View Full Version : Low or Mid height shoes?
Which are better for squats? Will the "mid" height really provide more stability, or is it just a matter of personal preference?

What kind of shoes are you talking about? There are a lot of shoes out there refered to as either low or mid height.

Thats what I was afraid of.
neither of those is a lifting shoe and neither is suitable to be used for weightlifting, especially squats.
You need something with a firm flat sole, Like Converse All Stars, or a purpose built weightlifting shoe.
The sole is Nike Free style, so it's really not that bad. Also, I do olympic lifts and run all in the same day along with my squats, so I can't wear Converses.

Sounds like Vibram Fivefingers would be best for your needs.
Well, even if I were to buy converses, my main question is, does added height in the shoe give more support or not?

Wow, I really am getting ignored here lately.
Oca, based on your needs, you want less support, which is why I recommended VFFs. The closer to barefoot that you come the better off you are. A lot of people like Chucks for squatting and such because of the flat, hard sole. You definitely dont want anything "squishy" or soft. In other words, typical running shoes should be out.

Or get some adidas sambas. They are pretty flat. I just upgraded my decade old sambas to a pair of kickass wrestling shoes. I wish I would have had these all along!@!!!!

If you want to run wear running shoes (or barefoot shoes) If yo want to lift wear shoes that are good for lifting. There is no shoe that is good for both. If you are an Olympic lifter you really need to be looking for a pair of weightlifting shoes. Then change for running.
I will never understand people who think they can only take one pair of shoes to the gym.

This is about the only shoe that would allow you to do everything you want to without changing, unless you want to run in chucks. these are more like armoring your bare foot than wearing a shoe though. I have got to get a pair one of these days.

Man, football offseason must have changed from when I was in high school. All we did was run and do drills.

If your coach doesn't understand the need for proper footwear for each discipline then he really shouldn't be teaching you guys to lift either. If he won't give you time to change your shoes tell him to come talk to me.
Alright, so I'll buy some Chucks, because I don't like the foot-shaped shoes. However, I went to try them on today and the 12 is too small and the 13 is too big. So, what do I do? Also, do they work for oly. lifts well enough?
