So we all know how tough a pre-contest diet is, but what do you do when someone who just wants to lose a few lbs asks for your diet? I have a hard time telling people 1)because I paid for my diet and have been requested not to 2)it's not just to lose a few lbs, it's intense work and sacrifice that I wouldn't wish on the average person.

I know that as we lean out we are all asked to share, so what's your response?

it never fails, so I have just been sending them wavelengths sticky in the "fat loss" section

He pretty much lays it all out on what is required to go from a fat slob to pretty much as ripped as you want...with the exception of the last 6 or so weeks of contest prep i would say

here's the thread:

I tell them 250 protein, 250 carbs, 50 fat....and watch them instantly lose interest.

What if that doesn't work? I have found myself discussing the workings of the liver, proper calorie counting, protein vs carb intake, and still they act all interested. An hour later they are eating a pizza and laughing about how bad they are.

I have a friend who is desperate to lose weight, but she wants to follow one of my diets. She also wants to lose muscle in her legs, that she feels are bulky. I'm an ectomorph, my diet is intended to keep on as much muscle as humanly possible, and my metabolism is through the roof. I need to send her something, but what?

same damn problem. it seems the closer i get to a show the more people think i have the magic secret to losing fat... The way I weed them out is I email them the lifestylecut book from www.scivationbooks.com then when ever they ask me a question i tell them to read the book. Then if someone actually takes the time to read it, it shows me they are infact interested in dieting and I will help them.

It's unfortunate, but most people just want an easy fix and they think that there is some big secret food that sneaks into their diet that is making them overweight. Fat makes you fat. Carbs make you fat. Fructose is the devil. Processed foods are killing America. Well, no. Those things aren't what's making you fat...it's those things in excessive portions that's making you fat.

If your friend is willing to measure and log her food while hitting a caloric goal EVERY SINGLE DAY, then thats really all there is to it. Your diet is a calorie total and macro ratio that works for you. Let her know that those numbers WILL NOT necessarily work for her.

Set your friend up w/ some macros that will put her several hundred calories below her estimated maintenance. Tell her to weigh herself every week and aim to lose 1-3lbs each week. Make diet adjustments when weight loss stalls. If she is willing to put forth the effort and precisely track her intake over an extended period of time then she WILL be successful...if not, well, you did what you could right? nobody said it was easy.

And as far as losing muscle in her legs...I don't think that's necessary or even possible. Unless she has worked her way up to having extremely muscular legs through years of hard work in the gym, then she is simply genetically predispositioned to have large/muscular legs...sorry...their are thousands of people that would be ecstatic to have such a problem!

If she just wants to lose a little to a moderate amount of fat tell her to take away the really bad foods like fast food, sweets and sugary drinks, then eat smaller meals and add veggies. OR tell her to eat high protein and keep the carbs and fat low :D ; along with working out and cardio she should lose weight. Explain to her that its not muscle making her legs look big its all the fat, woman and men have lots of fat in that region and its usually stays there unless you diet for a lonnnnnnnggggggggg time. If anything you want more muscle mass because once you cut some fat off youll look more tone

She is has put on all this size in her legs for the last few years thinking she was going to compete, but now she has a shot a Playboy and Maxim and wants to dwindle them down. And I agree with you, I am one of those people that would kill for bigger legs.

I really couldn't tell them anyway. At most I just explain its carb cycling and what that entails...but every week my numbers are changing for carb intake, depends on how I'm looking each monday and where my trainer wants me to get to that week. Then they look confused so I try to just explain simply about eating smart, taper carbs off thru the day and replace them with green veggies and make sure they eat enough protein. They still get confused. lol

I had a co-worker lady come up to me a few weeks ago and say "wow, you look nice and lean, can you tell me how you got so lean because Ive tried everything and nothing works for me." Something deeeep inside me wanted to say, "So you have tried EVERYTHING and NOTHING works for you. What, you went to the gym and walked on the treadmill for fifteen minutes for a couple of days coupled with probably a **** excuse for a diet and you didn't lose 50 lbs in one week. What, the (LOL) Atkins/keto approach you took for two weeks that allowed you to eat a bacon double cheeseburger without the bun for lunch and a 20oz porterhouse for dinner didn't melt all your fat away. No, I'm not going to help you because you have tried NOTHING and I'm not wasting my time because you are not going to listen to me." But being the nice guy I am, instead of me telling her my semi OCD diet approach/macro breakedown, refeeds, etc... I gave her a very reasonable approach/diet plan to losing weight. You know what she said to me, she said "Ew, that sounds too hard." Like she was expecting me to tell her about the magic pizza and cheeseburger diet plan that I was on. Needless to say, lately I just tell people that I just eat below my maintenence calories.

Wouldn't that be awesome? I agree though, tapering for the lay-person is a good way to get them "initiated" to our way of eating. It encourages timing and thinking about what they put in, they can learn how to get more advanced later.

Its frustrating because you can't make people diet like a bodybuilder. They have to want it and they have to enjoy it. It's a completely different story to just lose a couple pounds of fat then to lose ALL your fat while retaining muscle. The average person may seem interested in your diet because they see the results that your getting, but the truth is that isn't what they are looking for. They aren't competing and don't need to diet like a competitor. They just want to get into shape. Granted the laws of thermodynamics still apply but it's like comparing apples to oranges. They don't need to have quite the same attention to detail and perfectionism that bodybuilders have. A lose form of tracking calories or even some basic guidelines to follow is all they need to lose the first couple of pounds.

But many times I have been burned by friends who seem interested. You take your time to help them and they don't follow it. People don't lack strength they lack will.

ah, i feel you. i get so dang frustrated when people ask me "whats the best diet pill out there?".. im like EXCUSE ME. and they want to know what i take!!! im like, you seriously think i take a diet pill, and thats all i do?!?!? NOOOO way. no diet pill is going to get you any results without training and proper nutrition. ive NEVER taken them, never really believed in them, tried hydroxycut for a while, but no results.. atleast none that i wasnt just getting from dieting and training alone. I just tell them look, there is no quick fix. i get tired of seeing people hitting up the gym come april, to look good for MAY. they dont work out YEAR ROUND, and think hitting up the gym and doing cardio around april, is going to give them the body they want for summer. IM LIKE HECK NO. i work out YEAR ROUND, i diet and eat right YEAR ROUND. there is no QUICK FIX for it. ive been eating right for 6 years now, ever since i was 15 yrs old!, and ive been training since then as WELL. it TAKES TIME, and dedication.. and CONSISTENCY is the KEY. when i start into all this, they pretty much ignore it, and hit up their gym session doing an hour of cardio, then hitting the nearest mcdonalds. or HECK, doing an hour or two of cardio a day and STARVING themselves.. to look good for summer, then after the summer is over, they are back to not working out, and eating unhealthy, or not eating at all. i dont know what to do about these people, i give me two cents and thats all i can do!

I actually spend quite a bit of time helping people with their diets. I currently have 20-30 people that I've helped or am helping. I start by having them track their meals for about a week or so to show me what they're doing. If they actually follow through with this and still seem interested I give them this (a print out): (Yes I realize that its not perfect but provides an outline for those who have no idea where to start).

FOODS:
Proteins:
Chicken breast
Lean cuts of red meat
Lean cuts of pork
Turkey Breast
Fish (tilapia, cod, tuna, salmon*, halibut, shrimp, clams, crab, lobster)
Eggs*/eggwhites
Low fat Dairy (cottage cheese, cheese, greek yogurt, milk, quark)
Soy/Edemame/Tofu

*These are also a great source of healthy fat

Complex Carbs:
Whole grain bread/tortillas/cereal (make sure cereal has less than 5 grams of sugar per serving)
Kamute (Safeway carries this in the cereal aisle)
Millet
Barley
Bulgur
Quinoa
Whole grain couscous
Whole grain pasta
Wheat berries
Brown/wild rice
Legumes (peas, lentils, black beans, kidney beans, pinto beans)
Potatoes/Sweet potatoes
Corn (this is a grain, not a veggie)
Air popped popcorn (hold the butter and salt)
Fruits
Veggies

Healthy Fats:
Fatty Fish (also a good source of protein)
Farm fresh/free range eggs (these are healthier than commercial brands)
Avocados
Nuts
Natural nut butter (Adams Brand is great!)
Canola Oil (this is best for cooking/baking)
Olive Oil (this is best for salad dressings as it isn’t as healthy when heated)
Flax seeds (these must be ground to make them easier to digest)

General “Rules”

-Every meal should include a protein. Remember that foods like oats, legumes, nuts, quinoa all have protein so you don’t necessarily need to get all of your protein from meats and dairy.

- Read labels and measure foods to make sure you know how much youre actually eating.
Record the food youre eating in a food journal tracking calories, carbs, proteins, and fats. Write down EVERYTHING that you put in your mouth.

-Eat all the veggies you want! Spinach, broccoli, celery, lettuce, cauliflower, asparagus, green beans, mushrooms can all be eaten freely. In addition fruits such as tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, peppers (yes these are all fruits) can be eaten freely.

-A protein shake RIGHT after weight workouts is a good idea as it provides a source of fast digesting protein to your muscles. This aids in recovery and muscle growth. One scoop of protein with about 8-12 oz water is great. After that try to eat your post workout meal within an hour or so of workout.

-A serving of protein (chicken breast, fish, lean beef) is usually about 4 ounces. A serving of whole grains (oats, brown rice, quinoa) is usually about 1/2 cup measured uncooked. Each food should have a nutrition label showing serving sizes. READ LABELS. For foods that don't have labels the internet is a great resource.

Sample meal plan:

Meal 1 (assuming pre workout)
Protein
Carb (this can be either fruit or whole grain)

Post Weight Training Workout
1 scoop protein powder w/ water

Meal 2 (assuming post workout)
Whole grain carb
Protein

Meal 3
Whole grain carb or legumes (optional)
Protein
Healthy Fat
Veggies

Meal 4
Protein
Healthy fat
Veggies

Meal 5
Protein
Healthy fat
Veggies
Whole grain carb or legumes (optional)

Meal 6
Protein
Healthy fat
Veggies (optional)

Usually after I give them the above outline I never hear from them again. For the ones that are still interested after receiving the outline I usually help them calculate the number of calories they need to meet their goals (usually fat loss) and go over macro percentages (usually start with something simple like 40p/40/c/20f and adjust from there based on progress). Next I have them journal their meals and track their progress and keep in touch with me regarding questions and the progress they are making. Its alot of work but I'm pretty passionate about health and nutrition and it allows me to help people. Usually I'm willing to put in as much work as they are. If they keep in touch with me and regularly show me their food journal and report their progress then I'm more than willing to help. When they stop showing interest I stop helping.

-A funny little side note... This morning I was approached by a personal trainer at the gym where work and was asked if I could meet with him to discuss his diet. Last week I was approached by the main fitness instructor at the gym to go over her diet and about a month ago another trainer asked me to help her with her diet. Aren't these people doing their freaking research?

I'd take it as a compliment! People ask me my diet all the time, and even though I find it annoying at times, it's also a nice way of them saying, "Hey, you look awesome, I want to look like you, can you tell me your 'secrets'?"

lol but seriously, I explain to people who really want to know about carb choices like whole wheat options, and oatmeal, and sweet/red skin potato rather than capt'n crunch and white bread toast with jelly. whether it gets thru the lard and into their brain is up to them.

Since about 2% of people will actually listen and be serious I always give them something to do before I will help them. The few that have actually listened to me have done wonders so sometimes it pays off.

First I tell them to sign up on Fitday.com and setup an account and just track what they eat for two weeks. I tell them I don't care what it is, just track it.

If they do this then I will sit with them, go over the numbers and help them make adjustments. This way I know they have already done some work and are willing to do what it takes.

If someone approaches me half heartedly I just ask them if they would be willing to weigh their food each day....usually good for a laugh.

Great idea^^. It's funny that people are so scared to track what they eat and actually take 5 extra minutes to weigh out food or atleast estimate how much they're eating. I've helped a lot of people who seemed to be oblivious to the fact that 99% of packaged food actually has a nutrition label on it and all they have to do is read it to figure out how much they've consumed.

After about 2 weeks of "attempting" to follow it they of course reverted back to old habits... so when recently asked by a few different people, i decided to tell them to simply not eat fried foods for 3 weeks and do 20-30 mins of some sort of physical activity be it walking or jogging for the same three weeks... they havent asked anything since then... had they done what i asked, i would have been more than happy to help them out... but im tired of wasting time with people who really dont plan on doing anything with the info i give them

I know it, I'm so tired of wasting my breath. This girl asked me for a plan one day and so I thought I would be nice and I asked her what she ate currently. She said things like mac n' cheese, hamburger helper, a gallon of chocolate milk a day...you get the idea. I told her that she should start eating veggies, and she said, "ewww I don't like veggies, rabbits eat veggies." So I stayed patient, and suggested oats, "ewww horses eat oats." Still I remained patient and said well how about splitting up your meals into smaller meals and I must have referred to it as grazing because she said, "graze? like what a cow does?" That did it! I got up and said "look, you can call me whatever animal you want: rabbit, horse, cow. But don't you doubt honey that there is only one animal that stands out when I think of you and they eat garbage, oink!" Don't F with me when I am dieting :) The End

What the hell jump into it. I did it for my prep last summer all summer. I would eat a preworkout meal, workout, have a shake 30 mins post workout, walk 2 miles to work....worked 3-11, sipped on xtend between 5 pm-6 or 6:30 pm, diet soda or 2, sip on 4 more scoops xtend around 8:30-9:30, go home eat abig meal around 11:30 and then go to sleep. It got me down to 164lbs from 205 in 24 weeks and i still had a few bacardi and diets on the weekends up til 14 out

I'd say the first week will be difficult. Headaches etc. Make sure you have diet soda, gum here and there as needed and a good stim every day between your two big meals. After that you'll find you won't think about it til it's time to eat. I feel IF is better for cutting rather than bulking because, at least for me--it's difficult to get ALL the cals I need for growth in just 2 meals

I'm curious about how I would respond hunger wise to this approach. I've read about it and heard others talk about it, but I've never tried it. I might try it one day this week.

I actually did this for my last contest prep and found that it really worked for me. Before I always did the 5-6 meals per day thing and this past 5 weeks kind of just fell into the habit of 3 bigger meals while training for my last show. Worked for me. This last show I was leaner than I've ever been and the diet was much easier than in the past. It could also be that this was my fourth show and the diet just naturally gets easier the longer you do it too.... Give it a shot and see what you think. I do think you'll have to give it longer than just a day though to really see if it works for you.

I fell this could work great for me, because i dont have a problem with hunger during the day,but i need to eat like big time at night...i am cutting...need to cut like 40 lbs in 24 weeks...can u give me an example on how that meal at night was,and around how many cals does it have?

thanks a lot

I think what annoys me more then sharing a diet is when they ask..how to "spot reduce" and then informing then you can't

I used to put way too much effort into helping people with a meal plan only to have them stick to it for about 5mins. I wrote up a "Tips and Tricks" document which I give to anyone who asks. If they are truly interested or motivated they will come back with questions or for more info....helps weed out the people who are not serious.

LOL, the old "I just want to get rid of this (points to the hangy fat tricep area)".

Lol, I love the "I just want to lose my belly." usually they have a beer in hand when they ask me too.

I just finished my season this past weekend and I was complaining to a friend that I had bloated from my post contest binge, and she said she had bloated too. How do people who have never cut their sodium or water think that they are bloating? Aren't they technically walking around bloated all the time? I put on 14 lbs of water, now THAT'S a bloat!
