Does anything about the USS Nicholas guided missile frigate say "attack me with AK's and RPG's"?

If only all our enemies were this stupid.

I'm guessing these pirates didn't score highly on the intelligence portion of their military aptitude tests......

Poor planning, for sure. They could have gotten a higher ransom for an aircraft carrier.

I wondered the same thing when I read the story earlier.....did they seriously think they would win a battle against a Navy warship? lol.....

The civilized, humanitarian thing to do would be to buy them a subscription to Jane's Defence Weekly.

Apparently those tricky French are not clearly marking there vessels to identify them as war ships.

A transcript of the pirate's conversation leading up to the attack:

Pirate 1: "So . . . the bigger the ship, the bigger the ransom we get, right?

Pirate 2: "Yes!"

Pirate 3: "Yes, that's right!"

Pirate 4: "The bigger the better!"

Pirate 1: "OK . . . I just spotted a great target. We'll all be rich! You guys duck down and hide. I'll pull us close, and when I give the word--you guys jump up and fire! They'll be so surprised and terrified that they'll surrender immediately."

Other Pirates: "Great plan!"

a few minutes later . . .

Pirate 1: "Ready . . . . . NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[Pirates jump up with weapons raised]

Pirate 2: "Holy sh*t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111"

Pirate 3: "OMG . . . we're all going to die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Pirate 4: "THIS was your great plan!!!??"

The French must have just taken the movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales" out of the dvd player. Josey always put his back to the sun, they pulled the same tactic. i love it.

5 minutes from my office is the lifeboat from the Maersk Alabama. You can see the bullet holes from the snipers.

Here's the only problem I have with the article:

The Navy took five pirates, suspected to be from Somalia, into custody,

Pirates... custody?? KILL THE FUXKIN' UNCIVILIZED BAST*RDS!

But you have to give the pirates credit, at least they're truly "alpha males".......... ;) :D :p

Nah they are not alpha anything. They are all friggin dopped up on Khat and higher than a kite, plus the little ****ers are hardly 120 lbs wet..
As to going after a Navy warship, remember these knuckleheads do not have sophisticated gear so they cannot distinguish a warship from a merchant vessel on a radar. Plus with their height of eye, and haziness/sea state they cannot always make out the vessel until they get close.
And before anyone asks, I worked these same waters in 2005 before this anti-piracy thing made headlines, i have no respect for these little ****s.

Here's what they "attacked"-

http://www.nicholas.navy.mil/default.aspx

A third-generation guided missile frigate of the Oliver Hazard Perry class, she was laid down as Bath Iron Works hull number 388 on 27 September 1982 and launched 23 April 1983. Sponsor at her commissioning there on 10 March 1984 was the same Mrs. Edward B. Tryon who sponsored DD 449 in 1942.

Nicholas was designed to provide in-depth protection for military and merchant shipping, amphibious task forces, and underway replenishment groups. Her 453-foot (loa) hull displaces 4,100 tons and her gas turbine power develops 41,000 shp (31,000 kW) for a single screw, giving a top speed of 29 plus knots.
