So yeah. 1st Figure Competition - the Chamberlain Cup, Sept 18th 2010.

I wanted to keep a log of my efforts, progress, and such during the next few weeks in hopes of getting some feedback and venting frustrations. I'm totally new to this and do not have a formal coach so I'll be learning along the way.

Starting weight: 163lbs
Approx bf%: 23%

EDIT: New game plan - shooting for the Gold's Classic on 10/30. It's 20 weeks out as of today (6/8). That way I'll have a better chance at getting down to ~12% so I don't look like a fool on stage.

What my routine looks like right now:

Sun: OFF
Mon: chest, tris, cardio
Tues: AM cardio
Wed: back, bis, cardio
Thurs: AM cardio
Fri: legs, shoulders, cardio
Sat: AM cardio

Diet:
1650 cals - 40/30/30 split (mostly eggs, chicken, tuna, brown rice, oats, whey, veggies)

So far the diet's been pretty good - minimal crankiness, hunger, etc.

I've been pretty lax about getting in decent cardio after workouts lately (especially on leg days) but that's gotta change now since I'm not seeing changes quickly enough - I'm 14 weeks out - jeebus this is going fast.

My cheat meals (Saturday nights typcally) have been fairly conservative and mostly clean (no chili cheese dogs, or similar crap). I might have to cut back on them soon as I have never had a bodyfat % below what I am now (~23%) and I don't know what it's going to take to get my body to competition level.

I started dieting at 20 weeks out and have already seen some freaking awesome changes - my delts, tris, traps, and bis are really popping and I'm finding new veins in my forearms every week. My hammies are peaking, too.

I start tanning tomorrow as well. I have a lot of vacations planned and spend a lot of time by my pool so I thought that a tanning membership would help me keep the tan lines to a minimum until the comp.

That's all for now, but I'll be increasing my cardio session to 40 mins tonight and will be working on setting in gear for my suit - any suggestions in that regard would be much appreciated!

1st!! Woot!

My first observation is that you have a lot of cardio for 14 weeks out. Especially at ~1600 cals.

Although I'm used to leaning out via diet, not cardio (like many competitors do).

So should I cut back? Granted the cardio's been pretty easy and light lately...

I'm so afraid I'm not going to be lean enough in time.

Well you are starting at a higher weight than I was (granted, you most likely have more muscle than I do too, lol).

I would rather try and manipulate my weight loss with diet, and use cardio as a finishing touch.

So in total it's about 40 mins of LISS 3x/week? That's not bad. I wouldn't change it until about 8 weeks out as long as you continue to drop fat.

I'd also suggest maybe firing a PM to Kim just to make sure you're starting off at the right spot.

What's your diet like? Do you mind posting details?

I've been doing 30 mins of cardio 3x/week (if I remember to do it, oops!) but last night I kicked it to 40mins and was a cranky bitch after. I was pissed off, hungry, could barely sleep, and woke up starving maybe 3 times last night. Now, I'm tired as hell this AM even after my cup of coffee.

I know that my cals are low as it is, and increasing cardio might do more harm than good at 14 weeks out. I'll check in with Kim.

What's your diet like? Do you mind posting details?

Meal 1: 2 eggs, 1/2 cup oats with 1 tbsp honey, 1 cup coffee, animal pak
Meal 2: 1 scoop whey
Meal 3: 3 oz chicken, 1 cup brown rice
Meal 4: 3 oz chicken, 1 cup brown rice
Meal 5: 1/2 cup oats, 1 tbsp honey, 1 banana
Meal 6: 1 scoop whey
~1650 cals

I always workout between Meal 5 and Meal 6

The diet has been sweet so far - I've actually had some gains in the gym and haven't had the typical brain fog, crankiness, etc that usually come with cuts. Sure, I'm not totally satisfied after my meals (as in I could eat more ;)), but for the most part my body's liked it.

It was only last night that I was bitchy/cranky as hell. I can do 30 mins of cardio 3x a week with no problem, but I feel as if it should be "harder" than that, ya know?

I feel as if I'm not doing enough if that makes sense - hence the urge to do more cardio.

For posterity's sake, here's a total breakdown of my current diet:

BMR = .9 x 75kg x 1.65 = 2673 cals (maintenance)
- 1000 cals (cut)
------------
~1700 cals

A 40/30/30 split gives me:
680 carb calories / 4 = 170 grams of carbs
510 protein calories / 4 = 127.5 g of protein
510 fat calories / 9 = 56 g of fat

(I have a feeling that my LBM is around 131-ish lbs so I've been trying to sneak in a few extra grams of protein lately)

Typical menu (sometimes if I get sick of chicken, I'll sub in tuna but I'll manipulate into identical macros)

Meal 1: 2 eggs (with 2 tbsp EVOO), 1/2 cup oats, 1 tbsp honey, 1 cup coffee (with creamer)
Meal 2: 1 scoop ON whey with water
Meal 3: 3 oz chicken, 1 cup brown rice
Meal 4: 3 oz chicken, 1 cup brown rice
Meal 5: 1/2 cup oats with 1 tbsp honey
Meal 6: 1 scoop ON whey with water

This puts me at ~2lbs loss per week which is probably too much so I added the items that I put in italics to tweak my numbers a bit. I'd like to hold onto as much muscle as I can.

This is what I have NOW:
1906 cals, 60.3g fat, 248g carbs, 133.2g protein

The carbs seem very high. I don't know if that would be a problem...I'll look into it. Perhaps I could bite the bullet and eat the oats without the honey... eliminating the honey altogether would give me:

1786 cals, 60.3g fat, 214g carbs, 133.2g protein - which looks much better.

Siiiigh... I think I just talked myself out of my favorite "treat" next to the coffee...

I need more greens obviously, and I try to fit them in as I can, but it's a day-by-day basis. For instance, my parents grilled some asparagus last night and I nommed on a few stalks instead of eating the last bites of my pre-workout oatmeal, and I got the hell down on some broccoli this past weekend (broccoli is one of my favorite foods).

EDIT: per advice from others, I should be looking at 4 training sessions per week, not 3.

Changes made to my routine:
Sun: Upper body
Mon: Lower body
Tues: OFF
Wed: Upper body
Thurs: Lower body
Fri: OFF
Sat: OFF

I need Tuesdays/nights for pre-planned stuff, and my weekend travel plans are such that this will work well for me. I also believe that I'll be able to handle hitting everything twice a week rather than once. If I need to make adjustments, I will, but I have extra BCAAs at the ready if I need em!

I'll keep the same exercises that my boyfriend gave me, I'll just re-arrange them accordingly:

Upperbody day - Sunday:
5x5 bench
3x12 incline bench
3x12 cable pushdowns
3xfailure bodyweight dips

Upperbody day - Wednesday:
5x5 cable rows
3x12 BB rows
3x12 BB curls
3x12 hammer curls
3x12 lateral raises
3x12 military press

Lowerbody day - Monday:
5x5 ATG squats
3x12 leg press
3x12 leg extensions

Lowerbody day - Thursday:
5x5 deadlift
3x12 RDLs
3x12 leg curls

I think that if you manipulate your diet a little more (increase protein, increase fat, change your carb sources) you can get away with more calories and not feel cranky. I didn't start feeling tired and hungry due to less calories until MAYBE 5 weeks out. You do NOT want to feel this way with so far to go.

I would definitely try to get at least 2-4 cups of veggies in a day. Not only will this help to fill you up, the fibre will help your body to not retain water.

Also, not sure if you have this where you live, but SugarTwin makes a sugar-free brown sugar that I use on my oats. (http://www.sugartwin.com/pi.cfm ---> looks like you have it in the states).

You can also think about mixing your oats with 1 egg and 1C egg whites and cooking it like a pancake (doing this will also increase your protein). Then use some light syrup and it's such a treat! I also put some vanilla extract in.

For you upper body day - are you going to be doing ALL of that in ONE workout?!

It was only after I added more cardio that I felt cranky :D So scratch that idea - I'll add more cardio later if I need to.

So new game plan - I edited my OP.

My biggest, grossest fear is that I look like a fool on stage so I'm going to compete in the Gold's Classic on 10/30/2010 instead of the Chamberlain Cup on 9/18. It's 20 weeks away and given my current stats, it'll give me a better chance at actually hitting ~12% bodyfat. Those extra 6 weeks will make a world of a difference and my efforts so far will not be in vain :)

So, I took some pics since I get to start from the beginning again:

The first two (of me in the bikini) are from last July. The last two are from just a few mins ago. I can't believe how much mass I've put on since then - especially in my legs. Sorry about the ****ty clothed pics - I don't have a photographer at the moment....I'll get my boyfriend to take some bikini pics this weekend. Yesterday went much better than Monday - I slept like a baby last night, was in a good mood and wasn't hungry at all - save for those pangs every two hours or so which tells me that my metabolism is moving. I really think that I'll stick to 30 mins of LISS cardio after workouts 3 or 4 times a week TOPS....otherwise I won't be able to stick this - I felt like such **** on Monday and I know it was from the extra HIIT cardio.

Tuesday nights are my main socialization nights so I rested yesterday. I get together with some girls at the local coffee shop to chill, knit, drink, yannow - girl stuff. Well, I walk up to the tables outside and the one's having a mixed coffee drink with a piece of pizza and another is eating chinese. It ****ing sucked because I had just finished my oats+water (and no honey) and was left thoroughly unsatisfied, but hey - I've chosen to do this so I'm going to do it. It did smell heavenly though....

I also ran the new workout plan that I constructed yesterday by my boyfriend/trainer and he liked the split. We refined it a bit so I'm hitting different leg muscles on opposite lowerbody days. I'll also be doing weighted ab work and calf raises on those 4 days. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I have pretty sick calves (probably 80% genes, though) and want to refine them as much as I can.

I forgot to pack my 10 AM scoop of whey today and I feel like a turd.

I'm starting my new workout routine this Sunday so I stuck with my old Wednesday routine:

1x5 deadlift @ 95#
1x5 @ 115#
5x5 @ 135# - these were tough, my grip sucks, definitely need to work on this during the off-season

3x12 cable rows @ 90#

3x12 BB rows @ 70#

3x12 BB curls @ 30#

3x12 hammer curls @ 12.5# (my bis were dead LOL)

30 mins LISS cardio

Diet was spot-on yesterday and I felt really, really good - I'm beginning to "feel" leaner which put me in a good mood. I was pumped all day to hit the gym. As I was moving the weights around yesterday I noticed that my traps and delts are much thicker than I thought. :D

I'm beginning to daydream about my cheat meal on Saturday...I think my boyfriend and I are going to grill some burgers with carmelized onions and mushrooms. The thought definitely made it easier to choke down my plain oats this morning :)

Thursday June 10, 2010

I want to start my new split on Sunday and wasn't going to hit the gym yesterday originally, but I realized that my shoulders wouldn't have had any work this week if I carried on my normal schedule so I hit 'em hard last night:

3x12 military press
3x12 lateral raises
3x12 front raises
5x5 military press

30 mins LISS cardio

I can't get over what a difference I'm seeing in my body already - I feel like I'm finding new bumps everyday! Granted I've been at this diet for 4 weeks already, but there's been very noticeable changes in my body and not just numbers changing on the scale. I could not stop checking myself out in the mirrors last night!

My delts and traps looked killer last night and my tummy's thinning out a lot more quickly than expected - my little brother even made a comment about my bis and tris as I was unscrewing my whey tub last night and it completely made my day. Hopefully I see abs soon.

This diet has me feeling so "clean" that I don't know if I want to have a small cheat meal on Saturday night as my cheat meal last week left me feeling gross and sluggish. Maybe I'll try to keep it as clean as I can...

Here's to the weekend, brahs! I'm stoked to start the new split on Sunday...

You know, you don't necessarily have to have a "cheat". You could do a "refeed" where you up your good carbs. I'd try googling it, or check out Pauline Nordin's Fighter Diet website. She does refeeds.

Yeah....looked into that and refeeds once a week is what I'll probably do since mentally I don't need any cheats and don't really need em otherwise...

Although I did notice through searching threads that my carbs probably need to come down a fair amount - like 50/60g. I'll have to tweak things.

I feel like a bi-polar turd. Tweaked the diet:

1701 calories, 64.3g fat, 181g carbohydrates, 135.5g protein

M1: 2 eggs, 1/2 cup oats
M2: 1 scoop ON whey
M3: 3 oz chicken, 1/2 cup brown rice
M4: 3 oz chicken, 1/2 cup brown rice
M5: 1 egg, 1/2 cup oats
M6: 1 scoop ON whey

Ok for real now I think that's better.

I'm thinking I'm going to take Nori's advice about refeeds, but being that I've been eating about 215g carbs a day this week, I doubt eating a bit more than that would shock my body so I think I'll go with a conservative, clean cheat meal tomorrow.

I hate math, man.

Yeah, if you're going to start incorporating refeeds you need to drop your regular carb intake a lot lower. Refeeds are typically only useful on low carb diets (100g or less/day). Otherwise you could go the route of a good carb cycling routine, I tend to like that format best.
Just experiment, see how your body reacts to different amounts. Its all about figuring out what works best for YOU! :D

Found it!

At 5'8 and 163 you can take the harris benedict formula to get 1562 calories as your BMR, and multiply that by activity factor (assuming moderate activity = 1.55) which gives you aprox 2420 as your maintenence level.... starting out I usually subtract 500 calories which would be around 1900 calories.

Of course it all depends on how your metabolism is, also... But in otherwords, no, 1700 is not too much at this point. You aren't competing for a long while, correct?

No gym time on Friday or Saturday, but kept with the diet save for a sweet cheat meal Saturday night. I've decided that it'll be my last before the competition and I'll have little refeeds here and there as I need em.

Saturday my boyfriend and I threw together some burgers on the grill - worked some dijon mustard, salt and pepper into some ground beef, topped them with Jarlesburg cheese, carmelized onions, and some greens that were dressed with a garlic and dijon vinegarette. I grilled some asparagus too.

I remember sitting at the table after eating the burger (okay, I inhaled it...) and feeling really drunk (?!). Really weird.

Earlier in the day he and I had been at an epic World Cup party with plenty of booze and epic food (the hostess is an incredible cook ;)) and it was so hard to resist all the goodies, but I did. Summertime is my favorite time of the year and little backyard get-togethers like that are what I look forward to most so this will be tough - I guess I'm just going to have to change my outlook on the summer parties altogether and bring my knitting to keep my hands occupied and my mind off of what I can't have.

Anyway, up early to get back on the cut on Sunday and hit the gym. Even after last night's cheat I'm looking decent this morning - my hands are a little puffy, but I still have the definition that's developing in my arms, thank god. :) I'm digging the little grooves everywhere.

5x5 ATG squats (hell yeah baby)
3x12 leg press
3x10 leg extensions (I can probably up these next week)

30 mins LISS cardio (yes, I was dead)

Felt like crap today. I was thinking that it was just an "off" day until I realized that my body's, ahem, cycle is totally off now. Like, totally. Completely. WTF. I didn't think that this would happen until much later down the line.

Then I had to hear stupid frikken comments from my father tonight before I headed out to the gym. I helped my mom make some sweet chicken breasts on the grill with asparagus and a grain salad but, of course, I didn't partake in the meal - I did sit with them though.

I got the whole, "What, you're not eating dinner?"
"Oh, you ate oats, my bad, we are eating rather unhealthily, aren't we?"
"WTF are you doing to your body?!"

Blah, blah, blah.

My parents are overweight (not terribly, but still) and incredibly out of shape but do eat healthily - it's their portions that need controlling. It just pisses me off that he makes comments while he hasn't looked his best in years and bitches about how his back hurts him (ok so fukcing do some deadlifts - oh that's right, he doesn't have time ). I guess this is really no different than anyone else's experience though...

Thank god my boyfriend understands and supports me. Seriously.

Sorry to get emo. I'm just mad at the world right now. My legs are gonna be dead tomorrow however, and that feels good. :)

I rocked out to Gaga tonight. I'm a chick, cut me a break.

Keep your head held high... It's really hard and a lot of people don't understand our "lifestyle"

My girl of 5 years understands but she has never been around me during a prep. But even now, I'm eating rather clean. But she is cooking cupcakes right now but she isn't upset if I don't eat any. lol

But I told her, during my 16 weeks I will be a cranky lil bitch lol She doesn't even really like the way that I will look when I step on stage.. But she knows it means a ton to me and it's something I want to do. She doesn't love my lifestyle but she accepts it and that is good enough to me. I don't force anything on her.

But just keep grinding it out and you'll do awesome. Just don't let things get to you..

The bad news is it doesn't really get any better, parents will be parents...the good news is by the time you get down to 12% bf you wont really care if they think you're being healthy or not :) just try not to kill them when you carb deplete between now and then ;)

Not much to report as yesterday was a rest day, but I did have to give in and get a Diet Coke at about 1PM yesterday at work. I never drink sodas - never - but I needed a bit of caffeine and it actually really picked me up. Yesterday dragged by but I think it was for reasons other than the diet.

Last night was my night in town with the girls. Hope and Deb went down the street to get eggrolls at one point and I felt like a hungry begging dog, but I kept remembering Tola calling me Ms Olympia earlier in the night and I was okay :D (thanks, Tola!)

So frikken stoked for RDLs tonight!

The first time I ever did an RDL was last year with my Velocity trainer, Trey. Here I am, busting my ass on the platform with sweat pouring down my arms, while he's shaking his ass like a stripper to "Salt Shaker"....it's the weirdest memory ever as he's a 5'8", 220 lb swole black man. But, he said my hammies had too much potential to not do RDLs and after that I was hooked on them.

I just bought a scale on my lunch break. I've never owned one in my life.

I've been weighing myself at work and the gym but I can't really go by what those scales say because I only get on them at the end of the day or I already have a few meals in me.

I hate scales, but whatever.

My jeans are especially loose today.

This particular pair has always had some room to spare in the waist, but the hips were a different story... (thanks mom )

They're low on my hips now and the butt area's getting too big too

Bahahah but the legs are a different story. :D

5x5 deadlift
3x10 cable row
3x12 BB row
3x10 reverse fly
3x12 shrugs
3x12 BB curls
3x12 hammer curls

30 mins LISS cardio

I struggled through the deads and cable rows last night. Struggled. It was rather pathetic. I think it was because I cut 50g of carbs out of the diet the day before, though...50g makes a big difference! I did get a second wind though after the cable rows and tried to exhaust my back - hence the flys and shrugs (which i don't normally do).

I hurt my back doing deads last night. No frikken idea how I did it as I always am a Nazi about my deading and sqatting form, but my lower back was in a lot of pain during my BB rows. I toughed it out, but I'm in pain this morning still. I popped a few ibprofen and plan on putting a heating pad on it this afternoon, but I gotta just suck it up and buy a belt and some stupid wraps already....I don't know why I keep stalling on that.

So, we'll have to see about RDLs and SLDLs tonight - I don't want to injure myself. I might just do my hammie curls and hit my calves tonight if my back doesn't improve by lunchtime - you should have seen me getting in and out of bed last night! Freaking riot.

Anyway - I'm down 4lbs in 2 weeks!

What kind of weight are you throwing around? Also why have you already cut out so many carbs from your intake (or are you carb cycling and I missed it...you want to give it time to cut them out otherwise you're going to come in depleted by the time of your show). Sucks about the injury too...you can never be to careful with deads.

yeah, I should include weights, shouldn't I? :D
Deads - 150#
Cable rows - 90#
BB row - 80#
Rev Flys - 30#
Shrugs - 50# DBs
BB curls - 45# (bis were DEAD)
Hammer curls - 20# (again, bis were dead)

I should have my carbs around 170g/day but they were around 240g/day for a bit. I switched the menu around so I was getting a true 40/30/30 split instead of 50/25/25 :D

I think I'm just adjusting to the lower carbs to be honest...I'm gonna stick with 170g of carbs while I still see that scale moving. I'll start cycling when progress stalls. And yeah, my back is ****ing killing me today :(

So total fail day. My back was KILLING me still so no lifts last night - just a heating pad, some ibprofen, and lots of water and BCAAs. It helped a lot and I'm at about 80% today - will be 100% in time for Sunday's workout.

I really, really, really need to get a belt and pay closer attention to my form. Although I will say that I probably wouldn't have been in pain yesterday if my gym wasn't run by a bunch of pussies and let me use chalk and make some noise when I lower the bar (not drop, lower! they get their little pink panties in a bunch over little clinks of the weights) I was trying too hard to not make any noise at all and I think that's what the problem was... I really need to think about getting a membership somewhere else for my off season.

I did work on posing for about 30 mins yesterday and I think I have my music narrowed down to a few possible songs. I really should get my clear heels so I can start practicing in those....

My arms are looking really good - a LOT better than I expected, actually. :) And my lats are gonna look pretty decent, too. My pecs? Yeaaah, they're gonna have to get hit hard in the off season because there's too much ribage showing for my taste :o

I swear I'll get pics this weekend - PROMISE.

Anywho, feeling good considering the diet. Still alert and happy but a little hungry. :(

Have the whole family coming over on Sunday for Father's Day brunch. I'm making blueberry muffins, banana muffins, limoncello, honey/vanilla pound cake, quiches, etc. Yeah, yeah, I know I can't eat it, but I love baking and sometimes smelling and seeing awesome food is enough to satisfy me. I'm planning a small refeed on Saturday night, though so I will get a little pick-me-up :)

Won't be logging any workouts until Monday though since my boyfriend is in town and my spare time will be spent cooking, working out or in my pool since it's going to be a gorgeous weekend

Nah, it's a gym that started as a physical therapy/rehab place and expanded into a gym. It's frequented by a$$hole lawyers, snobby housewives, and old people. One of those gyms, yannow?

There's a small group of regular lifters but they stick to the benches  and I rarely see people doing squats in the racks. Come to think of it I think I'm the only one that ever deadlifts.

Had a bad day yesterday. Everyone was pissing me off - from the skin-and-bones chick that was playing around on the leg press machine WITH NO WEIGHT () when I needed it, to my mother who made me take my miserable little brother to the gym, to my little brother that paced the weight area as I was trying to do work and bitched that he didn't wanna be there (I was hoping he'd just walk the **** home FFS), to the customers at work that think that they can treat me with disrespect, to the disgusting old men that stare at me at the gym....I could go on forever.

My vacation cannot come soon enough....10 days, but who's counting? I actually found a gym within walking distance to my shore house that has a reasonable weekly rate so I am stoked about that. Last summer I was doing a lot of running on the beach first thing in the AM and I think that I'll do that again this year although I'll have to jog instead of run because I haven't run a step since last August :o. I'll jog in the AM, sit on the beach all day, and then hit the gym in the evenings. Tough life, eh? :)

3x15 front squats.

Front Squat

AKA, for every rep of front squat you do, you do 3 reps of back squat.

1x 10-12 front squat

1x 10-12 leg curl
1x 10-12 front squat

1x 10-12 leg curl
1x 10-12 front squat

1x 10-12 front squat
All to failure.

Front/Back squat

Bring a bucket. You will be throwing up.

e:/ If you're not conditioned enough to the squat to attempt this yet try this program:

Week 1;

30x10 Squat. (you can alternate between front and back squat equally or simply stick to one or the other)

Week 2;

50x10

Week 3;

70x10

Week 4;

increase weights and start again, 30x10, etc. and so on.

Was a rest day.

But, I cheated last night. I just needed to. Ehh maybe you could call it a refeed because I only went 100 cals over, but spiked my carbs. I had a half of a bagel with cream cheese and a plum with lemonade instead of my 5th/6th meal of an egg with 1/2 oats and a scoop of whey.

I needed it for my mental health. Not going to get into why.

Thoughts: I need to constantly remind myself that I have no control over other people. Be it comparing my physique to another competitor's, be it what my friends and loved ones are up to, etc. The only thing that I have control over is what I do, say and think. My actions are mine alone, and so are my inactions. I am not responsible for another's happiness or unhappiness. I am not responsible for their success or failure.

I have a say in how my life turns out and I am the only one responsible for my success. I am the only one responsible for my happiness. I am the only one responsible for my progress.

Good mental approach, tbh everything falls into place when you reach that point of focus and understand that you can't save the world, you can only do what's in your power to make yourself a more positive person and hope that it rubs off on other people. It also helps to eliminate negative people from your life as the whole concept of psychic vampires (though it sounds fruity) is definitely a real scenario.

Keep your head up kiddo, pummel them weights.

Deadlifts (was conservative with these yesterday since my lower back was still a little off from last week - they felt really good, but time to get back on track with em next week!):
1x5 @ 45#
1x5 @ 115#
5x5 @ 135#

BB Rows:
1x12 @ 45#
1x12 @ 55#
3x12 @ 65#
(squeezed these hard and focused on the contraction and form, feels good, man)

Cable rows:
1x5 @ 70#
1x5 @ 80#
1x5 @ 90#
1x5 @ 100#
1x5 @ 90#
1x5 @ 80#
1x5 @ 70#
(took these slow and concentrated on contraction and form - they made me sweat like a horse)

Rev Flys:
1x12 @ 15#
1x12 @ 17.5#
3x12 @ 15#

BB Curls:
1x12 @ 25#s
1x12 @ 35#s
3x12 @ 25#s

25 mins LISS cardio.

I failed with the cardio. I was going to go for 40 mins but I started crying on the treadmill and figured that I had had enough for the day and went to sit in the steam room to decompress. I never ****ing cry in public - I was pretty embarrassed.

I was working on posing in the mirrors between sets and I had a sick lat and trap pump last night, though. That helped my spirits a little. I think that my body is right on track so far - lats are coming out more and my shoulders and upper back are looking pretty damn good for me. I found another huge vein in my left arm and even one that will probably pop up between my delt and pec. I also have the beginning of veins on my hips/lower abs. It'll be sick to see what they do once I get my bodyfat low enough - I'm thinking that I have the potential to be very vascular - there's ugly blue veins near the surface everywhere! I've never seen these suckers before.

My legs are a different story, though. They're developed muscularly, but they're definitely going to be the last to lean out - I'm getting impatient with them actually. Frikken genes. My body is a carbon copy of my mother's - typical mesomorph - but she's got that stubborn fat on her legs and so do I. I suppose that this is usually where women lose fat last, but it's pissing me off

But, that scale keeps dropping (mostly in spurts) so i can't really say crap. In fact, it dropped after the cheat meal yesterday and I was like . Meh. Maybe it's what I needed.

Yesterday was one of the worst days I've had in recent memory. I've had my fair share of insane adversity in my life, but this **** is different. I'm really stuck between a rock and a hard place right now. I'm unsure if I should regret recent personal decisions, but also more afraid of the consequences if I hadn't made that particular decision.

I hate decisions that need to be made between the lesser of two evils as they never seem fair to anyone involved. I've never been one for tough love at all - in fact, I tend to spoil and baby my friends and loved ones. It's just the way that I show my love and appreciation, I guess. One of my pet peeves are enabling behaviors from others so when I saw myself behaving in such a way, I had to put my money where my mouth was and put a stop to it. This is entirely out of my comfort zone, but I'm willing to put myself in this position if it means that there's hope for a happier ending.

I took a Benadryl last night to sleep and it was the worst idea ever - I have to remember that those suckers put me on my ass for 10+ hours. I took it at 10 last night and slept through my alarm! In fact, I think it came on and I turned it off but have no recollection of doing so. I woke up 5 mins before I needed to be on the road :o

Sorry for the rambling - I have no idea why I am. I guess I just need to get this down.

Well, leg night tonight - I'm gonna try GotLife's workout. I should be able to finish it...if not, then I sold myself short :)

Back workout looks pretty solid, I'd think about incorporating pull-ups into there as well as they're great for development. Sorry to hear that you're going through a lot of emotional drama while you're trying to zone in for a contest. I'd suggest looking into an adaptogenic herb as they help with stress significantly.

My favorites are: Rhodiola, Ashwagandha, and Holy Basil Extract.

On the bright side at least this place gives you somewhere to vent and express your thoughts as opposed to repressing how you feel about things.

Keep your head up kiddo and make sure to make it through the leg day.

Tuesday June 22nd, 2010

I need some harsh punishment in the gym today.

Great post. Once you realize that only YOU can decide how you're going to feel and what your attitude is, life becomes a much better journey.

P.S. Sending you a PM re: cardio and prep.

I do go to Rutgers actually and I got better at pull-ups by doing pull-ups (and flexed arm hangs before I could do them fully) along with just strengthening my lats and arms.

I had my arm hangs at about 80 seconds last summer, but haven't been working on them since (I'm in love with cable and BB rows :D). I should get back on that wagon because I've always wanted to be able to bang out 20+ pullups.

There was a major storm in the area last night and half of south Jersey was without power. It took me almost 2 hours to get home since almost every street light was out and there were a ton of downed trees and detours

I didn't have any power when I got home and neither did my gym, unfortunately. It pissed me off because you don't need power to lift weights and the gym has huge windows so I could've seen what I was doing since the frikken storm ended at 7PM! But, that's the unreasonable side of me :)

My gym's power went out last year during a snow storm and used their generators to remain open. Something happened to the generator and it caused a horrible electrical fire in their lobby so I can understand why they'd close for the last 4 hours of business instead of taking the fire risk again. The fire had set off the sprinkler system and it destroyed all but a few pieces of cardio equipment. It was a major financial blow because they were closed for three weeks for repairs and gave all of their members a refund. Financial nightmare.

So I went out with some friends to an outdoor concert at our local park last night instead. It was good to get out because otherwise I would've sat at home and brooded over the events of the last few days - not very healthy. Girl talk is always good for the soul and I truly have some wonderful friends.

So tonight is the night that I try Gotlife's leg workout - I'm stoked because Friday nights during shore season are DEAD at my gym. I'll have all the equipment to myself!

I also am down another pound for a total of 5lbs in 3.5-ish weeks! Energy levels are still high. Only thing I wasn't prepared for was the chest shrinkage :o Sucks, but comes with the territory, I guess.

I agree, there is a lot of things we do for this type of lifestyle.. It can be a real mental challenge.. There have been quite a few times that I've thought to myself, "why the hell am I doing this"

But I took about a 6 month break from everything and I really did miss it. I wasn't the same person. I lacked the motivation to do anything.. Except for eat.. I was pretty good at that :D

Oh, that's one thing that I'm very good at - eating. Never had a problem with that!

The gym may take a chunk of my day and meal planning/prep takes just as much time, but it creates a schedule for me that I enjoy. Plus the endorphins are priceless and so are the changes that you see. It's like crack or something.

lol @ Philly, I speak "Brooklyn" in that case as I still have my accent from when I lived there.

Thoughts:
I tried Gotlife's leg workout on Friday but didn't do a writeup since I thought that I'd run through it with lighter weights to see what I was dealing with and what I could handle (hence the need to hit my hammies again yesterday). I wasn't sure what I'd be able to do since I'm not used to that kinda reppage. I'll hit it harder this week - it has the potential to be good stuff :D

Yesterday was great but the dips made my day :D. I'm kinda puzzled at why I'm able to dip almost 200# but my bench is stuck around 75#? I'm thinking I'll be around 90# next week, but perhaps I'm capable of more I just don't think I am? My left elbow had been bothering me for a while but it was behaving yesterday. It's also funny that I can dip more than I squat AND dead...

The weekend was good - I spent it organizing myself and refocusing. I took 3 bags worth of clothes to Goodwill, 4 boxes of books to the library, did a month's worth of laundry, worked on a test knit that's due in less than a month to the designer :o, read a few chapters from a book I've been meaning to read for years, hit the gym, washed my beautiful car, hung in my pool, watched some World Cup games and the Phillies, and got my hair did (well, all of em got did). I even painted my toes :)

Rant:
I was at a family BBQ yesterday afternoon and my uncle's wife asks me how my diet's going but I thought she was asking me about a project that I was working on instead and replied, "Oh, I've put that aside and am doing something else right now," and she goes, "Oh! AWESOME! I thought you were crazy for doing that - I mean who eats nothing but eggs, oats and broccoli?"

Then this other chick that I didn't even freaking know asks about it and my uncle's wife goes, "Oh she was like, doing this, like, bodybuilding thing and like eating like an anorexic..."

Lol, so true.

I always try to remember that many women LIKE the skinny-fat look. And hey, if that's how she wants to do it, good for her. At least she's not using her baby as an excuse to get fat and STAY fat.

Besides...I like my egg whites and oats, lol.

Oh no....she's just fat at this point and her methods aren't gonna do anything about it.

Her and I were discussing my diet last weekend when I wasn't eating muffins and drinking mimosas like everyone else and she asked me how much I weighed. I told her 160 and she goes, "OMG ME TOOO!!!" Riiiight. She's ~200 at least.

Can you tell that I don't like her very much?

Solid workout, as for the bench...have you ever worked your rotator cuff? It really helps dramatically with building your bench because a lot of people neglect it and it's a fundamental part of the motion. Also some people just don't have a good brain to chest muscle connection (myself included in there...my bench is silly compared to my other lifts) but you just need to keep plugging away at it and focus more and more on db's and bb's. Staying far and far away from cables (You'll come to notice I hate cables).

lol @ the woman at the bbq though. Reminds me of my coworkers when they see me eat a sammich or a salad because typically I just bring a 2 liter jug of brotein to work as it's easier to just sip throughout the day if I don't have time to prep my food (Mandatory OT = epic fail).

What kind of beautiful car btw?

I haven't received comments like that until I started my cut. Probably has mostly to do with people comparing what's on their plate vs what's on my plate and them feeling guilty about it.

Everyone tried to get me to cheat because it was a "special occasion" (ya, not really). As if food and beer is the only way that you can celebrate something

Thanks and no I haven't worked my rotator cuff....interesting post. I'm making very slow progress on my bench. Maybe it's my weak spot.

No, I know it is because in certain positions I can see the riblets on my upper chest :o need more mass there for sure. Sometimes I try to tell myself that they're just striations but.....yeah, I know the truth :o

I test drove an automatic and was so hooked on them that I bought my manual trans before I even knew how to drive it :o

I highly recommend them even though they're essentially a BMW (= $$ for maintenance) since they come with an incredible warranty. Plus, being manufactured by BMW = BMW performance which is win...

I had a 3-day split originally, but I split the leg day into quads and hammies at the recommendation of a few people and it's awesome because I love leg days. I use to compete in strongman. Blew out the knee, got out of shape (412lbs). 3/25/09 started cutting after my knee rehab. Got to 227 in ~ 1 yr. Then bulked to 265. Now cutting again, just cause I'm a beast, no comps or anything. Will have to do plastic surgery for excess skin from getting that big between strongman and knee injury out of shape predicament before I consider going on stage.

30 mins LISS cardio

All of the lifts were slow and strict as hell and I really felt it. Lifting my arms to wash my hair last night was a workout in itself.

I didn't get to do my deadlifts last night because some douchebag was doing CURLS in the only squat rack where I can load the bar for deads! I hate that. The rest of the weight area was completely free - he had his choice of benches and plenty of room to do his thing, too! And you know what? He was only curling the 45# bar - and it was obviously too heavy - I wanted to throw a pair of 15# DBs at him. I sat and waited for him to finish, but he then moved on to forearm curls, rows, etc. He was in the rack for an hour (yes I was watching the clock)! I didn't wanna be a douche and say something, but I did complain to management - they assured me that they would put a sign in there .

So I did what I could to exhaust my back. There's no substitute for heavy deads, but I did what I could. What my gym really needs is another rack. Siiiigh I have RDLs ahead of me tonight so maybe I'll try to do a few reps of regular deads if I'm not too sore.

If this is all I have to complain about then I guess I'm doing very well :o

I hit the beach on Saturday morning. I cannot wait. I am coming back up to hang with my girls on Tuesday night, though and since I'm doing well, I'm going to cheat - I've been having nasty cravings for chicken curry with naan and lucky me, there's an incredible Indian restaurant a few doors up from where we meet that does takeout. I've noticed that my metabolism is slowing so I think it'll do the trick - plus, my diet's been strong for the past few weeks save for those two refeeds a bit back. I mentioned to the girls on Tuesday that I think I'm going to cheat next Tuesday and they cheered :o :D

Randomness: There's this chick at my gym who's always there (when I am, at least) and I've seen her consistently for maybe 3 years. I've only noticed now just how much loose skin she actually has as I usually totally zone out at the gym and do my thing. If I had to guess I'd say she's lost at least 150lbs. I see her lifting weights now, doing pushups, etc. It looks like she's trying hard to build her base which is awesome to see. The girl works her ass off! Pretty inspiring. I was really impressed.

There's also this 40-something chick that's always doing compound lifts with her husband that's been bringing in her 16 year old daughter lately - teaching her proper benching form, sqatting form, etc. Awesome to see, too.

lol @ this. bb.com is the only forum I use and I stay clear of most of the subsections due to the plethora of broscience.

as for your workout, looked pretty solid even w/o deads, but yeah...if someone was curling in my rack I'd toss them out of there, that's certainly one of the benefits of being able to man handle a gorilla, it makes tossing kids that curl 45lbs in the rack very easy.

on a related note to that some kid who weighed 150lbs tops was doing assisted pull-ups w/ 175lbs of resistance today...he was told to move as it was time for my weighted pull-ups and I cannot be asked to have patience when such ***gotry is ensuing.

the funny thing about it is that pretty much the only time I ever speak in the gym is to get someone to move or if someone asks me for a spot.

This was a KNITTING forum that I use because I design knitwear. They have a "miscish" area and I couldn't help myself when I saw a thread about someone sticking to their diet.

All talk about Weight Watchers and how its AWESOME (?!) and all of their suggestions for "toning" and getting abs (mind you they're all still fat). ****ing 45#, brah! I was stunned...like WTF? I thought it was a joke or something.

This made me LOL IRL

175lbs of resistance? Srs?

I don't say anything either except to ask to work in with someone that I don't really mind (i.e. we've given each other that chin nod in the past).

Although some chick was mean muggin' the crap outta me last night  I was gonna ask her what her problem was, but it wasn't worth it.

lol @ knitting forum...brb signing up. clearly somewhere that I can meet the ladies...wait wut?

and I see people curling the 45lb bar all the time, my favorite is actually the 65lb 3 man bench (2 spotters, 1 in front, 1 in back).

and yeah I didn't get how someone that doesn't even weight 175, used that much resistance...you'd have to literally force yourself down as the resistance would just keep you up.

lol'd @ chin nod...I do that all the time with the guys that're in there 5 days a week with me.

Base model S has 205 HP ;)

The 2006 Ss and earlier are supercharged. They're insane. 07s and later are only turbocharged.

And 205 HP in a car that's half the size of yours ain't bad, brah. If you beat him he was a bad driver :) ;)

And no way Japanese engineering is better than German engineering. When I was in the market for the Mini I had no idea what I wanted save for anything that wasn't Japanese :D

Weights were okay - got up early, ate one meal and then headed down the street to the gym at 7AM after a shorter than usual digestion period - was trying to beat the crowds. Usually I have 5 meals in me before I hit the weights :D

I forgot how much walking/jogging in the sand works your calves :o

I'm thinking that after one more week of the dips with the 35# plate that I can bump the weight.

I also let myself have a hotdog for my 5th meal on the 4th, and worked some beef and veggies into my macros throughout the weekend because I love beef and thought that I deserved it :) Sue me.

Was only able to do ~40 mins mins of fasted LISS cardio instead of the normal quad day. I hit the beach down in the really soft sand by the water @ 6AMish and it was already 80 degrees! It hit around 100 later in the day, and there was a horrible bay breeze all day so the fukcing greenheads were out in full force.

I'll hit the quads tonight.

Weekend was great otherwise - got in a few naps, good food, good reading time, good swims and good beach time.

I'm heading back down on Friday right after work so I'll be updating the log for the rest of the week, but next week will probably be quiet. Those that work for the family business are trading weeks off so that there's always someone here to man the fort - the next few days are mine :o :(

Seems like even if you didn't get to much working out in, the mental recovery is going to help in terms of the long haul.

As far as the beef goes, you can always put beef into your diet just aim for a leaner cut of meat. The other thing you could do is break your diet up into less meals and get more calories into your meals so that they're more satisfying.

that's easy work...especially based on what your diet looks like, seriously your body will only thank you if you swap one of those brown rice w/ 3 oz chicken meals for 3 oz lean beef on a giant salad of baby spinach and hit it with a little aged balsamic for some flavor. So much win.

1x12 @ 12.5#
3x12 @ 15#

No cardio because well....it was a leg day and I'd like to keep my leg muscles thankyouverymuch. :)

Then I pigged out on the curry ^^^^ up there. I already feel a major effect on my metabolism and my veins are popping like whoa. Back on track until I'm desperate to kick-start the metabolism again - needed a push but decided against lowering calories or increasing cardio at this point in the game. I'm feeling as if this cheat was just what I needed.

I was able to get some pics of my lat spread. Again, it's just me and freaking Photobooth so this is all I could muster for now. This was actually pretty good practice for hitting poses on demand since it was a challenge to get the pose, turn around to hit the button, and then snap around and pose again!

I'd hit the poses well as I held up a mirror and then was horribly disappointed with how they looked once I had no mirror to correct myself with. Oh well - trust me when I say that there's much more definition there - I just gotta work on hitting those poses without looking. I'll get there - I'm working on it!

No, I don't cheat. I'll tell you why - I refuse to get up on stage with one single regret about my prep. I don't want to be racked with "What If"s - "What if I hadn't cheated, what if I hadn't skipped that cardio, what if I hadn't half assed that training session." I want to get up there knowing that above all else I did everything I had to do to bring my best. That way whether I win or lose on the scorecard, I've won no matter what in my eyes. Feel me?

I want to get up there knowing that above all else I did everything I had to do to bring my best. That way whether I win or lose on the scorecard, I've won no matter what in my eyes. Feel me?

Now you and me both have 17 weeks, lets do this shiiiiiiit.

My top abs made an appearance this AM before I had my oats, though. Then they were gone :(

I mean swapping out 2 of those meals, 1 with the fish and greens and the second chicken and brown rice meal for beef with a giant leafy salad.

Build stronger/thicker abs and you'll see them whenever. Even after a prolonged bulk I have oblique/top ab visibility and I was bulking at an obscene intake level.

True - I'm hitting those suckers hard in the offseason. They need size for sure. But, my obliques were insane in high school - I was huge all around, though. I'm getting old :(

And I'm working out a new meal plan now since work is beyond dead today. I think the only phone call today was from the plant manager's wife asking what he wanted for lunch  Although I did find out that my step-grandfather just died the other day. Funeral's tomorrow.

I'll post it in a few.

Solid workout, but if you're going to talk about taking something slow...static shrugs (60 second holds) will put some size in your traps...unless you have twerp genetics and can't grow traps.

As for protein depending on what price range you're looking in and if you want a blend or isolate, lmk. I've gone through tubs of virtually everything worth going through.

Hrm. I'll do that. I've learned over the course of the last 2 years that I have pretty good genetics.

This offseason I need to build everything.

I'm thinking about trying XF's whey - the arctic lemonade that JHicks talks about as if it's diamonds or something. I just can't take ON anymore - the flavors make me absolutely dread drinking a shake. :o

I've heard good things about the XF whey, Allmax whey is pretty good, Isolyze Vanilla PB was the best isolate I ever had, lately I've been drinking MGN Cake Batter (it's pretty good) and breaks up the flavor monotony. Their cinammon bun flavor is pretty legit too. Vasolate is one of the best tasting blends I've ever had, I like to put 1 tsp of xantham gum in it and turn it into ice cream.

So I was going through pictures on Facebook and found this old one of me - it's from the summer of 2007. I was pretty much jacked in high school between swimming and rowing but had a healthy (heh) layer of fat over it. Once I stopped NCAA rowing I didn't see the point in keeping my muscle so I went vegan to lose weight. Problem is, I became skinny fat:
http://i873.photobucket.com/albums/ab291/k8stop/n31508568_32131874_4596.jpg

I didn't start lifting until over a year after that ^^^ picture. I can't believe that I look like this now:
http://i873.photobucket.com/albums/ab291/k8stop/Photo7.jpg
http://i873.photobucket.com/albums/ab291/k8stop/Photo3.jpg

I'll admit that these past two years of heavy lifting have been inconsistent, half-assed, and mostly just me playing around and seeing what I could do.

Now that I've been able to see what I can accomplish with a half-assed effort in less than two years, I am beyond stoked for my offseason. Sure, I am committed to my competition 110%, but it's this sort of thing that's helping me to keep an eye on my long-term goals and prevent short-sightedness.

I want to make nationals and get that pro card.
