Today was the first day of classes for my last semester. Worked out at my school's gym. I like working out there because it frustrates and motivates me. I am there doing 160-170 on squats and the guy next to me had on about 350. Makes me feel like a little weakling but pushes me to want to progress. Probably will never be able to do 350 (haha) but certainly have LOADS of room for improvement and strength gains. No classes today but lots of work to do nonetheless. Slept in and later this afternoon will be working chest, tris, bis.

Haha thanks man!

It's funny, for the first time in my life I had a guy come up to me in the gym and ask me for lifting advice. We BSed for a few then we got into diet, and he goes "Yeah man, so what do you eat?" and I replied "Meat, cheese, and Ben and Jerry's" and he kind of gave me a Bert-stare for a second. It was so sweet haha.

Anyway, not to hijack your thread, nice update today.
Definitely want the peanut butter bread, and the stirfry looks awesome too.

Motivation from others is critical, IMO.
I always look around and see the bigger, stronger guys (both in the gym and on this site) and it gives me the extra kick in the butt to get it done. Definitely helps too, because as of now I don't have a workout partner.

Good luck on the lifts today.

Change bolded statement to "anybody, anywhere" and that is where I stack up at 5'2"
Can't do anything about height, so strength is the only way to go :)

thank you, things are definitely better than before that's for sure.
I'm still in NY, just moved from a nice house in a small town, to an apartment in the city.. so it's a lot to get used to. plus I'm about an hour - 2 hours away from everyone.

I can somewhat relate
I grew up in a real hick town
Lived back in the woods on 12 acres. Driveway was 1,000 feet long. No neighbors in sight. Could go and lay or walk a outside. Very peaceful.
Very quiet and private.
Now I have an apartment near school. Nice place but still always some commotion or noise.

Grew up (parents still live) in southeastern MA. Now im about 15mins from Providence in a town in RI. Will be here for another year, then see where my PhD pursuits will take me. But most of the schools I like are in the Northeast.

College app process just isn't fair, man. I had some pretty high hopes coming into Penn, but now I look around and there are plenty of ill-mannered and messed up people. Seems a lot like any random school. And to think some friends of mine didn't get into Penn... About Wharton, my college counselor told me during my college app process that Wharton has become somewhat commercialized and tend to heavily favor kids who have parents or relatives in corporate/business related fields. If that's indeed the case, then you have absolute no reason to feel bad since you grew up in a rural area and most likely didn't have any business-related background.

It would be insane if you came to Penn for grad school though! You gotta keep me updated on your grad school search, all right? Good luck man.

Did you try applying as a transfer student? I applied to Penn for undergrad and got rejected coming out of high school as well, but I got in as a transfer student after my sophomore year at my state school.

As far as standardized tests go, I wouldn't say you should only apply to Wharton if you get a perfect GRE math score. Lots of colleges are looking at applicants more holistically, so good extracurricular activities, jobs, and any unique life experiences are more than enough to make up for not getting perfect scores. Give it a shot - worse case, you get rejected, but you never know...

Come on, don't let those 30 points bum you out of applying. 770 is already a top notch score and like the other guy said, applicants are reviewed holistically. They're not going to shred your application if they see that you don't have an 800 on the GRE.

Test scores aren't the end-all, be-all. For what it's worth, I got an MCAT score in the 99.9 percentile and had a 3.93 GPA, but I didn't get into Penn Med or any of the other top tier med schools because my application didn't have enough of the other stuff, like crazy research and unique work experience. A 770 is still a great score, and as long as you are a well-rounded applicant with some other selling points, you have a shot. If Wharton is your dream school, apply and see what happens. Worse case, you get rejected, but best case, you get into your dream school. Twenty years from now, you don't want to look back and think "what if." That's just my $.02, but it's totally your call.

Nah, I'm not at Penn anymore, I just graduated in May. I'm in NYC right now for med school. How did you like orientation? And where are you living? Definitely take advantage of Pottruck - it's such a nice facility and has pretty much everything you could possibly ask for in a gym.

Damn, it would've been nice to meet someone from here in real life. Good luck in med school though - your future's legitly solid now that you made it into med school.

Orientation was pretty nice and there were some interesting events but overall, I thought it was a bit hectic. There wasn't much time to work out and with all the random food everywhere, my diet kind of got side tracked too lol. The dessert reception after convocation was orgasmic though! Do you remember that? I can't even imagine how many calories I took in during that reception but man, it was worth it. There were upperclassmen there putting dessert into tupperware lol.

I'm in Harnwell for the kitchen in the quad apartment. It's beginning to seem like a bad call though since there's pretty much no socializing going on here. Everyone has their bathroom inside their housing and nobody needs to come into the hallways or lounge area lol. And here I was wondering why almost all the freshmen are in the Quad with the communal bathrooms and missing out on the apartment style living in the highrises.

Pottruck is really nice! Is there a T-bar row section anywhere? I'm still not completely familiar with the place.

Any words of advice for a clueless freshmen that doesn't really enjoy going out and meeting random people? I've spent most of my time either in the gym, in my room, or out wandering the shops.

I never really went out and dont drink but would suggest
1. Make friends at the gym who may have similar goals/lifestyle. Go to the dining halls after or watch a game
2. Intramurals (always a few different ones going on per season)
3. Clubs (ex. I write for the sports section of the newspaper)
4. Study (yes it is needed)
5. Se what events are going on around campus. Sometimes they may bring in comedians, speakers etc.
6. Video Games (lol)

I don't go out or drink either. To be honest, I'm still feeling pretty nostalgic about the old life and the tight friends from my 2 years of residential high school. The friendships and experiences there really aren't the same as in a public high school. Something about living together for 2 years (the school was for junior and senior year only) with the 60 people in my graduating class made us much closer.

With all this still on my mind, I'm not sure if I'm ready or willing to go out and meet people because they'll never be able to replace the friendships from high school. Bad mindset, I know...

With all this still on my mind, I'm not sure if I'm ready or willing to go out and meet people because they'll never be able to replace the friendships from high school. Bad mindset, I know...

What do you think they are doing?
Have fun being lonely for 4 years...and then you will graduate and what? You are going to get back together with those old friends? They will have their own lives.
Stay in touch but don't live in the past. You will regret it. Don't waste your college life. Make friends. You bonded deeply in 2 years in HS. Imagine how much you can do in 4 years with even more mature people/relationships.
Meet some girls too :)

Dude, just go out and MEET EVERYONE. If you're ever faced with the choice of staying in or going and doing something that you're sort of "meh" about, choose the latter option. Put simply, do more stuff.

Do you count the cals in stuff like baby carrots/broccoli/lettuce and such? Not big amounts, but if you eat a cup of broccoli, do you count it?

Really interested in your journey, mainly because you and I had similar experiences I think, and my lifts are only slightly higher than yours.

YOU TRYING TO SAY I AM A WEAKLING!!! jk

yes I count veggies but I eat 1lb a day. Generally comes to 120-150. Also good to count them because they factor into other things like fiber intake.
Also, things like carrots can add up quicker because they ar starchier. Just a cup is 50+ calories, the same as an oreo. Would just pick up 1 oreo and not count it? Probably not. I guess it depends on how accurate you want to be with measurement or if you prefer a laid back approach. Count them of not, just eat them.

Yo Saintly the key to college is finding yourself. Don't force anything because the whole point is to do what YOU want to do.

You will meet people even if you spend 90% of your time between the gym, your dorm, and classes. You really don't have to put any effort into socializing in college unless you are a sociopath. It just happens.

As everyone has already said, go out and meet new people. I guess it's a little tougher since you're living in the high rises as opposed to living in the Quad or Hill, where it's easier to meet more people and hang out, but don't let that deter you. Are your roommates freshmen as well? Have you become friends with them yet? If you're taking a language class or a writing seminar, take advantage of the small class size and get to know your classmates. For the giant classes in lecture halls, don't be afraid to sit down next to someone you don't know and try getting to know them. Check out some of the clubs, there should have been a club fair sometime during orientation or else sometime soon. If you played a sport in college, maybe try out for the club team or play in the intramural league.

Penn is a very frat-oriented college, but I was never into frats, so I mostly hung out with my friends in our dorms, at restaurants, etc. Every now and then I would go to a frat, but it definitely wasn't my favorite thing to do. If you're not into drinking or whatever, don't think you have to do so just to fit in. Basically, just stay true to yourself, as there are plenty of other things to do besides drinking.

And lol at you reminding me about the dessert reception. That was probably the most epic spread of desserts that I have ever seen. I ate more cannolis and eclairs than I can remember; definitely not something I wanted to know the calorie count for hahaha. And I remember the upperclassmen packing their tupperwares with desserts - I guess some things never change.

Ah, the T-bar might be one of the only things that Pottruck doesn't have (at least not when I was there). The first floor has a bunch of cardio equipment. The second floor has the big fitness center on the left of the stairs and basketball courts to the right. Also, there's another smaller fitness studio with a mix of cardio equipment, weight machines, and free space for stretching that's adjoined to the basketball courts. I never went up to the third or fourth floors, but I think it's some personal training rooms or fitness classrooms.

If you have any more questions about Penn, feel free to PM me. I don't wanna hijack D's thread any more than it already has been.

I like them I guess. Hadn't done them in awhile was more the reason. Use a barbell.

Yes you must try it. GLop in on and reheat to melt it on.
Pancakes are easy- 1 part egg, 1 part liquid (milk/water), 2 parts dry (flour, mix or whey if you want protein pancakes) THese were just regular pancakes with some added cinnamon.

Maybe I should be more liberal with sodium even at 2500mg?
I have been trying to avoid it because I noticed it was 2500mg
But like I said I also have a high potassium intake, so should that negate/balance out the high sodium?

Yesterday I had it just after squats, whereas a couple of months ago I had one at the end of my workout (I do full body). Is that due to not enough Mg and Ca, as well, or is there another issue underlying it?

The exact cause isnt known, but experts think its related to poor flexibility of muscles, muscle fatigue of doing new activities. Other factors such as dehydration, depletion of electrolytes (potassium, sodium, calcium or magnesium), injuries, and inflammation and nerve damage can cause cramps. Cramps are more common during exercise in the heat because sweat contain fluid as well as electrolytes. If these nutrients fall below a certain level, the incidents of muscle spasms increase.

Pinched nerves are also caused when the electrical impulse from the brain cant reach the muscle, this can cause foot cramps, numbness and other symptoms....

TIPS:
------
-Invest in a more firm, but well-cushioned workout shoe.
-Dont smoke (decreased circulation of oxyen causes cramps)
-Take a potassium and an effective multi daily, i also recommend glucosamine chondotrin, i find it very effective at relieving doms and painful joints...
-If it persists, maybe consider wrapping it before your next squat routine or whenever else it arises.

Hope this answers more than one persons questions!

Most of the time it is Amica Farms fresh natural chicken breasts.
But I get frozen occasionally from Sam's club
Just let them thaw out so that they ssentially become like fresh/raw chicken and then weigh them.

I was curious because the safeway ones look extremely similar in size to yours. It's just weird though, whenever I weigh them I'm getting one tenderloin to only be about 1.5oz at the most (frozen). Most of the time they are only around 1oz frozen which really doesn't seem right to me.

Lol
No the breasts I posted are probably 8oz or so a piece.
Never buy tenderloins. Sometimes I separate the tenderloin from the breast when cutting/trimming though.
1oz seems is about right for a tenderloin though (they are pretty small)

Glad to hear about the weight-gain. Goes to show you're still on the right track :)

Smokey parpika with tuna sounds sooooo good. I freakin' love paprika, but never tried it with tuna (always use chili powder with it instead.) Shall be giving that a go!

Also use apple cider vinegar as sort of like a marinade with the seasonings
And technically its "smoked" paprika

Hey since we're virtually the same height and I just started bulking.. what's your average daily cals?

Right now it varies greatly due to variations in how much activity (lifting, sports, biking, running) I do or not do. My best advice would be to not base what yu do on anyone else. Figure out what you have been doing to maintain, then increase calories 10% each week until you are gaining.

Quick question for you...how do you count your evoo use into your macros when you are cooking with it for sauteing veggies, chicken, etc.? Because its not the same as say a pizza, where you end up eating all of it as it has been spread on the dough...just curious, been thinking about it lately and looking for second thoughts

i generally measure it out and pour it directly on after cooking, so none is lost in cooking prep

ugh
dont get me started on the cowboys :(
Was so happy I realized I can access the redzone so I didnt have to watch all of that display of pathetic-ness

Anyways, today I worked out back and bis. No PR's or anything of note to report. Hopefully will try to go up in weight tomorrow with some of my legs/shoulder lifts. Been busy getting applications together for grad school, my classes and senior project.

Disclaimer: In no way do I support the use of advocate the consumption of protein bars in place of food. However, this was done as a challenge to myself to consume a food that is out of my normal/safe zone. Didn't even think it tasted particularly great and don't intend on eating many more in the future but I did it for more of a mental exercise.

No. Depends on the day. I cook up to 5lbs at once and eat however much I need for that day given all the other food I eat.
GRE is the exam you take to get into grad school (like SATs for college)

Workout- September 21
Hit up the legs and shoulders for today. Started out with 5 sets squats and 5 sets of upright rows, alternating between the two. Then did the same with shoulder press and leg extensions and then finished up with some sissy lat raises.
PRs on my last set of squats, which I was happy about. Hadn't hit up the legs in probably 4-5days I think, so they felt fresh and I was gunning for it.

Penn state is right on that cusp

Would recommend the fudge brownie over vanilla (but remember I dont do shakes)
Sweet to my liking (very flavorful), thickness btwn a whey and a casein, good consistency
I like it cuz its not the typical chocolate (actually tastes brownie-ish-->protein brownies)
Also works well with CC for ice cream and mixes well enough in water to use for my cereal.

Why are you applying to so many schools? I felt bad enough asking my recommenders to write letters/forms for 3 schools. I'd say 5 is plenty enough. When it comes to grad school you should be much more picky about finding a program that suits your specific needs (educational and career-wise). Also definitely VISIT the programs you're considering. Interacting w/ faculty and students (and even alumni/career services) should be a big part of your decision process.

For the record, I applied to 3 schools - 2 top 15 and one "safety". I was waitlisted at 1 accepted at the other 2. Am extremely happy w/ my decision now.

Hey D, posted a couple days ago about what type of chicken you cook lulz. So I finished my tenderloins and went out and got some frozen breast. My question is, how do you weigh your breast? Every website seems to have different numbers. Lets say I microwaved it for a little just to quickly dethaw it, would that be the best time to weigh it? If so, what numbers do you use. For instance, just ate dinner, 6 oz of chicken breast raw, what would that come out to? Thanks bra.

When using frozen chicken I let it completely thaw, leaving it out for a couple hours. Then I dump the water down the drain. Fresh chicken now in hand (w/o water weight), I then trim any little pieces of fat or skin and place it on the scale.
Since now there is really no fat at all on it, I use the leanest figures I have seen on trimmed chicken in stores [110calories, 25g protein, 10calories from fat-->1.1111g(to be technical and make macros be 100% accurate to calories)].

no it is 100% right
1.1111111g of fat= 10 calories
25g protein = 100 calories
total calories will = exactly 110

I use 1.111g fat instead of 1 because 1g= 9 calories

=109 total calories yet the package lists 110

Okay, thanks a lot. It's weird, I usually use fitday to track all of my stuff, but they seem to be pretty off on the chicken category. What's even worse is that their description of how you are weighing your chicken is awful. They have it saying "cooked raw, (yield after cooking)", which really makes no sense to me at all haha.

Yes I have posted various recipes 100times
Basically just replace some of your dry ingredients (ww flour, baking mix etc) with whey to fit your macros for the day/meal.
Most decent batters for baking stuff can be made with 2 parts dry ingredients (whey, flour, mix, cocoa powder, etc) 1 part egg/whites and then adding water and flavorings (cinnamon, extracts if needed or wanted) to desired consistency and taste.

Just experiment. Its fun and a great way to mix things up and add variety to your diet. I rarly end up using the same ratios day in and day out. Lots of times it comes down to I need X Y Z to hit my daily need and I just dump a bunch of stuff in to get there for my last meal.

culd u post dat ice cream recipe?
For 1 serving
1c Cottage Cheese (whipped if you can buy it, or blended if you have time)
1/2c milk (optional, can also add more CC)
½ scoop Casein (adds thickness but you can use whey)

Add-in suggestions: (don't blend but stir in before freezing)
Peanut butter, Blended berries, mashed banana, cocoa powder, whipped cream, extracts, SF syrups
Freeze for a good 1.5-2hours or so before eating (hardness will depend on quantity and add-ins)
Other notes:
Whey doesn't work well because it isn't thick enough. You may have to experiment and use more or less liquid (milk) and more casein to get the right thickness. Add some splenda for sweetness as well. If watching calories, you don’t need any add-ins or you can use the SF syrups. Cocoa powder will also add to thickness. Days where you need more fat/carbs, PB, berries, and mashed banana all work well and taste delicious. Whipped cream can just add to the creaminess factor and should be folded in right before eating if used.

Workouts:
I have decided to give legs their own day (had been doing them with shoulders) to give my upper body an extra day of rest. Seems to be working so far (2 days in lol). Hit the legs yesterday and shoulders today. Hit PRs in the overhead press, shrugs and upright rows. Shoulders feeling it as at type this :).

Eats:
I have found myself falling back into the obsessing over calories, macros, and exactness down to the tenths of grams. So I am trying to go back to counting as little as possible. I will measure out and calculate my meats, eggs, CC, and protein powders to make sure I get in 1g/lb in complete protein sources. The rest can come as it comes, as I easily meet minimums. Energy is energy and I don't want to live with the constant mental stress.

How do you prepare your beans? I'm wondering if I can cook a bunch at one time then store for easy reheating in the microwave. How long would they last in the fridge?

As long as it is in a sealed container I would say it should last at least 3-4 days.
I generally do two big cooks a week for stuff like this and meat.

D - don't kid yourself here.

With your current eating 'pattern'/'rituals'/'system' (or what ever you want to call it) you don't need to worry about 'weighing your protein to ensure you are getting enough'. Your 'default food' is protein. So you know you will be getting far in excess of what you technically need REGARDLESS of what you do or do not count (let's be honest here - to hit your requirements by about meal TWO. You don't need to get massive amounts in.... all you would need to do is have a scoop of whey a piece of steak and some cottage cheese).

You basically eat the same things most days for your protein - so just keep eating your protein as you do... but what is more important is that you actually maintain ENERGY intake (not more protein ;) ). So I would be more inclined to at least fall back into a 'serve' type counting system of other macros to ensure a base 'calorie/ energy intake'.

If you guesstimate your average protein intake and subtract that from your calorie needs then just make it easy on yourself and divide remaining cals into halves:
total cals = b amount
average protein cals = w grams x 4
remaining cals (x) = b - above figure
Fat requirements = ( x / 2) / 9
Carb requirements = (x / 2)/ 4

So if someone was eating 2500 cals.
And on average they got in, say, 180g protein
total cals - (180 x 4) = 1780
fat = 98g [make it 100g to be easy ;) ]
carb = 222g [make it 220g to be easy]

So you could do 6 serves of each:
fat serves = 16-18g
carb serves = 35-40g

Then just make lists of what you can eat to fill that - eg: 16g fat could be 2 tbs peanut butter, 1 oz walnuts, 1 full tbs olive oil, 3 whole eggs, 4-5 oz portion of salmon (I know... you hate seafood... )

Your serves would be different - but you can use the same system. For typical 'exchange lists' just google diabetic exchanges. eg: The following are 5g fat exchanges - so x them by what you need.
Almonds 6
Avocado 2 tablespoons (1 ounce)
Brazil nuts 2
Cashews 6
Filberts (hazelnuts) 5
Macadamia nuts 3
Nut butters, trans-free: almond butter, cashew butter, peanut butter (smooth or crunchy) 1 1/2 teaspoon
Oil: canola, olive, peanut 1 teaspoon
Olives, black 8 large
Olives, green with pimento 10 large
Peanuts 10
Pecans 4 halves
Pistachios 16
Margarine, low-fat spread, 30 to 50 percent vegetable oil, trans-free 1 tablespoon
Margarine, trans-free: stick, tub, squeeze 1 teaspoon
Mayonnaise, reduced-fat 1 tablespoon
Mayonnaise, regular 1 teaspoon
Mayonnaise-style salad dressing, reduced-fat 1 tablespoon
Mayonnaise-style salad dressing, regular 2 teaspoons
Oil: corn, cottonseed, flaxseed, grape seed, safflower, soybean, sunflower 1 teaspoon
Pine nuts 1 tablespoon
Salad dressing, reduced-fat 2 tablespoons
Salad dressing, regular 1 tablespoon
Seeds: flaxseed, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower 1 tablespoon
Tahini (sesame paste) 2 teaspoons
Walnuts 4 halves
Bacon, cooked, regular or turkey 1 slice
Butter, reduced-fat 1 tablespoon
Butter, stick 1 teaspoon
Butter, whipped 2 teaspoons
Coconut, shredded 2 tablespoons
Cream: half-and-half, whipped 2 tablespoons
Cream, heavy 1 tablespoon
Cream, light 1 1/2 tablespoons
Cream cheese, reduced-fat 1 1/2 tablespoons
Cream cheese, regular 1 tablespoon
Oil: coconut, palm, palm kernel 1 teaspoon
Shortening or lard 1 teaspoon
Sour cream, reduced-fat 3 tablespoons
Sour cream, regular 2 tablespoons

For carbs - The typical carb exchange is 15g, so find a good list, and x by what you need:
Bagel, large (4 ounces) 1/4 (1 ounce)
Bread: pumpernickel, rye, unfrosted raisin, white, whole-grain 1 slice (1 ounce)
Bread, reduced-calorie 2 slices (1 1/2 ounces)
Chapati, small (6 inches across) 1
English muffin 1/2
Hamburger bun 1/2 (1 ounce)
Hot dog bun 1/2 (1 ounce)
Pancake (4 inches across, 1/4-inch thick) 1
Pita (6 inches across) 1/2
Tortilla, flour or corn (6 inches across) 1
Barley, cooked 1/3 cup
Bulgur wheat, cooked 1/2 cup
Cereal: bran, oats, spoon-size shredded wheat, frosted cereals 1/2 cup
Cereal, puffed, unfrosted 1 1/2 cups
Cereal, unsweetened, ready-to-eat 3/4 cup
Couscous 1/3 cup
Granola, low-fat or regular 1/4 cup
Grits, cooked 1/2 cup
Pasta, cooked 1/3 cup
Quinoa, cooked 1/3 cup
Rice, cooked: white, brown 1/3 cup
Tabbouleh, prepared 1/2 cup
Wheat germ, dry 3 tablespoons
Wild rice, cooked 1/2 cup
Corn 1/2 cup
Corn on the cob, large 1/2 cob (5 ounces)
Mixed vegetables with corn, peas or pasta 1 cup
Parsnips 1/2 cup
Plantain, ripe 1/3 cup
Potato, large, baked with skin 1/4 (3 ounces)
Potato, mashed 1/2 cup
Pumpkin, canned 1 cup
Spaghetti or pasta sauce 1/2 cup
Squash: acorn, butternut 1 cup
Succotash 1/2 cup
Yam or sweet potato, plain 1/2 cup (4 ounces)
Animal crackers 8
Graham crackers (2 1/2-inch squares) 3
Matzo 3/4 ounce
Melba toast (2 inches by 4 inches) 4 pieces
Oyster crackers 20
Popcorn, low-fat microwave or popped with no added fat 3 cups
Pretzels 3/4 ounce
Rice cakes (4 inches across) 2
Saltine crackers 6
Snack chips, fat-free or baked: tortilla, potato 15 to 20 (3/4 ounce)

There are also fruit and dairy exchanges (But I know you tend to stay away from them).

It IS holding you back - but remember that you are still not 'free' of the issues that are holding you where you are either.

So to make sure you can tackle both = Wean yourself off counting only a 'less strict' routine (which is why I opted for portion control). It is a way you can substitute/ free yourself from calorie tracking, but that you still maintain your intake with in a suitable range.

4-5 oz portion of salmon (I know... you hate seafood... )

Does any1 have any experience with canned salmon?
I can eat canned tuna because the texture is different than normal fish and I can disguise the smell (the two reasons why I cant stand seafood).
Is canned salmon minced up like tuna and chicken or is it in large pieces (or some other form).
I would like to add some fatty fish to my diet but I cant stomach it in regular form.

It depends on which brand. I have had the 15 oz cans to make salmon cakes before and its like they just chunk it up and squeeze it in there, but if you get something like starkist in the 4-5 oz cans it's like tuna, but alot better IMO

Ohhh - this looks do-able:

Salmon and Tuna Loaf with Tarragon Tarter Sauce
8oz (240gr) canned salmon, drained
8oz (240gr) canned tuna, drained
2 eggs
2 tbs dry bread crumbs [I would replace with oat bran]
2 tbs white wine [<< could leave out or replace with vinegar or lemon]
1 tbs Dijon-style mustard
1 tbs dried onion flakes
1 tbs fresh chives
1 tsp fresh tarragon

Put eggs in a medium bowl and lightly whisk. Add mustard, crumbs, onions herbs and wine, whisk well. Add fish, breaking up with a fork and stir well to combine. Do not 'mash' together, though....
Line a 4 X 8 (10 X 20cm) loaf pan with parchment or wax paper. Butter the paper. Spoon fish mixture into pan and bake, 350F (175C) for 45 minutes.
Remove and let rest 10 minutes. Remove from pan, peel off paper, slice and serve. Or let cool and refrigerate to serve cold.

Tarragon Tarter Sauce
1/2 cup plain or Greek yogurt
1 tbs fresh tarragon
1 tbs fresh chives
2 tsp Dijon-style mustard
1/3 tsp garlic powder
Put all ingredeints in a small bowl and stir well. Set aside for 15 minutes to blend flavors.

Simple and pretty damn healthy too! ;)

Does any1 have any experience with canned salmon?Canned salmon (pink) is awesome! It's still not as tasty as, say, grilled atlantic salmon fillets, but for the convenience/price/ease of preparation it's hard to beat. It's most certainly a welcome substition or addition to canned tuna, and since I tend to err on the safe side as far as the latter is concerned and I don't want to actually cook every meal, I eat it probably 5x per week. Hence, my stack of 100 cans in the cupboard :D

What's the difference between pink, keta, red and wild?

Recipe sounds good (anything with garlic/onion)
The recipe calls for 'drained weight' - which means once it is out of the can and the fluid has drained off a little. So 240g (8.5 oz) drained. So if your can has 7 x 2.2 oz serves = 435g ish then a little over half would be fine.

Pink v's keta (chum) v's red (sockeye) = different species of Pacific Salmon (there are a few other species - 5 in total... silver is another... ummm... I know there is one more.... :o ). Most of the time when you eat these they are wild caught salmon (they are not really farmed a lot as they don't really adapt to farming well).

There is then also Atlantic Salmon (which is a slightly different fish) - of which 95% will be 'farmed salmon' (unless it states otherwise - WILD Atlantic Salmon is actually endangered).

Difference in terms of the actual fish is that pink is the lightest in colour, has a softer meat, and the lowest healthy fat content. Keta (also known as 'medium red') is a little firmer/darker in flesh and has a medium fat content. Sockeye/Red is deep red in colour, higher in fat, firmer in texture, and is much better quality (but also more $$$$). [note - be careful of what you sometimes find in stores - their 'red' salmon can be 'pink' salmon dyed red]!

If you are looking for top quality salmon with a firmer texture and more flavour - go for the red EVERY time. If you want something you can disguise as something else - then pink is better. :p But it does have lower fat content and is sometimes considered the 'dog food' of salmon. :o

yes
cheesy proats
Cook oatmeal 3/4 the way though. Dump in CC, cocoa powder and, depending on if you need more given the amount of oats/macro need, whey and peanut butter. How much I use normally comes down to calorie and macro need for the day. Id say start out trying 1-2c-2/3c oats for every 1/2c CC then add a pentiful amount of cocoa powder or whey to get it really chocolaty.

Sept 27

Decided to go back to MGN. Was running low on whey and they had always been my favorite. I have been especially looking for a peanut butter flavored whey and hadn't been able to find one that was real peanut butter-like. I also got some chocolate peanut butter and chocolate caramel from MGN, which I will be trying out over the next week or so. As you know I don't do shakes, but use whey all the time for my baking, cereal, ice cream, oats, etc. I think MGN tends to be tops in this type of use.
I tried making my peanut butter cookies with it (MGN PB whey, natty PB and ww flour), and then tried making a simple syrup with it and dusting my kashi with it. Needless to say, they both came out fantastic.

Went real well. Actually didnt workout fasted today because I had make my cookies and couldnt wait to try one before heading over :).
PR'd with shrugs and was able to maintain my heaviest weight at multiple sets with overhead presses.

I know I am a little behind in updating. Will post yesterday and today either tonight or tomorrow.

1 2 3 4 MGN PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES

1 cup peanut butter (I used my Teddie's)
2 scoops PB whey
1/3 c flour
1 large egg

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes at 350°F.

Highly recommended that you are ready to eat something when you put them in because you won't want to wait when they are done.

Totally felt like crap on this day. Hadn't really slept well and was really stressed out for a variety of reasons. I was hoping that the gym would help me burn off some steam but I just don't think I was focused or had the energy to really hit it hard enough. Ended up just being a "going through the motions" workout. 26th is a planned rest day.

Sucks to hear that man- a bad night's sleep is never followed by a good workout... Stress eased off a little?

Workout
Back and Bis
Didn't set any PRs so to speak but I did get back up to my highest weight for deadlifts and upright rows and carried that weight for 4 sets each. Then I did a few barbell curls and concentration curls. Finished up with some pullup and chinup superests. Legs were feeling beat so I took it easy on the cardio and took the day off on the 30th.

Some of the Eats over the past few:

Its what my mom used to make me when I was little because I couldn't eat jelly (hypoglycemia). She got the idea from celery with PB (celery would obviously not work in a sandwich).

Im trying that Ice Cream recipe you posted a few pages back tonight. Its in the freezer now. I didnt add any mix ins but I will after. Should I have frozen the mix ins prior to freezing? I did 1c Whipped CC, 4oz Skim Milk, and 1/2 scoop Cake Batter Muscle Milk. It didnt seem that thick but maybe freezing will thicken it up. You should do a separate thread for recipes man because you have some great stuff and it would stop people from constantly bothering you for the same thing over and over again.

I said that whey doesnt work as well. MMilk is mostly whey so it probably isnt very thick.
Next time cut out liquid or use more CC and protein powder if you are using whey

I dont have any Casein. I do have Elite 12 Hour or Myofusion. Maybe those would have worked better? I think I should have gone with Elite 12 Hour because that stuff is surprising thick.

the same texture?
Whipped is whipped and smooth

Workout: Chest, tris
Decided that rather than stick with the same exact exercises for my workouts, that I would keep the same split but do different exercises to keep things fresh. I'm loving the log and progress man. Very inspirational for a lot of people on these boards!

I would suggest keeping it simple.

Wide grip pulldown (or chinup) --- alternate with reverse close grip pulldowns Each week --
3 working sets
Barbell Rows (swap with Tbar rows every week and/or DB rows)
2-3 working sets
Seated Cable row
2-3 working sets
Racked deadlifts
3 working sets to fry it off

Bi's
Seated EZ preacher Curl
3 working sets
Incline DB curls
3 working sets
Cross body hammer curls
3 working sets

And then have fun growing!

Thanks for all the workout suggestions everyone. I am making a list

October 2nd
Workout: Shoulders
I am really glad I am giving shoulders/traps/delts their own day. I think it is now my favorite workout. Rows, shrugs, overhead presses. Hit some PRs on the overhead (although I lost some form) and shrugs. Will try to hit the same weight and maintain form next time out

October 3rd
Workout: Back/bis
The reason I asked for the workout ideas. Getting sick of my lats and bis seem repititive with curls. Didnt maintain enough intensity today. Will try out some of the new ideas next time out to motivate me.

Omelets I will use a variety of spices-->Mrs dash table blend sometimes, others I use: garlic, onion, cayenne, creole, paprika, chili powder, basil, italian seasoning. Keeps it fresh.

Muscle Gauge is my favorite by FAR
I dont drink shakes, so I use it solely for proatmeal, baking, cottage cheese ice cream, pancakes etc. Works incredibly well for all of those. Makes a nice thick batter, adds so much flavor without having to add extra sweetner, great macros, and yes, cheaper than almost anything out there (especially considering the quality). So many different flavors to chose from (as of now Id rank cake batter and chocolate PB as their best).

Turnips were frozen. I basically just microwaved them and then smashed them all up. Dumped in a load of garlic and Promise with some italian seasoning. So I am not sure how much flavor of the turnip I actually got (lol). Sorta like potato in that it tastes how you flavor it IMO.

Though I've posted in this thread, I think I'm more of a lurker. Hwver, I've Been following since you started it, and I just wanted to say I've noticed the last few weeks I think you've made some real strides in terms of introducing more real/normal/appetizing looking foods into your diet. Just wanted to say congrats and offer my continued encouragement. I hope you are noticing the improvements in the kitchen as well.

I agree. Your foods have been getting better and better every week it seems.

Keep it up!

Workout: Legs
Killed it. Set PR in Leg press. feelsgoodman.jpg. As a result I didnt try to PR with my deadlifts or squats and will plan on upping weight in those next session.

Unfortunately I lost my internet for a few days, which is why I haven't been making posts as frequently in other sections or doing my daily rankings thread. BUt I just got it all fixed and should be good to go (fingers crossed).

The eats:

MGN chocolate caramel cheesy proats (yes soupy, yum)

MGN chocolate PB + extra PB cheesy proats (I am getting a little concerned that I ay like the chocolate PB better than the cake batter. Blasphemous I know. Never thought I would like a protein better than MGN cake batter but the chocolate pb flavors is certainly up there).

Also was curious out of all you oat lovers, what brand and type (steel cut, rolled, instant) you use/prefer?

Rolled, doesn't matter which brand.

Rolled oats, and whichever brand is cheapest. I'm sure I'd enjoy the taste and texture of steel cut, but rolled oats are generally half the price of them here.

Quaker instant oats. 1 cup of oats + 1.8 cups of water in microwave for 3 minutes.
