Most people have probably heard of Charles Poliquin, especially if they've ever read T-Nation, because he used to write heaps of articles for them. In a nutshell he's a S&C coach for athletes, rich people and has had a lot of success with Olympians. Without going into his philosophies in general too much (some which are very controversial) or certain statements he's made, I'm interested in mainly discussing his Biosignature work.

Basically, he correlated many region-specific fat deposits in his clients with hormonal problems, eg - large umbilical caliper measurement relative to triceps measurement means high cortisol levels. (I know that one is fairly well established, but others are more sketchy). He teaches people how to take accurate skin-folds of the key locations, and what this means about their hormones, and how treating these hormonal problems will cause them to lose fat in those areas (spot reduce *gasp*).

I was wondering what people think of this technology in general, have you done the course, would you ever do his course, do you know any practitioners who use it, and what sort of success they have with it? It seems like the sort of thing you either love or hate, with little middle ground.

There is some research out there that validates Poliquin's claims regarding skinfold measurements. The scapular skinfold indicating pre-diabetes and poor carbohydrate metabolism has been around a long time and is well known; as is the belly fat correlating with excess cortisol.

Poliquin does have some controversial ideas but his body of work should speak for itself--he has trained numerous pro athletes and Olympic medalists.

My football Defensive Coordinator/Strength Coach follows Poliquin and has also been certified and uses it in our program. Beginning of the year we did all the caliper stuff, and he made our programs accordingly.

Anywho he sure as hell makes a good salary, and also the strength gains as well as overall fitness and athleticism on the team speak for itself. I too am looking into taking his courses as it seems very benficial and I love the programs and feel all around more balanced strength wise, and a lot more healthy.
