Just wondering arguments for and against this video. he makes points of NOT eating protein, having too much muscle, having no bodyfat and UNABLE to get fat even if he tried, and still being deficient on protein.
He claims that we don't need protein, we just need to eat amino acids and enzymes that are in raw foods. Apparantly everything has amino acids in it, as long as its raw and thats all you need to be fit and gain muscle.
Bottom line he says "you don't need protein"
I have a bunch of thoughts on this, but I'd like to hear what you guys think!

I think the guy is full of crap - first of all if he is using himself as an example of how you don't need to eat meat to be strong and healthy then he's a piss poor example. He looks scrawny and underweight. I realize he's not a lifter.. but still.. the guy's appearance does not help his case. The guy looks like he needs a juicy steak.
So he consumes different veggie foods each with incomplete amino acid profiles that together make up all the essential ones. Big deal.. people have been doing this for thousands of years. Beans and Rice are a good example. Why do that when meat and eggs have all the essentials you need right off the bat. Cooking has been around for about 250,000 years - long enough for us to adapt somewhat to its effects on food. As long as meat isn't burned/scorched it's fine. Avoid the charring though it creates advanced glycation end products that cause aging and all sorts of nasty mutagenic problems.
If you want to read an in depth review of how much protein we need and how we evolved to eat it (our teeth, digestive tracts etc) via lots of meat, check out this debate:

I don't have much respect for the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle from a health standpoint. The only argument that hold any water in my opinion is the ethical dilemma around supporting an often cruel and disgusting mass produced factory system of animal farming. It would be much more preferable from an ethics (not financial) standpoint if we could all go back to small farms for our source of food with grass fed and open range products free of unneeded hormones and anti-biotics.
Is it possible to get by being a vegan? sure.. It's also possible to lift once a month and "get by". But both are far from ideal.

Amino acids and proteins are the same thing
Amino acids are what proteins are made of.
There are no free amino acids in nature, only proteins (the building blocks of life that every living being, plaints included, have) When we eat animals or plants we take the proteins they build for their own body or structure, break them into amino acids to form proteins that are suitable to us.

"If you follow all reputable intellects, you'll notice I do not follow what they say. And look at me, I'm amazing."
I read a study on Yahoo! about an old Indian man claiming he hasn't eaten in several decades. I think I'll start that pretty soon...
OP, you said you have thoughts on this... Those thoughts are more than likely right.

He claims that we don't need protein, we just need to eat amino acids !
Um...thats kind of flawed logic. That's like saying we don't need molecules, we just need atoms.

Great read, and pretty much destroyed the high protein myth (ie: that it's bad... or rather... that our understanding of how MUCH is bad is wrong). When I got to Campbell's part alarms started immediately going off as he talked about how nutrition was a holistic "philosophy" and that you can't treat biology like like other sciences (ie: like using testable variables... numbers bad! Anecdotal evidence good!). I googled his name before I got to any part where he started pimping himself and his colleagues and what did I find? "The China Study"! Easily one of the most long-winded and worthless rallies against the consumption of animal protein. It's no surprise it's the only piece of literature he cited. No facts. No numbers. Nothing but his "opinion".
It was like reading an Evolution vs Creationism debate... one side had actual data, the other side tried to discredit said data but provided none of their own.

We don't need atoms, we just need protons, neutrons and electrons.

Protein we eat is not the protein in our bodies. This guy thinks we believe that if we eat steak the little steak fibers glue to our muscle fibers to make our muslces bigger... GAH
Wonder if he ever heard the term "branch chain amino acid"? That's the long way of saying PROTEIN. RNA takes the amino acids from your broken down food and attaches them end to end making a long chain called protein. This is what biologists call "protein synthesis" When it comes to making new proteins for muscles, your body doesn't care if the amino acids came from raw food or grilled chicken, or a tub of whey.
One man buys houses. Another man buys supplies and has construction workers build him houses. In the end you still have a friggin house.

this isnt true. Branch chain amino acids are not proteins, they are individual amino acids that just have a special shape. and protein synthesis does not just occur in lines. a lot of proteins for in globules and other weird shapes. except for collagen, very few proteins are linear.

His argument may have some validity to it but I would really like to see a lot more evidence on how he arrived at the conclusions. Until I see more proof, he is simply pushing beliefs and has nothing to really back it up. We learn new things about nutrition almost daily in this day and age, but I sincerely doubt that research will find that the body doesn't need protein to grow.

The best thing about the internet is anybody can go out, get a webcam and a youtube account, and immediately become an "expert" in his or her "field".
Oh wait, did I say best? I meant worst.

supplementation of pure protein is probably only necessary in the most elite athletes. It wouldn't have those negative effects though.

When i first started lifting with my brother's mate, i was only eating really lean foods so raw vegetables' came into what i ate a lot of as well as turkey and lots of it through out the day. (keep note i wasn't so educated on on foods or anything and thought i was doing the right thing) Didn't gain a pound during this whole thing i did.
So raw **** may have amino acids', but deficit in protein won't make u grow. ever since taking protein (whey) in the recommended dosage for muscle growth I've gain 6kg in the past 7 months so.
