In college were you cool with the other athletes? What about regular students? I feel like most of my team only hangs out with each other or some of the other sports but not the regular students...except for girls ha!
Yeah I was cool with everyone pretty much. My good friends were my teammates though. I really didnt hang out with the regular students but always showed love when I seen them at a party

Thanks for the reply. I was considering red shirt so that I could post some impressive footage for 2 solid years of play instead of mostly focusing on my soph year. Makes sense though. I should really only need 1 good season to give schools a look at the type of player I am.
Do your thing this season.

They don't hold much stock to questionares. So just put a avg time 4.5. They will watch film and try to judge your speed from there, so no worries man. The same goes for bench press

before sending out letters to schools, do I have to send my grades and core courses first to the NCAA clearing house? and after they receive and confirm my information, do they send me a reference number or send me back a letter that I can attach to the letter i'll be sending to schools?

Send the letters to school but just make sure you register with the clearinghouse. There is no need to attach a clearinghouse letter with the letter to coaches.

well i've been reading a bit in the clearing house site and they said that student-athletes need to send their grades and courses to the NCAA clearing house, somewhere in Indiana.
So you're saying that its complete bull and sending my grades to colleges is enough?
do I attach my transcripts with my letter?
When I'll be indicating GPA, should it be the total GPA of my freshman, sophomore and junior years? or just junior(i'd rather it be just junior because now my GPA is 3.3)?
Can one sign a scholarship after the national signing day?

I played DB
I'm more of an offensive player and I played D-End on defense. Still am, at the HS Varsity level.
Can you DBs at the college level predict the WR's next movement? How do you keep up with them and read what they are going to do, cuts they are going to make, all of that. How do you guard WR's at the college level? Or is it just a big game of trying to follow him every where he goes?
I play slot and know split, so taking in what DB's do at the college level, maybe I can work on countering that this year as a junior in HS.

I played RB and DB at the HS level. Sometimes I can predict their moves but sometimes I cant. This is where film studies come into play. I just try to watch their tendacies and what plays they usually run from different formations. It is a lot more technical than following where he is going. Look at it as a game of chess, sometimes we play certain schemes to force a WR into a certain pattern, we also re-route them all the time or attempt too.

You can force them in to a certain pattern? Re-route them during play? How? At the HS level I just see DB's either trying to keep them inside or pushing them outside.

That is the difference from playing HS and D1 football. We use certain defensive schemes to shut down certain patters and defensive technique

I did not. They were not nearly as popular as they are now. Yes, they are very important to attend. Try to go to as many as possible, it is another avenue to get your name out there to recruiters.

Why do you recommend going to as many as possible? Isn't it enough to attend just one and send the results to the colleges?
I've read somewhere that coaches are NOT allowed to attend any combines, but if you're saying that attending more will get my name out there more then i guess.

The more camps you attend the more coaches see you. One coach may not like you but another may, always give your self the most oppurtunites as possible to be successful; this pretains to football and life in general. And during spring of JR yr they are allowed to attend since the camps are usually at their universities.

Stats: 5'10", 205 lbs
If you WANT to play either position at the next level, especially fullback, I'd work on putting on a little bit of weight and getting my speed into the 4.5-4.7 range...if you get to a major college then they will have all sorts of things to help get your weight and speed up. Height at linebacker really doesn't matter that much, Rennie Curran is only 5'11" 222 but he's a beast and he's fast.
If you get your speed into the 4.5 and below, I'd look at playing safety. Get your mom or dad to film all your games and get those addresses for the schools you want to go to.
1. get fast
2. play good
3. film games
4. send film to schools
5. ?????
6. profit

We did a lot of olympic lifts and overhead lifts. We also worked our hamstrings at the end of all workouts. We were given a jug of Muscle Milk. When I get back home I will try to find my old workout book and post a typical week.

Funny you ask, I just had a conversation with my brother about how often we use to sprain our ankles. In the summer, running in the sand helps. Try to train without wearing braces, some people do, some don't. A lot of simple flexion exercises with a elastic band ( sideways, front back, circular). If you incorperate all those things, you should be okay.

This routine changed frequently but it's just an idea of what we did at UK in the off-season. No I didn't gain any weight while using Muscle Milk. I got leaner but that was due to training all year around and maintaining a balance diet. Did I eat pizza, burgers, McDonalds, drink and act a fool sometime...Hell yeah I did. Confidence does first. I was expecting you to say that you were 5'4 150 or something. You are not small for any level. That 200 will turn into 220 easily by the time you graduate. My brother plays d1 LB and he came in at 6ft 190. Now he is 225.
But to further answer your second question many things come into play in regards to playing time. You must fit the scheme, create match up problems, your technique and overall ability to contribute someway. You can be the best RB but if you can't block and have a fumbling problem than you will be warming up that bench. Keep this in mind when you have a oppurtunity to showcase your talents, take full advantage of it. The window for success doesn't stay open long. Be dilligant in your work ethic and always try to get better. There is no substitute for hard work and I gurantee in due time your chance will come.

i am currently not on a team and at my first year at blinn in brenham and didnt make the football team at what i am at now but i am doing what we did in high school workout and stuff so im not out of shape at all but i do fear that a problem i had in high school was i was about 205 when i started my senior year but we ran alot and lifted alot that my weight dropped down to 185 and i started DT at a 5A school and i great for my size. Made 2nd team all district and got some school awards. so i took a year off and went to work so i could pay for blinn but i stayed in shape and kept my figure so i went into blinn at 5'9 185 and they turned me down. So i took another year to get my weight up and get stronger both in legs and arms width and so now UMHB wants me to play for them.
I guess my next question is what should i do to be even more prepared going back into the football scene and not going from 200 to 185?

No problem man, I am here to help. Which position do the coaches want you to play at UMHB? Taking years off from football is not ideal, but we are past that point. Just eat man....thats it in its simplest terms. I am not sure on your athletic ability so for me to tell you to gain 15 pounds and have that hinder your performance would be foolish of me. You should start to know your body by now and know which weight you can still function at without losing a step. Are you in spring ball now? is it going to be your first yr at the school this fall? I can better help you once I hear your responses to the questions asked.

I was just wondering if you know how come some guys can play one year and transfer out? I always thought you have to get your AA degree and then you can you transfer.
I was also wondering do schools ever recruit based potential alone I am currently 6'5 285 and plan on playing Defensive line at junior college am I going to get overlooked because I am not heavy enough? Don't most d tackles weigh at least 300LBS ? I grew up playing baseball, basketball, football, and soccer so I feel I have great footwork and coordination but I don't know if that will be enough. One more thing I ran a 5.1 40yd dash is that ok for my size? I have a lot going on in my mind because I'm thinking about whether or not I should just work or play football. Its either money or football but if feel i have a great chance at a scholarship then it will be all worth it.

It is all about semesters at the D2-D3 eligiblity time table. Size is overrated, so do not worry about it. In regards to your last comment; only you can honestly answer that.

I share the RB position in a spread offense with the coaches son. He gets the ball about 75% or the time, I get it 25%. I do spit out and get a number of catches, but I want to know if college coaches really care about how many yards you put up. I truly believe I could go D1AA or D2. If my tape shows skill, but I dont have like 1000+ yards, am I not going to get alot of attention?
Thanks

This routine changed frequently but it's just an idea of what we did at UK in the off-season. No I didn't gain any weight while using Muscle Milk. I got leaner but that was due to training all year around and maintaining a balance diet. Did I eat pizza, burgers, McDonalds, drink and act a fool sometime...Hell yeah I did. When you are active you can do that stuff. I never really payed attention to my diet during the season, I was more attentive to it during the off-season because the training volume had changed.
Would you mind posting the reps and sets? Also did you do any plyos, speed work, etc on any of the other days?

Alright so I am a sophomore going to be a junior. Last season, I started at the Strong Safety spot on varsity for my old school. They weren't that good at football. I have recently transferred to a new school that were runner-ups for the state championship. They don't have many players, never do. They played the whole season with 30 players on the roster. But the coaches there are great, and the players work their asses off. Anyhow, since transferring, I have noticed a distinct lack of strength and speed compared to the juniors. Most of the sophomore I'm bigger and faster and stronger than, because their JV didn't win a game. So I have started eating as much protein and carbs as I can, and getting a specific workout regimen to do on weekends. On weekdays, I have weight training as a class, and we do the NE Patriots workout routine, since our coach is a former patriot. I run about a 4.8 40 yard dash, and my physique is 6'3" 185. I am doing track this season, and am doing High jump, Long jump, 400, 200, and 4x400. My question is, what do you guys think I need to work on most? And what position do you suggest I play next season?

The reps and sets changed and were based off our max percentage. But like first week it was 3x10, 3x8, 3x6, 4x8, 4x5,. We did plyo's speed work mondays and wednesdays usually at 9pm

Hard to say since I do not know your skill level. With that being said, track will help your speed big time. You are a big boy so play the position you like. With your size and if you are good then you will def garner a lot of attention from college coaches. Ask the coaches where they planned on using you at, so you know what to work on.

what do you think, should I try to get recruited as a fullback or defensive end/OLB?
by august(my senior year), i'll have good fullback measures. at 6'0 200-210 pounds, but if i'll go as defensive end/rush linebacker i'll be a bit undersized and might get overlooked on. but then again i might get overlooked simply because i play fullback. i have no idea what to do. i'm really good at playing defensive end, and i'm not the greatest fullback but I can defiantly get much better at it...

All of our core lifts were done heavy...but from week to week the numbers changed. One week we will BB bench and then next week we won't, instead did inclines. It's hard to explain but the workouts were always changing

Just play ball and have fun. Stop driving yourself crazy over things you have no control over. Which ever position you play, dominate......some school at the next level will want you. The "undersize" mentality is just that a way of thinking.

sorry for all those questions pitbull.
i didn't play well during my junior year, but i still want to get recruited. to make up for it i'm going to a nike combine on april 14 in dallas, plus i'll attend 2 camps, and to top that over i'll play for the provincial team(you can think of it like state team in high school football - i know there isn't such a thing).
should I send letters to the schools right now, after the combine, after the provincial thing(july), before the regular season, or after the regular season?
i was thinking about sending out letters now, telling them the truth and everything and tell them that i'll send the combine results when i have them, and promise them tape from the provincial team, and after that a tape from the regular season, plus i'll tell them the camps i'll be attending.
but maybe that's not the right decision, and i should contact them after i have the first provincial tape?
i'm just thinking maybe i could land on one of those d1-aa scholarships that someone turned down or never commited.

You can send out letters man. Go to the combine and do your thing. They will take notice and contact your coach about you. Don't worry about your Junior season, it is all about you SR now. There is no need to explain to them that you didn't have a good season. You are overthinking it. HS ball is fun, enjoy the experience. Take your time man, don't stress! You have plenty of time to earn a scholarship. It is March 7, 2010....signing day for you is FEB 2011. Keep working hard and keep your grades up. Things will fall into place.
Ask as many questions that is needed. I am here to help my brother.

as for the grades, i'm studying like crazy, my first semester i've failed 2 courses, luckily they don't count them into my GPA because i didn't get the credit. now i'm sitting on 3.66.

Are steroids as commonly used as the media portrays them to be?
Are there alot of guys who just get through on genetics IE slack in practice, don't lift or lift half-assed ect?
How hard was practice?
Did teachers mark you easy, or just give you high marks just because you played football?
How are walk-ons treated?
I LOVE football but i'm probably not good enough to play Uni. ball. Do you think going back to HS for another semester to play ball and get my marks up is a good idea? Is this popular in the states?
Thanks

I don't know how any times I can answer this question in the same way. Dont worry about junior yr film...they will recruit you this season and watch film on your senior yr. Why would you promise them a tape that doesn't show good footage on you? That doesnt make any sense. Do your think at the combines and this next upcoming season.

Yes they are
Nobody who excels gets by on just genetics. Hardwork pays off, don't be fooled.
Practice was not hard, just another day to get better. Some days are better than others but wouldnt call them hard.
I always did my work because their is life after football no matter how good you are. I can just speak for myself...so the answer would be no.
Walk ons who are not preferred are treated like a joke. Once in a blue someone will catch the coaches eyes but that is rare
I am confused with your last question Go back to HS for a semester to play ball? Schooling doesnt work like that over here.

On the last part, In canada kids can go back to high school until they are 20. They are eligible to play sports for 5 years, so what alot of people do if they: don't get into the school they wanted to, didnt have enough credits to graduate, need a scholarship to be able to go to university/collage, or just love a sport/high school is come back for an extra semester or year.
I'll graduate in a few months but I think my marks are too low to get into the university I wanted. I'm thinking of going back to high school for a semester, taking 2 or 3 courses, and playing football. After that I would work full time for about 8 months than go to university. This would allow me to get a better entrance scholarship, play the sport of my dreams, and save up some money for university.
Thanks again!

You say that walk-ons that are not preferred are treated like a joke. What about preferred walk-ons, how are they treated? That's the position my brother is in right now. He has a few D1 colleges saying he can come to their school as a preferred walk-on. He plays O-line and is 6'3 290 lbs. Should he go to a junior college where he can get a scholarship until he can get a scholarship in D1? Or should he just go to a D1 school and try to earn a scholarship ASAP? He was a stud in high school and was probably the best player to come out of the school ever (we sucked in the past, go to the 5A state championship this year and lost). I feel that he's good enough to get a scholarship in D1, but he is having doubts.

Preferred walk on's are treated okay. They actually get looked at and evaluated like scholly players. But your brother has to ask himself this; why didnt those school offer him a full ride? My advice is to go where you are really wanted. If he feels JC is the best option then he should do it...many have.

I get your logic, but he burned bridges already for his JC and D2 offers (he got offered half at one D2 school). His choice, not mine. I'm just trying to get him prepared to work hard and try to earn a scholarship ASAP, by next spring hopefully. The only thing I can think of why he didn't D1 offers is that he's only 6'3 (measured 6'2 by some schools) and played left tackle in high school. There are a lot of opportunities at guard or center available and if he works hard I think he'll get a scholarship quick.
One more question. He's 6'3 290ish right now. Do you think it would be good for him to try to lose some weight and try to get to 265 to 275 before summer training starts? Also are there any workouts you would recommend an O-lineman to work on? His lifts are pretty solid but he could stand to get faster.

I really cant answer the question about losing weight because I do not know which weight he is most effective at. Not everyone who loses 15-20 pounds improves. They may get faster but may get weaker. It all depends on how he feels and reacts at both weights so this a decision he has to make. But to get quicker he should do a lot of speed and conditioning work just like every other position.

I didnt really market myself at all. I am a bit older than you guys and the whole recruiting game has changed sooooo much. I didnt have the luxury of all these combines, spring camps, the exposure HS gets now is big. I did it the old school way by just playing hard. I guess word of mouth spread and I was fortunate enough to get notice.
Some good strategies for you or someone in HS would be to attend every camp or combine you are able to. Send your film to everywhere...big school, small school....anywhere and everywhere. I say this because I had a teammate who tape went to some small d2 school; long story short the coach felt he was too good and had a buddy who coached at the Univ of Iowa . That coach sent that film to Iowa, Iowa coached called my HS and offered a full ride to my boy and that's where he ended up going to school at.

Pitbull is right. Playing as a sophomore is good for experience and for your own personal growth but college coaches know and appreciate the fact that someone can radically change from sophomore year to senior year and it is not a good source for judging talent. Judging potential, yes, but not necessarily talent.

You are going to struggle but that is expected for anyone playing a new position. Ask as many questions as possible and make sure you put in the extra field work. It all starts with your mentality...if u believe u will fail than u will....if u believe u will succeed then u will. Simple concept but it takes awhile to train your mind like that. Start now....you will be fine

I have a D3 school that's really interested in me since they bookmarked me on this recruiting website and sent me an email for football and wanted me to send in film, SAT scores, ect.
They fulfill my academic needs for Engineering and it's a private school in Ohio (I'm in VA). I'm really interested and want to go through with this, the problem is I was starting Right Tackle/Left Guard for my Junior season on JV. By some odd reason, I got switched to o-line right before the season started, which is disappointing.
How should I go about trying to get a scholarship or something since it's out of state and it's private. I've been working hard this off-season (not going to football conditioning though, the program is awful and I couldn't sacrifice gains like I have before) and my lifts have gone up. I'm starting Wendler's 5/3/1 for Football so I should be getting better at the linebacker/safety position itself. I'm also starting to do a lot of pickup games with ex-Varsity players that started.
I really need to start and get film this season so that I can possibly go through with this college. Any advice on everything lol? From getting the starting position and doing well, am I on track, ect.?

D3 do not offer scholarships.
pickup games???? two hand touch??

Well, dont know if you can answer this... but,
What are the chances living in Australia, that i could get a scholorship? Im 6'7 340 pounds, and 5.3 secs in the 40 yard, (hand tested, P.s. it was tested in december when playing for my state team, i was still hung over and drunk from the christmas party, didn't sleep the night before too). I played gridiron my very first time at the start of last year and completely dominated every defense lineman in the league ( i know it sounds cocky, but there wasn't one time i actually fell on the floor) including Australian gridiron players (not as quality as the states gridiron players, but these guys were around 170+ kg's).
I just only started loving the sport, and even starting training again, coming from a rugby backround, it feels good to get back into shape. I don't know what half these people are talking about, too much politics for me, i just love hitting people and not getting arrested for it.
Am i too old to get a scholorship in the states (21), how would i get my self noticed in the states? What would i have to go thru to make the "big time"? 4 years college or something?
Thanks in advance.

I am confused as hell.
You was playing JV as a junior in HS?
D3 do not offer scholarships.
pickup games???? two hand touch??
you are an OL and you want film playing LB and SS??
What do you mean you couldnt "sacarfice" the gains you had before, being the reason you do not attend your school's conditioning.
What grade are you in now?
Yeah I was tired as crap when I wrote that. It's probably not as clear as it should be.
I'm still a junior in High School and I got tossed onto JV squad as an offensive lineman at the last minute.
I want to switch to either Linebacker/Safety next year since that was always my favorite position and my size is more suited for it. I think this would also be my best shot at playing at the next level instead of O-Line being I am 195lbs.
D3 school has been emailing me a lot (I know it's not that special since they have a mass email) but I'm interested in the school. I figured they must care about me trying out for their team if they bothered to email me to fill out their forms.
Our school conditioning program sucks. I went all of last year and made minimal gains to "be there for the team" and all of that crap. I'm not going this year to do 5/3/1 for Football, speed camps and stuff. My gains have gone up a lot.
Also in my training, I've been playing pickup games with players that graduated last year that started on our Varsity squad, and some 20 year olds that are also great. Yes it is tackle football, full contact.
So I'm preparing for my final season next year (which will be my senior year) and I'm asking for advice on how I would go about impressing colleges I guess. I don't have much football experience, but I'm a hard worker.
I'm deciding which colleges to go to, all that good stuff that you do your Junior year and the ones that I'm interested in, I might want to play football. Most of which are D-1AA schools like ODU, ect.
All in all, I'm asking for help to get better as a Safety and play at the next level. What should I do to communicate with the coaches more often, ect.

Just work hard and play the best you can this season. Don't concern yourself with the recruiting process. Play your Sr yr, do well on your SAT's and then send film out to the schools you are interested in.

Well, dont know if you can answer this... but,
What are the chances living in Australia, that i could get a scholorship? Damn I do not have a clue how you would get notice from Austrailia.

Recruiting will be at the beginning of 2012, it wouldn't be too late to try to send out film right after my Senior season ended would it?

Pitbull is right. Playing as a sophomore is good for experience and for your own personal growth but college coaches know and appreciate the fact that someone can radically change from sophomore year to senior year and it is not a good source for judging talent. Judging potential, yes, but not necessarily talent.
You are exactly right

If you can run anything 4.6 and under you are straight. Don't believe the hype, many people do not run a 4.3 or 4.4

What would be a good HS freshman linebacker size and speed? I am 6 foot 3 200 lb middle linebacker and I ran a official 5.0 at a combine.

Very, very impressive.
14yr old 6'3 200 LB 5.0!
Good stuff kid. Keep training hard, listening to your coaches and perfect your technique. You are way above the avg size and speed for a Frosh in HS. Keep conditioning and working on your speed. The best way to become a better player is to do fieldwork. Live on the field and not the weight room. The future looks bright for you IF you can tackle, make your right reads and play with an attitude. If what I say holds true you will def be a top priority for a Big D1 school...one more thing...GRADES!!!!!! Keep them high and do well on your SAT's when that time comes. It will come fast man, so dont slack.
