So I'm going to be doing my first show this year (2010 Oregon Ironman) in May of 2010. Five months out should give me plenty of time to get ready for the show but since this is my first show I have some questions.

I've been getting some people telling me that I don't need to tan at all and instead I should just be applying bronzer and other stuff about two weeks before competition. Then I've got some other people saying I need to be tanning a whole lot several months before competition because tanning not only makes you darker but it also makes your skin thinner and therefore you can see the muscle more.

I don't know where the idea came from that tanning would make your skin thinner but I figured I'd ask you guys what your thoughts are on that. Is there any truth to it?

I don't really want to be blowing money left on right on tanning when I'm not pasty white to begin with and I could simply apply skin stains and bronzers a few weeks before the competition.

Anyways, I'd like to hear what everyones thoughts are on this matter and the subject of tanning in general.

Tan to get vit D, and to relax / stay happy. Don't tan because you need to before the comp. Pro tan and dream tan will get you as dark as you need to get. Besides you need to exfoliate before you apply the tanner so you remove a fair bit of your tan as it is. As for thinning the skin. I wouldn't place any money on that one. Diet diet diet will get you thin skin.

Thank you! You confirmed my beliefs. Pro Tan and Dream Tan is the combination I plan on using for this competition. I might do a bit of normal tanning just for the Vitamin D as you suggested.

Have you ever considered have the Jan Tana crew do your tanning professionally at the Ironman?? It certainly is one less thing to worry about and you are guaranteed good color, just a thought:). Good luck at the Ironman!!

Do they actually offer that? If so, how much is it? To be honest with you this will be my first competition ever so I'm new to all of this. I wasn't aware they offered anything like this at the Ironman.

Oh and thanks for the good luck! It will be my first so I'll need it!

They will be offering the spray tan at your show. My wife and I have used this particular vendor before and they are good as well as efficient. You will be sprayed twice the day before the show, then given touch ups and a glaze backstage before you go on..... in my opinion, it is worth the couple of extra bucks to have the peace of mind and a consistent, streakless color. The cost is usually between $75-$100 and you can make your appointments online.

As far as your initial question about tanning.... if you are doing the Jan Tana, it is better to have some natural tan before the show as the darker you start, the darker your color will be.

Most of all, have fun and enjoy the show.... best wishes!

Wow! Thank you so much for the information and their website link. I agree with you that spending the extra money for me would be worth it because it just means one less thing I have to worry about and I know there are a lot of things to worry about when competing so this is priceless information!
