self of 22.19.62
i wasnt even trying to go for anything special i had taken my time, what i like about this run is that my last km was quicker than my first one and also i wasnt completely gased when i got back, im almost certain if i had the mindset to beat my old record of 21.27 i could of but thats okay, getting the time i got at a comfortable pace is a good sign im getting in better shape thats whats most important me
also, i have avoided doing a couple things, bag work etc, i think itll be best to start when boxing is done next week, its hard to do a little extra when i dont got much time in the day because im always working, not to mention where i work is at a steel factory and im outside in the heat 8 hours of the day working with steel so that is a huge factor to my training for sure, i never let to make complaints but usually when i say im going to do stuff in training programs i create, i follow them, however there has been a lack of some of the things i said i would do but i guess its better to realize you could only do so much if you got tons of other things going on, anyways, ill keep this journal updated as much as possible, im pumped for next week as its the last week of boxing, hopefully get lots of training in before the season is over

No training yesterday because of the weather, i did a 5km run today that was just at a comfortable speed, finished at 23:47:34 i had no intentions of running overly hard im wondering though when im going to actually try and get a new record could be in the next couple weeks or even sooner considering i got boxing next week and then its closed for a month i may make the runs more brutal by setting a standard to finish them at a cut off time of 22:30 or less, again it seems like everything in this journal is all about running and so far most of it has, i think once boxing is done next week ill focus more on longer workouts and more conditioning, i like the idea of sprints, the mile test 5km runs and bag drills i got set up, but i also thought of other ideas involving weight training and possibly combining somethings together (eg. powercleans 10 explosive reps followed by 50 fast punches, for say 4 sets, or even lunges or squats 20-25 reps followed by 10 reps of 5 combination punches on the bag) being creative in this aspect gives me alot of ideas and i think making a routine mixing them up into one workout will be worth the go i was thinking of something like this that i could do tomorrow which is a possibility

5km run: 22.02.97 however probably just less than 22 minutes because at the half point i usually loop around and cross to the other side of the road, it would make about a 5 second difference maybe but ya i was very impressed with this time, i still havent tried to beat my record yet, i am just running at this pace comfortably and achieving a very good time for me which means when i eventually push myself who knows what i can get, not to mention running the 5km where i live, is much harder than anywhere else ive ran, its not a practical 5km but its a good training ground to become a stronger runner (you run on different surfaces, dirt, road, stone, never consistant) the roads are never linear, there are some wide turns, alot of little inclines and uphill running, when its hot out, like it has been, you have the sun beaming on you for majority of the time there is nothing that really blocks any sun out eg.buildings, and if its windy you sometimes have to fight that off, when i would normally run say 1.5 miles at the track like i used to, i would get in the mid 9s, i know that when im almost at 2.5km which is about 100m more than 1.5mile my time is usually around 1045-1115 that is over a minute more than what i can regularly do 1.5 miles in, im thinking that if i want to try and do my true 5km time maybe ill try it on the track but i love the challenge of trying to get good times out here and im glad my conditioning is getting better even though i havent done too much yet
i also tried a little bit of weight training with the punching bag
hangcleans: 135x10+ 50 fast punches, 30 sec-1 min break and repeat for a total of 3 sets
it was very good, i didnt do too much because i havent lifted in along time but now doing this i can event my own unique training, i figured for example, i can do those 3 sets and get them done under about 2-3 minutes, making it sport specific, i would call that round 1, and repeat it for 3-4 rounds, and move on to other exercises, i have alot of thoughts about this new type of training im coming up with and expect me to probably type up a real weight training/boxing conditioning routine thatll be perfect for its context

Boxing gym:
4-5 rounds of double end bag, 4-5 rounds of shadow boxing, 3 rounds working with a partner, practised blocking jabs, 1-2s and body shots, heavy bag for 3 rounds practised body shots, bending, moving, etc then moved onto floor work doing abs and such
i may or may not go for an early run it depends what time i get up, i got boxing tomorrow so i will keep the journal updated for what happens

Yesterdays Boxing
4-5 rounds double ended bag, 3-4 rounds shadow boxing, worked with a partner for a few rounds on blocking, slipping, etc, heavy bag 3-4 rounds, heavy bag drills (with a partner) work speed 15 seconds, quick break, repeat, for 5 times, head and body 4 times, 4 punches in and out 4 times, and then power 4 times, floor work and that was all
i got to start planning runs again, tomorrow is the last day for the boxing gym then its up to me to continue my conditioning

Okay so heres a little update
Thursday: Last day of boxing was good i did about 5 rounds of the double ended bag, 3-4 rounds of shadow boxing i focused alot on uppercuts, short powerful punches, and pivoting off, heavy bag 3-4 rounds, and then with the coach i did 2 rounds of hand pads, he really focused on my in fighting, with alot of uppercuts and hooks, short straight punches and long straight punches, he was impressed overall with my hand speed, power, and said my balance was very solid that even if i say missed one of my hooks on the hand pads i wouldnt go off balance considering i was throwing them fast and powerful, when i go back to the gym ill be in school again and depending on schedule im going to try and go as much as possible, i maybe fighting this year and any chance i can go ill be there not to mention i will also be training outside of the gym as i am now
So far today i had a solid 5km run, the best one ive to date and this year, i havent done much other road work or track work in the last week as i said i was going to focus on the last 3 days of boxing so for what i did today im impressed, given the fact it was my second best 5km run ever at 21:35:44 which i definately could of beat my old record but its not an upset that i didnt its actually telling me im in better shape than ever because every 5km run has been getting easier and much quicker, not to mention i have a consistant pace i just have to be a little stronger on the way back and i could probably cut a good 20-30 seconds off, i guess the reason i didnt beat my old time today is because im not in the proper mind set of beating it, i mean itll be great if i did beat it in training but my focus is to keep pushing myself and when i know ive been consistant in training and getting better ill set a date to go out and beat it and thats when i would like to beat it more than just a couple seconds so far now ill just be doing my runs and get back into track work too which i feel has helped me alot for pacing for sure, and just get myself into great shape
I may do a part 2 of my workout today i want to focus on the inside fighting on the bag, combined with some weight training/endurance drills on the heavy bag, if i do i will post it up
Advanced_Bot
07-31-2010, 10:48 PM
Okay, so an hour after my run i did a little bit of lifting combined with the heavy bag to help me make a conclusion and heres what i attempted
so for round one: my goal was to do a set of hang cleans (135x10) and then 50 fast punches with another set of hang cleans and 50 punches again, the goal was to get it less than 2 minutes, i got it in about 1:45 or so
round two: i wanted to see how many reps i can get of my own weight (160) i did 5 although i could of probably pushed 10 i felt a little weakened from the previous set and just did what i could because i havent rly lifted weights in a consistant routine for months, after the 5 i did 50 fast punches and i did that within 45 seconds
round three: i did push press reps of 135x10 followed by 100 fast punches and got that just under one minute, i know this isnt a whole lot but it has offered me many ideas on how to set up a progressive 4 week routine to spark up my speed, power, endurance and overall cardio, in a creative way anyways
heavy bag: 15 minutes, non stop, working on the inside, short powerful punches, 4-5 punch combinations, etc, was good
i like combining the 2 together for a workout that is short and explosive and i made it sport specific so that i have to force myself to finish something within a limited time (like simulating a round in boxing) i have thought out the exercises that will be used for the majority of the program with specific reasoning of my own
hangcleans/powercleans/push presses: it is an overall body exercise that allows you to exert explosive power to complete a single lift, the movements/mechanics of these lifts use muscles that benefits the boxer; not only do you have to bend at the knees but you also have to explode using the hips in an upright position and to squat back down to catch the bar, in boxing you are constantly bending, coming up again, bending, moving etc, this lift will help with overall body conditioning, ability to bend at the knees faster, explode up, and a major key point, ability to use more power driving with the hips, that is why i prefer these lifts, on top of it, itll keep the body and core strong
squats: strengthen the legs, get used to going down and coming back up, another accessory lift similar to the above, strong legs with the ability to be agile fast and powerful give you that KO power
other: i may use some bench (maximal effort, sets of 10 and possibly speed bench) ill through in some stuff for tris and back, a little bit of conventional lifts but nothing too crazy
either tomorrow or monday ill type out a 4 week routine, itll focus on 4 stages of conditioning that i made up (and have used in similar routines but for different goals)
Week 1: Conditioning Stage: example, ill focus on 2 or 3 rounds of weight circuits and heavy bag training, 5km runs will have a cut off time of 22:30 or 22 havent decided yet, track work, to actually focus on sprints, stairs, and work on the one mile getting around 6:30 or less
Week 2: Intermediate Stage: increase volume for rounds and duration possibly, maybe add more rounds, etc, make 5km runs more intense, 21:45 possible cut off time, keep focus on track work, etc
Week 3: Advanced Stage: increase volume for rounds but keep duration at 2 mins (i think on the second week id keep the rounds 3 minutes but increase the volume from the first week most likely) intense 5km runs again, etc
Week 4: Fighter Stage: i will make tests to assess my overall fitness such as mile run test 5km test and other tests i feel are needed
i also want to add abs, and body weight exercises, with the weight training, ill divide the rounds by power, endurance, and speed , this is a great idea id come up with and id like to keep it updated as much as possible

08-01-2010, 04:33 PM
so, i figured that i had a great run yesterday with the 5km, why not try and do one more mile run test before i start a new program monday, and thats what i did and..
PR!!!!!
its been such a long while since i got a personal best in any fitness category (weight training, running, sprinting etc) and i am most pleased because i shattered my old record of 6:10
i just started doing this mile run for the last month i started out at around 6:30ish after such a long lay off, i kept getting closer and closer my last current record was 6:11 but its nothing compared to the 5:57:69 i just achieved today im very happy with this and now my next goal will be 5:45
ps ill keep this journal posted with the start of week one of the new program i created
Advanced_Bot
08-02-2010, 01:23 PM
Okay so today i started my program and i wanted to see how things would workout
5km run: just under 25 minutes, my timing was way off today as far as pace goes, i underestimated the heat and the wind i was running into the whole time, it definately cut my time huge, i should have taken into consideration that alot of my 5km run times maybe inconsistant because of how im feeling, previous training, weather conditions or a mix of both, although far from being a good run, im glad i finished it knowing ill have to better prep myself before running (i did this run about half hourish after getting up, also i had small bit of food in me, nothing close to a meal but still)
part 2: speed/endurance (goal is to hangclean 135x10 + 50 fast punches 2x n under 2 mins)
Round 1: finished in 1:45
Round 2: finished in 1:53
Round 3: finished in 1:48
next i worked on the heavy bag for 15 mins straight, worked on inside fighting close in the pocket
I had a minute to finish Round after all the above was completed
in one minute i was to push press 135x10+100 punches under 1 minute and i got 55 seconds
overall great workout, i felt pretty gased after all this and im still thinking of doing some skipping later today with some body exercises before my midnight shift, anyways i said i would post more of the routine up today i have been busy havent got around to it, if not tonight tomorrow should have the remainder of the week up

08-02-2010, 07:19 PM
my above post doesnt make alot of sense hahah i typed it too fast before i had to go into work, ill explain more thoroughly about my run
it was hot, windy, and i did the run going into wind and it really slowed me down and the heat just got to me badly, usually the heat is something i can handle okay but today it just owned me, im starting to think if i should try running 5km on the track to see what i can get, i also figure by doing a 5km run on a track every once in a while will help me work on my pace and i focus on say running 6:30 miles or less (i read somewhere that pro boxers run about 6 min miles and that would be a sick goal to attain) if i run at home again im considering either very early runs or later runs in the evening when its cooler out and more relaxed, ill still do the odd runs in the heat but i got to take into consideration i work out side in the heat 8 hours a day in a factory so i need some sort of break from the heat once in a while
i just finished the last part of my workout today as well
skipping: 5 minutes
shadow boxing: 2 minutes (just to stay loose)
body exercise circuit: 50 crunches, 25 squat jumps, 50 leg raises, 50 pushups and 25 burpees completed in 4:30
ive had a total workout today and i think this is stuff thatll work, i havent decided fully whats next for tomorrow ive oppurtunities to do alot of stuff, if i go to the track to run 5km and do another weight circuit, or train my 1 mile in which i have a great strategy for that as well or do my weight circuit, heavy bag stuff and body weight stuff during the afternoon and my 5km run in the evening, ill have to see and keep it posted
in my first week itll be something like this that ill be working on
5km runs: aim is to try and get 22-22:30 mins or less
1 mile training: run quarter miles at 1:25 or less, jog one lap and do another quarter mile until 4 laps of each are done and then just run a mile in say 6:30 or so
track work other than the mile: sprints of 100mx5, stairs, etc, i have another place around my house where there are some nice hills i can work on sprinting uphill etc, although i dont know the distance it takes to run to those hills i can also get some good cardio in that part too but this is just a maybe
weight circuits: im going to run it as speed, power, endurance, using the hangclean, powerclean and push press, as you seen how i did it the above with the 3 rounds, this week is all 3 rounds with 2 minute cut off, so therefore must complete the workload under the given time to be successful, i eventually will increase weight and volume, heavy bag will stay at 15 mins this week and move up to 20 next week, accessory weight training exercises will be posted when i decide to do them and use them appropriately
hope this helps, itll make more sense as the workouts continue

08-03-2010, 02:48 PM
Part 1 of todays workout, i did my own little weight training circuit, worked on some explosive power but mostly endurance
warmup (simple stuff) i wanted to do a little bit of bench press nothing over the top because i have not really done bench press in a while but i just wanted to test a weight that i can do a respectable amount of reps in and i had an idea
worked up to 185x12 (not bad considering im 160lbs train in boxing and have not lifted in ages, i used to be able to rep 225x15 easily but those were in my pling days but i will say only doing reps of 185 to me isnt bad because im not training for strength but if i had a goal to maintain a certain weight on the bench it be nice to get a single or more of 250 but its not of great importance now, its just nice to have that bit of power while boxing)
okay anyways here is the circuit i created, you have 4 exercises (a full clean to press all one motion similar to an olympic snatch just minus squatting under the bar, barbell rows, squat jumps, and standing military press) i used 95lbs of weight and each exercise you must complete 15 reps, go to the heavy bag and work on the following combination (go in fast with 5 quick and powerful straight punches and then out, repeat this 10 times and then proceed to next exercise and so on)
so to make it more clear for anyone interested
full clean to press one motion (95lbs)x15, 5 fast punches in and out for 50 punch total
barbell rows 95lbsx15, 5 fast punches in and out for 50 punch total
squat jumps 95lbsx15, 5 fast punches in and out for 50 punch total
standing strict military press 95lbsx15, 5 fast punches in and out for 50 punch total
i completed the circuit in 6:30, i had a quick break and finished with 40 hard punches
so in total all the reps completed=300, 240 punches, 60 reps with weight exercises
after this i worked on close grip bench very light, 95lbsx25 then speed bench 95 lbs 4 sets of 3
i proceed onto the heavy bag for 15 minutes, later today i plan to go out for a run and then do some light skipping maybe a small bit of shadow boxing and body exercises again

Part 2 of todays workout
5km run: 22:10:62 much better than yesterday, i did my run in the evening, although its humid out, only thing that was a little struggle was the wind and my theory was correct, my time on the way there was slower on the way back, on the way back i had no wind against me what so ever and i could find a better pace, i know running is unpredictable and there are alot of factors that can effect running but i try to maximize my time without having to worry about elements that over exhaust me because my 5km route that i run is already challenging with many turns some uphill running, etc, its great to train youre running for sure
skipping: 5 minutes, shadow boxing 2 minutes
body exercise circuit: 50 crunches, 50 leg raises, 25 knee tucks, 25 clap pushups, i took my time transitioning from each exercise but i finished it in 2:50
overall great workout today, i think tomorrow ill train my power, and hopefully get a 5km run in, got a busy schedule tomorrow and itll be tough to squeeze it all in

Update
last 3 days (wednesday thursday and today of course) i have not been able to run, it was way too hot outside and besides i working both my jobs, midnights at one then evenings at the other, although i really wanted to run ill be going for one tomorrow for sure and next week ill be less busy and be running as much as i can get in, i also bought a sick book that has alot of knowledge on running that ill be reading into, i just really want to be in great shape and well conditioned for my fights ill be having later on
yesterday i did workout, i did a strength/endurance/speed circuit in one, i like these quick explosive workouts i created, and i can tell they are working i feel a little more explosive and the exercises i did yesterday were a little tougher than the ones i did for my last 3 round circuit
so i started like this
Bench Press: 135x5, 185x1, 205x1, 225x1, 235x1 (oh i can get 250 soon, ill just be patient, maybe)
hang clean and press: 135x10 reps (pretty positive it was 10), 40 hard punchesx2 sets in 1:45
Powercleans: 155x5, 40 hard punchesx2 sets in 1:53
Powerclean to press: 135x10, 120 hard punches in 1:55
Heavy Bag: 15 minutes, working in and out, combinations etc
i want to get in a solid workout tomorrow, and hopefully sunday get some intense track work in and start my next conditioning stage (which i may take 2 weeks to do instead of one) with the possibility of adding hills into my training schedule

Update
Saturday: 5km in 22:25
Today: 5km in 22:21
i had a perfect pace going today it looked promising, at half point i was around 10:30 on the way back i slowed right down the humidity was too much, i think i have to re evaluate my running strategies and only run for time on certain days like when it gets cooler out, i might just start running much longer distances at a more relaxed pace and still do track work, i would of done so much more this weekend but i was too busy worked both jobs and had to help shovel stone, very exhausted, i want to do another timed 5km run however i want to try at the track and see what kind of difference there is, i know i record my times quite a bit but i feel for me to be in the best condition i set myself goals to achieve and when i reach them i know my fitness level is getting better and it will all transfer to the boxing ring anyways tomorrow id like to get into weights if i can and start getting back into heavy bag work and such

part 1 of todays workout consisted of..
not running 5km around the track, i felt more moivated to do track work and work on some simple speed because ive neglected it for over a week so i had a quick change in mind and missed the 5km timed track run for the quarter mile intervals
i did 4x400m timed laps, after each lap i walked one, my goal was to get 1:25 average for 4 laps and this was the outcome
Lap 1: 1:19
Lap 2: 1:24
Lap 3: 1:27
Lap 4: 1:21
an average of 1:25 lap would put me at a 5:40 mile (my goal is to get a 5:45 mile but training these laps to add up less than 5:45 builds my confidence towards running the mile sometime again) with these laps it totals a 5:31 mile which is great, it doesnt mean i could get this time if i ran 4 laps consecutively but by building up a pace lap by lap will help me aim for an average when i do attempt another one mile test, my average for these 4 laps is around 1:22-1:23 which is good, i figure if i did 4 hard laps i can probably reach my goal but ill give it sometime, hopefully after work tonight ill get some weights in

08-11-2010, 08:34 PM
No part 2 of yesterdays workout, came home from work and crashed for like 10 hours, i did lift weights today but extremely low volume considering i havent done too much lately, i started the day off with timing my one mile, not looking for a personal best but to seek maintenance in which i did i got my second best time of 6:08
Bench Press: 185 3x10, i just wanted to check if i can rep out 185 which is ok with me
Heavy Bag: 10 minutes, easy, in and out, combinations and son
Im going to break my cardio into different style now, ill do speed work 1-2x per week which consists of running quarter miles at a hard pace, im going to start running slow long distances such as 10km (going to start with 7.5 because i dont think ive ever done more if so i dont think ive done 10 or more) and maybe do hills 1-2x per week, all this with the current weight training strategy i had before should really help my conditioning i just have to commit to it, since last week i did an okay amount of workouts and this week so far a little less, these 2 weeks will be the conditioning stage and the next week will be a little tougher hopefully because before i know it the boxing gym is open again, next month i have a school placement that runs from mon-thurs, and the shifts are days 8-4 and afternoons 4-12 so i can box every saturday for sure, and every other week i can make the classes on mon tues and thurs and the week im on afternoons ill focus alot on heavy bag work etc same stuff im doing now for conditioning
and oh, i weighed myself the other day i been floating around 157-158 lightest i been this year

Update
Ill be honest i did little to 0 weight training this week, i managed my schedule incorrectly, most days i slept in and left only time to do cardio or weights but i would always pick my runs over weight training circuits, to make it fair i really got to push myself to do circuits at least 3 if not 4 times a week and starting monday to hit my bag for at least 20 minutes, i think even though i lacked weight training, my body will handle circuits with a little more intensity i feel my conditioning has slightly increased so therefore i feel i can handle more volume, on a more positive note i decided to give 10km a shot, i never ran such a distance and didnt know what to expect i ran it thursday and got a time of 54.40 i had taken my sweet time and it was blistering hot out, i ran it saturday and got 49.30 i had a better pace and was looking for a pace i could handle, i think its safe to say that once this heat is gone or i find a cooler day i could get 10km in 45 minutes
so tomorrow i may run another 10km, going to have a cheat meal, and back to it monday and to make sure i do some weight circuits, bag work, skipping, body weight exercises etc, i also bought a heart rate monitor watch, good to know what training range im in, i tested it tonight just for my resting heart rate and it was pretty accurate ranging around 48 beats per min (ive had it tested around that a few times before) so ill be sure to have full use of it

08-16-2010, 08:36 PM
so today i did a 5km run at the track finished around 22:22, I actually had the intentions of doing 10km but as i did my laps i felt that 5k would be reasonable considering i had a massive cheat meal yesterday and yes it hindered me a bit in my run but i honestly think if i focused on running these laps for a good time i had the potential to get maybe just less than 20 or so, anyways i did some easy lifting and heavy bag work
Heavy Bag: 20 minutes, fast punches, worked alot of jabs, 4-5 punch combinations, in fighting, body shots, worked it all basically
Bench Press: 185x1, 205x8 (i was curious if i could do nay reps at 205 at all and to my suprise i still can)
i did a circuit that i finished in 2:10 but technically less than 2 minutes i did an extra rep on 1 or 2 of the exercises i was doing because i wanted to make sure i wasnt fully fatigued and could still push myself a little more
Hangcleans: 135x10+40 punches on bag
Barbell Rows: 135x10+40 punches on bag
Push Press: 135x10+40 punches on bag
lights abs
good stuff to get back into the mix of things im thinking of a 10k run tomorrow on top of some weights and maybe ill do some hills if not thatll be thursday, wednesday i plan to do some speed work at the track see what happens

So today i managed to get a BIG PR OH YES!
i ran 10km in 44:50:36 i was very impressed with myself for sticking with the run and maintaining a good consistant pace the whole way through the first 5km was barely under 22 minutes and the last was about 22:50, it was perfect temprature this evening, nice and cool, im more impressed because it was my third time doing 10km, ive had 4-5 hours sleep (i was going to do it at around 5:15am but i fell back asleep and had work for 7 and worked 8 hours) so this has answered some questions; i can run long distance for sure, i can maintain my pace, i am still improving my conditioning, another thing i should note, i checked my heart rate at just over 1km and it read 168, after i finished the run i was at 188, i would say thats pretty accurate and the fact i could train at 80-90% of my max heart rate for a length of time is good news because in boxing i know when i have my first fight there will be tension and nerves and adrenaline kicking in heart rate will probably be up in that range, anyways i know i was supposed to do some light weights and hit the heavy bag but with an impressive PR i worked hard for ill give myself the break

Update
since last time i did the 10km i went onto some track work and regular runs something like this if i remember correctly
speed work: 4 laps hard 4 laps jogging and 4.5 laps recovery i did the 4 laps in intervals: 1:18, 1:26, 1:26, annd 1:24 i completed the quarter miles in that time with jogging in between
10km with a friend i did in about 49 mins 40 seconds or so, it was just a recovery, easy pace run
6km run: not timed, another recovery run
5km run: 21:38 i didnt feel in the best condition, was a great run but i proved to myself today that i was right about yesterdays run because i got a new PR that crushed my old record
5km run today was done in 20 mins 43 seconds, a new PR im impressed, although i have missed alot of my weight circuit sessions ( i think ive decided to wait until boxing opens up next month) im impressed with my cardio, itll be very good for the boxing season coming up and maybe then ill add some more variety, i knew that i was going to run into troubles with weight training and cardio this summer because of how busy i am, i valued my cardio more though i really felt that the importance of running was more beneficial now so i can peak my fitness just before boxing starts and begin a new cycle to work around school and such to build up an even stronger cardio base and hopefully ill keep pushing the bar

Its been a long time since ive updated this log, truth is im still training, the gym re opened on the 7th and i been working hard, sparred only a few times, proved i can handle 3 rounds of 3 minutes no problem (considering the last 1-2 weeks before sparring i had eaten pretty bad and went from 155 to almost 165) conditioning is getting better and looking better overall, i got my physical done my book should come in around 2-3 weeks so i can start competing, this month is going to be a tough one my coach said i can probably get a fight in november so i got to buckle down anyways im not going to go through all the training ove done this month but i havent done too much road work just focusing on what i do in the gym next month ill work harder now that i think im comfortable managing school and 2 jobs so ill try and keep this posted

Okay, so last week the gym was open on mon tues and thurs closed on sat, on monday i warmed up and sparred for 3 2 minutes rounds went really well, i was nice and relaxed and landed some good punches/combinatons, im starting to progress more, last 2 days i basically had a few rounds of skipping, running, double end bag, hand pads, heavy bag and floor work, since i maybe fighting soon i been utilizing my heavy bag at home, 20 minutes a day i work on speed, power, combinations, bending, and pivoting, maybe ill get a small video of myself hitting my bag im interested i know for a fact my punches are much more technical and when i hit the bag i always have a purpose, back when i trained i was stiff and i didnt work the bag properly, now im working like a boxer should, thinking about my punches, bending, throwing from all angles, alternating speed and power, pivoting, not looking as stiff as i used to when i first started, i used to train like a brawler but my coaches have been saying i like more like a boxer, i stay busy in rounds, good movement and i set up my big punches which i still like to throw, power punching is just something i have but more controlled, anyways i wont be training this week because im on afternoons, but ill be running 5km going to try to lift weights 2-3x a week and continue hitting my bag

alright, so last week for 5 days straight i hit the bag for 20 minutes, worked on conditioning, body shots, combinations etc
this week at the gym
monday worked on conditioning, double end bag, skipping, running, worked with this boxer who came back and hes turning pro, just worked on basic slipping and blocking
tuesday, worked on the double ended bag, shadow boxing, and then sparred 3 rounds, 2 with the boxer from monday, btw hes turning pro so for now on ill just label him as pro when i post here, i had my last round with another pro and my results between 3 rounds were excellent, chin was down, relaxed, i did better movement and didnt get hit that much and landed a couple good shots it was good work getting much better
yesterday i hit the double ended bag for various rounds, some shadow boxing, many rounds of bag work and then we had drills on the bag and work, i honestly thought i would have sparred yesterday however i didnt know there were some boxers from another club that were coming and these boxers were set up with 2 others from our club so they did sparring but it was entertaining to watch between rounds i cant wait to spar other boxers from other clubs or have a fight which is coming
speaking of fighting i might have a bout at the end of novemember or beginning of december so my first fight is coming up, the one in december would be a club show and that was always something i wanted to be a part of and i may get the oppurtunity
im going to maximize my training, im going to join a gym again, i tried lifting weights at home and doing cardio outdoors but it hasnt been working, i dont want to take a risk injuring my joints or getting really sick from running in the cold, like i have before, so im going to play it safer and have get back into a gym to lift moderately and do lots of cardio on the days im not boxing, im also going to work my bag at home and continue to do so about everyday that i can, the more i hit the bag and work it the more technical ive been getting and the more output ive had in sparring and other gym work, anyways ill keep it posted and i will make an effort to update this journal more often

Okay, so i will summarize my week of training
Monday: warmed up with double ended bag, skipping and shadow boxing
i sparred a guy who is turning pro, he is my age and has had tons of amateur fights, hes also 165 right now and is really great to have as a friend and training partner (since ill be fighting at 165) he is shorter than me and a great inside fighter with enormous punching power and really fast, anyways i did 3 rounds with him and good enough for me i was pretty tired at the pace we had going, ive sparred him many times in the past and he just made his return back to the gym not long ago he commented on my progress and said im looking really good and i should be ready to fight anytime now
on tuesday: worked in pairs and practised working to the body and countering right back after rolling with the punches, i also did my usual warm ups and some hand pads before this, we finished with floor exercises
on thursday: i warmed up with my usual stuff, there wasnt many people in the gym but they did have this one pro who is shorter than i am but hes only about 130 at the moment, regardless, another guy and myself got to do 2 rounds with him, the rounds i think were 3 minutes. i did great on both rounds, mind you he is alot smaller than i am i didnt use tons of punching power but i was patient and used counter punching to my advantage and i been enjoying that style of fighting lately, after countering for a little bit then i look to go inside and just box, but i like being able to work on both styles, its funny when i started boxing i never tried to be a counter puncher but now it seems to have helped me out and to help with defense to i just need to work more on footwork a little bit and i think ill have found my suited boxing style
anyways that is all, ill be at the gym this week lifting weights and doing lots of cardio, saturday ill be at the boxing gym, i maybe fighting in november ill keep that info posted up

hahah ya! as much as i respect MMA/other styles, ill always be a boxer guy just what i was used to watching (and playing video games) growing up
i am at a gym this week working on conditioning, ill be at the boxing gym saturday, so any workout from now until then is going to be weights, cardio and using my heavy bag at home
so i havent did much lifting lately so heres what i did in the limited time i had
Bench: 135x5, 185x1, 205x1, 225x1, 235x1 i feel as if i could do more, i wont get much into lifting heavy but i just did this for power, 185x12, 165x21.... lol i didnt think id get more than 15 after doing those sets
Powerclean and press: 135x10
wide grip pullups x10, close grip x15
abs
cardio: on the treadmill i do 1 min of 6mhp then 7mph and 8mhp, after those 3 minutes i do a 6 minute mile (10mhp) and then drop down back to 6mph and work back up to a 6 minute mile again, i did this cycle 2x and i managed to do 3.15 miles in 21:20 minutes, great workout
heavy bag: 20 minutes, i want to get a video soon enough maybe tomorrow ill get one

Hey, I havent posted here in a while, yet again, i have reasons though, i had alot of tests and such, i sitll trained quite a bit though, last week 2 of the 4x i was only supposed to train once but i had a shift change for my placement, this week ive trained 3x and these sessions dont include the few times i hit up the weight room
as far as weights, keeping it minimum, i can db press 90sx10, shoulders 70s, clean and press 135 for reps no problems, im keeping basic exercises and may fill in more plyometrics since the gym floor exercises are big on that and we do them often
this week i sparred everyday so far, monday i did 3 2 minute rounds with a different guy every round, tuesday i did 2 3 minute rounds i think just with one guy and yesterday we had the corner of the ring roped off and we did body sparring of 1 minute intervals, i did 3 rounds and did really good
as far as conditioning goes, we did a contest, 10 exercises 10 reps for each 5 times over, so a total of 500 reps and we got timed i finished first at 20:32, it includes, fast mountain climbing, pushups, kosac, squat jumps, slow mountain climbing, lunges, squat thrusts, dirty dog, burpees
also got myself new boxing shoes, there pretty nice going to enjoy them and oh i destroyed my camera so i wont be taking videos anytime soon, kinda sucks but its okay it wasnt doing very good especially last few times i tried taking pictures and such

So this weekend was great for training, yesterday i sparred 3 3 minute rounds, thats the first week in a while where every training session had sparring, today i went to the gym and lifted weights, cardio and heavy bag at home
Bench Press: 135x5 or 6, 185x1, 205x1, 225x1, 235x1, 240x1, 250x1 i will count the 250x1 i had it no problems but my form went off a bit, i had got more confidence after doing 235 because i plowed through 240 i may have got 250 easily and maybe 255 but anyways only time im doing bench is just for power
DB Bench: 90sx6 (bench press tired me out), 85sx8, 80sx11 no problem
Powerclean and Press: 135 2x10
Powerclean: 165x5, i could of got more felt nice and smooth
Forearms
Pullups: wide grip 2x10, close grip 2x10
Abs
Cardio: 2 6 minute miles, finished my run at 3.15 miles exactly 20 minutes, worked out to a 6.20 minute mile which ill use as a benchmark when i train on the treadmill
Heavy Bag: 21 minutes, had very few breaks to kind of stretch it out and breathe, worked really well, high punch count, mixed speed and power, looking good, im looking to buy another pair of bag gloves, i trained with my 16oz ones today, my 12oz ones are getting ruined so id like to grab another pair of bag gloves will do so tomorrow when i go to the boxing gym, overall this was a great workout, need more like these when i dont have boxing, i may still have a chance to fight this year so i got to make sure, well always make sure, that i can remain as a powerful 165 pounder with great cardio and ensure my boxing skills are top notch, that means bag work as much as i can, always 110% at boxing and i may possibly get a mirror for doing some shadow boxing on top of all that must watch what i eat since holidays are coming up and the gym will be closed for a little

so i have my updates again lol im not doing my best when it comes to updating and i think the reality is that when im done this semester and when holidays are near or almost over itll be much easier to quit putting the updates aside and post them, im currently finishing my placement at school and getting ready for finals and such so i often put this aside, honest as i can be lol, i been training thought, its going to suck because this saturday and next saturday are the next times ill be in the gym partly because im finishing my last 2 weeks of afternoons at my placement, after that ill be hitting up the gym as much as possible and with second semester ill probably be training all 4x a week, speaking of next year, mid January we are supposed to have a club show ill likely be competing in my first fight, and come February we will be entering a tournament ill likely be competing in which is awesome, another side note, i got a new camera and i got a new video
i got back into running outdoors again i dont know, a smuch as treadmills have some practical use, i like the elements and challenge of outdoor running, as much as high winds can frustrate me it helps my overall conditioning, i have a video of me hitting my punching bag after doing a 5km run, its not my best work on the heavy bag but its enough to make it on here, only problem i have with the video, i had a couple looping hooks, not many, and my hands can be a tad higher but in sparring ive kept them high, other than that its a decent video, good movement, good speed, good power but not my hardest hitting, and i think i counted around 220 punches in a 3 minute round which isnt so bad either, here it is, enjoy

Im back again, i finally completed a huge part of my schooling so next semester will be much more relaxing, ill be able to train all 4 days a week that the gym is open on which is good because we are prepping for a big amateur tournament in february, as far as updates go, i still been training, i did good sparring the last couple days to be honest i havent updated this log because ive done alot of thinking as far as a routine goes, i tried lifting weights with boxing but it doesnt work out the greatest so i considered to look into something else that i never trained in but always wanted to and that would be plyometrics, i purchased a nice book and im going to incorporate some movements, next year im going to create a nice routine with plyos for explosive power and conditioning along with running and of course boxing technique and sparring and all i got to do is find some cheap equipment and get started up, anyways ill update this log during the last week of training which is next week then i will try to post a routine for the new years prepping for whats coming up

So this is probably my last post of the year as the gym is closed after tonight until the 3rd, i ended up training all of last week and last night, last week a good fighter came to the gym (hes on his winter break from school) and i sparred him on monday and tuesday and yesterday, he has had i think over 60 amateur bouts not to mention he has got bigger so i had the chance to spare another bigger guy (not too many people in my gym are heavier than me) so it was good experience, next year ill be fighting and there are 2 tournaments ill be competing in (one is in February and another in April) ill be making a much stronger committment to the journal once i get back into the gym next year and ill be training very hard

So its back to training time and its 100% guarantee that ill be fighting in a tournament February 4-6th i will train as hard as i can to do my best
I have to start doing roadwork again, i did 5km on saturday to see how i feel, ill get back into it easy it was a tough run because ill admit i ate alot these holidays im suprised im not over 170 anyways i did some bag work that same day and then i trained today as well
i got to the gym early to warm up
3 rounds of the double ended bag
various rounds of shadow boxing
2-3 rounds of skipping, 2 runs of running
more shadow boxing
bag work with partners, the coach has us work with on a bag up to 2-3ppl, we do 10 seconds of the drill, switch, and repeat until he calls time, usually we do the drill 4x in the round, we started with speed, worked on power shots to the body and the last was speed and body combined
2 rounds of sprinting
floor work
excellent work today i gave it 110%, i need to slowly add some plyometrics to my training, ill start some this week and add more as the weeks go see how my body reacts, my coach says i have a really good boxer style, meaning im good fighting on the outside, i have great speed and a great jab, i also have really good power but he wants to see me fight on the inside as well so i figured if i do some plyos i can try to be even more dynamic and explosive with my boxing and be able to fight effectively in and out
thats all for now ill post up after tomorrows session, going to keep this log up much more than what i did last year

I felt so sore today, first day back was more than i expected but today was even tougher and i was okay with that
i did a simple 5km run today, i think ill stick to doing just 5ks, not timing them but in about a weeks time im going to do some sprints through out the run for something different for once, then again i got to make sure its not overly cold outside or ice everywhere but hopefully not
i went to the gym early trained from 5:45-7:45
i started with my 3 rounds on the double ended bag, worked on various rounds of shadow boxing including about 2 in the ring
i did about 4 rounds of pad work, did all sorts of combinations worked up a sweat then.....
3 rounds of sparring with a pro, i did excellent, i felt i could go more rounds easily, only thing is i wasnt as ballistic as i would like to because i was so sore but that wont be a factor next time because my conditioning comes back quick
floor work
and that was all for todays boxing session

Ok so today, started out with a simple 5km run, had work and other things today but after that i got into bag work
15 minutes on the bag, working on speed and combinations
after that i did the following in 1 minute rounds
speed, body, power, 4 punches in then out, speed
went onto doing simple plyos nothing crazy
with a 3kg medicine ball i started doing throws+catchesx10, 10 squat jumps, 10 alternating lunges, 10 squats and 10 scoops
i finished off with abs using the medicine ball

a simple workout today, 15 mins on the bag, worked primarily on speed, i balanced out the first week of training by having some tough sessions and light sessions so that way i can gauge my conditioning and now the next week of training (monday) i will have to intensify everything and make sure that i give it 110%

Yesterday was awesome
i went to the gym, warmed up, and sparred a pro, instead of 3 2 minute rounds which is what novices compete at, i did 3 3 minute rounds
i had a cool fighters/boxers moment today, just before the end of the 1st round i caught a really good one straight on the nose, now my nose never bleeds hardly ever and if it does its like a small drizzle and it doesnt drip at all, this shot i thought for sure my nose was broken but to my suprise it wasnt, in seconds it was dripping like crazy and i went and continued on but during the breaks between rounds when my coach tried cleaning some of it off, eye of the tiger was playing, was epic, he also asked me if i was still good to go (last round, during most of the 2nd i had blood all over and was running into my mouth) and of course i wouldnt back down so i finished the last round and my coach said it was one of the best sparring ive had yet, him and another fighter (shes pro as well) said my boxing was really smooth, nice straight punches and uppercuts, much more controlled so that was nice
so it is 100% official that my first fight is going to be between feb 4th-6th as my coach registered me for an amateur novice tournament, i knew i was going to be in this tournament for about 2 months but now that im listed on the boxing ontarios official site as a competitor i have adrenaline everyday, im back in school this week and im only working weekends which means im hitting up the gym all 4x a week to prepare, also i made a big decision, i dont think ill be doing any road work with the weather as cold and icy as it is im not taking a risk for injury or some crazy cold, i love road work but i dont want to risk tripping or falling or anything crazy so instead im going to do some hard HIIT sessions on the treadmill, ive had success with that training before so it should be good, first session is tomorrow morning/afternoon then i got boxing around 545ish (fighters start at 6:30 but ill show up early to get a good stretch) so pumped!

Yesterday, no HIIT session, i felt so drained in the morning and after school i had to go home and get some sleep before boxing
monday: warmed up with the usual, little bit of skipping, shadow boxing and double ended bag, had 2 3 minute rounds of sparring, one with a pro and another with a novice, finished with a 10 minute run
Today: very tough, i did a HIIT session, warmed up for 5 min, had a jogging speed of 8mph and did my sprints at 10mph for 30 seconds on and off, after 5 min of that i increased the sprint interval up by.5 until i finished at a jogging speed of 8 and a sprinting speed of 11, was good
Boxing: got there, warmed up, skipped, ran for 9-10 minutes, 2-3 rounds of hand pads, 3 2 minute rounds of sparring against a fighter who weighed 185 (has 20 pounds on me) i already felt tired and i feel that doing the HIIT session earlier in the day may have drained me more than i thought so i got to figure if i should do those seperate and just keep a nice controlled run when i got boxing the same day anyways after sparring did a 10 minute run then some intense continous floor work right after that i weighed in with my jogging pants i was exactly 165 which is good because thats the weight im fighting at
overall i wish i was a little fresher in sparring, it was good, sparring heavier opponents is very tiring especially when i tried fighting more on the inside used alot of energy up, big shots from the both of us landed and itll only boosts my confidence more for when i fight a guy that is my weight i wont have no problem going toe to toe if the fight gets close on the inside, so overall tough day but good work was put in, i was tired going into the 3rd round but i pushed myself hard and put forth a good effort

I forgot to mention i finished last night with 15 mins on the bag, nothing intense i felt pretty sore
today i feel the same but i managed to get a run in at the gym, no HIIT training, i think ill only do them 2-3x a week or something, i did have a pretty nice tempo run though, i managed to do 3.15 miles at 9mph which i finished in 21:07
i got boxing tomorrow and saturday, hope to get some more sparring in, going to need lots of rest and then back to the grind next week, training is getting tough but i am getting better

Yesterday was pretty good, parts of my taining i felt a little off, probably because we have been going strong since the end of the break and lots of sparring and oter stuff had me a bit unfocused but i still did what i can, next time ill be recovered and bring it back to my normal level
i got there, did about 4 rounds of shadow boxing in the ring, skipped 2-3 rounds, ran for 10 minutes or so, got onto the heavy bag for 4-5 rounds, 3 of those rounds i worked on inside punches last 2 rounds a mix of both, then i had sparring, i did 4 rounds, 3 which were 2 minute and one which was about 1min20sec with a newer guy, all the guys i sparred were novices which is a good change so i now have worked with just about everybody in the gym

I have posted videos through out this journal, only one which was a sparring video however i recently removed it off youtube, it was 7 months old and my first time back in the ring in nearly 1.5 years, major ring rust, other videos i got on here are double ended bag training (improved in that area) and bag work
i go to the gym tomorrow morning and that is a more practical day to take any videos because not alot of people show up and its not busy, if i get a chance (that is if some i can spar shows up) ill take a video, if not, well 110% will have a video of my first fight which is in 3 weeks
if anyone is curious about the tournament im competing in check out
www.boxingontario.com and then look for Brampton Cup (Feb 4th, 5th and 6th) view entries and look under the category Male Novice Elite, in the weight category 69-75kg, my club is Niagara Falls Boxing Club you will find my name there
today as far as training goes, i had gym class and the teacher made it a fairly nice workout for us, we had the shuttle test running (highschools and college do this test as part of physical fitness testing) and we had a group of 5, each person is to run to the other side to the beep, then the next and so on, we ended up doing the entire test (20th stage) and if you dont know what the beep test is, basically its a 20 metre shuttle run, pylons are set up 20 metres apart and you have to run to the pylons before there is another beep, and once you make it to the other side you wait for the beep, and thats that, anyways after that i continued to work on the treadmill i did speed 10mph for 6 mins and 10 seconds and that was my cardio session

So i brought my camera with me to the boxing gym, i wasnt too sure if many people would show up because the weather and the roads are garbage but to my suprise i had sparring partners
i warmed up skipping, shadow boxing and some light foot work drills and got ready
i sparred another novice for a 2min round and the pro i usually spar for 2 2min rounds, went well overall, im uploading just one of the videos and waiting on it at the moment

Ok so the video upload is complete, i like this video alot because its not a crazy sparring session i had alot more control, good movement however, i need improvement working on the inside, you will see i got a little frustrated once or twice in the pocket, that guy im sparring though he is avery good inside fighter, hes had over 40 amateur bouts and 9 pro fights so i just have to remember who im in there with, overall it was good, i used more long ranging punches, not as many uppercuts and hooks and i didnt go to the body like i normally try to against him, i think i threw one punch and it just made contact, if i kept the other video from the summer you could see huge improvements but i didnt keep it on youtube, anyways, enjoy it

Had another good day of training today, i showed up early, around 530-545, i hit the double ended bag for 2-3 rounds, shadow boxed in the ring for 3 rounds, did another round or so of the double ended, skipped 2-3 rounds and ran for about 10 mins
got all wrapped up and shadow boxed in the mirror for 3-4 rounds and then got ready to spar
i did 4 2 minute rounds with 2 other novices, it was a good test of cardio, i would spar one guy then he would get a good 4 min rest and so on and i getting the usual minute rest between rounds, so they were fresh each time in as i got battered down a little but my coach was happy with the results so its all good

I had a bit of a tough go today, i didnt get a whole lot of sleep and i thoguht i could get away with a decent cardio session hours before i had boxing, not a good idea lol
i did 20 mins on the tread, 5mins at 7.0mph and 7.5 then 5 mins at 9.0mph and 9.5 it felt okay but in reality it hindered me in boxing, i got to boxing a little late because of class so my warmup was a light 10-12 min run and very little shadow boxing if any at all
i did 3 2 min rounds but i felt exhausted, i mean you cant always be 110% in training but i got my rounds in which counts, i wasnt too light on my feet today and i felt it in my legs, i talked to my trainers, i guess its similar to prepping for a marathon i got to taper my training accordingly, they told me roadwork/treadmill is good for days when i dont box and that makes sense in all, i have never had to train for a fight so the next couple days ill probably just post about my bag work and cardio on my off days, the time to fight is less than 3 weeks and i got to make sure i dont overtrain which i feel i may have a little but tomorrow ill take off and when boxing is open on thursday ill make sure i got good sleep and eat good so i can maximize my time training
i have been at boxing everytime but once this year so that makes up 9 training sessions i have been to, ive trained boxing for roughly 18 hours (just totalling the time spent at training sessions, not including cardio or anything else) i have sparred 25 rounds and those rounds total to a time of 54 min and 20 sec
i got alot more sparring coming up and i guess its fair to say im just going to focus on the training in the gym, some cardio sessions and the bag work i do at home, i said i was going to do all this HIIT training and plyos but that was me not knowing the intensity of training for a fight between school and work lol so ill just stick to whats working best because honestly when i dont do any of that other stuff i do better in boxing anyways so i got to prevent over training before my fight so enough of that, better days will come and thats boxing is all about, making a comeback and strong

Okay, yesterday i had gym class and we had to run that shuttle run test, i didnt know what i was going to get i havent ran the full thing since earlier last year, needless to say i got stage 10.5 higher than i expected, if i only knew i could higher than stage 10 and had my confidence up i probably would of tried to get past stage 11 but regardless, now that i know i got to 10.5 comfortably ill aim for 11+ (12 would be pretty sweet, maybe by the end of the term ill get it)
I had boxing today, got to the gym warmed up, did some footwork drills then sparred 2 3 min rounds with the same pro that i sparred last saturday who is also the same guy in the video i posted last saturday, i have one more full week of sparring and then the monday leading up to the tournament ill find out who im fighting, that week will be all technical work which will be a good change of pace, i am up 30 rounds now ill probably break just over 40 by the end of next week and ill have a bit of time to recover from all of that, so later today ill do some bagwork, i wont post up on it, going to work on alot of speed and movement around the bag and maybe add some power in the last minute or something

A good session today
I got to the boxing gym 15 minutes early, warmed up on the double ended bag, skipping 2-3 rounds and running 2-3 rounds, worked on some basic shadow boxing and then did some intense drills on the bag (included rounds of speed, combinations, head and body and power) after those rounds went into sparring, did 3 straight rounds at 2 minutes after that finished off with a quick run
good stuff overall, coach was really impressed and hes so sure that im ready to go and i cant wait for my first boxing bout

Another good session today, i remember last tuesday i was so drained and my sparring didnt go too well, i turned that around today and had one of my best days yet
i got to the gym early as usual, same routine, double ended bag, skipping, running and then the bigger guys got to spar first tonight
i did my first round with a pro, focused primarily on footwork and pumping the jab
second round was against another guy who weighed 185-190, focused on footwork, jabbing, side to side and countering, did well again
last round was against the same pro from the first round, he came out more aggressive, i got a little tired during the round but i kep pumping the jab and throwing my left hand and maintained great footwork, my one coach said it was the best 3 rounds he has seen of me yet so i was happy
2 more days of sparring then all technical work next week, the fight is coming and i cannot wait its so close, 10 days and the tournament starts
and oh, all rounds were 2 mins of course

So today marked the last day of sparring, i got to the gym with my usual warmups, got into sparring, 2 easy rounds of 2 min each, im glad to say all my partners and coaches have recognized my improvements and they know and i know im ready to go, next week is all technical work, im really going to taper down, smooth runs, focus on technique, eat as best and as clean as possible and thats that, i weighed in at 165 this morning and about 166.5 on the gyms scale (obvious difference because of what i ate during the day and such) it should be no problem being 165lbs the day of my fight which i will find out monday
this saturday my coach is going to bring one of the pro fighters to the buffalo to go spar, im going to take that saturday morning off and just sleep in, i cant wait for next week ill finally have my first ammy boxing match, going to record it all, if i keep winning of course ill record those bouts as well, there is 15 guys in my weight class there is a good chance i can fight up to 3x which is exciting, im going in and giving it my all

This is a good log. None of this "Im gonna fight UFC how r my stats" BS
Only thing I'd say is that your jab looked a little arm punchy occasionally when you double, and you're coming up and into your straight without getting any pop into it. Plenty of movement, looked good.

I warmed up a little on the double ended bag, 2 rounds skipping and running, did 4 rounds of shadow boxing, 2 of which were in the ring, 4 rounds of bag work, and then 3-4 rounds of pad work, after that i tried on a pair of trunks and a tank top, it felt awesome wearing the gear it just gives me that much more certainty that ill be fighting and that i made it to the level to compete as an amateur boxer

So I havent posted this week Ill have to update what happened last week
I had a great experience at the tournament, i fought first on the friday, fights were to start at 7pm, they had 2 rings going and i was supposed to be fight 12 in the first ring, well something was wrong with the dimensions of the first ring so it was inactive for long period of the night, instead of fighting at say 9pm i didnt get in the ring until like 1030ish, not to mention when they got it ready i was warming up for a few mins then suddenly we were up i got dragged into the ring immediately, which was good cus it cut my nerves out right away and soon as i got in the ring the nerves left me
I fought a great fight, although i lost, my coaches and other coaches and people thought i got robbed big time, it is a novice tournament after all and there are novice judges who judge fights for the first time, my coache warned me about that too that if they arent using computer scoring there can be sloppy judging and there was, some bad decisions were going on in other fights too, im not going to complain because i learned alot in the fight, im going to list some criticisms of the match
First thing: the head gear was a pain in the ass, you can see i had to adjust it like in my corner and during the fight, especially in the third round (my worst round) where i got punches to the side of the my gear which kept shifting it all over
Next thing: the way they score rounds, by total punches landed, means you can dominate for 2 rounds and be up say like 4 or 5 punches but in the nxt round if they make a small comeback and beat you that round and got their total punches say one point above you, then you lose, it kind of sucks because in this fight i clearly won 2 rounds, i landed cleaner shots in the centre of the ring, my coach said alot of the punches he threw, some were looping, that hid ethe side of my head would not be considered scoring blows either, i didnt get hit much, only the last round and thats where ill give him credit, i got gased in the last round, his coaches must of told him he was loosing because he came out swinging, also the coaches were quick to give people a standing 8 count, they dont count for nothing as far as scoring goes but i got one because i took 1 clean shot along the ropes, lol none of the shots i took in that fight phazed me at all, i actually should of got a knockdown because just before the end of the first round i rocked him with an uppercut and he fell back into the ropes and just got his balance
criticims on myself: okay so its my first fight, sometimes you forget things in sparring, i wish i kept my hands higher, although its my first time using 10oz gloves which were significantly smaller than 16oz, i wish when i got on the ropes i slipped under to the side like i normall do in training, i had an adrenaline some of my technique was flawed, i wish i tucked my chin a little more, near the end of the second and especially third, sometimes when i threw my left cross my left foot came forward, as a result of being tired, what i need to learn is to my pace myself better, as far as my first fight, understanding that i am only a NOVICE meaning you can still learn alot, i will work on these in practise and so far ive already made improvements, ive learned alot from this fight and next fight will be that much better, speaking of which i maybe fighting in March

Update:
so im back into training again, ill just go briefly about last week, i did alot of pad work with the coach and a guy who is turning pro, looked alot better than before, i think the positive mental affects of getting the first fight out of the way has made me feel more confident and better at boxing which has been showing, a guy came down on the weekend, hes been boxing at the club for years, over 60 fights, and now is 190lbs, i did 4 rounds with him, great inside work, great for cardio and all
today i warmed up, few laps of running, 2 rounds of shadow boxing, 1 round in the ring, then i got ready to spar the same guy i did pads with last week, hes 165-170 like me, has over 50 fights, turning pro, hits like a truck seriously
i did 3 rounds with him, was upposed to be done but i pushed my conditioning and went 1 more, let me tell you i wont need to do abs for a while, alot of body shots (hes shorter and excellent on the inside) but im glad i did another round, pushed myself and did well in the ring, all i got to start doing is creating a structured plan
ive honestly had the hardest time sticking to a structured plan like i was say summertime, alot of school work is getting in the way on top of work, however the nice weather is coming back soon, i am definately going back to road work and will do my best at creating a routine, its not like im slacking off not at all, i just need to go by a schedule so that i can do some other conditioning outside of boxing so i can commit to that way i can be balanced itll encourage me to eat cleaner than i have, other than that no complaints, because im going to be working hard in the gym and improving from here and get more fights lined up

Yeah, I can see the jitters, but it's your first fight. You straight up drubbed him for two rounds before the jitters caught up with you. Props for getting in there.
You did a good job of keeping him outside and fighting tall. Might've wanted to clinch him the few times he did get in, like in the second when he pinned you to the ropes.
The worst thing I saw was a distressing tendency to paw from overhead with your jab and leave your chin out. The first thing will be fixed on the pads, the second on the pads and just plain with more experience. An outboxer has to have a solid jab to work behind.
Good match, and it sound like you learned from it.

Hey man, thanks for checking out the video, ya I had some good jitters, sitting around waiting almost 3 and half plus hours to fight, i did notice the pawing and having my chin exposed, i forgot some basics, like bending the knees, getting in around the side, but those things happen when your a novice and my best part of the fight is that i got in there to box and i left it all in the ring, i did get tired but i didnt leave any excess energy behind, ive already did better last few days between sparring and hand pads and again thanks for the positive comments
today was basic, worked on the double ended bag, skipped, ran, shadow boxed, did 3 3 min rounds in the ring chassing a guy, no real hard contact, just having some novice guys work lihtly in the ring, get them used to the feeling of being in the ring and another major factor that being against a south paw, after that we did 3 rounds of sprints and floor work
so far no notice about the fight on march 5th however my coach really wants to a plan a club show at the end of march, i hope he does because i can fight in my hometown and would bring as many people to watch as i can
i think starting march or so, road work and possibly track work will be back into action, for now i may just do light treadmill work and get back into heavy bag work, need to focus on technique and such!

I didnt get much sleep last night, so my saturday morning session went a little sluggish but thats okay because we didnt do sparring and the drills we did do I had enough focus, i wouldnt say i had an off day entirely rather just low energy lol
I got there, some double ended bag training with 2-3 rounds of skipping and running, did 1 round of footwork drills on the ladder, a few rounds of shadow boxing, then did some bag drills, got in the ring and worked with partners in the corner of the ring, blocking and slipping, then i think we did some more bag drills, speed and power, followed by 2 rounds of sprints finished with floor work, any mental notes i made were tailored towards my wrist, i feel my bag gloves, which were inexpensive, have went past their use and i may have to upgrade to osmething much more expensive but more practical, worn out bag gloves just means risk for injury and thats not happening lol, other than that, I have purchased some white flood and i got a shipment of muscle speed from bb.com (first time ordering from this site) coming my way, so i am going to maximize my training, also i still have a chance to fight on the 5th of March and my coach is really considering a club show march 27, pumped up, especially if i get to fight at our gym in our ring! that will be sick!

Yesterday:
I bought some new bag gloves by rival boxing, 10oz bag gloves, all leather double strap, nice and comfortable, and will be suitable for training because we use 10oz gloves in bouts, im going to be doing alot of work with them and getting more comfortable
i did my usual warm ups, 3-4 rounds of pad work, little bit of bag work, skipping, running, some shadow boxing, and then did 3 rounds of sparring, i felt sluggsih during sparring, almost a lack of energy, and it seemed like i couldnt see the punches or calculate them like i normally do but regardless my one coach said i maintaied very good footwork and did very well i think my problem was taking white flood, 2 scoops or so, i felt like my arms were rubbery and that my relfexes were off and my coordination wasnt on point, not making complaints but got to make sure i dont feel like garbage before going in, none the less i knew soemthing wasnt right i made the best of the rounds and im pleased with it
my new bag gloves, probably the best pair i have, and i got them for a little cheaper at the gym

So today, i ended up taking it a little easy, no sparring, i think my weakness from tuesday was coming from an impending cold that i was unaware of, today i feel a little sick, migraines, feeling a little weak and soreness in some of my leg and back muscles, its nothing severe but i didnt want to take a chance getting in the ring and furthering an injury that can be avoided, i didnt go too hard on my workout today but enough to keep it safe and simple
pad work, worked on technique and slipping, worked on avoiding the right cross by stepping back and coming in with the left or stepping back and to the side quickly (if i just step to the side without backing up well we worked on slipping and blocking the hook) so more technical stuff, did some work on combinations and such but mostly movement
shadow boxing 1-2 rounds then ran for 3 rounds, back to shadow boxing in the ring for 2-3 rounds and then another 2-3 rounds in the mirror, i did some light bag work and floor work to finish off
i dont get sick that often and usually when i do its short lived, i think it came from a result of heavy work on the weekend (in a restaurant) and probably got a bit of a common cold, other than that ill relax not do much activity, hopefully saturday morning ill be good for training/sparring again, i got my reading week next week, going to get back into 5km runs and hitting my heavy bag in my basement

Monday
So i got to the gym early, im up in weight like 167-168ish, its not alot but that weight didnt come from good sources unfortunately, lol, so today i made sure to get in my workout, its going to be the start of a start of a new month so i can begin running, eating clean and training hard, today i just made sure to push myself through 2 classes as a reminder i got alot of training to get back to, i understand after a fight its okay to relax a couple days maybe had a week off, the good thing is i was optimistic, got back into the gym training, but i didnt eat good and didnt do no other form of cardio so i need to get myself back into fighting shape as our club show is on the 27th
today i did various rounds of the double ended bag, skipping, running, 3 rounds of handpads, more shadow boxing in the mirror and the ring, worked with a partner for 3-4 rounds, did various rounds of some intense bag work drills, alot of body work and doing a 4 punch combination, fast sharp punches, couldnt tell you how many rounds we did but my arms wee like jello after, then did some floor work to finish off the session
my supplement that i ordered from bb.com has arrived today, so far if i had to give it a rating out of 10 it would score a 10+ for odour, geez i think cat **** has more of a pleasant odour than the contents of this bottle, however, i did take 1 pill, i felt a good dose of energy, ill need to take a higher dosage for boxing (which is okay according to its recommended usage) which is fine because i generally have a high tolerance for energy supplements, so ill test out for the next couple of weeks, anyways, i may get a video tomorrow of handpads or double ended bag work ill see what goes on at the gym

I had good day today regardless of the fact im just shaking off a cold, feel congested and a little weak but i did alright, i started my day off with a 5km run, it was awesome getting back on the road doing simple roadwork it will fair well for when it comes fight time
i got to the gym, did some warming up on the double ended bag, skipped, ran, shadow boxed and then got into sparring, i probably could of done a few rounds (i only did 2 3min rounds) but to be safe because of being sick and feeling a little weak my coaches know im feeling a little sick they cut it to just 2 rounds, it was good i felt like my combinations were coming together, landed a few good body shots and my right hook was landing well which has been a punch i have not thrown as much as i should, so all is well, going to train hard
on another good note, my coach has a guy for me for our club show on march 27th, all we know is that he has 1 fight like myself and the gym he comes from has a good reputation and my coach says hes good to work with, so its time to train really hard and get in the best shape i can at 165lbs
no videos tonight, i really wanted to get one, i was thinking of getting one for sparring but id rather get one when i dont have this lingering cold, id like to get videos of handpads, double ended bag and maybe bag work, i sitll may do some bag work tonight but probably wont record it but its all good ill get some stuff on video when i can

Easy training day
5km jog: i dont think ill be timing these for a while especially since its still fairly cold out and the wind is pretty bad however, it was a nice resistance type run, for more than half the run i had the freezing wind against me and you can feel that burning your lungs and having a hard time running forward at a strong pace, so that was kind of cool
Bag work: 15 mins, simple, worked on combinations, straight punches and body punches, wil have to make it more challenging after another week or so

Today was excellent
5km jog, nice and smooth, went well, weather wasnt too bad not like yesterday
Boxing:
Got there early, had a light warm up, worked on handpads for a good 3 rounds, skipped, ran, shadow boxed, basically worked on technical stuff, then i did 3 3 minute rounds with a guy who weighs the same as me who is turning pro this year, he definately has that pro style, hitshard, goes on the inside, great pressure, reads you well and all other things too, im proud i had the cardio and lasted all 3 rounds and i dont think our breaks in between rounds were very long, for alot of people lasting more than 2 rounds with this guy means your doing well, punishing body shots and goes right back to the top, tons of pressure, but ya, went really well today, looking to do a 5km jog and bag work with abs tomorrow and then saturday hopefully get some sparring in with another pro boxer

Firday: ran 5km, hit the bag for about 10 minutes i was rushed for time because i slept in late
Saturday: Boxing gym was closed, i did 3 3 min rounds on the bag, recorded 2 of the rounds and kept 1, i dont know if ill upload or not
Cant wait to get back in the gym Monday and keep working on stuff

So today i weighed myself in the morning was about 164
i made an attempt to go to the gym today to lift weights, it didnt take long for me to figure out that im not really into lifting weights like i used to be say 3 years back, i know its primarily because of boxing and if i got into lifting weights id want to see major strength gains return but it will obviously conflict with my weight and boxing however, while im still in school and the gym is up the street i may keep to a very light weightlifting schedule to keep it in tact, it was very discouraging to realise that i really did loose tons of strength and i know that if you dont lift heavy in years youll loose lots well that was a major realization today let me tell you lol and i didnt rly do anything i just know if my major/best lift was weak all else would follow it
Bench Press: 135x1, 185, 205, 215, 225 (stopped here, i could probably do at least 235-245 and probably would go up if i started lifting again, i felt my hand hurting a bit so i stopped, whats funny is i used to get 225x15 wheni weighed just over 170 and lifted consitantly)
powercleans: 135x1, 145x1, 155x1, 165x1
thats all for lifting lol, did a 3.15 mile run on the treadmill, which i dont think ill be using again just not the same as road work
Boxing: was good, skipped, ran, shadow boxed, worked in pairs, intense bag drills and floor work, so its a guarantee, our boxing club got its sanctioning from our governing body (boxing ontario) and our club show is official, 27th of march, and i got an opponent who just fought on saturday (its the same club show my coach tried to get me into but the guy ill be fighting was already matched up) looking forward to my fight going to train really hard to make it a great bout

Good one today
5km jog, went smooth, can feel a bit of my running fitness coming back which is nice, im thinking saturday that if it remains nice outside, i may take a drive to the track and checks its condition, may do some track work if i can
Boxing:
3 rounds hand pads, a bit of shadow boxing, ran, then the big guys were first to spar
sparred the guy turning pro, our rounds are 3 3min rounds and breaks are only 30 seconds, let me tell you, 3 very tough rounds, i was getting tired at the end but i still managed to throw punches and they were landing, my coaches were happy with how i made it through, it was tough work but its only making my condition that much better
double end bag work, 1-2 rounds, could barely keep my hands up lol thats how intense those rounds were, finished with some solid floor work
looking to run another 5km hopefully, and prob sqeeze in some bag work as well, training is looking solid

Yetserday i was fairly tired and it was cold and rainy so no road work and i didnt do any bag work either
But today i paid for that and i worked hard
I recorded a 5km run, i need to start doing a heavy/good tempo run at least once a week, its getting nicer out and today was perfect, although still a little muggy, not too bad for rain, i went out in jogging pants a shirt and sweater, plus an hour to an hour and half earlier i ate a big bowl of pasta and had a big glass of water, i weighed 165lbs in the morning so i was probably around 170lbs during this run
i finished it in 22.31 which was very good, considering my weight, i was averaging 22 or less in the summer weighing around 154-155lbs, im probably able to get under 22 soon
At the gym, got there early, 3 rounds of handpads, working on combinations and technical stuff, then 3 3 min rounds on the heavy bag, the one coach watching my technique, then 1-2 rounds of skipping and some running, i got right into sparring after that and believe me my shoulders were stiff, i was already sort of tired but sparring went well regardless
3 3 min rounds w/30 second break against a pro, whose shorter than i am and weighs 130, constant pressure, body attack is strong and is a tough kid in general, although i had some good weight on him he sometimes spars a more experienced 165lber in our gym for 8 3 min rounds, so this was just more work for him, i did really well considering i was tired and coaches were pleased, these sparring sessions are really going to prepare me for a high paced fight at 3 2min roudns w/1 min breaks
i went onto do floor work, and our floor work we have been doing what we call the ladder, its basic but a good burn for the end of class
you start at: 2 pushups, 4 dirty dogs, 6 crunches, 1 lap around the gym, every exercises goes up by 2 reps, and it ends when your last set your on 4 laps then you repeat that final set back down to the first one, takes about 5-10 min and is good to do once you have exhausted yourself from the regular boxing workout
will be at the gym saturday morning, looking to do some possible track stuff, see how weather turns out

Yteserday I had gym class, used that as my workout, we did a few laps around the gym and ladder exercises and it went well, i kind of wanted to do a 5km after school but it got fairly cold and windy out then it started snowing
Today, at the Gym did simple stuff, skipped, warmed up with some shadow boxing, practised pivoting and moving, worked in pairs for a little bit then went onto do some bag work drills after that finished with floor work doing that ladder exercises
after the gymi got home relaxed for a little and did a 5km jog
15 days until the fight show got to keep the intense training up for next week, i think the week after that will probably have little to no sparring, just more technical stuff until th show

Good trianing today, i should of did a 5km jog but i decided to relax, my shin muscles and foot have bothered me on and off so i didnt want to aggravate anything before boxing
I got to the gym, warmed up on the double ended bag, skipped a little, ran a little, shadow boxed, got in the ring with my 185lb partner, sparred 3 2 min rounds, had a 1 round break and did 1 more round with a 165lb novice guy, went rly good overall, first round was a little sloppy i couldnt find my rhythm, but second got better along with the last rounds was happy, i got respect for my punching power today which is nice, going against some1 20lbs heavier is a tough workout in its self lol
hopefully will run 5km tomorrow and trian hard, got 7 training sessions left and then its time to get in the ring again

So today, no 5km jog as i said i would yesterday however, i slept in majorly and had to go to school and study for a mid term so stuff happens, it was a good sign that i didnt go because i think i have a bit of an injury
I got to the gym, did 3-4 rounds of handpads, went well, i think i skipped a little, did some running and got into shadow boxing in and out of the ring, i felt off, im was not as light on my feet as i usually am, ive been going hard in the gym since the start of this year so maybe somethings caught up
yesterdays sparring was good, not my best rounds but i had great conditioning and landed nice shots but at times i felt flat footed, today i did 3 3min rounds with the same guy yesterday, hes about 180-185 but mind you hes coming down from being close to 200lbs and not to mention im only about 163 right now, so alot of weight to fight against
i took some big shots early on, i fought sloppy in 2 rounds but the third round i came back really strong and made it interesting, even though i felt more like a brawler tn the fact is i went against someone bigger and still managed to hold my own to where he got tired we both foguht a war, i got a small cut on my chin from an accidental headbutt so i may have my first boxing scar lol, overall, my technique wasnt as clean but the fact that i was able to grind out 3 gritty rounds shows that to my coaches and myself, and even the guy i sparred, i showed a good display of heart to keep fighting and thats the biggest accomplishment for a boxer

Good stuff today, although i have not done any road work, it turned out to be for the better, i did have a bit of an injury and with that i have had all my midterms and assingments this week so it was best i relaxed and trained hard and it paid off better
Got to the gym, skipping, running, 2 easy rounds of hand pads, afew rounds of shadow boxing and set a new PR for sparring
4 3 minute rounds wth the same guy all week, i did betterin this sessions thani did last tuesday
my coach is still looking for an opponent on march 27, i should be able to get some body i really hope i do also theres a club show in April i think the 16th, supposively i got a match, the guy had 3 previous kickboxing bouts but his first boxing bout he got stopped, it doesnt matter to me, more fights is what i want and its starting to come thats what i been training so hard for to get fights and get better

Double ended bag 2-3 rounds, ran 2-3 rounds, shadow boxed in the mirror 1 round 2 in the ring, worked in pairs 2-3 rounds, then did the ladder exercises
got home and did a 5km run, nice and simple
im really hoping my coach finds me an opponent next sunday, hes confident he will get me someone but i hope i get one sooner than later, really want to get back in the ring and fight again especially at my gym our home town so i keep hoping that he gets a guy for the club show on the 27th, at least i know i got a bout in april so the mores bouts i can get the better for my experience being a novice

So in th world of boxing, things change as quick and as i got an email from my coach i instantly had a feeling they found some1 and they did so i caught the biggest break ever, only thing is he is 155lbs, i weighed in at 165 almost 166 today, the weight has to be within 7 pounds to be official so my coach wnats me down to like 160-162, i went for an immediate 5km jog, i watched what i ate today i think just having adrenaline my body just drops pounds quick, ii weighed myself im 163, going to the local gym tomorrow to sit in the sauna hopefully get to at least 162 hoping for 161 or 161.5 either way im confident ill make weight, i will try and video tape my fight tomorrow, wow i got so lucky

Well, my fight did not go very good at all, and its got a good story behind it and a big learning lesson
the guy i foguht was supposively going to weigh 155, there is a 7 lb difference allowed for club shows, so if i was 162 they may agree to take the fight, but anyways when i was told he weighed that much i was nervous that he might come in a tad lighter and i thought i would go to the mass extreme to make weight, big ass mistake
i was 166 saturday (i should of only cut maybe 2 pounds) i did some cardio watched what i ate and of course i cut maybe 2 or 3 pounds, i was around 163-164 sunday
well i made a big mistake thinking if i do a bit more cardio, very light, and then go in the sauna for some sessions (sweater and garbage bag and jogging pants) itll be no problem
i got to the weigh ins at 12, weighed in at 159 pounds, really light for me, my opponent weighs in, well not 155 he weighed 159 so that kind of pissed me off and i should of already known better but it gets worse
i decided to rehydrate way too, 2 powerrades and a sandwhich even a bigger mistake just to top everything off i did wrong
so my fight finally comes around 3pm, i step into the ring no nerves nothing, just wishing that i dont get gased but it didnt work that way
1st round was good, i hammered the guy really well, bloodied him up and he actually bloodied me up a bit too, i was winning the first round, regardless of the lame standing 8 count they gave me but i still out boxed him and landed good shots, this kid was just a banger he didnt rly jab he just threw all power shots all the time
2nd round, im feeling really sick and fatigued i could barely move like i wanted, i made tons of mistakes, it was still even in this round until just before the bell i started getting pressured and i tried getting away too fast and i was off balance i ate an overhand right, that i shouldnt have taken, and i fell right in the corner of the ring, i got back up quick but i tripped over my feet making me look as if iwas hurt badly they stopped it
now im not protesting a bad stoppage (i could of continued) but the ref was just doing his job, what did piss me off is after the ref was telling my coach i was really heavy handed and he was going to give the other guy standing 8s but oh well nothing i could do about it lol
i went to the change room talked to my coaches, was watching the next fight next thing you know i went to the bathroom and got sick to my stomach everything i ate before the fight came right out, then i was good again, i wasnt hurt by any punches during the fight, but i didnt fight at my strongest, i knew if i stayed at 165 i probably had a good chance of beating this guy, im just dissappointed that i went to extreme measures and i harmed myself, i got a huge fever now, from doing big mistakes, boxing is a learning experience, next time some1 says they have an opponent 160 or less they can fight at my weight, not taking fights no more if people say they are less than what they really are and thats where i let my ambitous self get in the way, the only thing i could say that was good out of all this bs, people enjoyed the fight, alot of coaches and ppl thought i was winning and the fight shouldnt of been stopped, although not the smartest thing i have done but i had alot of balls to take a last minute fight and go through such extremes just so i can Box in our home ring lol ill be back stronger
yesterday i went to the gym, i didnt do much kind of relaxed, i may go there today if my fever clears up, i wont workout ill just sit around and shoot the **** with my one coach who comes tuesdays and thursdays, he also was working my corner, ill talk to him about my fight and things to improve on etc

So last week, i went to the gym monday tuesday and saturday, i didnt do any real cardio basically worked on form and that was all, i went to the docotrs thursday to make sure i dont got a concussion or anything, which turns out i didnt but i did end up getting a throat and chest infection and it got pretty bad monday and tuesday night, when i was at the gym monday and tuesday i basically did nothing anyways and left early
Monday: was feeling good, enough to train, i did a 5km jog today and at the boxing gym
some double ended bag work, worked in pairs for 3 rounds, skipped 2-3 rounds, ran for a a couple rounds, got ready and did some sparring, 2 rounds of 2 minutes, could of done more but took it easy, being sick for a week i lost a good amount of strength so i relaxed in there and focused more on movement, didnt throw that many punches, did 3 3 min rounds of bag work and then abs

warmed up, we did a little circuit, 3 3 mins on heavy bag, shadow boxing and in the ring with a partner, all of which consisted of non stop punching and moving, with partners we had to work together throwing/mixing up punches and practise blocking and firing back, etc. then did floor work
Thursday
double ended bag work, hand pads 3 rounds, ran a little, sparred 1 2 min round with a lighter guy then 2 3 min rounds with a heavier guy, i wasnt too focused today especially in sparring, i still feel a little weak from being really sick last week, although ive gained my weight back i had gained it by eating every and anything, i have to clear up my diet and next week im going to start clean and train hard again, iam going to get in the best shape i can because i go away in june for a week and a half and i hope i get another fight before june so got to make sure i get my strength back and focus on some intense sparring

gym: lifted some weights, nothing fancy just getting familiar with the weight room again, kinda felt out place because i havent rly been there in some time lol
Boxing
double ended bag, skipping, running, sparred 2 3 min rounds, that is all, pretty long day decent workouts, the nice weather has made it more convincing to be outside and do cardio so im looking forward to a busy season of road work consisting of long and short distance running, sprints, track work and all the stuff i was doing last year during the summer months

Tuesday
5km job
Boxing: we did an iron man challenge something they just pull unexpectedly time from time, purpose of this, to work your cardio til no end lol
so we started off on the first station they called it the prison game i think thats it, basically the coach has like 21 cards all red and black, the numbers on the cards are mostly high (7 and up easily with the odd low number) we had to try and go through the deck twice i think in 14 or 15 minutes, the first time going through the deck the black cards represented burpees while the red cards represented pushups, basically whatever colour card he throws up whatever number is on that card thats how many reps you have to do once every1 is finished he pulls ou the next
i think we got halfway through the second time, the second time around the black cards i think represented squat jumps while the red ones were crunches could of been either or
after that station we moved onto the next station which we worked 15 mins continuously on as well, it was a rotating station 30 seconds on each exercises and switch, it started with: the plank, medicine ball pushups (so one hand on the medicine ball and you use the other to do a push by bringing your chest to the ball and then you alternate) the next exercise was lunges with kettleballs, next were squats with a medicine ball then finished off the either 10lb or 20 lb kettle ball (your choice) you hold the kettle ball between your legs, do a squat and on the way up try and bring the kettle ball up to your chin while having keeping your arms straight so basically your doing a front raise and ya that was a good station
the last station were the punching bags: we did 4 3 min rounds, we would do 30 seconds of a combination then 30 seconds of fast feet while keeping your hands up and repeat, every round was a different combination
after that we did 5 minutes on the ladder of footwork drills then 5 minutes of the stairs outside, intense but good workout
Thursday:
Track work: walked a lap, jogged a lap, timed a quarter mile (got 1:09 which is a PR actually lol) jogged 3 more laps
Stairs: ran the entire stairs from them start all the way back then with my buddy, i ran up a single set of stairs and back down them for 10 reps then he went and did his and to finish we did alternating stairs (i go he go type of thing) for just 5 times for us
by concession stand they have some benches that are probably close to 3ft high id say around that and we did some jumps it worked like this
I had my stopwatch so we did 1 minute of non stop jumps onto the bench and off, we had 1 min break and we repeated this until we completed 5 rounds, was good
Boxing: tonight i went to the beginners class only because i didnt want to burn myself out too much, i got gym class tomorrow and its the last time ill ever run the shuttle run test at the college so i want to relax tonight and give it my all tomorrow hoping to beat my record of stage 10.5
Skipped 2-3 rounds, ran for 12-15 mins, shadow boxed 3 rounds and worked in the ring with a guy for 4 rounds and then did floor exercises, nothing difficult but good workout none the less, hoping to pound this shuttle run test tomorrow im confident i can get stage 11 maybe better
Advanced_Bot
04-19-2011, 08:35 PM
So last week I had to run the shuttle run, i got to stage 11, top of the class, funny thing is, i guess because its the last time we were doing it i felt a little nervousi wasnt runnig at a good pace, just barely making the beeps, even for early stages, but once stage 9 and 10 came around, especially at 10.5 when i knew i just had a few shuttles left, i was making the line with almost a second to spare, when i got to stage 11 i was confident i could of done more but instead of pushing it i instantly stopped and celebrated in my mind that i got a new PR, i may have been good to get more but i was happy with the result
Today
I did 3 rounds of handpads, few rounds of running, got right into sparring, 3 2 min rounds with another novice, hit the bag for 2 rounds, and then floor work, nothing overly difficult, i think it was good to go against a novice today because i havent sparred much since my last fight and being sick for a week and trying to recover and get my strength back was no easy task, cant wait for summer, especially after vacation, going to start some new training, i have done alot of thinking, im not going to do the same style as last summer which consisted of more than neccesary long runs/jogs, dont get me wrong ill do those endurance runs, but my goal is to hit that track up to maybe 3x a week with a minimum of once, going to do alot of quarter mile, and mile training, sprints, bleachers and plyo jumps off the benches and such, also going to purchase a book on weightlifting for boxers, it should give me a good insight of what to do from there ill incorperate my regular training in boxing, track work and lifting into a reasonable routine, going to make sure i eat as healthy as i can this summer, going to be out in the heat 8 hours a day working in a factory again and working in a restaurant as well so ill prob have to purchase some good supplements
Read your fight write-up, that sounded painful dude. Lesson learnt and you'll be better prepared next time.
Keep up the training mate, will check in regularly.

Hey, thanks for checking my journal i appreciate it, ya that fight wasnt my brightest decision i was over anxious to fight, to be honest the fight itself wasnt so bad, i didnt feel all messed up after getting knocked down i actually got up immediately, it was just a fight that i shouldnt of cut any weight i would of had a really good chance of winning it since i was winning until the end of the second round lol
Its been a while since i posted in here, last week i had final exams and so i decided to take a week off from the gym, i started back this week, did some track work on sunday then boxing yesterday
Sunday:
Walked a lap, jogged a lap, timed mile: 6 min 30.78 seconds, now this is not my best mile, far from it, but it tells me somehing: last yr when i was trying to get a great mile time i was getting like 6:20 or a little less, i know for a fact i was not in the best shape sunday and that i actually just paced myself instead of going balls out, it tells me that when im back in shape ill probably get in the low 6 area maybe even less
I did a full round of the stairs from one end of til the other, running up and down all the stairs and back
picked set of stairs and ran up and down them 11 times
went to the benches, did 3 1 minute rounds of continuous jumps
Monday Boxing:
Skipping, running, double ended bag, shadow boxed, heavy bag work,
most likely sparring when i go to boxing later on

Stairs: ran the entire stairs of the baseball stands again
Bleacher Hops: Hopped up the sets of bleachers, 5x
Parking Lot: did a sprint and jog with my buddies, sprint to one end and jog back, 5x, had a small break and did it another 5x, i timed both sets primarily because i wanted to see if we can beat the first time which we did no problem
Jumps: since the track was closed because of an event, the concession stands were open so we couldnt go over there and just start jumping on the benches, so we found another spot in the parking lot and found the perfect ledge which was pretty similar in height to the benches, did 3 1 min rounds with 1 min rest inbetween sets
Weights: (after track work)
DB Bench: 70sx10, 85sx10, 70sx10
Incline DB Bench: 60s 3x12
Push Presses: 95x12, 115 2x12
Leg Curls: 100 3x10 or 12
Dips: 2x10 (shoulders were hurting so i didnt do much)
Calf Raises: i think i did 2 sets of 20 only
very basic as far as weightlifting goes i havent lifted in ages so strength in that department is not even remotely close to what it used to be but that isint going to be a major factor into my boxing performance however, when i figured out what stuff ill use for lifting ill do it 2 MAYBE 3x a week just to perserve strength, any signs of overtraining or crossing negatively into boxing i got to think of something better lol
Got Boxing later today and will be doing track work tomorrow to do some intervals and then will continue doing the other exercises followed by another session of lifting

Thursday:Boxing
Handpads like 2-3 rounds, very basic, worked on the boxer type style, moving around, alot of jabs a few inside punches from the pocket then circle out, slipping and turning your opponent and coutnering
Skipping 2-3 rounds, running 3 rounds
Shadow Boxed 2-3 rounds then worked with a guy who is fighting next week, got in the ring with him, very light contact if any at all, everything on but head gear, coach isnt sure if hes facing a southpaw so i was basically working on chasing him down and doing what a southpaw may do in a fight, did it for 5 3 min rounds
i finished with a solid round of running
Track Work: track was closed again, track and field events all week but we had the baseball stands again
so we started off by doing the entire set of stairs of the abseball stands, one end to another, got back did 10 stair sprints and then ran another entire lap, did 5 more stair sprints and then had a break
we went and did hops up the bleachers, 5 each, then ran one lap and did another 5 and finished off with 5 more stair sprints
parking lot, we did 5 sprints from one end to another, full sprint there and back, timed the first and second set making sure we can push to beat the first set of sprints and we did lol, and to make it more clear when i mention the word "we" it was my 2 buddies and myself doing these exercises
Lifting Session: another very basic lifting session brought to you by me lol
CloseGrip BenchPress: 135, 150, 165x10, so easy yet nothing in comparison to what i used to do sets with lol
Seated Rows: i think i used like 130bs for 3 sets of 10
Upright Rows: 80lbs 3x10
Preacher Curls: 50lbs plus bar 3 sets of 10
Lateral Raises: 20s 3 sets of 10
that is all, the book i bought has recommendations for lifting when your in season and training, it calls for about at least 2 days a week of training, i feel that i can compromise with that but i may alternate some of the exercises, 2 days doesnt seem much but now that im done school ill be working in a factory and a restaurant for the summer and i dont want to overwork myself too much but i think ill be good
Boxing tomorrow morning probably working on technical stuff not sure if sparring maybe
training's looking good mate.
Any fights in the pipeline?
Also, with regards to lifting, you should check this link out, might find it useful - legendary strength coach Glenn Pendlay talking about lifting for MMA etc. http://www.pendlay.com/MMA-Strength-Training-and-Conditioning_df_45.html

Hey man, thx for the link and checking out my journal again, to any1 who follows this journal as well, i apologize for the lack of updates/postings, i got a pretty nasty cold for nearly 10 days, it screwed up an entire week of training, i managed to get to the gym once and i did a basic workout just with handpads and lots of shadow boxing, in the meantime ill miss this week of training because of afternoons but my coach says if any of the pros come to train early in the afternoon im invited to come so ill have to wait and see if he msgs me about that, as far as fights lined up i have a possiblity for May 27th, as much as i want to fight i got to make sure i recover from being sick and get back into some form of training while not being in the gym

Hey, so I havent posted in a while, May was a very uneventful month for training, school was over, got sick for over a week, started working shift work again, just a bad mess, my last training days were on Saturday (not last saturday but the previous) thursday last week and monday and tuesday of this week, rly only worked on shadow boxing, some bag work, and i think 3 of the 4 days did hand pads, i go on vacation in less than a day but ill get back into training June 14th, im going to get more serious about it and get right back into training hard so i can compete

So im back in the gym training again since almost 2 weeks ago when i got back from vacation, to up my last 5 sessions ive only sparred 2x ( 1 3 min round with 2 2min rounds the one day and the other day just 2 2 min rounds) hand pads a few times and the regular shadow boxing and bag drills etc. i also did one day of track work like 5 days after vacation, tested my 1 mile and it took me 6 min 38sec without overly pushing it, that told me i got a little out of shape while i was away but nothing that was way off, in time ill get back into it and i got a potential fight July 23rd, looking to start doing some more track work with road work incorporated just have to set a balance between work and other things but like last summer itll be okay
PS, I have been doing boxing on and off since I was 19 but this is the first time i did a full year straight without taking lay offs so im happy i was able to commit and be able to compete!

I trained yesterday didnt do any hard sparring but i worked with a younger fighter for 2 3 min rounds in the ring, basically he had to chase me down and i had to block/slip punches with the odd counter (he had head gear on and anytime i had a counter i didnt connect hard if i even landed it) pivot around him, change angles, working on defense mainly, the remaining of my training consisted of shadow boxing and basic techniques, unless my coach messages me this week to have me to go the gym early incase he is working with the pros, my back up plan is to do alot of heavy bag work, road work, and track work possibly some light weights, im hoping to see that my coach gets a fight for me in July it would bea great way to end my boxing season as the fight would be near the end of the month with the gym taking its 1 month break from august to september so im just hoping i get the match!

My coach messaged me to come to the gym thursday for noon to spar with another fighter (has 50-70 bouts) and weights around 185-190, i got to the gym warmed up and sparred 2 2min rounds and 1 3min round went very well, i was impressed at the fact that i havent done much sparring but i was able to mix my tactics up decently with good lateral movement, mixing up head and body shots and going more on the inside than i usually do so all in all was good, as far as a fight goes my coach is pending on a call from the coach hosting the july 23rd fights, still keeping my fingers crossed if not there maybe 1 or 2 more chances before the end of the boxing season
track work tomorrow, going to time my mile hoping to get 6:30 or less got to get some solid conditioning incase i do get a fight in the next few weeks or so

Hey guys, i been training but last week was slow with track work and road work, i had a family thing come up that put my week out of wack, that being said i still managed to run and do some basic bag work, i got my mile down to 6:24 still looking to get it to around 6 or less, went to boxing yesterday and sparred 3 2 min rounds after all my warm ups and such and looked really good, my movement, timing and punching accuracy are all improving but the biggest part that has done the best is defense which has taken me a long time to get better at, got boxing tomorrow probably will be sparring once again, still hoping to get a fight the end of this month

Yesterday was a good training session, got there a little early, warmed up in the mirror just doing a bit of footwork, after a few rounds got more into shadow boxing and coming forward, got in the ring with my 10oz training gloves and did some shadow boxing followed by 2 good rounds of handpads, working on my technical game, got ready for sparring, did just only 2 2min rounds today, not alot of people were at boxing, i fought much better/improved on the inside, a few technical errors i still have to clean up but much better i think having some time off last month (like 2 weeks) helped me so much now i just have to be more consistant into my sparring and get in really good shape, overall good sessions, got to get back on that road work and track wrok though, probably in a few days because ill be working all weekend wont have much of a chance to do anything but other than that just eat clean and get ready for training monday

So I have now committed to this journal for a full year, thats pretty cool i started this a year today and maintained it lol, anyways i had a good training session today, no sparring, just conditioning
3 rounds of skipping, 3 rounds of bag drills (working a different combination every round), 3 rounds of shadow boxing, moving forward, pivoting, footwork and basic combinations, 3 rounds of ring work, moving, slipping, etc
outside: 2 rounds of sprints (its roughly 50 metres there and jog 50 metres back, did 2 rounds i think each round we did 4 or 5 sprints)
floor work: we did a pyramid type exercise, start with 1 burpee, 2 pushups, the plank for 10 seconds and then run 1 lap around the gym, we worked up to 6 burpees, 7pushups the plank for a minute and 6 laps
overall it went great, i heard word about a fight, one coach has a guy coming down from 180ish to make 172 but my coach wont take the fight because he wants a guy who is 165 only and i didnt disagree no need to fight guys who can cut from big weight and may not even make weight the day of the fight but anyways im still looking ahead for the next club show where i may get a bout

Tuesday: all conditioning, good class for sure
Skipping 3 rounds, 4 3 min rounds on the bag, 2-3 rounds shadow boxing, 2-3 rounds on hand pads, 3 sets of sprints outside then i spent 3 3min rounds working with a younger kid in the ring, no full contact sparring obviously but just practising movement, defense and allowing him to work on his stuff too, being patient not rushing etc
Today: 3 rounds skipping, 2-3 rounds shadow boxing, 2 2min rounds of sparring a heavier guy, went well, some big shots exchanged was more of a brawl in their than technical sparring but sometimes those are cool lol
might be going to the gym tomorrow at 2pm, another club is bringing a 175lb guy down to spar one of our guys but im invited if i can make it, only thing is i work midnights i might sleep in which right now isnt such a bad idea, working 2 jobs and training takes alot of energy and i need all that i can get for boxing

Yesterday: track work, couldnt do much for 2 reasons: although track was available the baseball stands were filling up because of a baseball game of course, so therefore i could not use the bleachers for extra cardio, second of all, with the humidex the weather has been over 40 degrees the last week so the extreme heat made it difficult to do very much, i tried to go as early as possible for me but even then i could only get so much in
4 laps hard, 4 laps jogging: the 4 hard laps were 1:18, 1:36, 1:38, 1:34 and i didnt time the jogging laps, this was not a result of my conditioning but as i said the heat was much and i havent ran in the hot weather as much as i did last year, i think it cools down next week so i should get better chances/results in these workouts
i did some weight training, im only going to do it 2x a week until boxing season is over which is in a week or 2, i did all power type exercises
Bench Press: worked up to 185x1, 205x1, 225x1, 235x1, suprisingly i think i had more in me
Pullups: easy 3 sets of 10
Deadlifts: 225x5, 275x5, 315x5,
Powercleans: 135 2x5
Push Presses: 115 and 135x5
i didnt do much on the cleans and push presses, i just did these exercises to see where im at, next time in the gym ill probably do cleans again with squats and maybe some goodmornings, nothing crazy but enough to maintain
Punching Bag: 3 3min rounds, plus abs
Today: 5km jog
boxing is open tomorrow and ill be training all week and hopefully its open 1 more week after that, got to really work on some stuff for next year

Boxing Tuesday: Skipping 3 rounds, shadow boxing 3-4 rounds, sparring 3 2 min rounds, worked with a younger kid in the ring doing technical stuff, very light contact, 3 2min rounds
Boxing Thursday: Skipoing 3 rounds, shadow boxing 2-3 rounds, was about to get onto the heavy bags but more people showed up so i had a quick sparring session 2 2min rounds
Today: I had a pretty hefty cheat meal yesterday so i decided to do a nice 5km jog, timed, i havent done that in ages thought it wouldnt be a bad time to see where im at, even though i said i wouldnt do much of this timed runs this year i was wrong because it was a good motivational strategy to help me mentally get through a decent cardio session, i ended up finishing 5km in 22:30, thats not bad considering i havent done much road work this summer and the fact that i weighed 170 this morning, as long as i make sometime between 2 jobs and boxing to get roadwork in ill be okay with it
3 3min rounds on the bag
i bought 2 15lb kettlebells yesterday, going to make use of them sometime or another

Just found this thread. Awesome bro. I boxed for a few years and I'm getting back into it now. I have some extremely poor quality training vids from awhile back if you wanna check em out. Www.youtube.com/jefflefthooklacy don't ask about the name lol I made it a long time ago when I was following jeff lacy thinking he was gonna be a good contender. Anyway keep it up man I'm happy to see others on here with the same passion for our sport. I noticed from your fight you seem to drop your hands a lot and getting countered. Have you been working on that?

Hey man, thanks for checking in here, thats awesome that you want to get back into it and thats exactly what i did, i started at 14 wasnt serious or anything, did it maybe for a few months but then years went by and i was 19 i got back into it on and off for a while until last June i been going consistantly every month (between boxing and very little muay thai experience) i have about 2 years or more of boxing, thanks for checking my video too, that was my first fight and i think alot of mistakes were due to being a bit nervous and having to sit around for nearly 3 hours before i could get in the ring (as you see 2 rings were going, the one i fought in had issues so they had to fix it and by that time it was almost 11:00pm and we got there around 7-7:30), but i noticed the mistakes (the same one you listed) and have been working on getting more comfortable in the ring, my defense has got alot better in just the last couple months, as of now i might be fighting again this month i will just have to make sure i work on alot of conditioning and do it aorund a busy schedule, as far as todays workout was a 5km jog, i did it i 22:32 pretty much same as last week except this week i seem to be up to about 171-172, besides my training last week i didnt do much of anything else outside the ring partly because i was on midnights and it messes up most of my week, will be running alot this week and practising on the bag and such

So the last week or so i been keeping up with some roadwork, i still weigh in at about 170lbs but ive managed to run 5km (just over 3 miles) at 21:41 which is probably my best for this weight, usually if im running near 7 min miles im doing alright, I had boxing today, very basic, quick run, shadow boxing, 1 3min round of sparring (guy preparing for his fight had his last sparring session and had to spar everybody ended up doing several rounds) theni did 3 2 min rounds of technical work with a younger kid, tomorrow im probably sparring one of the big guys again for 3 2min rounds should be a good one

Tuesday: Boxing, did some rounds of skipping, shadow boxing, running, then went onto doing 3 2min rounds with a bigger and probably most experienced amateur fighter in our gym, i felt awkward the first round, the next 2 went good, was really tired after the last round, the gym was very hot it felt like i was sparring in a sauna lol
Thusday: Double ended bag, 1-2 rounds, running, shadow boxing, then got into sparring, i did not spar any1 above my experience/skill level because the guy from tuesday was working and the other bigger guy i usually spar is fighting saturday so i went against 2 guys who have been at the club almost 6 months and have just sparred a few times, the first guy i sparred was like 6'4 210, i was only told to just work with him and try to get inside on a bigger, taller, opponent, that went well, didnt really throw many punches just worked with the guy. the second guy has more experience and alot more rounds than the other guy, instead of going 1 2 min round like i did with the first guy this guy i could of probably done at least 2 maybe 3 rounds with, hes about an inch or 2 taller, weights 180 but built like a tank, i worked alot on my movement and speed, i didnt go in there to smash him but during the round i caught him with a very quick counter left that cut his nose and made it bleed out a good amount, after i noticed the bloody nose instead of giving the rookie a boxing lesson (as in what i got when i first started lol) which i mean by giving him more of a beating, i used my quick speed and, in and out movements, not throwing too many punches, to throw him off and make him miss or not do anything which was the case in this round, my coach didnt let me go another round just ebcause he was still getting ring experience and he didnt want any injuries because his medical has not been returned yet by the governing boxing body (the sanctioning body in our province that approves you and recognizes you as a member of the province) after those rounds i did hand pads worked on getting more compact and counter punching which seems to be improving
I only typed up a big message like that because i realise now that in boxing ive truly developed a decent amount of skill to the point i am able to work with less experienced guys and high experienced guys and distinguish my strengths and weaknesses, not just my own but also i can figure out where i do well on experienced guys (and need work) and where I have improved from when i was a complete beginner and i get that knowledge by sparring those beginners because i can remember/see mistakes they did and compare them to what i was doing wheni first started out, anyways, it sucks this whole summer i did not get a fight, boxing in the summertime is usually not as steady because people get busy working and such, there is a tournament in novemember for people who have 5 fights or less my coach has myself and a bunch of others he wants going, i may also get a tune up fight before then but whatever the case is im going to continue training hard and be patient
im also going to do some roadwork today, maybe 5 or 6km we will see,i still weigh about 172lbs, the gym has a cheap body fat tester at the gym and it gives a good ballpark figure, i have taken it twice in the last couple days and my body fat is rounded to about 11.4% which i say is a fair estimate, would be nice to have about 7 or 8 weighing between 160 and 165 pounds

Tuesday: Skipping/running, Shadow boxing for various rounds, handpads 2-3 rounds, 3-4 rounds of bag work then floor exercises
Thursday: Shadow boxing for a few rounds with running then i did 2 2min rounds of sparring, not alot of people at the gym so didnt do a whole lot, did get some good 2-3 rounds of hand pads in
Today: i weighed in this morning 173, ate a little probably got up to 175lbs and said lets go see how my mile run was doing, to my suprise i did it in 6 min 8 seconds one of my best times, last yr i got about 5:56 and weighed around 20lbs less, here i am not hardly training my mile or running even half as hard as last yr and still weigh nearly 20lbs more and get a very close time, honestly if i didnt have it in my mind that i expected to just get around 6:30 i think i could of beaten my old record, but itll wait another day for that to happen
15 mins on the bag working angles, movement, speed and power, looking good
it sucks that this whole summer produced 0 fights mostly because shows get cancelled and people are working etc, but now with the fresh start of a new boxing season (gets busy next couple of months) my coach expects me to get some fights including a sub novice tournament in november so we'll see, going to get some roadwork in tomorrow and maybe some bag work im currently awaiting a supplement to come that i ordered and as soon as that arrives ill be looking to make a routine involving intense cardio/ regular boxing/ some strength training and hopefully itll be something that i can maintain

So during my week of afternoon shifts i managed to get in a decent amount of roadwork including the mile run which i ran twice, reason being is that i didnt want to think that last weeks time wasnt a fluke and that i was just having a really good day i wanted to ensure that i was conditioned and well, so of course it was accurate because my best time was yesterday in which i got it to 6min 05 seconds, almost at my old record, i find running the mile a real good challenege to my conditioning based on the mental/physical labours and gauging yourself lap after lap on how strong your pace is etc
i went to the gym after to lift weights
Bench Press: 135x5, 185x5, 205x1, 225x5
Push Press: 135 3x5
Skullcrushers: 85 2x10
Seated Rows: 130 3x10
nothing special, went home after that and hit the bag for 15 mins and then did some core work, cant wait for tuesday to finally be back in the gym and start making progress as this month marks the start of a new boxing season

So, I have not posted in this log for sometime, i have been training all this time, made improvements and worked on my conditioning alot, i was running the 3 miles in 20min30, doing alot of bag drills, sparring, hand pads, etc, and just recently ran my best mile time of 5:52 (after taking a week off from training because of a fight i just had) I also fought in a tournament on the Rememberance day weekend where i just came short of victory, i was up 5-2 in the first and 11-8 going into the third just losing 16-14 overall, i ran out of gas in the third round, as my opponent was too, however i felt that the judges scored more in his favour (8-3 for him in that round) when really i thought the round was much closer, it was basically anyones fight and although i lost some people in the audience called it fight of the night and what made it better was that it was the main event of the night and bout number 11 on 11/11/11, the guy i fought was a little shorter than me but built like a brick ****house and was the brawler/puncher type, i did a good job of countering, some decent slips and even going toe to toe, i wish i could of kepy my hands higher at times and did a little more boxing than brawling which probably would of saved me more energy for the last minute in the third round where i started to slow down alot, however, great fight against my toughest opponent, he went on to stop the next guy in the first round to win gold so at least i fought the best, if anyone is interested in the video ill send you the link in PM
and oh, if anyone was wondering, i fought in the middleweight class (152-165) i weighed in at 74.5kg which is .5kg less than the max so i was pretty much at the top of the class

Update
After the fight i had in the tournament, i allowed myself a good week to recover and then got right back into the mix of things, my coach notified me of a club show he was planning to have in our new location and it would be on the 20th of this month, he also let me in on a possible fight on the 10th of this month and strongly recommended me to take it (which was a good idea) so i buckled up and trained hard for the next few weeks, alot of road work and gym work, etc, i ended fighting on the 10th i weighed 158 in the morning and by weigh ins around 160-161, i won my first bout, stopped the guy by disqualification, i had knocked out his mouth piece 3 times (first time is a warning, 2nd time he has a point taken off and third time its over) and i finished it in the last 10 seconds of the bout, this fight was unlike the other 3 matches i had, i was alot more stationary than usual, my counter punching was solid and my body shots were hurting the guy which made him breathe heavy with his mouth open making his mouth guard vulnerable, i was happy for the victory but i did not get a video, i only have a picture with one my coaches and my self holding my medal as evidence from the fight lol, although appearantly his girlfriend had taken some video footage and more pictures ill have to ask him about
as far as the club show, it did not happen, it was cancelled and im okay with that because for the last couple weeks ive been sick and i started feeling like that about a week before this possible club show (around the time i fought actually) so all in all everything worked out the way it should have
I have had a solid year of training and then competing for the first time in amateur boxing, i ended up with a 1-3 record but it is not the win/loss ratio that matters to me, your first 10 fights are learning experiences and i would say (besides one fight where i fought sick) you could argue that i should have won the other 2 because they were close/tight matches, so i know im doing okay, i will work harder next year and make it another successful year of boxing

Training sessions this week:
Monday and Tuesday were easier training sessions it was not as fully organized because people are just making there way back from the holidays, that being said, all I did on Monday was some shadow boxing and 5 2 minute rounds of sparring, Tuesday was much the same but only did 3 2 min rounds of sparring
Thursday: More intense, with just about everyone coming back to the gym it was more organized, we did the usual 3 rounds of skipping, ladder exercises (focuses on agility), I did 3 rounds of handpads, 3-4 rounds of shadow boxing, then 3 rounds of bag drills followed by sprints that lasted i think maybe 10 minutes?
Tomorrow ill be going to the gym in the morning, i want to start a new training program for the New Year that focuses on conditioning all year long instead of just random spurts like i did last year (for example when i had my last 2 fights i focused alot on conditioning and then after those fights i had taken long breaks from doing anything) i would rather be in shape all the time instead of peaking and then dropping back a few steps, ill never know what type of shape i can get into if i dont commit more strongly to my conditioning/nutrition

Saturday: Skipping 3 rounds, ladder exercises for agility, shadow boxing 2-3 rounds, hand pads 3 rounds and then sparred 2 beginners doing a total of 4 2 min rounds (2 rounds with each) after boxing i did a 3 mile rune
Monday: Skipping, ladder exercises, shadow boxing then sparred 3 3min rounds, light bag work, looking good so far just need to implement road work to keep my weight good and help strengthen my endurance back to what it was, i went to a specialty shoe store today one im familiar with, the employees will record you as you run back and forth in the middle of the store (a green lane they implemented in the middle of the store which seperates both sides so you obviously dont run into shoe racks and such lol) and from that they can evaluate; stride, form, technique and strike pattern, etc. I was able to get a nice pair Sauconys ontop of some of the winter apparel i got to run in the cold weather as its approaching soon (running in the cold sucks but i must do it)
I also ordered some new boxing boots, hopefully will get them in the next couple of weeks, i ordered Everlast High top boxing boots, ive always liked Everlast products so im sure ill be impressed when they come in

Tuesday: started my day off with a 5 mile jog, its the first time running this distance in like over a month, i also timed it because i had a goal to try and keep a tempo pace of like 7:45 miles and i was within that range i finished the run in 38:21 not bad because this was the first run this year with any intensity (i did 3 3mile runs this year which were lackluster in comparison) i figured out what i will do for my roadwork assistance, mon-thurs i will run 5 miles at a tempo pace, friday i will do a quick 3 mile run and saturdays ill do speedwork either at the outdoor track ive used, if it snows too much ill have to use the one at Y
Boxing: started the session with 3 rounds of skipping then moved onto the agility exercises on the ladder, next i moved right onto sparring did 3 2min rounds followed by 2-3 rounds of handpads and a few rounds on the bag then we did 3 2min rounds of hallway sprints and finished off the session doing floor exercises

Wednesday: 5 mile run, 41:15, not the greatest but pacing was off because i just started road work again, i was over confident in my ability to run close to what i was at last month but that wasnt the case, at least i got the run in
Thursday: 3 mile run (i decided i would do a quicker/stronger 3 mile run on this day then have friday off, first week back into doing road work so having a shorter but solid run with a day off would get me back on a good start) i did just over 3 miles in 21:34 so im pretty much back in range for running 7 minute miles, once i get another week or 2 of roadwork in my fitness should be close to what it was before holidays, hopefully the weather doesnt get much worse as its been snowing badly because i really dont feel like having to run at a track in a gym lol
Boxing: 2-3 rounds skipping, ladder exercises, shadow boxing 2-3 rounds, bag work drills 4 rounds, then we did hallway sprints for 10 minutes straight, when we do sprints its usually around 5-10 people, we sprint up the hallway which is roughly 40m and then jogg back and repeat, its great for conditioning and works for boxing as far as what little rest/recovery intervals you have between exchanges, after the sprints we finished with floor work but it was done in a circuit, 5 different exercises which we rotated every 20-30 seconds it included; the side plank, dirty dogs ( its similar to a push up you could say, basically you make your hips touch the ground and one the ascension you reach your opposite hand to opposite ankle and touch it and repeat), burpees, kettle bell swings, alternating arm push ups on the medicine ball (if thats what you call them not sure) we did the circuit about 3 times and was a good finisher to the session, i got training at 10:30am will probably do some more roadwork as well (was looking forward to do some speedwork but ill give that until next week when im conditioned from regular running) i may also take a video of some bag work too ill think about it

I didn't find any mention of hitting the speed bag. Do you do it?

Hey, there is no mention of the speed bag and thats my fault, before our gym moved a couple months ago, id usually get to class about 45 minutes early (beginners class is at 530 and our competitive class is at 630) and work on both the speed bag and double ended bag, but since the move we have not fully set up the speed bags and double ended bag (and i think its because somethings need to be replaced, probably need new ones) and i have not been able to do the work, sucks because i was decent at the speed bag but starting to get really good using the double ended bag
Saturday: i got to class a little late, weather was just terrible, i missed the skipping/ladder exercises so i just got into shadow boxing, did some bag work then i worked with 2 people in the ring: one complete beginner like his second time sparring 2 3 minute rounds, then i worked with a younger kid and did 3 3 min rounds, after sparring we did hallway sprints for 10 minutes followed by wall sits (we had to pass a medicine ball around, if you broke form you had to do 10 pushups and get back into position i think this lasted for like 5 min) after boxing i went on and did a 10km run, i had to take my time i never ran in this much snow, if the weather persists, i think i will spend 5 days a week doing those nice long distance runs and then on the weekend ill have no choice but to go to a gym and do speed work in an indoor track and ill probably do the treadmill as well but use it in variation to running hills since i dont live close to any
so this is what i plan to do for a schedule
* on days i dont have boxing -> work on the bag for 20-30 minutes, focus on combinations, footwork, spinnig/turning the bag, angles, speed and power, putting it all together
* add frequent ab workouts
* five days a week do my best to run 6.2miles(10km) throughout the winter, or at least until the snow melts, i think this will build up a good base for endurance, i like doing short fast runs too but it can wait until its nicer out and when it is ill be using the outdoor track alot more than i thought i was going to last year
* speed work one day a week: the indoor track is alot smaller than the outdoor track, 13.1 laps=1 miles and 8.2 laps= 1km, so ill do something like 4laps run hard, 1-2 jogg, and repeat, hopefully get 2-3 miles out of it then finish on the treadmill working on an incline (havent figured out the number for the incline yet) for 20-30 minutes
going to give it my best with this program, i may miss a run or two based on work schedules or anything else that comes up but ill keep this log updated when i get the chance

Monday: i did my 6.2mile run (10km) nice steady pace, this distance is perfect right now for maintaining fitness and staying in shape
Boxing: Skipping 3 rounds, ladder exercises, shadow boxing 3 rounds then i got into sparring, i ended up doing 4 3 minute rounds with a heavyweight, after sparring i joined in on some sprints and then we were split into teams, we had to do these exercises with better technique/form than the other team while trying to fight through fatigue, its fair to say our team won lol but after that the class was over, i did miss out on the bag drills today because i did an extra round of sparring and the class also ended a bit earlier but its alright ill be hitting my bag this week when i dont got boxing

Tuesday: not too many people showed up to the gym, it was a quicker session than usual, skipped, ladder exercises, shadow boxed and did 3x3min rounds with a younger kid who will be fighting in the same tournament im registered in coming up next month, this will be his first fight and hes doing well, on a side note, i cant believe its been a year almost since ive been competing, i did this same tourny last year and had a great time, it was also my first fight too, after sparring we did some hallway sprints and floorwork, as far as roadwork, i havent done any this week because for the last few days ive had similar symptoms return that i was having last month and thats when i got pretty sick, i am going to try running again but i think ill stick to 5miles a day and as long as i can stay/feel healthy nothing is worse than getting sick before a huge event and it sucks because roadwork for me is very important an id like to be always be in the best shape possible

Ah that sucks man, finding a good pair of boxing boots is a pain, im sorry man i think ill be good with these boots not to mention i also got a pair of rival boxing boots (hi tops as well, got em cheap) as a back up pair, not as good as the everlast ones but good enough to train with, so quick question, how long have you been training/fighting for? i dont really post in the mma fight section but i have came across a few of you're posts and they involve boxing, just curious thats all
todays training: 5 mile run, Skipping 3 rounds, ladder exercises, shadow boxing 1-2 rounds with 2 rounds of handpads, then sparred a beginner for 3 2min rounds, worked on my defense, picking off punches and counters, then got onto the heavy bag for some heavy bag work, because i cannot make it to the gym thursday ill be going in tomorrow afternoon to work with the pro trainer, should be good
I am beginning to realize that my skills/conditioning and ring intelligence is paying off and it shows when i work with beginners, working with them reminds me of how i was when i just started to spar and learn how to box, anytime i spar beginners, i pick off punches, can read them quickly and also make them gas out quickly because of pressure, i move forward only throwing light jabs and occasionally throwing the odd straight left or countering with hooks (nothing too intense) and i can see how guys wilt under pressure because of the threat and i can see where all my old mistakes used to be, i obvious got alot more to learn but my coaches are getting more impressed with my improvements and that im starting to really put punches together and mix them up and read guys better, not to mention im starting to really learn how to use my speed and power in which my coaches say im very good in both departments so thats always good to hear but like i said, still got much to learn but at least its satifisfying to know all the hard efforts pay off and that the skills are getting stronger

Today i went to the gym for 12 to do a workout with the pro trainer, this was probably one of the toughest workouts ive had yet, as a result of the workout i decided to give my day off from road work, i will continue it tomorrow as long as i get 5 days in but today was a well deserved day off
Started out shadow boxing in the ring, went 12 minutes straight, after that i was given a very short break, about the amount of time it had taken him to put on the belly pad and hand pads lol, did those for 8 minutes straight, worked on my jab, slipping, turning the guy, ducking, counter punching, setting up the punches properly, was good stuff, right from there hopped on the heavy bag, i did 4 3min rounds continous non stop punching for those rounds, worked on the same stuff that was focused on in the ring, breaks between rounds was maybe 20-30 seconds, after the bag drills i went onto some conditioning exercises, focused on 2 exercises: first exercise was a tire flip, i cant tell you how heavy the tire is but every1 who has flipped tires knows that it can be exhausting after a while lol, i flipped the tire from one side of the gym and back as quick as i can with good form, after 3 minutes, i had a short break of 20-30 seconds and went over to the ring, the next exercise involved plyo jumps, for 3 minutes straight, jump up onto the ring standing straight for a second and jump down, after that was done i would rotate back to the tire, i did this for a total of 3 3 min rounds each, 18 minutes of exercise with little breaks in between and continuous repitition, i finished the workout with 10 minutes of hard skipping, was a good one for the books, would do that again for sure

I'm an amateur seeking to go pro sometime in the future. I've been training for 5 years. I'm also a grad student in exercise science. I see boxing as just one big competition to see who can get more coordinated and thus acquire better mechanics. Most boxing training is essentially recoordinating the muscles for more speed and better efficiency of locomotion. I have extremely good kinesthetic awareness so I'm very good at motor learning. I pretty much spend hours everyday trying to get faster and then I also study motor learning and motor control theory in school. Getting as fast as I can and going pro in boxing is my plan in life to get rich lol. I'm a light heavyweight.

Thats cool man, you've certainly been dedicated to the sport and exercise in general, i enjoy it because of all the reasons you stated; the competition, getting better, developing your skills and getting your body adapted to them, speed, power, its all on you to keep up the hard work in order to improve, it definately is like a big chess match and styles do make fights which makes it entertaining, i wish i knew the importance of the sport and what i could of done with it when i was younger, i originally started at 14 but just for a few months, i got back into it at 19 and 20 but had a lay off, i guess you could say my total time boxing is just about half or slighty more than what you have been boxing for but i probably have alot less fights than you
you say you want to turn pro you have any idea when you will aim for that? Im unsure about going pro but who knows, i definately want to keep getting better and get more fights as an ammy so i will have to see where that takes me.
and just curious, light heavyweight for us is 165-178 is that the same for you? i know thats the standard light heavy weight class for amateur boxing here, pretty sure its the same in the states (assuming you were from there) my weight class is middleweight 152-165, i compete in tournaments at 165 but for club shows i can get down to the mid-high 150s, i may look to get down to 152lbs in the future but that will take more experience in the gym/cutting weight right

Update:
Friday: went to the gym to meet the coach again, did 12 minutes shadow boxing, 8 minutes on pads (worked on rolling out, setting up the body punches, mixing up speed and setting up the big shots, footwork, turning the guy out and constant movement) 4 3 min rounds on the bag and then we did some ab exercises
first exercise was a circuit, we used a medicine ball, i would have to throw the medicine ball against the wall and catch it, purporse of this was to rotate your hips into the movement, i switched stances everytime he called for it, then on the last part of the circuit i had to slam the medicine ball down onto some mats, lift the ball over my head and squat down and smash the ball and repeat, after that circuit i did basic crunches, the plank exercises, and some other ab exercses with the medicine ball
Saturday: very basic, skipping, shadow boxing, bag work, then we did a drill with a hoola hoop, you keep your lead foot in the circle, and with a partner you work on light combinations keeping form, blocking, rolling, while maintaining good balance and keeping your foot inside the circle, that way you dont square up and you can practise inside fighting alot
Monday: Skipping 3 rounds, Shadow boxing 3 rounds, sparring: 1 2 minute round with a younger guy, then 3x2s with the heavyweight, i looked pretty good, felt good and ill be ready to go for this tournament which ill give more details after i finish typing out this workout, i went on to do floor work followed by 2-3 rounds of handpads after that i went to the gym to run on the track, i did 40 laps which was just over 3 miles, completed the 40 laps in 20min 12seconds, which is really good, this was probably my last session of hard running, i chose to do it inside because the weather outside has been on and off, either really cold and snowing lots, or raining, and lots of ice, i did the safe thing and ran indoors, the workout was still really solid regardless
I have a tournament this weekend which goes from friday-sunday, its an elimination style tourny, you win you progress, you lose you're out, as of right now i will be fighting this friday in the 69-75kg division, i fought in this tournament last year and it was a blast, i cant promise that this year i will get any videos seeing as my camera is damaged i dont think it will be possible however maybe i can ask someone coming up with us to take a video or possibly some pictures

Hey thanks man, unfortunately i didnt get to fight this weekend, i got ill and the doctor didnt pass me, its disappointing but at the same time im not going to linger on it, i fought sick once and just wanted to fight for the sack of fighting and the end result was a loss and it was a fight that if i were healthy would of had better outcomes, theres nothing to do but to get back into training, ive had a cold on and off since early december and was on antibiotics for sometime so i will probably have to go back to the doctors, our club is having a show on the 25th i have a chance to be on that card lets see what happens
i went to boxing tonight, i didnt feel weak but i wasnt feeling the greatest, we did the usual warm ups and we did jab sparring only, i was okay with that, i worked with 3 different people 1 2minute round each, was good, my reflexes, timing, speed, countering abilities, its all there, looking to get back into full sparring and getting back into condition

Ya man it does but this stuff happens i cant tell you how many times last year i was scheduled to fight or get possible fights but they never went through because of certain circumstances, now im starting to feel better i got to buckle down quick and get back into shape as i got just 15 days before this card, tomorrow i will be in the gym with the pro coach and doing boxing/conditioning stuff, soemtime next week id like to get sparring videos but for now, Iskandar check you're PM box for a link to my 3rd bout i had back in November, speaking of which, my last fight in December was partially recorded, the person who recorded it is good friends to one of my coaches (she went up with us) and she told me she is going to put the parts she recorded on a memory stick and i should be receiving it by next week and when i do/can i will put it up on youtube and post it here, it wont be the full fight but i think it will have the ending of the fight where i knocked out the guys mouthguard for the 3rd time which lead to a DQ victory for me (it was like the last 10 seconds of the the third round) it was a good match there might be some action shots as well, in which is there is i will try and put them up

man, I thought you won too! You seemed to land the more effective punches but he was a real swarmer. You got a mean left hand straight down the pipe, caught him good at 5:26-27, one of the best punches of the fight. You caught him clean again at 9:44 but you were real tired then. He ate them pretty well.
Both you guys went for it, was all heart at the end. Good close fight, only your 3rd bout too.

Ha, thanks for watching it man, it was a tough fight for sure, even though there were a couple technical flaws on both our parts, you have to admitt we both landed some big punches that got the audiences attention, my favourite punch was at the end of the second, just as the bell was about to ring (and i remember this clearly as it happened) he went to throw and i countered really quick with a solid right hook to the side and you can hear the popping sound, you have to look really carefully because on the video its hard to make out and it happens fast because we were both throwing at the same time i just managed to beat him to the punch, he landed some really nice punches too, in that second round he had me close to the ropes at the left side of the ring and he popped me with a nice right hand but i bounced back quickly, one good thing about that fight is that we had a solid ref, she is a fighter too and she is not quick to give standing 8 counts when people seem in trouble (alot of refs will jump in quickly if they think you are in trouble, safety reasons obviously) so that was awesome that the fight played out as it did, people got their moneys worth, that was the main event fight on rememberance day and it was ironically the 11th bout, some people came up to me and said that was fight of the night so win or lose i got to be part of tournament where i got to be the main event and put against a strong opponent and put up a fight until the end, i dont think ive ever felt so tired i was relieved when the bell rang, he was too, both of us were gassed lol
Training: friday, went to the gym 12 mins of shadow boxing in the ring and then 5 3 min rounds on the bag, focused on mostly the right hook right off the jab making it shorter and more powerful, last round focused on all punches putting them together, i really want to video tape some of the training i do with the pro coach, he said i can, id like to video tape myself doing pad work with him and a round or two of bag work and maybe some strength/conditioning stuff, and as well on regular boxing days to get a round or two of sparring recorded
Today: Big snow storm, got to the gym late and had limited time because of work, i am on break right now so i can type this lol, all i had time to do was do 3 rounds of shadow boxing, then did 3x3min rounds of sparring with a beginner, first round jabs, second round everything goes but at alight pace, 3 round i put the pressure on him, didnt really use power, no need to, just stalked him down and threw light punches different angles and mixing punches up, was good
as afr as road work goes, well this stupid storm gets in the way of things, i got 2 weeks before a possible fight, my best idea yet was to just do interval training on the treadmill with inclines, i wont benefit running outside now that its really bitter and i dont want to risk getting sick again, although i dont care for treadmills at least i can try and make the workouts interesting which should benefit one way or another for me

Monday: skipping and shadow boxing for 3 rounds plus ladder exercises, worked with a partner for like 3 or 4 rounds, practised blocking, slipping, etc. went onto do bag work with our partner, we did 3 total rounds, each round was different, speed, power, then 1-2 body hook, each round you go for about 10-15 seconds, coach calls a switch and you hold the bag for the partner and continue rotating that way until the coach calls time, after bag work did hallway sprints and agility work followed by floor exercises
Tuesday: i had to get to the gym early that day, shadow boxed and sparred for 3 3min rounds one with a guy who is 215-220 the other 2 rounds with a guy who is 205, i got a video of them sparring one round, my rounds didnt come out very well, the camera angles were messed up whoever filmed it kept moving the camera all over the place, it sucks but good news does follow i will post it after i finishing typing my previous workouts
Wednesday: got to the gym, shadow boxed 12 min straight, pad work for 10-12 min, and then did 3 4min rounds on the bag, got home did a 3 mile run, weather is alot nicer out, unusual for this time of year but id rather run outside over a treadmill any day
Thursday: 3 mile run, get to the gym, skip 3 rounds, ladder exercises, shadow boxed 2-3 rounds, 2-3 rounds of hand pads, 3 rounds of bag work and then 3 3min rounds sparring with a pro, pretty good day id say
Okay so the bad news is, i did not get good enough videos for sparring, however, my session on wednesday i was able to get a video of me doing the hand pad work and its alot different from conventional hand pad work, alot of coaches call out for combinations and occasional slips, blocking etc, this coach i work with was a pro and even inducted in the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame, he believes in working the pads as you would in a fight, every session i have with him he will work a particular skill and put much focus into it; in this video he really wanted me to focus on ducking and slipping properly and turning the opponents, you will noticed that it is stressed alot in the video, he also allows me to let my hands go and mix my punches up while allowing me to determine when i should angle off and turn him, he believes in technique and speed (so no power punching in this video) then near the end of the session he finishes it off with a conditioning drill in which i believe i did at least 61 times, you will know what im talking about if you watch the video, here is the link enjoy!

I just came back from the gym after doing a 1 on 1 session with the pro coach and man it was pure torture today but worth it lol
I did 12 mins of shadow boxing in the ring, went onto the heavy bag and did 5 4 minute rounds, now when i do bag work with this coach theres no such thing as slowing down or trying to find a way to take breaks, constantly punching and moving and working i swear i may have thrown close to 1500 punches all together and who knows but it was alot
the next stuff we did was a pure conditioning circuit , i did 3 minutes of plyo jumps on the ring followed by the plank for 3 minutes followed by doing superman for 3 minutes back to plyo jumps for 3 minutes then onto leg raises (he alternated the height of my legs, every minute i had to raise them slighlty higher, did this for 3 mins with a quick 20-30 second break and then repeated the same exercise for 3 more minutes) after leg raises i got up and grabbed two broom sticks, had to hold them straight out from my side, infront of me and over me for a minute each, that concluded the workout, was very tough but the efforts/gains will help make marginal progress in the ring

I have been training like usual, we havent had any sparring this week because tonight our boxing club is hosting a show and every1 fighting on the card had spent this last week touching up on their skills, as far as my fight goes i have to weigh in between 160-162 (i know the guy im fighting and his coach, he is not lying about his fighter's weight when he tells us that he weighs anywhere between 157-161) i checked my weight this morning i was between 159-160, i had a small bowl of whole wheat pasta and after i post this i will have a nice long lap, weigh ins are not until 5 and fights start at 7, i dont expect to fight until at least MAYBE 830 but more likely closer to 9, i will try and get a video tonight this is my 5th fight im pumped up its fight night! going to do my best

Update:
Had my fight this weekend, weighed in at 161.5lbs, I ended up having my worst fight performance to date which costed me a split decision lost, and regardless of the bad performance, the guy i fought, his coach, the whole entire gym all thought i should of won, it was actually kind of obvious i should of to but i didnt perform well and here are some cliff notes to the fight
Boxed well in the first round, easily countering and winning exchanges, stuck to the guy lik glue he had no where to go
second round and third round, stayed close to the guy, should of moved more and not be so open, no clue why, but hands were all over the place, turned the fight into a brawl, took some shots that i shouldnt have or wouldnt if i fought like my previous fights, although it was a brawl i was getting the better exchanges and was cleary in better shape, not to mention alot faster and stronger
got a bloody nose and a cut under my eye in the third, still came forward throwing, knocked kids mouth guard flying, should of went to the body more, when i did go to the body buddy was hurt bad, also hurt him bad with a nice straight left that wobbled him but instead of boxing him i looked too much to brawl
all in all, my coach rewared me on my efforts and heart, but not performance, he says if i boxed like i normally do in my other fights, it would of been an easy quick night for me, he agrees i should of won fight but did not deserve it the way i fought he thinks i tried to hard to redeem myself for the tournament i couldnt fight in, also being a home show i had alot of friends and family watch, he thinksmy nerves could of got the best of me, coach says we will work alot on mental aspects and preparations in the gym, my conditioning and skill sets are there i just need to focus better
i iwll admitt, alot of the stuff i did in this fight was not a replication of how i been sparring, i wasnt mixing my punches, not moving as much, and just displayed some sloppy punching, however, good parts of the fight; i did land some flush shots and combinations, did hurt the guy to the body, i stunned him with some nice straight punches, better luck next time, probably get a rematch with this guy, his coach is very reliable and will most likely accept rematch
i dont have a video uploaded yet, all i have is pictures at the moment
Shame about the loss buddy. Keep up the good work and I'm sure you will more than make up for this minor blip in your next outing!

Hey man, its alright, it happens in boxing thats the way it is sometimes, on a good note, i have positive updates, since the last fight i been training hard, running, sparring ( i had three good sparring sessions of 3x3 min rounds with a pro) and guess what? i fought yesterday, a rematch against a guy i previously had beaten in december and i have to say this fight was ALOT better than my last fight 3 weeks ago, i looked alot better in there, i was busy working off counters/combinations, i ended up winning a 3-0 decision last night so its all good
i did not take a video however, the guy had some friends take a low quality video and he allowed me to keep the link so i will post it, it was a great fight for both of us, the kid improved alot and we put on a show, im in the blue corner
ps this was my 6th fight i felt like this was one of my best bouts

Just checking in, havent posted in a while but training has been good, tweeking up my diet and getting ready to add more road work in (havent done much since my last fight) but sparring is going well, going hard against the more experienced guys is toughening me up again, i sparred 3 times this week, my nose, sides and arms are sore lol, working alot on the inside and working the body shots and mixing up combinations, our club is having another show may 6th, that is my guaranteed next fight, now, i could of fought on the 28th this month but i have an important event to go to but i just got news that another club in the same city is having a show on the 27th and they asked our coach for a fighters list but there are some problems (booking it off work, and, on the boxing website that lists all the club shows says that this club show is actually on the 28th not the 27th hoping that the website made a typo) but we'll see, will keep this log updated as much as possible
That's cool man. Good to hear training's going well.
By the way, I'm about to purchase my first pair of gloves (16oz). Any recommendations?
Plan to use it for thai boxing as well though, but most probably mainly for boxing.

Hey man, it all depends, alot of people like twins for muay thai and boxing, when it comes to gloves i usually buy 10-12oz and so far i had a decent pair of rival boxing gloves (used them alot) and i just recently purchased a pair of hayubusha (sorry if spelling is incorrect) 12 oz bag gloves, great wrist support and they fit nice and snug and the 12oz gloves feel more like 14+, i also ordered a pair of cleto reyes which are supposed to be solid but they havent arrived yet so im not sure, i would do some research, in my opinion, like any sport good equipment is costly and buying a decent pair of bag gloves that give you good support and are of good quality maybe costly
today was decent for training, i got to the gym, skipped 2-3 rounds, and did some running, lately every tuesday for the last few weeks our one coach has been making us do laps outside, one warm up lap and then 3 timed laps, to challenge us to beat our times, our gym is in an old highschool which sits in the middle of a crescent, each lap is about 600m so 3 laps is 1800m making it a little more than a mile, anyways, i did it in 6:22 today which is not so bad that probably puts me at a 5:50 mile or so, after that we went inside, did some agility exercises, 2 rounds of shadow boxing, then did 4 2 min rounds of sparring, i felt a little weak and off today, between that run and the hours i been working has drained me alot so the last couple of tuesdays sparring sessions have been a little more difficult, i got to be more consistant with doing my roadwork and conditioning, i currently weigh about 168lbs, although im in decent shape, ill be alot better off at like 160-162 and that owuld be great to get down to by next week seeing as i could possibly be fighting on the 27th this month and then the 6th of may other than that training has been good

Wednesday: met up with the pro coach, early morning workout, did 10-12 mins shadow boxing, 10-12 mins of handpads and then 3 or 4 4 min rounds on the ba theni had to go to work,i cant remember if i did any road work on this day not sure
Thursday: 5 mile jog, went to boxing, skipped, shadow boxed, handpads and agility drills with bag work and floor work
Friday: went to the gym to meet up with coach again, did 10-12 mins shadow boxing, i think 4x4 min rounds on the bag then did floor work, we did these exercises in order: plank, shoulder touch plank, pushups, burpees and squat jumps, did the first set by doing each exercise for 10 seconds then moved up to 20 then 30 and worked back down from 30 back to 10 went home and did a 5mile jog
Saturday: hardly anybody was at the gym, did a similar workout to fridays, shadow boxing 10-12 mins, 4x4 min bag rounds, every round focused on technique and rythm, no power punching but constantly punching and moving your feet, and bending your knees, mixing punches up, after this we went and did hallway sprints for 10 mins and finished off with the same floor exercises as friday, was going to do a timed mile run but only to realize that i forgot my stop watch, didnt matter, instead i did a simple 3 mile jog, going to try and do a 3 mile jog tomorrow morning, and since ill most likely be woking all day monday going to try and get roadwork and bag work in sometime i hope

do you do any weight training with boxing?
Advanced_Bot
04-25-2012, 03:18 PM
I used to lift weights way before boxing and did have some decent numbers for some of the major lifts, but then i started boxing i couldnt maintain both, i have tried on and off combine them but havent had any success and for me personally, as much as i would like to combine both i dont know if it will happen, maybe during the off season in the summer when there are less oppurtunities to fight and such i might but we'll see, i have lost a good amount of muscle mass since i joined boxing (i expected that with the volume of cardio i do outside of boxing) but it hasnt hindered my strength in the ring, i feel comfortable, alot more flexible and loose which is good, but ya if i find time to do some sport specific weight training (more explosive olympic style lifting) then ill add it but right now i wont
Tuesday: skipped 3 rounds, did agility drills, shadow boxed and a bit of bag work, then i did 4 rounds of 3 minutes of pretty much just body sparring with another fighter, was good stuff, my right hook to the body has improved leaps and bounds, i didnt have much of a body hook like 6 months ago but since i been working 1 on 1 with the pro coach for the last several months ive really developed a strong hook, sometimes its a little wide but im working hard on keeping it nice and tight and snapping it quick, my coach thinks that my right hook is my strongest punch
Wednesday: shadow boxing 10-12 minutes, then 5 4 minute rounds on the bag of just continuous punching, mixing up the punches, not really using a whole lot of power in this drill but its designed to keep you continuously moving and punching without thinking it also serves as a great drill for conditioning, overall great workout, looks like the fight this friday is off, the other coach didnt get to our coach about possible fights, however, i have 2 different opponents lined up for the 6th of may and ill find out who ill be fighting next week
on a side note, im currently sitting around 167-168 looks like ill be getting down to around 162 for the 6th got to get a few good roadwork sessions in and relaly watch what i eat

May I ask, which boxing gym you work out at? Do you live in Toronto area?

Hey man, i workout at the niagara falls gym, i am somewhat familiar with some of the gyms in the toronto area (ie cabbage town) but have never been up to one before
Thursday: our gym had like an iron man workout going on, we had 5 stations set up, alot of it focused on core exercises and cardio, we had to do each station for 10 minutes and go onto the next
Friday: got together with the pro coach, 10-12 mins of shadow boxing followed by 6 4min rounds on the bag then i went onto those 5 exercises i posted before ( plank, shoulder touch plank, push ups, burpees and squat jumps) going from 10 seconds to 20 up to 30 and back down from 30 to 10 seconds, finished off with 1 3min round of shadow boxing

Update: still training, 3-5x a week, today i went to the gym and warmed up with rounds of skipping, ladder exercises and some shadow boxing, got into the ring and sparred 3x3 min rounds (been a while since i did 3 min rounds) with a light heavy weight i held up pretty strong and landed decent combinations and counters between exchanges, went onto do bag work, wasnt sure if they were 3 or 4 min rounds but did 3 of them non stop punching and moving, hallway sprints for 10 mins and then floor exercises (the same exercises i posted last time it seems to be the routine we do after a boxing workout) i currently weigh around 172lbs, my birthday is coming up and id like to get down to 162ish i got my work cut out for me got to buy some groceries and do a little more cardio outside the gym

Monday: did a 5 mile jog
Tuesday: 3 mile jog , went to boxing later in the day, skipped a few rounds, had a feeling we were going to do some running outside, we did one warm up lap around the gym and then 3 timed laps (3 laps around the gym being over a mile) i did it in around 6:15, still the quickest of every1, got back into the gym for some shadow boxing and bag work which consisted of speed drills, power, etc, then finished off with floor exercises
Today: met up with the pro coach at the gym, did 12 mins of shadow boxing then 4 4min rounds on the bag with 30 second breaks and then 1 more round of shadow boxing, todays training consisted of keep me fighting over my front foot and continiously moving it/driving it with non stop punching, worked alot on keeping the hands high and in front, bending properly, rolling the shoulders and turning the wrists, doing all these things at once to have a constant rythm and to put continuous pressure on the opponent, this 1 on 1 training with the pro coach is paying off, am finally picking up much better and getting used to his training style, very happy with todays results, maybe going for a 5 mile jog later on
good to hear that training is going well mate. Keep it up!

Update:
Its been a long while since i posted in this log, im still training but not as much as i would like, work is very busy this summer so i can only go 2 maybe 3x a week, as far as fighting goes, we'll have to see, sometimes club shows dont always go through because people are busy in the summer so its not always a guarantee when oppurtunities arise, anyways, will resume training for the summer but wont be upset if i dont fight until later in the year, just been busy alot!

It has been such a long time since posting in this log, I had a pretty laid back summer, I did go to the gym through June and July (closed for the month of August) but trained very little, not too many guys were in the gym because of work and other things plus I was busy too, the worst was that I did barely any running at all, I did put on some weight, naturally you would if youre not trying to stay in top shape but as a result Im back in the gym and in the mix of things, I had a slow start back in September, its been rough up until recently; I just started getting abck into running and getting back into routine, eating alot better now (this has been the toughest part, I ate sooo bad over the summer so getting abck into good eating habbits wasnt easy) so hopefully in 2-3 weeks time Ill be back at a healthy weight and strong again. As far as sparring goes I been getting alot of rounds in, im working back to 3x3 min rounds with like 20 second breaks in between, I started doing 1 on 1s with the pro coach again (starting last week and going tomorrow for some more punishment), my highest weight was 185, right now im just a tad over 175, I am guessing ill be around 169 or so at the end of this month and hopefully 165 or less after a week or two in November
I wont recap all the training i did the last few weeks but for this week:
Mon: Ran 5 miles, went to Boxing, did a 10 minute warmup with the group, made them run laps around the gym and called out different exercises for them to do, shadow boxed 2-3 rounds, sparred 3x3 rounds with a pro, then did some floor exercises
Will update later on what happens today in Boxing, so far i did my 5 mile run this morning, going to take a few more runs to get readjusted into routine again (while i work alot, starting in the morning then finishing at night, my goal is to get my runs in as early and as quick as possible)

Hey man, long time no talk, whats happening? I see you put on some mass, 186lbs now? last time i think you were like 170, nice. Hopefully training is going well on youre side, I did very mediocre training in the summer it wasnt worth posting in here, just starting to get back into it again.
Tuesday: I did my 5mile jog, at boxing we did a 20+ minute run/exercise drill around the gym, basically mixing up sprints, crossovers, that kind of thing. i did a few rounds of shadow boxing and then 2 3min rounds of sparring, I was feeling pretty tired, running and boxing together for the first time in months proves to be a challenge for now, my legs will get strong again and then it will be like nothing.
Wednesday: 5 Mile jog, went to the boxing gym to meet the professional trainer. I did 12 min shadow boxing, then we worked on things I need to improve on during the bag work which was 4x4 min rounds, basically to keep my hands infront, let the punches out, shorten them when I need to when up close and to keep my hands infront of my face on the inside, sometimes i have a habbit of having my head to foward so we really stressed on keeping myself backk
Thursday: 5 mile jog, went to boxing, shadow boxed various rounds, got in the ring, the first round the coach forgot to start the timer off the bat, so i think the first round was more like 3:30, 25 second break then went into another 3 min round. I did 2 more 3 min rounds of pure body punching, was really intense, the coach got in the ring hollering at us to keep working and keep our hands moving and turning our punches up, i was very exhausted, could barely finish the floor work after, once im back into condition everything will be smooth sailing lol
I'm currently 175lbs which is good, I been sticking to my 5 mile jogs (mon-fri only) im going to get some track work in on saturday after the gym, and an easy 3 mile jog on sunday, hopefully be 165 in the next 2 weeks
