View Full Version : importance of camp attendance(recruiting)

this is a copy-paste question i emailed to someone(didn't reply for some reason):

how many camps per summer(of junior-to-senior year) do you recommend to attend? and for example let’s say i’m going to minnesota’s football camp, are only minnesota coaches going to attend or coaches from other schools are coming too?
what if you attend 3 different camps and they don’t need prospects at that position, can other schools(since i’m email 60+ schools) offer a scholarship solely based on film? what if i’ll film every stat that i claim - as in bench, squat, power clean, vertical, 40, shuttle, height and weight, is that going to help?
i’m not talking about major d1 schools, i’m after low-end d1, every d1-aa and mid-high d2.

i'm having a hard time believing that a recruit from Tennessee that got an offer from Michigan actually went to a camp in Michigan. how important is camp presence? after all if you're contacting(initially) 60+ schools, you can't actually go to 60+ camps.
do you think that film(documented every single stat claimed) + aggressive contacting with coaches(emails, phone calls, coaches email and phone call and **** like that) = scholarship

The more camps that you go to the better. Alot of big time recruits and kids rated on rivals travel all over the country going to camps, whether it be an all-star camp/combine type deal in texas, or their favorite school. They'll go on trips where it's just one day at a camp, going from state to state, just going to talk to the coaches and show what they have.

I'm not sure how it is at every camp, but the big D1 camps that I went to had that school's coaches (say Minnesota) and then a lot of D1-AA schools close by, a good amount of D2s close by, and some D3s close by.

If you go to a camp, have a profile of yourself and highlight tapes to give to coaches, in case they see you in drills and ask you who you are, if you have a highlight, etc. (This happened throughout different camps and you want to be prepared).

Most schools won't offer a scholarship straight up just on film, especially if you're playing in Canada (no hate). They'll contact you and you usually go from there. In my case, I went to some camps, different schools showed interest after seeing me move around and show athleticism in drills, then I gave them my highlights and information, they'd email or call me and ask for game film, and then they'd let you know where you stand with them. Also, they don't want to see you bench, squat or clean or any of that, they want to see if you can play.

Lots of questions. I'll answer what i can. So, on the other coaches at camps. In my experience there are other coaches at the major D1 camps, but they are smaller d1's or d2/3's.
I'd only go to the camps you know you have a shot of going to and are within driving distance. (unless time and money play no factor)
If the schools are farther away or you just can't go to their camp, then yes, the best thing to do would be send in film and tell them about any awards you received (like all-state, all-conference) and your basic stats (height, weight, GPA, SAT/ACT).
And most camps will test you in things like the 40, broad jump, vertical, BP reps, and agility drills, so those stats can be included with the email to coaches.

So, yes your equation is possible :)

so if i can't bring film to camp i shouldn't even go? and if i'm going to camps its going to be only d1-aa and d2.

refer to above, and yes money is defiantly a factor, a big one.
I was encouraged by some teammates and my coach to go to a big-time camp in toronto which hosts big-time schools(texas, tennesse, east carolina just to name a few) but the cost and the transportation just kills it. 500$ to attend only, 360$ for a bus to there(cheapest way), and each and everyone of my teammates are going somewhere else after the camp(travel, not recruiting) so i can't hop in.

You can always drop off film to the coaches at the camps. That sounds like a big exposure camp I would say just be smart when picking those because there will be 500 others there fighting for the spot light as well and sometimes coaches like who they like so it is easy for a guy to get looked over and pretty much waste that 500$.

I would say try to pick the Sr. Only camps they are usually day camps and are a lot cheaper and sometimes also have smaller schools in attendance.

Remember its all about exposure the more you are seen the better chance you have.
Good luck bro

so you're saying to go to one(a lot) of those 1-day camps? and here i thought they were only for peewee kids.

Yes Deifinitely go to camps. I got invited to a good amount, but I did not Go due to a problem I do no want to go into. But choose wisely unless invited and getting a lot of action do not go to top 25 schools, because they already have their kids and will overlook most at the camp. Going to Minnesotas would be good. If your looking at schools in that area, so would michigan state, indiana, purdue, central michigan, western michigan etc. BUt definitely go to some if you want to have a chance to go d1.

The Senior only camps because there will be less guys so that will give you a better chance to get noticed, a chance to talk to the coaches and slide them some film, and also it will save your pocket.

i'll be straight up with you... i didn't play good my junior year, so i don't have any tape. but i'm positive i'll have a helluva season this year because in our spring game we faced the top 2 offensive lines and at DE and OLB i had an amazing game, as in maybe the best game in our league so i'm sure i can play. i was thinking about contacting coaches thru email, then again contact and say that i'm coming to their camp, then promise them film in november while being able to do official visits if they with to.

Mybad for the late reply.

But I understand where you coming from. I only started 1 full season in high school my Sr. year as well. I would say try to talk to as many coaches as you can its like talking to a chick all they can do is say no. LOL But for the most part all coaches are looking for a diamond in the ruff so stay on them through email phone convos etc. but dont go over board or sound desperate (again like talking to a chick). Just try to out do every one at the camps you do attend (be first in all the drills, Always run to where ever they say, show enthusiam, hussle, NEVER DROP your head and most importantly always be respectful it will take you a long way trust me). But It is important that you do well in your sr. year to get noticed. I know a guy who only played in 5 games his sr yr but played well and sent the tape of those 5 games to every school in the region it was like 30 schools. Got a d2 offer out of it. (free school and another 4 yrs of football)

I say attend the camps in which you have the best chance to get seen. I know kids who have went to camps with 200 people at there position, it is VERY EASY to slip through the cracks and not get any feed back or noticed.

I used to live in Mississippi and had season tickets to the Vodoo. You know Larry the wide reciever that plays on your team? Well I used to go to the PRCC games when he played for them. I went to high school near PRCC.

do you think i should email them now(before the season and camps) and introduce my self?
also, when you say never drop your head i'm assuming you mean as metaphor, right? it's kinda funny because whenever i ran full speed in a straight line i'm dropping my head to get a better forward lean(like track sprinters).
once a week i'll make sure to contact them

huge thanks,

DEFINATLEY GO TO CAMPS! All I went to was wrestling camps, never any football, since our coaching staff was changed up my last years of high school. I was relatively unknown in football, even though I had the 7th most tackles in the entire state. I got plenty of wrestling offers though, and I did get some D1 Football envited walk on and D2 Scholarship offers after the summer All-State games, and I had already signed to wrestle.

Yeah I would that way the coaches will be familiar with you and can match names and faces. It will be a lot of other kids there so you want to make sure you are remembered.

LOL I ment dont drop your head as in if you lose a one-on-one, mess up a drill, etc. dont let it get to you just have a short term memory and make up for it next time you get a chance and keep going fast.

Maybe it is different with football but with baseball camps are not about recruiting entirely. It is about getting money to the program and finding a way to pay the assistant coach and its just a bonus if they happen to discover a diamond in the rough recruit. Go to a perfect game showcase and play as many games as you can and send out tapes and letters to everybody.

Go to as many camps as you can to get as much exposure as possible.

If you go to a school's camp .... that school will be the only one attending. It's possible to have pro scouts (not sure on football because they don't draft out of high school) but the school has the camp to make money and help their program. They don't want to help any other program but their own .... it wouldn't make sense to help the competition.

A school can offer a scholarship off whatever they want as long as you are eligible. If you are going to put numbers such as weight training exercises, I would have a clip if you doing that weight. Football coaches put more emphasis on weight lifting for recruiting but don't expect that to solely get you a scholarship.

Try to go to camps that have several schools in attendance. These are going to be ran by a third party but have a greater chance for exposure. It's possible the recruit went to a camp there because they year in and year out have a good one but it's also possible that he has done well and caught the eye of the coaches.

regarding the weight numbers and speed numbers, do you think i can film them and upload it on youtube and email it to them? or do you have to dvd them? because i'll have a highlight film only after this season.

I wish I had used youtube when I was going through the process. I would definitely use youtube as a resource. Inexpensive and as long as the coach has the link he can watch it several times. Generally coaches like to see running times in person but it can at least give them an idea of what you run.
