just tried making the cc ice cream. i used the following ingredients:

1 cup cottage cheese (a little less)
0.5 cups of skim milk
1 scoop of UNFLAVORED (oh my god) milk protein isolate
1 cup of strawberries
2 tsp of raw motherf*cking refined processed god damned white cane sugar (2 tsp of sugar is only 30 calories? i thought it was way more)

i blended all of the ingredients together and am freezing now. didn't realize i was supposed to only blend the cottage cheese. will report on its awesomeness when it's done freezing.

I always buy my protein powder unflavored. after blending it all together it tasted pretty bland. so I threw in a little bit of chocolate banana flavoring (I buy the flavoring and the powder separately).

any ideas d4k on ways to flavor it naturally that don't involve adding like hundreds of calories worth of stuff with fruit and peanut butter and such? as far as i can tell, unsweetened cocoa powder tastes bitter and awful.

not that i'm a stickler for the "natural" stuff, but i don't really like the taste of fake chocolate banana flavor all that much.
hmmmmm
not sure how unflavored protein is going to make it
the flavoring of the protein is kinda key
Are you open to stevia? It is natural. I would add that to cocoa powder, if you are trying to avoid excess calories from add-ins. If stevia is ok, you can also get flavored protein that is stevia sweetened (MGN is what I use).

Im with D on this one. You're gonna want that sweetness from the protein powder. Vanilla goes really well with all kinds of fruit. Might be ok with a cup of strawberries and some sugar, but IMO use flavored stuff.

I also like adding a little vanilla extract.

yeah, i have stevia. but fwiw the sugar doesn't add that much calories - 2 tsp of sugar is like 30 calories. big deal. a bigger source of calories would be me adding a banana and 1 tbsp of peanut butter - that's like 200 cals right there.

i did throw in the chocolate banana flavoring in at the end, but it'd be cool to find some way to naturally flavor it. not "Naturally" as in use stevia instead of sugar, i mean just more ways to add flavoring without a lot of calories. apparently sugar isn't as high in cals as i thought

Just curious as to why the person who wrote this
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?p=439205611
and openly advocated eating dirty foods is avoiding a natural sweetner that has been used by the Japanese and Indian tribes for years and why why think it is worse than sugar?
I see myself as a very clean eater (very) but don't see the benefit of empty calories that I can replace with more nutrients from foods.
And why not something with more benefits, like honey?

because stevia tastes like ass, and sugar only has 30 calories in it, so why would i pick a 0 calorie version that tastes like ass over a negligibly small 30 calorie version that tastes good

the problem is that it doesn't have FLAVOR, not that it isn't sweet enough

ok, it's mostly frozen, but... tastes like ass. i guess 2tsp sugar AND chocolate banana flavor is no good. i'll need to figure something out in the future.

i added some lemon juice to make it tangier, and now i'm trying to choke it down because i dunno what % of it i've eaten so far and i don't want to go over my caloric limit for the day.

my god, the pain.

but i bet if i screw with cocoa powder + some sugar + cinnamon next time i will = profit

i just came up against a piece of chopped up strawberry that I guess didn't get blended in all the way. mother of god.

to all of you people playing at home: don't blend the strawberries. slap chop them and throw them in. you'll win big money.

lemon juice is making this delightful as well.

yeah I really dont know how to deal with unflavored whey
what do you normally do with it?

yeah I really dont know how to deal with unflavored whey
what do you normally do with it?

it's unflavored milk protein isolate actually, 70/30 casein/whey. it's awesome in pancakes, i've been screwing around with the recipe for ages now. mix flour, oil, casein, some sugar, an egg, milk, wheat germ, and some salt together. works like a charm.

the key is the casein + wheat germ part. the casein almost has the texture of flour and the wheat germ makes it taste like wheat (and hence like pancakes). i was doing this a while ago with oats instead of flour and it was pretty good, but now that i realize it's unnecessary i'm going back to flour to see if i can get the ultimate pancake.

My current recipe (which needs tweaking and is not perfect) is

Egg, whole
1.0 x 1 large (33g)
Kretschmer Original Toasted Wheat Germ, 2 Tbsp
1.0 x Custom Food (13g)
Milk, nonfat, fluid, without added vitamin A (fat free or skim)
0.75 x 1 cup (245g)
Oil, vegetable, canola [low erucic acid rapeseed oil]
0.5 x 1 tbsp (14g)
Salt, table
0.25 x 1 tsp (6g)
Sugars, granulated [sucrose]
2.0 x 1 tsp (4g)
*********** Milk Protein Isolate, 1 scoop
2.0 x Custom Food (30g)
Wheat flour, white, all-purpose, enriched, bleached
0.25 x 1 cup (125g)

as you can see i was messing around with wheat bran too. the thing is that for this recipe to really taste good, 1 tsp of salt will do the trick, but then you're at 100% of the rdi of sodium already.

the breakdown above yields 4 bigass pancakes

705 cals, 18g fat, 49g carbohizzle, 70g of the good stuff

if you want to make it lower in cals for whatever reason you can use egg whites instead of eggs and replace some wheat flour with wheat bran and remove the oil and all of that to get it like 200-300 cals lower, but i have yet to tweak the recipe to make it perfect yet. so if you want to adjust it then do so.

God I hope you are asking for what I used specifically and not the "base" ingredients which D has posted multiple, multiple times. Lol.

I used:
- 1/2 cup 1% cottage cheese
- 1/4 cup chocolate milk
- Approximately 3/4 scoop of chocolate PB Muscle Milk Light
- Some cocoa powder
- 1 TBSP of chocolate Better N' Peanut Butter (trying to get rid of it)

Yeah ur specific recipe :) I have tried 'D''s and it is gd just wanted to know of your variation really, Thanks

Will give it a try :)

I felt so free yesterday not knowing my exact calorie balance, that I decided the next step was to not obsess over macros. As I have said before, I know I easily hit my minimums. So why do I obsess so much over hitting exact 0.1grams of macro X, Y and Z? Although I always enjoy the food I eat, it is always planned and fits a purpose. SO for the next few days at least I am not counting macros. I didn't even count calories yesterday. What I did was weigh out and write down everything I was eating, then this morning when I got up I added it all up. I ended up being slightly below my normal 2350, but was pretty pleased with how close I came to hitting my numbers by feel (and knowing about how much I eat every day). I want to make sure I am not coming up short, so now I will track calories but not macros (well technically they will be tracked I just can't see them). I feel freed.

Workout: Chest, tri's, lats

4 x incline
2 x tri ext
4 x weighted dips (tried to go up weight on last set but couldn't hit it w/o losing form)
4 x back lats
4 x front lats (PR last set)
3 x bench

I also killed my workout. I was disappointed last session that I couldn't complete my last bench press set. Today I knocked it out and went up in weight with the lats for the last set. Tried to go up in weight with the dips but would have had to lose form to complete it.
Tomorrow will be shoulders, bis and back (looking forward to some deads).

To reduce freeze time you should whip the cottage cheese first in a food processor and stir in the rest, thats what worked for me the second time.

Hey yo, d! You never answered my question :(

sorry
I rarely go out to eat o my own, but will go out with family.
Most meals are on my own, as I live alone.
Eat meals with family when I visit them or they visit me, like Sunday for Mother's Day.
If I am visiting my parents, my mom will usually do the cooking, unless it's summer and they are doing something on the grill, in which case my dad take charge.
When I did live at home, on occasion I would cook dinner for the family.

Bahaahaha you really are as bad as me. I'm just picking up the last of my orders today (if they're all in). Then REALLY no more buying lol.

How come you don't chow down on all those samples? I work mine into my daily intake. I try the pre-workouts/creatines on sundays, which is typically my "do nothing" day, becuase I don't like to interrupt whats working for me. I wanted something new from the custom whey (not posting name of supplier cause it would just get **** out), so I had ordered 15 lbs of MGN (always buy in bulk to save $). Then like a week later they had a sale of buy 2-2lb isolate and get 1 free. Plus I had a discount code and another 10% froma previous order. So I ended up being able to get 24lbs (6lbs of 4 flavors) for $125.00. 5 dollars per lb of an isolate with such good macros--> 69g of protein per dollar--> I couldn't pass up the offer, knowing it was a limited time thing. So I made the order and just said I would be set for awhile. Running out of storage space - lol.

I tend to stock up on things when they go on sale. Do the same thing with just about all food items I buy. When it goes on sale I buy in bulk (and freeze if its perishable).

I always wait to buy until I have like a handful of servings left then sometimes run into trouble.

I'll try a 30lb stash to begin with then maybe increase from there. Its like a bulk..you kinda just increase the calories slowly..hahahaha.

What do you do when you are stuck between weight/going for a PR?
-With a few lifts I am finding it too easy for 10reps but have to lose form to go up in weight. If it is a barbell I have to go up 10lbs or dumbbell 5 (either way 5lbs per arm). It is frustrating because I do not want to lose form and deceive myself into thinking I am going up in weight, yet doing my current weight is not forcing me to push myself and I can end up doing 15+ reps if I want.
-Wondering what you guys do when going for a PR. Should I take slightly more rest time before attempting, or try less rest time so my heart rate is elevated?
Thoughts/Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Youre on it D! Deads are REAL work. Diet is solid as well.

Excellent quote. It hits home nicely.

That ice cream (first pic) - could you please post or PM me the recipe? Know the calorie/macro breakdown? BTW - I tried your sludge this past weekend and forgot to mention it in my journal. It was awesome.

Question of the day (great idea BTW) - Ahhh its that fine line between excellent form and throwing up some more weight. My take is that form is of utmost importance in executing any exercise. Sometimes though (i.e. to get past plateaus, for PRs, etc.) a little "body english" is completely acceptable -IMO. Sometimes the form may suffer just a bit but a little bit of a cheat is fine. Spotters help as well. Dont think form though should go completely out the window for the sake of increasing weight and hence resulting in injury. Just want to be clear on that.

Before attempting a PR, I do take a bit more rest (30 sec-1min) and basically become completely focused on the task at hand. The actual number of pounds that I attempt for a PR becomes "zero" in my mind. I think of the weight as essentially nothing. As you know, half the game is mental. Weight is going up regardless.

Keep training hard.

Ginger peanut sauce sounds like a great idea! I've never had it, but ginger and PB are two of my favorite things :) No advice really, but if you continue pushing hard as you have been (both in the gym and mentally through food choices), I think that maybe if you give yourself a bit more time, you'll hit that increased weight without having to compromise form. Maybe a slight change in routine would be helpful? I'll let others chime in on this one; they'll give you far better advice I'm sure ;)

It's funny how mental heavy lifting is. I used a belt for deads for the first time today, repped out 285x12 easily. Next set, I ****ed around with my straps too long, looked around the gym too much, got out of the zone, didn't breathe right and I managed 5 before I felt like I was going to die.

You seriously have to eliminate ALL sources of distraction. It's YOU and the WEIGHTS, and you aren't about to be beaten by an inanimate object.

I went caffeine free for about 2 weeks before I said "f this" and got back on the pre-workouts lol. Any of the mainstream ones should do you well, or even coffee if you're not interested in the other ingredients.

I've used xpand, superpump and white flood with good results, and as for preworkouts with dimethylamylamine, jack3d, cryoshock and 1mr are all pretty awesome too.

42?

If you are going for PR's D, do the weights before the biking! You need to set yourself up with some aero bars! Can probably find some for pretty cheap.

Watch your intake if you get heavy into biking though, it's INCREDIBLE how many calories it can burn. I know a guy who bikes to work and counts calories, he's in his 40's, he's 170 pounds, around 5'8, and he has trouble keeping his weight up at over 4500 calories a day.

Another West Coaster. No higher than 42. Getting the feeling no one is going to be close unless you are from the area.

As for the calories, I know (mentally). I ran XC competitively up until a few years ago--> up to 10miles a day training, so the biking is a lot less. One of my closer friends still runs D1 distance. He is 5'5" and puts down 4-5k a day.

I worked for a construction company in the yard as a laborer for a few summers in HS. One of my jobs was to empty all the waste baskets in the office each morning. There were a dozen + offices and each would have 2-4 empties every day. Plus all the laborers in the yard would get the 24oz iced coffees. I am not a huge coffee drinker but always make my own. Not worth 2-3$ a cup, nevermind 3 a day.

well I know that since I am going for Econ, Finance or Financial Economics that they really care more about the Math score (as far as admissions)
I don't really doubt my ability (I had an 800 on the SAT) but sometimes test-taking anxiety gets the best of me. Honestly, I wish the test were right now so I wouldnt have to keep thinking about it.

But I'm getting over it now and starting a bulk of my own. A lot of your recipies have given me great ideas. Since you clearly love peanut butter a lot, I'll share a recipie with you:

My dream is UPENN because of Wharton (#1 biz school). I got wait-listed undergrad and their graduate programs are small -->more selective.
The Hawaii thing is a running joke turned serious option. I always joked with my family that I would move to Hawaii for the weather (hate New England fall and winters). 80s all year round. No insects, bad humidity, earthquakes that you may find south or west. Their program doesnt compare to some of my other options but it is my #1 choice for safe schools. So if my dreams of a top-ranked grad school are crushed, I still will have a fall-back option I can be happy with.

First off, congrats on doing so well! I actually was in a very similar situation. I also was applying to econ phd programs and fell just short of that 800 mark the 1st time around. My advisor said that I really was fine with my score, but I decided to give it one more shot. The second time around I was so much less nervous (I knew I had done fine on the first time and I was more familiar with taking the whole test on the computer) and I got the score I wanted. Not sure if hitting the 800 mark really makes a difference, but I'm glad I took it again...

Felt like I had a lot of energy after the complete (physical) day off yesterday. With 8hour work days + 45-1hr commute going and coming home, I am definitely going to be having less time. May cut back calories a tad if I cut out some cardio, and also may not have as many pics. We'll see how it goes.

"Somebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying. Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day. Do it! I say. Whatever you want to do, do it now!"

How much cardio do you do?

I like to switch it up. Sometimes I run. Recently I have gotten more into biking. I used to run XC competitively but now I just run for fun. Other days I may not do much of either if I have plans to play basketball, golf, etc. There is nothing really set in stone. Whatever I feel like doing on a given day. This is a shift away from the past where I would mandate myself to do X amount of cardio for every Y amount of calories eaten. I finally realized that having such strict guidelines for myself was doing more harm than good and hindering progress. I just decided I would do what I felt like (I like being active but just enjoy it more when it doesn't feel like I NEED to do a certain thing/amount).

That french toast from the other day looks great too, btw!

Also, how many schools did you (or anyone else) apply to? I was thinking 2-3safe, 2-3 I think I can get in, 2-3 reach.

I didn't apply to too many because it gets quite pricey and I just kept my fingers crossed! I figured if nothing good happened, I would work for a year and try again. The programs are really tiny, so the more you have interest in, the more you should apply to. Another thing to consider is that some safety schools don't offer a full ride. I don't know if that matters for you or not. Finally, don't just look at the ranking of the school. Really take a look at the projects the current doctoral students are working on to see if that school is a good fit for you. Looking back, this is something I would have done more of. Good luck!!!

Good question, how is the weight coming along D?

Good lookin' eats. Gotta love that CC ice cream. I'm thinking when I start cracking open all the random 2 pounders of econowhey I bought I'll start making it more often again. Bought some fun flavors like strawberry, raspberry, mango pineapple, cookies n cream, mochaccino and lemonade.

Unfortunately my "fun new" proteinz will all have to wait a while. I've got an older tub of ON 100% casein that I mixed with MGN Ice Cream sandwich that I've gotta burn through next, and a tub of ON's Pro Complex that I bought about a year ago that expires mid 2011 I'd like to get through as well. Not that I mind, both of them taste good and have great profiles, I just prefer the little 2 pounders for variety lately ;)

Workout: Chest, bis

Probably a dumb question, but I'm a newbie so bear with me. How do you guys manage to change up what you eat from day to day so radically and still hit your macros? Calories would be easy for me, but I don't know how to do the macros so good as you guys. Eats look good, that's why I ask.

I ballpark my macros and worry more about my total calories. I know that Andrew writes out everything he eats so that it all adds up, and I suspect D4k spreadsheets his.

I suspect D4k spreadsheets his.
Excel is a beautiful device
I have all the foods I eat inserted in one sheet and another sheet for my daily intake (which pulls values from the first sheet), a third sheet where I copy and paste my daily intake into a log, and a fourth sheet to log my workout.

But Its really not that hard, if you think in terms of servings
4 oz chicken=1 scoop whey = 1 can tuna
1/3c oats=1 slice bread=4oz potato=1/2c rice
etc. etc.
Just replace one item with another (scaled however you eat them).

I have a list of foods I typically eat, and plan tomorrow's meals the day before on Excel using trial and error until I've come within an acceptable range of my macros. Things like cereal, olive oil, and chicken/protein powder/tuna make lagging macros easy to bring up to where I'd like them to be if I simply can't make anything else fit.

You love your broccoli :D Looks good!

Since it has been almost a month since you said you were just going to go by "feel" instead of weighing, do you think it might be wise to just check? If you feel like seeing the number might be a negative thing for you, you might even do a blind weight check with a doctor or something. I think it may be a good idea for you. I've gone through periods without the scale and lost without being aware of it. Just my thoughts :)

Hows you weight gain? What's your intake currently?

LMAO. thanks. Ya that sh*t does get so annoying. Everyones body is different and a lot of people fail to realize that. I will only give my two sense if the person is actually losing weight instead of gaining(if their goal is to gain) or if they complain about not being able to eat enough cals..

Work is decent :). Commute is not :(. Mapquest has it pegged as 45minutes but it is taking 1:20 with traffic in the AM. I fly for 40 minutes and the last couple of miles is a parking lot. Oh, well, no way around it. Money is ok and the experience will be good.

I like the attitude about gauging progress visually and by what's going in the gym as opposed to what a number reads. At the end of the day, thats all that really matters. How you see and view yourself.

thanks. I bought a bunch of boxes when it was on sale and have whipped right through it.
I like the peanut flour too. Almond flour not as much. But I never liked AB as much as PB, despite how everyone else raves about it.
I love mixing things with different concoctions all the time and kashi works well that way.

Friday I was already a little tired after a long week and could feel my chest still from Thursday. I decided to take it easier and hit some of the smaller muscle groups. Did some curls, weighted pullups, lats, and abs. Came home ate a big meal and took a nap (felt wiped). Looked forward to sleeping in Saturday.

I honestly try not to buy any other but can only get it near my hometown when I visit my parents. Would have bought more...but I only have one freezer. Don't need to worry too much about things going bad because the eggs are good thru July 9th, CC for a month, cheese a couple months, and I can freeze some of the wraps, cheese and all the spinach. http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab223/determined4000/others/Picture980.jpg?t=1275519511

Also had some of a powerbar, frozen spinach w/ EVOO and garlic

Macros:
2300
207g protein
80g fat
188g carbs

End up doubling up portion sizes and less variety with less prep cooking time but still enjoying the eats.

Workout: Shoulders, bis, 1/2legs
4 x shoulder press
4 x upright rows
4 x curls
4 x weighted pullups
5 x squats

Doing some more back (lats) tomorrow along with deadlifts (also using legs), so sorta doing a half leg workout today and half tomorrow. This allows me to get through my workout a little faster because my arms can rest a little while working legs and vice versa, so less rest time between sets.

If any sports fans out there who want to weigh in on Celts-LA. People here are far too baised. A month ago the C's were dead in the water and now people think they will walk over LA.
Wondering how people feel around the country (or if they even care)
I think it comes down to officiating and if Kobe can get to the line-->edge LA
or if the refs let them play physical -->edge C's
Hoping for a long series so I hvae more games to watch :)

Pizza Omlette? Nice! Never heard.

Smart revision to splitting up the legs.

Lakers. In six. Kobe gets his fifth ring. His will and drive supercedes all Celtic players put together! Guy is on a mission. Revenge factor is going to be huge.

The player to watch is Pau Gasol - IMO. He will want redemption and think he will do quite well in this series. I honestly believe he and Lamar Odom will be the difference. Andrew Bynum will be a non-factor but wont be a huge blow.

The most intriguing match up will be Ron Artest on Paul Pierce. That should be interesting.

Bad day today
Fire alarm in my complex went off during the night. Got little sleep. Had to work late and the hit traffic coming home. Got home much later than usual and was wasted from getting so little sleep. I started my workout but was going half speed and felt like crap, so I just stopped. I came home and just dove straight into bed. Fell asleep for an hour or so. I had absolutely no appetite still and felt guilty for not really getting in my workout. Didn't eat nearly enough, nor did I feel like it. Things have been going so well, I really hope this doesn't set me back. I can't afford to have days like these, especially when I know how they can be triggering and cyclical.

EATS: No pics today. Wasn't in the mood to snap any, didn't make anything appetizing.
Workout: sucked

I must and will get back on the bandwagon. Must be accountable to myself.

Lesson one: Don't even ATTEMPT to workout if you don't sleep. Your body would do better to simply have the REST (use the time to have a nap instead). ;)

Lesson two: Know your triggers and FIGHT them. If being tired and worn down = trigger. When you are tired be PROACTIVE and go about getting your nutrition as a priority. Set your phone to alarm every 3 hrs and make it a routine for the day.... << it is about being ACTIVE in your choices.

Lesson three: Sometimes it is not about WHAT you do - but HOW you react.... (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?p=379665641#post379665641)... so use what ever you can to react better in the future, to make your decisions stronger (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?p=353566961&post353566961)....

Watch out for yourself, D.... Be better tomorrow....

Scooter4

D, things like that happen, it's life. I doubt you will have any problem getting back in the swing of things tomorrow (or whenever it might be considering you said you log a day late). You know you didn't eat enough due to what happened. Maybe put down 2700 calories the next day to make up for it. Throw yourself a little bit of a curve ball and see what happens.

The reason I say that is because I notice your macros are spot-on nearly every day. I think it would be cool if you could throw down some extra calories every once in a while. :)

**** sucks, I know, but just remember that BB isn't just a one day thing, it's a habit created over a period of time. Get back into the loop the next day and you'll be fine. I had a similar night last night (kind of opposite of you though). I had work from noon to 11PM after I had already done a 20 mile bike ride and only got to eat breakfast. I got home exhausted and ate a bit much (probably 200 over maintenance) for my cutting goals. I'm not too worried as today I'm feeling great and I know that it won't really hurt me in the long run. Best of luck man, get back with it!

Surprised how well the workout went considering how bad I felt yesterday and how little I ate. Certainly felt like making some tasty foods got my appetite back and calories up. Tomorrow will be shoulders, and bis. Need to start building those bi's up for the girls , lol(even though I really prefer the shoulder portion of the workout more).
FEED the MUSCLE! (my new motto)

For the record 54 fouls called, 67free throws attempt and 10 FTA for Kobe--> Lakers win
So if my predictions hold true (officiating dictating the winner) I think the Lakers will take Game 2, and if this does happen, look for the refs to loosen it up and let them play so the series isn't a short one-->C's win 3 and 4.

PS- Thanks for all the words of wisdom and support after the other day.

Felt good to get out on the bike which I don't think I had done since work started. Long days with work now vs school, but its nice having nothing to do on the weekends. Sunday the plan is to prep a bunch of food for this week so I don't have to do much when I get home from work. Also will watch Yanks and Celtics. The refs are trying to ruin a great matchup. Ticky Tack fouls. Glad to see it evened up, and hoping for a 7gamer. But Pierce needs to shutup about it not going back to LA. Please. Lakers are too good. he said the same thing when they were up 2-0 against the hapless Magic. Plus he was 2-11 for 10 points. I live in RI/MA but I can't stand him. Allen is a class act though so I am happy he was able to light it up. Some people in my office have tickets to games 3-5. Too bad I am the new guy.

Thanks man.

Good food doesnt have to be hard to make or unhealthy.
For wing sauce I use a 1:1 ratio of Frank's and Promise (high in omega3) and then dash in some garlic and onion powder. Toss the chicken (you can use wings, legs, breasts) in a gallon ziploc with the sauce (I marinate overnight) and then toss them in the oven (I use disposable aluminum baking pans).

should be interesting. Odom has been MIA. Artest was 1-10 in Game 2 and Kobe was in foul trouble. On the other side Pierce and KG have done nada and Perk is this close to getting himself suspended. Fingers crossed for a 7 game series.

A lot of gyms have belts you can attach weights to

Pancakes made easy:
2 parts dry ingredients (baking mix, flour, whey, cocoa,)
1 part egg (whites or whole, 1.25c whites=1egg)
1+ part liquid (water or milk)
dash baking powder and flavoring (cinnamon, ginger, pumpkin spice, extracts, etc.)
So for every 1c dry ingredients, you want 1/2c egg and 1/2-3/4c liquid ingredients.

These pancakes didn't have any whey which is why they look like 100% pancakes. The higher the ratio of protein, the less pancakey it will taste

Work is going well but traffic still sucks. Luckily I have been busy the last few days so time at work has gone by. Also Downloading a lot of podcasts to listen to during my commute.
It is nice to be able to come home and relax (no hw finally).
Eats were tasty. Trying to do a few different things and was wodering if anyone had ideas for veggies. I eat a lot of spinach and broccoli. Looking for other ideas or twists if any1 has any.

Dang man, back and legs in the same day. I give you credit, that has got to be a taxing workout!

Are you an asparagus fan at all? From time to time I enjoy grilling up some bacon wrapped asparagus spears (either pork or turkey) on the grill. Do you like peppers? You can always get creative with stuffing red or green peppers with ground beef, cheese, etc. Brussel sprouts / cabbage? Just a few thoughts that popped in my mind. Eats are looking great!

hey D, how big are those chicken breats and how long did it take to cook em? I just made mine and they were about 3oz so I eat about 2. Also, did you make the dough for the pizza? last time I made a pizza I bought whole wheat flat bread, low fat cheese, chicken breast, mushroom and spinach.

I generally cook the chicken 6-7 minutes probably on the foreman. I dont really time it at all, just watch it. But I would guess more than 5 but certainly less than ten. Depends on thick they are. 3oz seems rather small so i dont think it would take you long at all.

good ideas, especially the peppers, which I have done before but not in awhile. I never had brussell sprouts though. Keep the ideas coming.

Hey! Ive been lurking in your thread for weeks, and your an inspiration for me-and someone i look up to here and it seems as if you are more then knowledgeable about nutrition and lifting...just thought id say that

How does the kashi/whey/pb taste? What whey do you use, and how much pb? I love kashi just iwth milk...pb and chochlate whey sounds yummmmy

also how much eggs do you use in your omlets?

Thanks bro and keep up the GREAT work!

Thanks bro and keep up the GREAT work!

I switch it up all the time. Chocolate and PB work great. But I also LOVE my cake batter MGN whey (that is what I used in this batch). As I said, how much I use for anything I make depends on what I need for the day, what I feel like eating, whatever I want to experiment with for the day. Sometimes I may add just a take a tbsp of whey, drizzle some water in it to make a syrup and pour it on. Other times I may make a full sludge with a scoop+ of whey, 2-3tbsp PB and make almost a bar out of the cereal.
For the omelets, sometimes I use 2 whole eggs. Sometimes 6. Sometimes I use 2 eggs and extra whites. Most times I use about 2 slices cheese per 3 eggs, and as many veggies as I can fit. Sometimes I will dice up meat (chicken, turkey, ham) and toss that in as well. I eat many of the same foods each day so I get my variety by switching up the ratios ad flavors I use.

Glad I can be an inspiration. Just keep your goals in mind to stay motivated, eyes ahead, no looking back, eat big, train hard, get strong.

Ok guys, sorry for not posting in awhile.
Right now I get up, ready for work, out the door a little after 6am. Get home, workout and its 6-7pm (long commutes). Depending on whatever else I may be doing, I don't have a lot of relaxation time.
Thus, I am doing most of my cooking in bulk on Sundays. I honestly, don't feel like taking more time to make things look nice, snap pics, upload pics, and post pics. Plus, cooking in bulk-->Nothing spectacular. Maybe I will do a weekly progress report with a couple pics per week until the fall?

I say do what you have to do. Weekly updates obviously better than nothing.

I say twice a week postings though:) Say like Wed and Sunday. That way you can update a couple training sessions/nutrition mid-week and then again at the end of the week. Accountability too.

Will take 20min of your time.

Just my two cents.

but if you want to keep fighting the weight thing, no worries man, i wont ask anymore

just stay healthy ok

i had a friend who had anorexia. she would eat fine with us.
but barely anything else when by herself.

and cut out any cardio (biking, running, jogging)
if you really want to gain weight, you should spend more time lifting and eating.
constantly working out is just breaking yourself down further.
remember, you can only grow at rest.

you make pancakes with flour, eggs and milk
Same as bread. Neither make you fat from eating it. Eating in too large a calorie surplus=fat gain. Focus on eating healthy (whole grain bread instead of white) and lifting hard and you should be fine

recipe for that bread please? haha
NOTE: This is forgotten pulse's original recipe

1 Cup Oats
1 Cup Water
1/2 Cup Milk
1/2 Cup Chunky Applesauce
1 Scoop Protein (I use Dymatize 12 Hour Banana Nut)
1 Tbsp Baking Powder
1 Tbsp Sweetener (splenda or whatever)
1 Whole Egg
Dash vanilla extract & cinnamon

I then blend all this, pour in bread pan, and bake at 380 degrees anywhere from 20-35 minutes. That's a big variance right there, but for some reason it's never the same. I bake this at night, so I usually just sit down and read and check on it every 3-4 minutes after ~25 minutes. Once I poke a knife in it and nothing comes off on it, I remove from oven. Let it sit for 15 minutes, remove from bread pan, and I wrap it in foil and let it sit in fridge. I have it for breakfast with some coffee. ~700kcals

D -->> why are you IF'ing?
Not the *best* option for you at this time....

I was wondering this myself...
Although I think it truly is great that you're addressing your problems with food, as I know how difficult that can be. But I had found myself thinking that IF'ing is essentially moving from one type of abnormal eating habit to another. Surely, in order to overcome an eating disorder, one of the key focuses should be to recorrect and 'normalize' eating habits. Also taking into consideration that anorexia involves depriving the body of food, is IF not essentially quite similar, with the exception of eventually satisfying your hunger?
D, I just wanted to know your thoughts on this, and any justifications for why you think it really is the best approach to overcoming an ED. Fair play if you find it works for you, but I would like to hear what you had to say...

hey D i had a question about some nutrition thing.

So i'm working on a bulk atm (well i have been for the past 3 months or so)

and becoming very interested in the facts about calories in and calories out, i read numerous sources (both supported and bro science sources) and they are equally weighing out in the terms of conflicting with each other's conclusions...

so i'm still wondering if the whole cals in and cals out thing is even true? So heres an example...
Example 1: I eat junk all day without worrying about protein and other sources, so my diet is made up of chocolates, ice cream, and frys, etc. but with some meats here and there.

Example 2: i eat whatever i want but worry about achieving the protein goal per day (aiming for about 150-160g a day) but along with the protein im eating crap like fries and ice cream

Example 3: I eat extremely healthy achieving my macros, spinach salads, healthy sandwiches, and baked potatoes, and healthy home cooked stuff.

My question is, even if i surplus on calories on all the situations, will the type of gain all be exactly the same? (yes i understand my nutrition micros arent met, like vitamins) but without that factor, all my gains should be exactly the same nonetheless the source of calories its coming from? (protein, fat, carbs)

I know this was directed at D, but I will respond to it as well.

A calorie from fat is a calorie from fat, a calorie from carbohydrates is a calories from carbohydrates, and a calorie from protein is a calorie of protein. You could hit all your macros by eating french fries, hamburgers, ice cream, and chips if you wanted to. Your body composition would be no different than if you ate sweet potatoes, nuts, olive oil, chicken breast, and oatmeal to hit your macros.

All in all, macros are macros. You can eat whatever you want as long as you hit them. However, general health is another story. You certainly wouldn't be healthy if you ate McDonalds and Burger King every day because of the quality of their food.

Exactly.
I was going to reply with pretty much the exact same.

I think if you find the correct balance, you can still fit the pizza/burgers/fries into your diet if you so choose. Hell, ice cream and certain kinds of candy are foods that I enjoy. And, I have the ability to fit those into my diet on a day-to-day basis without "cheating".

However, the majority of my calories do still come from "clean" foods... lean meats, cheeses, broccoli, whole grains, oats, peanut butter, etc etc.

determined4000
06-30-2010, 02:27 PM
D -->> why are you IF'ing?
Not the *best* option for you at this time....

I have been for 18months +
It helps me mentally enjoy life, family, friends, focus on work/school
I don't have to think about food, eating, what to eat, when to eat, packing food, buying food, etc.
I can just come home after school/work and prepare my meals and that is that.
I also have completely lost any hunger triggers over the years. So when I was eating 6x a day, I would often have no problem skipping meals. Sometimes I would feel like I shouldn't be eating because I wasn't hungry and thought my body should be telling me when to eat (which it never did). I would not want to "make up for" missed meals later though because I didn't feel right eating double. With IF, I know I am "supposed to" and "need to" get in all my calories in my time slot. It just falls into the routine.
But as I said, I started for social reasons. I could never enjoy any part of my life because my thoughts were always consumed with food. I could not focus or enjoy others at all.
Lastly, IF has helped me the most break my obsessive exercise compulsion. I literally used to exercise after each time I ate something (everytime). Eat breakfast, exercise, eat a snack, exercise, etc, etc. I ended up exercising for hours every day. Now I have the ground rules that I will not exercising once I start eating, so I want get that impulse to start the eat -->exercise cycle. So I finish my workout (only 1) and then my eating period starts. No activity allowed.

IMO, ex. 1 would not achieve results because protein intake is inadequate.
ex.2 and 3 will achieve results but are not completely healthy either. Ex.2 you are eating crap, which may not make a difference in the shrot term, but your overall health will not be as good in the long run. I also think garbage in= garbage out in terms of energy levels and well-being if it is really all junk.
Ex. 3 is probably going to lead to obsessing and psychological stress over time. I have been victim of this.
In terms of macros, 1-1.5g/lb in protein and .4-.5g/lb in fat. Fill in the rest with whatever you want. That is what I would recommend. Eat healthy, but allow yourself to enjoy other things as well. Don't look at diet or anything in terms of black and white/ all or nothing.

Bingo.

sweet guys. thanks for the answers so quick, so the answer is, yes macros are macros. If i choose to eat crap sources, i still need to eat the right amount of protein/fat/carbs or it IS different from sources such as oatmeal.

Ya ive been eating almost clean for every meal which seems to work for my sanity, gains are lacking a little recently because i keep on hitting diet plateaus it seems, im constantly upping my cals its ridiculous on how much it has gone up. Didnt know my metabolism was that shot.

Typically ive been eating high carbs on full body workout days (like when i do squats or deadlifts) then medium on days when i do chest or my arms, then low on the days i take off

im keeping the calories realitively the same even on off days since i figured my body needs to the extra source of nutrition since i certainly have none on my body to spare.

Hey, D, How bout an update?

Alright.
I will give an update.
Still working long hours and don't have a lot of time to make the prettiest and tastiest of concoctions. Been doing a lot of bulk cooking because of so little time during the week. I have also come to the realization that I have to take a break from counting macros. Essentially there is no point for me to do it. I can really just focus on calories because my fat and protein intake is going to meet minimums no matter what. But even looking at the numbers effects my food choices. I also have had a problem in the past being OCD about how much I spend on my food. Part of my spreadsheet which calculates my macros had a column that tallied up the expense of what I was eating based on servings and price per serving. Consequently I end up choosing what to eat based on how I can save money and hit exact macro numbers, then doing my best to make it tasty (which it still was). However, I just want to be able to eat freely and just eat what I feel like at that moment. Not planning it out to fit X amount of protein, fat ,etc or saving a few dimes by eating X instead of Y.

Lifting. I feel like I have regressed a little becuase I haven't had time to work out as much :(. I am trying to rework my routine schedule so I can get my lifts back up. I have about a month and a half left for this internship, then I have one semester left in school. I will have a lot of time in the fall to really hit the gym, kitchen and dinner table hard, so I am just doing my best to get through the rest of summer and looking forward to putting on legit muscle and mass in the fall.

Eating. I have changed up a few things. I have ditched my casein for some 12hour Dymatize at night. The stuff is amazing. It also has some added benefits of things like flaxseed, a protein mix (also contains egg, milk matrix, peptides), and is 12 hour digesting vs 6-7 of casein. Seeing as how I fast 17-19 hours, I only see it as a plus. The fudge brownie makes my mouth water and I use in baking. Vanilla makes fantastic ice cream.
I also like the thickness. I give it a solid 9 of 10.

I also got into special K protein plus (big sale when I was still obsessing over $) and loaded up. Stuff is great 100calories, 10g protein, 3g fat, 5g fiber and kind of reminds me of the taste of wheaties. Also great with different flavors of whey.

Thirdly, I bought some walnuts. Really high in omega 3 rather than omega 6 like most other nuts. They don't have as much flavors as almonds so I decided to make them candied walnuts with cinnamon and a simple syrup.

Well thats what I have been up to. Maybe if I have time I will try to post some food pics more often. Without counting macros and $ anymore I have been trying a lot of different foods recently. Over and out.

Really hope that you don't believe that.

Good stuff though, those Special K are pretty good, tried em recently.

You probably havent seen much of me but ive lurked in this journal since it started since I see you around the boards alot. I gotta say not counting is a big step and once you can stop being so OCD about everything it makes life ALOT easier.

Elite 12 Hour is my favorite protein. I love the Fudge Brownie and Banana Nut. How does the Vanilla stand up because ive never tried it?

Thanks for following.
I have not tried banana. I heard it was really good but I already have banana whey that is really strong, so I figured if I wanted some banana flavor I would just add a tbsp of that to the vanilla. I would put it up there as the best vanilla I have had along with ON casein's. Better than any vanilla whey's or blends I have had. I like the fudge brownie because it is not the typical chocolate flavor. You can really make some fudge like brownies using eggs, cocoa powder and flour with it. And thick like a casein which I like.
There is also a blueberry although I have heard to stay away from that one.

Just a note about the walnuts - they are higher in omega 3s, but only because they have about 3x more PUFA overall compared to other nuts. They also have 3x more the Omega 6s.

Right.. which is what I said in my OP.

Just sayin, if your looking to boost your omega 3 - 6 ratio which is usually the concern, walnuts aren't gonna do it for you really.

I realize that. They are just better (ratio) than almonds and I wanted something different.
Flax and and fish oil are probably your best bet for 3:6 ratio.

Hi D!

I just read through the entire 25 pages! It was an inspiring and interesting read :)

I wonder about the mexican mash! No one asked for the recipe, but I found it interesting, I'm more into savory than sweet foods.

Also, I have just yesterday decided to get off my ass of having little to no gains, being afraid of gaining fat, and eating 1,500 calories a day for months. I'm 5'4", around 130lbs, and its great to find someone of similar height who I can relate to..

Thanks for the motivation. I've upped my cals to 1,800.. but just don't feel like eating any more than that!

MEXICAN Cauliflower"RICE"

1lb Cauliflower Steamed(microwaved until very soft-->smash up)

Then Add

1/2 cup salsa
Garlic powder
Salt
Pepper
Chili Powder
Paprika
1/2 an onion (sliced and sauteed)

For the cheesy version: Then you can melt cheese in or on
Fo the creamier/buttery version: I melt in a few tbsp Promise (like I can't believe its not butter)
Tastes great reheated, so you can cook in bulk and have for the week. Just wait to add the cheese or butter until you are reheating.

Why are you stuck on 1800? It is just a number. Don't fear a number. You are stronger than that.
