View Full Version : The Road To My 1st amateur boxing fight
02-19-2010, 06:13 AM
Picked up a new gym and a trainer. I am going to fight this year. I have 2 1/2 years of training MMA and took a long break afterward(6-8months). I did keep active with running but its time to really pick it up. I have been on this diet for about 2 months already. I think my original weight was 173+ I am now at 163lb and still plenty to cut down on.
8:30am: Oatmeal w/ peanut butter and blueberries
12:15-12:30pm: Special K Cereal w/ apple or a banana & blueberries in cereal
3:30-4:30pm: Varies in food.(normally chicken, brown rice, beans, from a restaurant)
5:00/6:00pm-7:30pm: Train w/ friends (M/W/F)
9:00-9:30pm: Tuna sandwich w/ almonds
Before sleep: Yogurt
My trainer was going over some basic boxing to start me off. For the most part he enjoyed what he saw but he definitely told me he has many things he needs to tweak. (range, keeping a better plant on my right foot for jab, etc.) He ended it with a short circuit. ( i cant recall )
Trained with my friends we went over basic boxing drills. Followed by a circuit of 50 pull ups 70 dips and 50 burbpees.
Started with a 10min jog to warm up. After, we got into the boxing ring there was a rope connecting from one side to the other. We where already practicing my movements for the hooks walking forward and backwards going side to side followed by a combination.
He put on the mitts and we started working some basic combos while constantly having me move away from punches.
After the mitt work I moved on to 3 different bags the regular heavy bag, the windy bag and the egg bag. He was saying how I really got a better understanding of using my jab for boxing.
We ended the training with a short circuit a little harder this time but nothing crazy.
I was feeling good after the boxing workout so I decided to hit the gym after I had a granola bar for some energy.
Legs: Everything was 4 sets and 10 reps
-Machine for hamstring
Then ended workout with some abs.
I did not want to over do it so I only did 3 exercises.

I walked into the gym I got to see some of the Pro boxers practicing its amazing how they move around with such ease and throw with deadly precision, sometimes you could feel to ground shake from some of those hits! It is great motivation for me to train harder so I can look like them. My legs were sore from the gym yesterday -.-. I Started off with some jump rope for about 10min to warm up and some stretches.
My trainer quickly got me into the ring as we started working again on my range and a variety of combos. One of them consisted of him throwing the rear hook I would duck under and follow it with a jab, he would throw the lead hook I would duck under and come in with me straight right. Movement was key, I was moving around the ring 90% of the time just about after every combo or when he would chase me down as I would pivot away quickly. I was feeling a little more gassed than usual, sure he was working me harder but the workout from the other day and school has taken its toll on me.
After the mitt work it was straight to some conditioning. Again it was nothing hard in my opinion but still challenging. One of the exercises I would start just about flat on my back with my legs out in front of me a bit and I would have to explode up into a standing position. I did a few more exercises after that and hit some abs. Overall I had a great time at the gym today.
It was also time for my "secret training!!!" as I like to call it. I went to do some salsa dancing for a club at one of the colleges in the area ;D. Foot Work! Foot Work! Foot Work!

Went to a park and ran 1 mile straight through, then 2 separate 1/2 miles(15min warm up legs felt sore and tight). I went to the Boxing gym afterwards did a few rounds on the bag and some shadowboxing tweaking some of my punches. Looking to relax tomorrow feeling tired.

Rest day. I just did some catching on on school work and went to a nice Peruvian restaurant... slipped in a cheat meal there.
Woke up and felt kinda sore(legs) and tired, only got about 6 hours of sleep if that.
I called my trainer when I got to the gym but apparently I wrote down the wrong number so i could not get in touch with him >.<! So I ended up doing 15min of jump rope to warm up and a light stretch. By then it was 2:30 and I figured that maybe my trainer got caught up with some other matters. I was doing rounds on the bags, 1st round on the egg bag, 2nd round on Heavy bag, 3rd round on a lighter bag.
Its about 3:00 pm now and my trainer walked in. He was caught up on some matters but it was cool, we stepped right into the ring and started doing about 30min of mitt work. My jab was looking cleaner and my upper cuts were finding their range. My movement is definitely getting a lot better but I still get stuck of course and do a wrong movement when I get all caught up. I still need to work on my straight right I don't know why its coming out half ass.
Overall it was another good training session built up a good sweat and I feel MAJOR improvements only after 4 sessions training with him.
Started training with some of my friends. We got some new stuff we ordered off title boxing. A pair of mitts, hand wraps, groin protectors, head gear, some people ordered new boxing gloves, etc. It was like Christmas but in February.
Started off by doing some jump rope to warm up. We all lined up and started working on basic movement along with some punches. Again I really felt my movement has improved I was moving smoother with the calls that were being given.
After that we jumped right into sparring.( Before I continue this group has been working on basic boxing skills for over 2 months or so 2-3 times a week. So in case anyone thinks its just a bunch of people being idiots, its not the case.) It was the 1st time for many people sparred but they all did real well for their 1st time.
Luckily the friend I was sparring was already opening my eyes to holes I have in my fight mainly it was when I would over commit on a punch I had a nice counter waiting for me.

Had about 3 hours of sleep today went to sleep at 3:00am woke up at 6:30am. Had some school work that had to be done and a test today at 10:00am. As soon as I got home I took a nap from 12:00pm to 1:15pm.
Started off with a 5-7min Jog on a tread mill to warm up and some stretching. Again we step into the ring. This time the mitt work is getting way more intense than before. We were not going with the round timer so to be honest I don't know how long the rounds were they felt about 4-5min of non stop punching, moving, combinations.(1min break between rounds)
Last week and yesterday the gym was relatively cool as far as temperature. But now that its not cold/raining in Miami right, we are back to 80+ degrees. The gym was on fire! Luckily it was cloudy today but I can imagine when we get the sun starts the get through the windows. Half way through the training session my shirt was soaked in sweat it was as if someone threw me into the pool and while getting out pelted me with water balloons.
After about 15-25 min or so of mitt work he had me do a small circuit.
x60 abs ( left,middle, and right sides x20 each)
x15 benching as fast as I could with 65lb (felt easy)
x15 of leg extensions, fast going up slow coming down. (not so bad)
x50 abs (2 sets of 25 very short rest in between)
To finish off it was 10min of jump rope and I spent another 10min stretching.
Overall I was more tired from the mitt work than the circuit, he was really pushing the pace. Again every day feels like I am improving more and more. On a side note when I went out side I was squeezing the sweat off my shirt... was a a lot of sweat.

warm up: 10min jump rope
Something new today. I started with 4 rounds on 3 different bags that would have different combinations on. All the bags had there own number and after the round the bags would switch combos so I would have to remember what do to while my coach would call out the different bags to run to. On the 4th round he added crunches into the mix, so whenever he said to go down I would just start to rep them out.( was exhausting since I was making sure I kept a hard pace)
After that he had me do 3 short rounds of Front rolls for a good 15-30 seconds fast then get up and start punching. The room was going in circles but it seemed like my punches were going straight forward.
I cant really remember all the conditioning we did but...
x150 crunches (50 w/ left leg up then right leg then both on floor.)
x80 machine crunches. (he added some weight not sure how much)
x100 push ups (broken into 20)
some more ab work
then finished up with a light 10min jog.

Today was a light workout. Started off with a 10min jog to warm up after I got inside the ring and did 2 rounds of shadow boxing. I put on my gloves and started 3-4 rounds of mitt work. After the mitt work it was back on the treadmill to do 10min of a cool down jog followed by a stretch.
Overall I think this was a great day to have a light workout. I felt pretty beat today maybe it was from the last workout yesterday or just from all of them together. I got about 8-9 hours of sleep so I'm not really sure why I didn't feel as good. maybe tomorrow I will have something a little more exciting.

Could not train today due to a few things that came up. If I can, I might get a run in later on tonight. I plan on waking up early to hit the gym tomorrow around 9am lets see how that goes.

Woke up at around 8am got about 7~ hours of sleep.
My trainer ended up running a little late so I started at around 10:00pm. Started my warm up with 10min on the treadmill. We started to do some work with the mitts. My straight right is starting to land a lot better from the other training sessions. I'm starting to feel my punches hitting a bit harder and my stance & movement is really coming together with better flow.
As far as the other portion of training. It included a lot of jumping with push ups or bear crawls with jumps, moving my legs front and back rapidly 4 times to a jump. Then ended with some abs.
There were 2 kick boxers there and they let me jump in with them. I got to do some work with them they also did some jiu jitsu so it was cool getting to do that again. Probably spent another 30min or so practicing with them.
Over all I felt really good today just wished I didn't have to miss Friday. With my new trainer I see improvement almost on a daily basis and it feels great.

Just adding a picture of what the gym kinda looks like. (phone pic from yesterday)

Woke up early today around 7:30-8:00am. Decided I would go to the gym to do some power exercises.
x5 warm up
x10 4 sets
Another exercise where you are holding the weight on your side and then explode as if you were going to punch the sky. (I forgot the name)
Stability Push ups
6 minutes for cool down.

Got in the gym 10 minutes on the treadmill to warm up. Put on my wraps and gloves and immediately started to hit the mitts. The 1st 2 rounds included moving out of the way of a Jab or straight right and followed by 1 or 2 hits and movement... lots of movement. For the other rounds (lost count of how many) he put on the protection vest for the body. So we continued with the counters to jab, right, hooks, and making it a point to really move out of the way even after you have countered and moved previously.
He had me do a short circuit training afterwards. Basically burpees and a few other exercises. To end it did some abs going a little over 100 reps.
I felt off today, it wasn't too bad but I felt it. It was probably due to the partying I did the day before.
My friends and I got some good training in. We started with movement drills as usual. I would get caught up in the mix of moving every so often nothing too bad.
After the movement drills we moved on to the mitts did about 6 rounds or so of about 3 minutes. Some of us with more experience were showing the others that have never done it before. For the most part everyone who did not know how to hold mitts were doing a good job for their 1st time holding.
We ended with a few rounds of body sparring. Everyone is looking a lot better and defending the body shots well. It was harder than usual to get past their defense which is great! Overall another great session with my friends.
More side notes:
My index knuckle is a little messed up from 2 weeks prior. Some of the skin came off today (I lent a hand in taking it off :/). Been putting hydrogen peroxide on it after both training sessions and then some ointment on it. Its not bad enough that I have to stop punching so thats good.
The power training left my legs and shoulders sore. I think I will have to do that training on a Saturday.
03-03-2010, 05:32 AM
As usual warmed up 10 min on the treadmill. After I put on my gloves and started working on only my jab on one of the bags. Jab, hooks, uppercuts (only with left hand) for about 4-5 minutes.
About 3 rounds of mitt work. The cut on my knuckle slowed me down since the skin still isn't healed.
My coach took out a long PVC pipe with a glove at the end and started practicing my slipping and ducking under hooks followed with the counter to whatever he threw.
Took off my gloves after the drill and picked up two 10lb weights. I would do a 1-2 combination walking forward and backwards for about 4-5 Min. Then I would practice uppercuts with weights for 4-5 min. Then the last round without the weights and throwing the 1-2 combo and ending with uppercuts.
For conditioning he had me do a few sprints nothing crazy was light.

My trainer was running late so I decided to do my own warm up consisting of jump rope and shadow boxing. When my trainer arrived we hit the mitts for a few rounds my knuckle is still tender so i could not put so much force into my lead hand punches.
He was teaching some new movements. How to properly hit while taking steps back. How to come over with the lead how when a straight right is being thrown and how to dodge the straight right and counter with a lead hook while pivoting. These new moves sound easy but they are not at all. There has to be a good foot and hand balance while executing the movement to make the hits hard while getting out of the way.
We ended with 80 machine crunches (left, right, mid section x20), 2 sets of 25 crunches on an incline, 10 crunches with left leg up then right leg then regular crunches (x30).
I really wish i didn't pick on the skin that was coming off my knuckle and just left it there. For the most part the cut is not too deep but just enough to feel some sting if I use power in my lead hand.
I started off by feeding mitts to two of my friend for a few rounds. I was feeling lethargic I'm not 100% sure why, maybe if was from the training in the morning or just school or a mix. But i really felt like I was in my own world shadow boxing aimlessly.
We started off with our movement drills getting better with moving fluently with the commands. But of course I would get caught sometimes going the wrong way. After the movement drills we did body sparring. Again, everyone is getting better keeping their defense tight for the body. I remember 2 weeks ago were I could throw a punch and expect it to land on the body (with the novice) now they are moving with the punches etc. its crazy how quickly people can learn.
I had to cut it short and leave at 7:00pm I had a test the next day. But as I was leaving they started doing slipping drills.

(short summaries today)
My coach looks like he is getting sick from the weather change so didn't do mitts today instead worked on bag drills. 3 different bags 3 different combos for each for 4 rounds. I made sure I kept up an intense pace.
Ended with some circuit work.
Coach was really sick today basically told me to keep my distance so i didn't get what he had.
10min on treadmill followed by 3 rounds of shadow boxing. After that I hit the bag working on some combinations for about 15-20min.
Cutting it short because I have to leave soon...
Movement drills ( about 10-15min)
Defensive work ( about 45min)
small break to gear up for sparring
will put up notes tomorrow. I do plan on taking a kick boxing/Sambo class tomorrow at around 9:30am. Will try to get some pic's in.
