Skyrim's New Engine Detailed
A look at what's powering the next Elder Scrolls.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is going to benefit from an all-new engine, and Bethesda has detailed some of the improvements we can expect from the much-anticipated fantasy RPG.

Dubbed the Creation Engine, Skyrim's new powerhouse brings with it a suite of new tools and tricks that'll ensure this will be Bethesda's most technically impressive game to date.

"The big things for us were to draw a lot of stuff in the distance so we have a really sophisticated level of detail, more so than what we've had in the past for how things stream in and how detail gets added to them as they get closer to the camera," Bethesda Studio's creative director Todd Howard told Game Informer.

"Because our worlds are so big all of the lighting has to be dynamic," he said. "That's something we had a little bit of in the past with shadowing, but not on everything. Now we have it on everything. It just makes the whole thing a lot more believable when you're there."

The visual pass carries on to the minutiae of Skyrim's world; as it's set in a more Northern region that Oblivion's Cyrodiil, there'll be a more severe climate and the Creation Engine is well-equipped to deal with snow and rock-faces, while the foliage benefits from a bespoke engine for Skyrim's trees.

The improvements stretch beyond the visuals, and Skyrim's AI also promises to be a step up. The overhauled Radiant AI will deliver more believable NPC behaviour , with distinctive personalities being played out in the actions of Skyrim's inhabitants.

There'll also look more believable than before thanks to the implementation of Havok Behavior. "I think we're the first real big game to use it," boasted Howard, before explaining what the tech brings to the game. All this can be generated based on where the character is, who he's met. They can conditionalize that someone who you've done a quest for before wants someone assassinated, and the target could be someone with whom you've spent a lot of time before."

Skyrim is down for release on November 11 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, and we'll have much more on the game for you over the coming months.

I have it in my cart and just haven't gotten around to placing the order.

It's definitely a game which caters to certain people. If you're not a fan of a challenge and depth in your games it probably isn't you.

It's fantastic because it makes you work for your enjoyment. The challenge is so refreshing - the game isn't so much about getting from point A to B but instead, learning to get from A to B. Every single section of a level has a niche way of surviving it, every enemy has a different strategy and every boss battle is pretty much epic.

It's the only games I've actually bothered to get all the achievements for - simply because I enjoyed it so much.

recently got FF7 off PSN a few months ago and beat it, killed the weapons and everything. even now, I still give it a 10/10. I bought Grandia and FF8 though and I felt they were a waste of cash.

to be honest though, the only PS1 game I got off PSN that wasn't a waste was FF7, because you can just play all of them and more on an emulator on your PC.

Yes, as far as story missions/characters etc. It doesn't come with some weapon/armor packs though. Not really important however.

also, is it just me or does the controller not matter to anyone else? if i played on xbox 360 most of the time i'd be used to an xbox controller and vise-versa. i don't really see the point in getting an xbox 360 replica controller unless you're so used to that setup where you can't play with a ps3 controller. i heard a youtube commentator talking about how no fps game is going to rival the call of duty series because the controls are so fluid but someone argued that they feel that way just because we're so used to them. anything you play for a certain amount of time will feel comfortable and other things that aren't like it feel very clunky (how i felt when i bought battlefield bad company 2)

In short: Keys were hacked for the ps3 so now its basically "Jailbroken" to say the least. Sony is suing the guy but really I don't see them winning. Recently, a lot of online games have been dealing with hackers and codes being online.

Quoting a poster from an extensive thread about the situation:

As the judge is likely to have no clue what anyone is talking about in this case, he is going to look back to previous, similar cases for a legal precedent, and the most recent, and similar is going to be the case that Apple LOST over the jailbreaking of iPhones.

If courts can tell Apple that there is no way they can use "Possiblity for piracy" as a defence against jailbreaking the iPhone, and that in fact jailbreaking an iPhone is now perfectly legal, then there is no possible way that they can say that Sony, who are using the same reason to sue Geohot, are in the right.

I think someone posted that the only fix to this is to replace the hardware. Rumors are going around that the next firmware update will brick Ps3's that have been jail broken but who knows.

Almost all connections cannot just be port blocked, the port will continue to increment until it connects, you have to block the entire domains. Also a big point is that ALL computers on your network need to have these blocked not just the PS3's MAC because if you are running a proxy for example to get patches, the computer you proxy to will just allow the connections right out to the open unless all local IPs are blocked from these sites as well.

For years, EFF has been warning that the anti-circumvention provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act can be used to chill speech, particularly security research, because legitimate researchers will be afraid to publish their results lest they be accused of circumventing a technological protection measure. We've also been concerned that the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act could be abused to try to make alleged contract violations into crimes.


We've never been sorrier to be right. These two things are precisely what's happening in Sony v. Hotz. If you have missed this one, Sony has sued several security researchers for publishing information about security holes in Sony’s PlayStation 3. At first glance, it's hard to see why Sony is bothering — after all, the research was presented three weeks ago at the Chaos Communication Congress and promptly circulated around the world. The security flaws discovered by the researchers allow users to run Linux on their machines again — something Sony used to support but recently started trying to prevent. Paying lawyers to try to put the cat back in the bag is just throwing good money after bad. And even if they won — we'll save the legal analysis for another post — the defendants seem unlikely to be able to pay significant damages. So what's the point?


The real point, it appears, is to send a message to security researchers around the world: publish the details of our security flaws and we'll come after you with both barrels blazing. For example, Sony has asked the court to immediately impound all "circumvention devices" — which it defines to include not only the defendants' computers, but also all "instructions," i.e., their research and findings. Given that the research results Sony presumably cares about are available online, granting the order would mean that everyone except the researchers themselves would have access to their work.



Not content with the DMCA hammer, Sony is also bringing a slew of outrageous Computer Fraud and Abuse Act claims. The basic gist of Sony's argument is that the researchers accessed their own PlayStation 3 consoles in a way that violated the agreement that Sony imposes on users of its network (and supposedly enabled others to do the same). But the researchers don't seem to have used Sony's network in their research — they just used the consoles they bought with their own money. Simply put, Sony claims that it's illegal for users to access their own computers in a way that Sony doesn't like. Moreover, because the CFAA has criminal as well as civil penalties, Sony is actually saying that it's a crime for users to access their own computers in a way that Sony doesn't like.


That means Sony is sending another dangerous message: that it has rights in the computer it sells you even after you buy it, and therefore can decide whether your tinkering with that computer is legal or not. We disagree. Once you buy a computer, it's yours. It shouldn't be a crime for you to access your own computer, regardless of whether Sony or any other company likes what you're doing.



Finally, even if the researchers had used Sony's network, Sony's claim that it's a crime to violate its terms of use has been firmly rejected by courts in cases like United States v. Drew and Facebook v. Power Ventures. As those courts have recognized, companies like Sony would have tremendous coercive power if they could enforce their private, unilateral and easy-to-change agreements with threats of criminal punishment.



Sony's core arguments — that it can silence speech that reveals security flaws using the DMCA and that the mere fact of a terms of use somewhere gives a company permanent and total control over what you do with a device under pain of criminal punishment — are both sweeping and frightening, and not just for gamers and computer researchers. Frankly, it's not what we expect from any company that cares about its customers, and we bet it's not what those customers expect, either.

Did you ever play mass effect 1? It seems to have more action than the first one even though of course there are still many cutscenes and dialogues. However you can skeep most of the dialogue.

Did you ever play mass effect 1? It seems to have more action than the first one even though of course there are still many cutscenes and dialogues. However you can skeep most of the dialogue.

Also the graphics are improved since the demo, game looks beautiful.

if the device id is stored in ROM then it can't be changed, thats how original xboxes were kept off live once banned

i haven't/don't plan on jailbreaking because i use psn a lot. basically if you do JB the chances of you getting banned from PSN in the near future is almost certain

Isn't the "hack" closely similar to acquiring administration pass to the system? I've read that the only way for Sony to resolve this issue is to replace the actual hardware. I guess it can render a few "jail break" hacks here and there but the people knowledgeable about the subject can always get around it (and release newer jail break methods).

From what I hear, the hackers did it to retrieve Other OS. They didnt intentionally do it to pirate games or to hack games. But I guess its an indirect effect by hacking the system to retrieve Other OS.

There is supposedly a 15 minute interactive comic book to take care of that issue. I doubt it carries everything over (there is a ton of things that carry over), but it hits all of the major points.

ME1 was a decent game but I feel like ME2 is better in every way. ME1 i couldn't wait for it to be over, whereas I didn't want ME2 to end.

You can get ME1 for like 5 bucks right now though, if you have the time it's not a terrible idea to play that first.

not so simple... the official keys sony uses to sign software as legit have been leaked, they can't just change them to new values or all existing software won't run. so any homebrew code written by anyone can be officially signed and it looks legit to the ps3 (once you modify your firmware to add the install packages option)

they'll have to maintain a db of all "legit" software signed with the old keys, or release updates for every single game/app on the psn after re-signing them. this would also include a firmware update the pushes the new keys to the ps3

i'm sure sony will figure it out eventually, but the system is wide open at this point. at the very least i'm sure anyone who JBs will be banned from psn

Not really. For normal use, 60-80 gb is plenty unless you're the type who installs a bunch of games on your PS3 then never freakin plays them.

120gb is a good amount of storage for saves/games/installs/etc. Hell, I was okay with a 40gb for a while and I have like 25 PSN games and a decent amount of game saves + installs. Main reason I upgraded was cuz I knew I wanted to start storing large amounts of movies and music on my PS3.

I know what you are referring to with the UDID, but this is not what happened for this hack...

basically for every blu ray, psn game ,etc.... when they are finished coding them and have their binaries compiled they submit it to sony, who then sign (encrypt) the binaries with a set of keys. once signed, it tells the ps3 "this game/app is legit" and the ps3 allows it to run

nope, 360 was hacked via an exploit that let you run unsigned code. it was reported to MS and patched via firmware update

the dvd rom custom firmware hack still exists, but all that lets you do is run backups of already signed retail discs and only on older drives

An HD reworking of the original Metal Gear Solid trilogy is on the way to PS3, according to 'insider whispers' heard by the ears of the UK's Official PlayStation Magazine.

In the mag's new issue, in stores now, it reports that Snake is "in the facelift queue", and that the "first three" MGS games are set to be reborn in High Definition.

No details of release window, price or whether the trilogy will be a boxed or digital product are given.

However, any reworking of Kojima-san's much-loved original trio will be music to the ears of PlayStation nuts, with the games still very much considered classics of the genre.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots is currently the only MGS title to be released for PS3. It enjoys a very healthy 94 per cent average review score on Metacritic. Could it be joined by its predecessors in full HD later this year?

This makes it so hard for Sony to gamers with backup managers to detect and block. The idea is that soon every Blu-ray disc, disc with a unique number, comes with a serial key. These 'serial-key then works then only with its Blu-ray disc with matching number.

So it will soon be so should work, that when you a game buys and PlayStation 3 do, you activate it with your 'serial-key "and thus a call to Sony to show that you are authorized for that game play on your PlayStation 3. Reportedly, any 'serial-key may be used only five times, as many PlayStation Store downloads. About 10 minutes into the game.

Stock is 9mm thick, the WD I used was 12.5mm and was tight... As long as it's not thicker it should work.

MGS is probably my favorite all time franchise and to play the first 3 on ps3 would be heavenly. The return to Shadow Moses in the last one brought back so many memories, probably one of the best video game moments for me ever. Feel like playing it again right now to be honest.

Guys just got the PS3 Slim cuz fat one is dying. Since there is no on/off switch, do I have to take it off the outlet everytime I stop playing? Or leaving it there(with red light on/standby mode) wont hurt it even for days?

from what i've read it's fine to just leave it in. i always leave it unplugged when i'm not playing to be on the safe side though
