What does your daily routine look like now that your not playing professionally or in college?

Just wanted to comment on this. I have no experience in college football what so ever. But the school I am going to now produced an NFL athlete a starting one at that. He comes down for our summer workouts and such and he says the way our coaches yell at us is the same way his coaches in the NFL yell at him. I will also say this. To everyone that has hopes and dreams READ what I am about to write. I lived in Mississippi all my life. Grew up in Kiln, Mississippi home of Brett Favre. I went to Hancock High School and used to see Brett a lot since my grandma was really good friends with his mom. His dad irving was my pee-wee football coach and taught me how to play QB and such haha ironic. Anyways Brett as some of you may not know was not always good. In high school his dad coached him and prefered to run the ball rather than throw. Brett played QB and Safety and he got a scholarship to Southern Miss on a SAFETY scholarship. He was a third string quarterback. Well the first and second string guys got hurt and Brett got his chance and the rest is history. In the NFL he sat the bench in Atlanta until someone in Green Bay basically said man there is a super bowl quarterback sitting on the bench and they brought him to Green Bay and basically the rest is LIVING history haha.
Yeah, we must make the most of our opportunities. The window for success does not stay open very long. My father taught me no matter how much you feel you should be playing or whatever the case may be you always make sure you are ready. When the time comes and you are not then that time may never come again. But if it comes and you are then the sky is the limit example Brett Favre, Tiki Barber, Steve Young and countless others.

Well I just got released not too long ago. I do a lot of traveling back and forth talking to kids in urban neighborhoods. My father's pop warner team was in the championship in FL, so I was down there. Two of my cousins were in bowl games, so I went to those. My training will start Jan 18 with my Athletic Center. Should be fun to see who they are bringing in to get ready for the combine this year.

That's incredible to hear that there were scholarship players on your team who were just flat out not good or didn't care about success.

Yes I would man. Going into college I was a cocky azzhole to sum it up. It was all about me. Things worked out and I was lucky enough to live a childhood dream but during the process I was mean to a lot of people. I should have went to Alabama with coach Shula at the time, but I was sooo worried about being " the man" on my team. Young and dumb, they go hand and hand
Dude i think we were all dumb and cocky going into college, i know i was as well. ACL injuries humbled me a bit early. If i couldve i wouldve picked another school. I didnt know my HC was going to get fired in my sophomore year and the new coach would be a prick who didnt quite agree with my desire to go to med school along with play football. It sucked having to leave a school and transfer to another and spend pretty much 2 years each at two different BCS schools.

That is the SEC for you kid. I played in the most political conference in America. You would be amazed of how many of my teammates who didn't know the difference between a simile and metaphor, the difference between there, they are, their. Basic stuff that my son is learning. But if your old HS coach is the coaches buddy then he will take some kids from that school. I am not even going to get started on the politics of NCAA football in my conference, we will be here all day.

That's one of the big reasons I'm stoked that I got accepted to Wyoming. They've got a reputation for no-nonsense, good-natured, down-to-earth football with very little politics. Just playing the game should be the central idea, and, no offense to anyone out there, but it makes sense that people should have to put academics ahead of football. If you can't make the grade, you shouldn't play till you put the work in.

Great coach ! I met him a few times. Played against him twice, one year he was national champ. His teams then were playing at a different level than the rest of us were. He was an intimidating sob.

I am a pro nba player but im trying to help this kid play college ball. He missed his junior and senior season due to injury. He lives in florida so there are no jc teams around here. He cant afford to move. He plays semi pro ball right now. Would it be allright for him to send a highlight tape of him playibg semi pro. To a collegevlike morehouse or fau. Or will it just be a waste of time.

I am also a former D1 athlete and I just wanted to chime in and say great thread and great advice. Good Luck with your rehab and getting ready for your comeback.
Just wanted to say that college football is like a full time job and you need mental toughness more than anything. The OP is right a lot of guys don't enjoy the football side of college. In my experience you are just a piece of meat to the coaches and they try and make you think they care but at the end of the day they don't. Who can blame them really, they are earning a living for their family and if you screw up then it reflects poorly on them and their job prospects.
In fact the most successful guys on my team were the guys who were best able to shut out all the distractions, yelling, personal attacks and cussing and just focus on perfecting their craft. It's tough, but if you want it bad enough you will find a way.
When choosing a college, if you can, try and look for strength coaches who understand that every athlete and every position is different and take this in to consideration in their programming. Pitt Football is the perfect example, their strength coaches are arguably the best out there.
Be very careful when choosing where to go. I made the wrong decision. Don't fall for how they treat you in the recruiting process cause everything will change once you start classes. Talk to the players as much as you can before signing and make sure they give you a full answer rather than a quick one when you ask a question.
And for those asking about lifting numbers from memory we had a handful of guys squat over 500 during testing, one guy bench over 400, a few just under and one guy hang clean just over 400. Squat average would have been about 440-450 and Bench around 315. Hang Clean I am not sure. In other words, you don't need powerlifter numbers to play football at a high level.
PitbullJR
01-08-2010, 05:20 AM
^^^ Everything you said is correct. When the coach watches film they do not ask how much can you hang clean or squat. They are evaluating you on your on-field performance .

hey whasup, I got a question. I'm playing JUCO ball at the moment. Unfortunately I didn't played my first year in JUCO but i took 12 units and my eligibility clock started. I never knew the rule or anything like that, and I only took 12 units that one semester in school. I have been in a JUCO for 2 years. What do you think my chances are of the NCAA accepting my appeal for eligibility??
Secondly, Ive played safety and ran a 4.58 40 (even though i don't think im that fast, im just explosive... IM also doing track for the first time in my life though). I'm currently 195 and since I can put on weight extremely easily i plan to be 215-220 by season (ive done this before). I feel I have all the physical tools to go somewhere but I want to be the smartest player on the field.
Im going out for Linebacker this season in JUCO, so what are some things to study and make sure I know before the off season even starts?? ive never played linebacker before

The chances of the NCAA accepting your appeal are 0%. They rejected someone a 6th year who had a broken back.
Be fundamentally sound. Do not false step, you have to be able to scrape for side to side, stay low, learn your guard reads and go over the techniques of tackling.

It felt good beating them especially the way they smacked us the yr before. Stevie came through that game. We always have a habit of playing them tough when they come to Lexington, so although it was a big shock to the world...not so much too us.

Well hell, if you are already starting despite being so small that should tell you something. You are probably a true baller. I understand you wanting to get your weight up but during the process just make sure you don't decrease your speed. I played at a SEC school and although I was a big DB, we had some guys who were 170. Just keep working hard man. Being a solid tackler at CB will get you scholarship offers, trust me. Keeping working on your technique and you will be well on your way my brother.
thanks dawg. reppd. but i feel as tho when i gain weight i get faster? idk what it is. but my last forty was around 5.2 so and i feel as though i way faster..so when i run it again im hoping for a 4.8

Ask all the questions you want kid. The best advice I can give you is not to peak in the backfield too much when in man coverage. Keep your eyes on your WR. You will be able to tell if its a run or pass because his steps will be different and he will stalk block you.

I'm not an expert here, obviously, nor am I the man targeted by your question. That said, the best advice I've ever heard on the subject dictates that your well served to focus on your man's core. His eyes, feet, etc, can mislead as per where he's heading. But his core is less likely to do so. The same tip works well for basketball, I think.

A PitbullJR i got a few question to ask.
1. I am plaining to walk-on to a DII school or DIII or junior college. I havent had any football experience in high school. But i wanna try to play CB, do u know any drills i can do to prepare me.
2. I am 5'9 and i weigh around 198 i am not fat or skinny should i try lean out a bit.
3. Should i continue doing vertical jump bible for my plyo training.
4. Right now I am at a four year university (no football program). Anyways I am in my second year and am still completing my General Ed's (due to a switch of major with has set me behind). Anyways should i look at going to juco to walk-on until I finsh my AA or should I just walk-on to a D2 or D3 school.
5. Lastly, if u had to recommend 1 supp what would it be and way.

1. You want the 2nd hardest position in football huh? Do you know anyone who plays football, a friend? It is is very hard to teach someone how to play CB by just showing them drills. It gets very technical. But do back peddle drills, work on staying low, you have to be flexible in your hips.
2. Depends on your speed. If you want to get faster and quicker than maybe you should, if not then stay the weight in which you are comfortable.
3. I do not know too much about the vertical jump bible, so I really can't give you an answer. But if you do feel yourself getting more explosive by using it, than keep on.
4. It really all depends on how many credits you have now and which schools you attend to walk on to. Walking on at Fresno CC is way different than walking on to Hudson CC. Walking on to Pace Univ is different than walking on to Grand Valley State. Tell me the schools you have in mind on each level and I can answer your question a little better.

Would you train speed for a o lineman the same as a wide reciever? What is the difference?
I am 190 lbs 6 foot 4 as a freshman offensive tackle. I set a goal to be 215 by next year before football. I was the only kid to play both ways at a 4000+ kid school. So i know I can play ball. I am juss trying to get bigger, any tips on maintaining size and speed?

Hey, pit
I am a sophomore at a d3 school and have started both years
I did not have any d1 scholarship offers other then the academies (which gives everyone since its military) and Ivy League, which does not offer scholarships
I went to a USA Today top 25 football school for all 4 years and started a few years there
We got a new coach my senior year, who was at the school before that, but he did not give me much press since I was not in the "in" group because I did not party with them
A d1 school, recruiting coordinator/TE coach saw me at a camp and talked to me, and then the offensive run coordinator/OL coach and him saw me at another and wanted to introduce me to the head coach at another camp I was going to
Long story short the head coach did not even talk to me or look at me by saying I am too small to play there (which makes no sense)
Therefore, my question is
Do you think I could transfer to a d1 school and possible start my junior year?
I can give you my stats if you want (last time I said them a few years ago, I was flamed bad since people do not believe me since I do not have a video camera to prove it)
Thanks for the help in advance

I'll answer this for you since I played DE and was successful. You need to learn every move there is in order to be the best you can be, not just one or two. Learn to cut and crawl, bull rush, hold your ground, shed block, fake step, and swim. But more importantly, get stronger and faster. You can know everyone of these moves to their textbook definition but it won't matter if you don't have the power to get them done.

You going be huge man. Just eat and keep training. Make sure your grades are right and keep improving your technique. You will def get a scholarship just on size alone.
To answer your first question, every drill we did the OL did also. In terms of speed and conditioning. When it comes to individual work obviously we do different things, but other than that we all train for speed the same way.

It has happen in the past. The FB Owen Schmitt was at UW-River Waters or some sh!t like that and transferred to West Virginia. It really depends though. How are you doing at the D3 you are at? What position do you play? What D1 school do you plan to transfer to?

Yes I did and during the off-season I was in a track club in HS. Yes I do recommend it.

You are exactly right

Resistance runs. Use the sleds, bands, proper running form, hills up and down. Work on explosion for the first 10 yards. The key to running a good 40 is all technique

I have started every game since I got to the college. They make me play LT since I can block which is a waste since I can also catch. I was all-academic, all-conference, 3rd team all state this year and probably should have gotten more than that. I only allowed one sack all season and over 75% of the rushing touchdowns were run behind me. Latter in the year they were using me as more of a TE someone the time since when we would go unbalanced I would always be the one in the TE position.
I defiantly do not weight enough to play OL in D-1. But I was recruited as a tight end, but also can play DE, and LB.
I am not sure what D-1 school I would go to. The school where the head coach did not want to talk to me went to another d1 school but they have a tight end that is the same grade whose older brother was QB for them a few years ago, so I could not play TE there.

I want to try and transition to being an OLB since I think I'm on the smaller side of it, but what are some goods lifting/speed stats to try and obtain and a good height/weight.
I think I'm done growing at 6'1" though since I've been this height for awhile. Any tips to try and become a better OLB? Stuff that I need to work on? I don't know my 40 since I was timed on it once and I completely forgot the time (it was my freshman year)
I'm an upcoming senior and I've never played the position before (or had much experience at football besides offensive lineman)

Right now I'm 186, I'm going to be bulking up to 195-200.
I'm unsure right now, we just did a 3-5 for the first time but we're getting a new head coach so I really have no clue what we'll do.
Also what's a good 40 to aim for

Like I told many others work on your technique. Do not false step. Work on your guard rules, tackling and pass coverage. Be loose in your hips. Anything under a 4.8 is good for HS

Our head coach is gone and the assistant coaches don't work at the school
And none of the linebacker's actually do anything position specific in the off-season. The one that would do anything does other sports and is just a naturally gifted linebacker.
I've already asked advice from him but he just gave me some traits of linebacker's (which helped) but when I asked anything for the offseason to help for the basics and stuff he didn't know.

Just think it through completely. Sometimes being a big fish in a little pond is better than being a little fish in a big pond. If you are good you will get an opportunity to try-out for the league. Don't get too caught up in the Divisions. I am going tell you a secret. If you are not a ball player from the big money schools which is like 10 of them it don't matter. My teammate led the SEC in receiving yards and TD's and still got drafted in the 7th round. If he would have done that at the "big money" schools, big difference. Just to clarify the 10 schools that really matter are ( Florida, Miami, FSU, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Alabama, Ohio St, Notre Dame and Michigan)

Ya I guess that is true. The NFL would never look at me as a left tackle though. I play super out of position being 6'4'' 250 lbs with under 6% bf and run a sub 4.5 40. I am going to see if I can play jack linebacker next year but I doubt they will let me.

Keep a good diet and train hard. I do a lotttttttttt of running. First thing when you wake up hit the track. It gets your CNS started for the day and that will increase fat loss.

It's up too you. You can keep them at the same and bump of the intensity of your workouts while including the running in the morning or you can cut them slightly, ya feel me? You are going to have to find what works for your body.
I can run 16x100's in the morning with nothing in my stomach but just a caffeine pill. That doesn't work for everybody.

Those are my stats, they are just idiots. They put me at tackle saying that they did not know I could run block as well as I do or that I could pass block to.
I know I cannot play DB of any type because I can only back pedal well for around 10 yards, which is more then I would need to play Jack. The only thing I am not so great at is long distance things. We do incredibly stupid running after practices, they are like gassers, but you do not really ever up sprinting since you run over 10 none stop. I get slower and slower after about 1.5 or 2.
But again, you are never going to run that in one play. I am much better at running say 15 seconds and a 30-second brake.
Game conditioned is what matters right.
Doc do not assume things just because of stats or lack of stats means someone is a fraud or that they necessarily do something. I can read defenses as well or better than all the QB?s I know but it does not mean that I can throw it where I would want.
Stats are a benchmark idea not an exact measurement.
That is also, why I have not said all of mine since they would not be believed.

That long distance has it's purpose man. I am going to tell you how. As a LB, DB, WR,RB, TE and even lineman you are always running. You want to be able to tolerate that lactic acid build up. If a RB just broke a 80 yard TD run and I am chasing him, I better be conditioned. Lets say its a fumble and now I have to defend a WR that runs a 20 yard deep post route. I had better recovered energy wise or I am getting torched. The same goes for OL pulling.

It doesn't matter. If you are fast and can catch some school will want you. The average height is probably around 6ft though. No need to worry about vertical or broad jump until you have a pro day or get an invite to the combine. Being a good route runner is most important, perfect example one of the greatest ever Jerry Rice

Always be explosive and fundamentally sound. When covering the receiver keep your eyes on his mid-section. By doing that you wont fall for his headfakes and shoulder fakes. Make sure you are a good tackler. Being a good tackler will get you a long way.

Thanks for the mid section advice, that was a big flaw of mine last season, and it was hard to recover from.
I am good at tackling thankfully, i played for a pretty slack team last year (1st season) but I started and was picked for captain, I am trying out for a better team this year, with more depth so Id like to be as good as possible before training starts so I can wow the coaches.
What kind of exercises did you find best to increase vertical, as my height is an obstacle sometimes when trying to intercept a pass!

I really didn't focus on my vertical but I did a lot of bunny hops, single leg hops and explosive jumps over hurdles. I also did resist band squat jumps. I did these exercises for explosion but that would help in one's vertical obviously.

Hey, it's me again. This is probably a long shot, especially since you didn't go to this school, but I figured that I'd ask anyways.
Basically, I'm going to the University of Wyoming. I follow their football team a lot, and I really love what Dave Christensen has done - the offensive schemes and his technique has really made UW look like a good team, or at least not as mediocre as they have been in the past few years. But he's also just entering his second year as head coach, so I need new, updated info on how he runs the place, not on Wyoming's reputation as a welcoming walk on school, so I thought I'd ask you. I know that you probably don't know Coach Christensen well if at all, but do you know if newer coaches tend to a) stick to their guns and established players or b) take risks with newer players to try and build their team around themselves?
Thanks.

Right. However, the recovery is more of the ATP + CP pathways and not aerobic metabolism since ATP + CP metabolism lasts 10-45 seconds.
That is why I see football conditioned as being able to exercise an aerobically and go into a short oxygen debt during the play, and then quickly get out of oxygen debt and back to aerobic metabolism between the plays.
I could not very even close run even a half marathon, but I can run 40s with a 15-second break for as long as needed.
I cannot run long distance well like miles. We had to run a 2 mile test once, the first mile was somewhere between around 6 minutes, but the next mile was 8. I cannot keep the tempo.

Focus on all three. I can't answer how great of shape you will be in because I don't know your fitness level, conditioning routine or work ethic. Are you from Maryland? You are def a ball player man. I like your aggressiveness, you play coming down hill, seem to shed blockers good for your size, tackles well and you scrape good. It is hard to make a accurate judgement from a highlight tape because everyone looks good in a Highlight tape but you are def a player.

They shouldn't but people who tackle legs have a tendacy of putting their head down. Naturally when you tackle you aim to put your head across their body but in reality you are going to go lower just due to physics. But when you aim at their legs you are going to go even lower risking the chance to miss that tackle. Hope I explained that well enough for you

What grade level are you in? Which schools are recruiting you?
I am from maryland. im a junior this year. its my junior highlight tape
i havent really talked to any schools yet.... our coaches dont help us recruit and i just got this video today... (I had a friend make it)
what do you think i should i do recruiting wise?

Did most of them back to back. I usually ran 4x a week and attempted to lift 4x but it usually ended up 3x with that friday being the night me and my brothers would go out and party. With that being said, I never missed a running work-out.

I will coach HS ball and a good buddy of mine is the director of a strength and performance center in Boston. Some days yes but that was due to frustration and anger. I have been playing ball since 8 yrs old and when it comes down to it I would never stop unless I have nomore to give.
But to touch on my first point, coaching up kids on life skills and on the game of football would bring me just as much satisfaction as me playing in the NFL. I would love to see kids who I have coach do their thing on Saturday nights whether that is D1, D1AA,D2,D3. I also want to get my son and nephews ready to play ball or whatever they decide to do. Helping others succeed is what life's about in my opinion.

Come to think of it, how did it affect your training? Surely you lost a tonne of strength/fitness from not being able to work your legs?

I messed up by knee by jumping to defend a pass while in practice in the NFL. It affected my training big time because after the surgery by ACL healed quicker than my LCL. While coming back, I damaged more tissue on my LCL ligament. That is still healing now. The size of my injured legs is coming back. I will attach a pic of how it looked when I tore it.

Coaching is extremely rewarding. I've been doing it for over 5 years now and it is the best thing that I have ever done. Just so you know where I have been, I was a guard for an SEC team way back when. Had a future according to coaches. I was in a car crash after my sophomore year, lost my girl and my best friend, and my playing career. I spent months in and out of hospitals and rehab centers. My career was finished and I lost my scholarship. I turned away from football and found myself in a bottle for 20 years. The good Lord and some good friends helped me back, got me back to school for my teaching degree and hooked me up with an old friend who was coaching HS. I worked as his assistant for a couple of years and then he retired and I've been head man for 3 years now. Working with these kids for the past 5 years has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. Often the kids and their parents will thank me but I quietly laugh. They have no idea what they have done for me.
Sorry for the sappy email but I've been through hell and back. You seem like a good guy and sound like someone who would make a great coach. I urge you to follow it. Kids need people like you.

Heading up to my senior year I'm deciding I don't want to be a linemen anymore. Three years of starting center is getting very, very old. I'm planning on trying out to become my teams fullback/halfback. Regarding weightlifting I've been lifting Mon/Wed/Fri. I squat/boxsquat everyday and switch between bench/military and deadlift/cleans with a few other lifts (dips, rows, core work, curls). Is there a better regimen you could suggest for me. Also, could you recommend me conditioning and speed training exercises? I'm limited to a field with grass to run on with a couple lines drawn on it. Thank you and good luck coaching.

Hey Pitbull,
I am a freshman at a D3 college and I play football and run track. IN football I play receiver. The thing is that I am 5'9 and around 150 pounds. I'm pretty quick and fast and run solid routes sometimes. My biggest problem is getting jammed at the line. Over the course of the season I got better at getting away from the press by double moves at the line and stutter steps. But, I was wondering what would most receivers would do when you pressed them to get awat from your press or what would you advice me to do to get away from the press almost everytime and how can I practice on my own to work on beating the press. Thanks

Hey man, got a question.
After I lift I get crazy pumps, and my whole body feels more solid and strong. But when I first wake up on gamedays the pump is gone. I stop lifting on Thursday because I have games on Sunday and I don't want to be sore or weak, so my muscles are fresh, but I have no pump at all and get so damn skinny. It doesn't help that I usually only have time for one meal before games, and my weight is usually down between 2-5 pounds no matter how much I eat the night before. I'm curious: do you do anything to get your muscles pumped up and thick on gameday?
I was thinking about maybe doing some light cleans, squats, benches and deads in the morning just to get the blood flowing but I don't want to pre-exhaust myself before I play. BTW I'm a rugby player, but my position (lock) is similar in terms of athletic requirements to a DE

Owh and Is there any chance a 20 year old is able to get an INTERNATIONAL scholarship to play in the states as a wide receiver and how do i go about this(I live in the Netherlands)? This guy on my team who was 21 went to the states last year to a div2 college with a full scholarship (and it turns out div2 is to easy for him). Last year was my first year playing football in competition (injury and my dad wanting to start his own team prevented me from before) and i got a lot of coaches, players and old-players telling me i should go to the states (the level of play here is really low).
Also i haven't started lifting for long so i'm probably not able to impress them with lifting stats is this big on those coaches?
TL;DR: am i to late?

Hey bro there are basically 3 things that I always used to help get off the line..
1.) simple head fake, where you move your head to one side while you get your body moving straight or to the other side. You can also use a shoulder fake to mix things up.
2.) you can rip him, where if you're cutting left, use your right arm and "rip" up through the corner's arms. It always works well for me!
3.)another simple technique is the swim, where you bring your inside arm up & over the corner's arms so you can knock them downward.
But the main thing is mix it up! You cant do the same thing every time cause a good corner will learn ur tendencies, so mix em up!
In the weight room I did a few exercises that helped develop my explosive movement in my arms and body similar to the DE movements! It helped be able to power through the corner at some times! One is called the rip and press! I did a dumb bell version its hard and very effective!
If ya need anything else let me know bro!

i played fullback in the game that i had to be 44 in. I hate playing both sides of the ball because i feel im not as sharp on D. but we dont have much depth on my squad so i do it anyway and play special teams... im also a long snapper
have colleges had a chance to contact you?
any letters i may have gotten my coaches havent given to me so im starting the process of contacting them
im looking d1aa and ivy league type schools... i have pretty good grades. 4.78 weighted and i think like 3.76 unweighted
EDIT: i also like your music choice in the tape... some people act really hardcore with lots of rap and stuff but they actually are not like that at all... thats why i was glad the music in my tape was just random drums and stuff

Hey, few questions, not neccessarily related to football persay, but more geared towards university/elite atheltics
1-If you had to list the top 3 things that players competing for a starting position demonstrate/should do to stand out and above what would they be?(I know you're not a coach but you've obviously been around the game along time)
2-Not sure if you are able to answer this one; if you can picture the players you know that made the biggest improvement from their 1st year-4/5th year in college and now have a chance at making it to the next level, what are the biggest areas they improved in?(whether it be a mental aspect, physical, technique, etc)
Thanks for the thread, even though I dont play football, still cool stuff

1. Be able to follow directions, be a team player. do everything asked of him at 100%
2. It would be their technique and approach to the game, which falls under the mental category.

No problem man. I am all about helping others. In college they were fairly simple. They consisted of agility drills, 110x sprints, sled pulls...the usual. They lasted about 2 hours. The hard running was done with my brothers and cousins when we train due to the fact their were only 4 or 5 of us as oppose to 60.

any letters i may have gotten my coaches havent given to me so im starting the process of contacting them
im looking d1aa and ivy league type schools... i have pretty good grades. 4.78 weighted and i think like 3.76 unweighted
EDIT: i also like your music choice in the tape... some people act really hardcore with lots of rap and stuff but they actually are not like that at all... thats why i was glad the music in my tape was just random drums and stuff
I'm a senior, last year i started 2 games at guard, but this year my coach let me concentrate soley on defence.
I've had a couple schools from our state contact me, Humbolt state, USD, Azuza pacific, Cal luthern, Chatmen. all but USD are d2 schools.
haha and i think the rock type music gives it different taste

Hey Pitbull,
This is my current situation i am currently 6'1 205lbs and totally out of shape in my eyes and need a little advice concerning football. Last time i played football was when i was a sophomore in HS. I started playing when i was 8 and always started and never missed a game, made it to all stars every year etc... My goal is to transfer from the community college i am currently attending to a school with a d2 football team or attend Uconn and do a walk on, I want to bulk up to at least a healthy 240/250 (Ive gone from 310lbs to 205lbs in a year 1/2 ive always been a big boy and know my body can sit at 250 easy)
.... Positions i played were Fullback / Middle Linebacker.
I am starting from rock bottom and want to be ready by August if possible.

Hi im a Freshman Inside Linebacker. I've been playing football for 7 years. I wasn't great last year but im working really hard to improve over the offseason. Im at the Weightroom everyday it's open and im the last one to leave. I Also have a membership to World's Gym.
Im 5'5/5'6 122 LBS im working on improving my size but heres my weights what should I improve on?
1RM:
Bench-140
Squat-170
Leg Press-378
IDK how much my 1RM is but I usually do 3 sets and 10 Reps of
Dumbell Rows - 35
Dumbell Press- 40
I suprise coaches with how hard I hit for my size and can stay with alot of lineman strait up even though i'm one of the smaller kids on the team
What do I need to work on?

Most likely going to be going for Fullback ..... How would you go about trying to gain 40lbs healthy. What protein shake should i invest in, foods, and what workouts would most benefit me besides running. I have no clue were to start sadly.

Heres my situation,
Im a freshman at USF (south florida), I played 1 year of freshman football (although I didnt play much because I lacked experience), I wrestled for all 4 years and made it to the top 8 at states my senior year. Question is, a friend of mine is on the team here and hes told me that football tryouts are february 4th or around that, what chances do I have of making it? I weigh about 6'4" and about 280, im moderately strong (cant bench my bodyweight though :/, and i havent done a truely heavy squat in a while, so needless to say, my lifts are far from spectacular). I know I know, I have no chance right? But i do have heart, if that counts for everything. I was always told Id never be good at wrestling, but i made myself better and stuck it out with top ranked kids, so im hoping that same thing can carry me through with this. What do you think? Id love to play football for the Bulls and I think i could be good at it, but it just wasnt my thing in high school. Ive been lifting since the end of wrestling season, feb 09, but it hasnt been consistent due to starting college over summer, i have about 2 weeks, i know short notice, to do whatever it takes to make sure im at my best to show the coaches what im made of. What do you suggest? (sorry, i think there may be like 3 or 4 questions in this post) Thanks in advance for any help you give.

you have the same backward stutter step as i do lol. nice film.
i'm heading to either a d1aa or d2 school. my size is what hurts me since i'm only 5'10 playing linebacker.
n2di_euuap8
Spent a few minutes looking at the tape although it is really hard to judge a highlight tape, full films are much better. anyway.
Positives- plays game very hard, does not seem to take plays off. Sure Tackler, good technique, drops hips well and explodes into contact. Plays downhill fast, not sure if thats because many of the plays are blitzes. Wouldve like to see more of read/react situations. Speed seems to be average, quickness would be possible slightly above average.
Negatives- Overagressive at times which will put you out of position at the college level. Look to be stiff when dropping and backpedealing. Was coverage a weakness of yours since i didnt see an plays in coverage on the highlight and with lack of fluidity in space.
that was just a quick break down, if i can get some time ill watch it two or three more times and really give a break down if youd like.

ive decided i wanna put my training into getting as quick and explosive as possible for the potential of playing DE.
Specifically, i wanna focuse of having that quick first step, and quick hands.
Any Drills to focus on?
ive been jumproping. agility ladder, bag drills, cone drills, anything else i can do?

What position in particualr you want to play? Are you familiar with the shuttle runs, 40 yrd test, broad jump, 3 cone drill, 8 cone drill, different names of schemes? I just want to know where are you at in familarity with the sport

I didnt really want to wrestle in college, although i got offers from a few schools. When i got to USF last summer people, and employees, here kept asking if i played football, when i said no, they told me i should because im big enough. I know theyre not experts or scouting recruiters or anything but its happened enough times to where i started to consider that i might be able to play.
Im interested in playing D-tackle or O-tackle, i was an O-guard/d-tackle freshman year and a few times throughout my HS career because i would go out for spring football but i couldnt stick with it because of wrestling.
And ive run a 40 before, and done some agility things when i was doing spring football. I guess im moderately familiar with the sport. I mean, i dont know a whole lot, but im good at pushing people around from wrestling haha.I want to be a part of something bigger than me, and ive noticed a few guys ive wrestled that are on the football team here. Im going to try out regardless, but i just wanted to see what your opinion/views were on my situation. Thanks.
Edit: and i guess the reason that football wasnt my thing in HS was because of the coaching staff. i did all the workouts and summer practices after 8th grade leading up to 9th and was the starting O-guard for the freshman team, well the first week of school a kid decides to join the team and he gets my spot although i did all the work and stuff prior to the season. but when wrestling season came around i was given an equal opportunity and got to participate and wrestle and i liked that better than benchwarming all the time in football. but since id rather play football than wrestle in the club here, i understand that ill probably be benchwarming for a few years, im ok with that. i just want to use my abilities for a positive function for the school, and football is way more productive than club wrestling haha.

I am forunate enough to be on scholarship at a Division 1 schol with 3 years remaining of elgibility. I am a 6'3 255 pound defensive end who is pretty strong (395 for 6 box squat 1 inch below parallel, a 320 hang clean, and benching near 360) and athletic (32 inch vertical and an okay 40 at 4.88 but a good shuttle around 4.4 seconds). I want to train this summer to put myself in position to make the NFL.
I have already got in contact with Defranco's which is the biggest one that came to mind and they said they'd love to have me(for around 100 dollers a week for 6 times a week) . However, i wanted to see what are some other top notch athletic training facilities you guys have heard of? Basically given the chance to train anywhere, where would you train?

Here's my situation
I was planning on playing at a D3 school in wisconsin, as a LB or a FB...(leaning towards FB)
But when camp came around I chickened out and quit...I wasnt sure of my ability...and I'm not scared to take a hit, but I just wasnt sure how much more intense it would be than small d5 hs football in wisconsin...so i quit, and i feel like its the worst mistake ive made...so my question is how did you get all the bull**** outta your mind and just play ball like you know you can?
Also I'm finding trouble being motivated...I want to get back into football shape...
Current-
Weight:195
Height: 6'0
Lifts: I have no idea I haven't lifted in a long time
Speed and agility: have gone up I feel because Ive been playin alot of basketball +2 hours daily
Goals
Weight:215
Height:6'0
Bench: 225x5
Squat:405x1
Deadlift:450x1
Clean:235x3
40:4.7
So what can I do to get my self motivated...its been a while and im hungry to take and deliver a hit...that should be enough...but i just need to get over a hump...
Thanks

The key to self motivation is the word SELF. Nobody on this board can say anything to get you motivated. Either you want to do it or you don't. Dig down deep in your soul and make a decision on what you want to do. The thing about quitting is that once it's done 1 time it gets easier to do again.
To answer your first question, I get the BS out of my mind and just play by training hard and praying. I try give myself the best opportunity to be successful. With that being said, whatever happens just happens.

Is there any chance a 20 year old is able to get an INTERNATIONAL scholarship to play in the states as a wide receiver and how do i go about this(I live in the Netherlands)? This guy on my team who was 21 went to the states last year to a div2 college with a full scholarship (and it turns out div2 is to easy for him). Last year was my first year playing football in competition (injury and my dad wanting to start his own team prevented me from before) and i got a lot of coaches, players and old-players telling me i should go to the states (the level of play here is quite low).
Also i haven't started lifting for long so i'm probably not able to impress them with lifting stats is this big on those coaches?
TL;DR: am i to late/old now?
No thoughts on this?
And did you know any guys who played div1-2 college who weren't from the States?

I've never played on a football team. I grew up in a country where NO ONE plays football. I've been a track athlete (400/800) and a soccer player throughout high school.
I would really like to play in college, most likely for a d3 team. The positions I have in mind are either kick return or running back.
I'm 5'7" but still growing a bit, so I'm looking at 5'8/9" by the time I'm 20 which is when I'll go to college. I've got quick legs and turn fast, or so i think as compared to the rest of my peers.
What kind of weight would I be looking at to be effective? I've looked at some stats of d3 players at this height and they're in the 175-190 range. Would it be possible to be lighter (160ish) and still be effective? Or would you just get tossed around regardless of how quick/fast you are?
And would you have any tips for a new player trying to get into football? The kind of things to expect, etc etc. I have 2 years before college, so I'd like to prepare myself to give me the best possible opportunity to make it onto the team.
Thanks

Weight is not that important, your main focus should be on speed. Learn the game of football; watch it on tv, go to some games, talk to people who have played

Add in side raises, front raises, shrugs, lat raises. Work your shoulders and that rotator cuff, it gets overlooked in football training and most injuries are the nagging shoulder ones. Anything from 3x, 5-10 reps is sufficient. Just log your workouts and increase weight properly.

first of all, this is an amazing thing you are doing pitbull. i only wish you had made this earlier when i was still in high school.
but anyways, i recently just made one of the toughest decisions of my life. this past fall, i played my freshman season at a division 3 school. i earned a starting spot as a corner, and i am confident in saying that i had a decent season. i love football with all my heart, but the school i was going to was one of the worst experiences of my life. i was truly miserable. i made the decision to go home after the fall semester and attend community college back at home for the spring semester, and i plan on trying to move up a division and play at a d2 or d1-aa school in the fall.
my former coaches were aware of the decision i made and i think i left the team the right way and am still in good standings with the coaches. i have read the ncaa transfer guide to the point where i have memorized the punctuations. i am in the process of putting together a highlight film from my freshman season, but how should i go about contacting coaches at new schools? i was never good at this back in high school.
i know i may be extremely undersized, but the one thing i know i have is heart. i dont think i am going to try to play corner anymore. i want to try playing receiver in college. i run great routes, good hands, and i am definitely not afraid to go across the middle. im just worried that i will be overlooked by coaches anywhere higher then d3 because i am so short. i give everything i have on the field and in the weightroom. i know i have the speed and quickness, and i live in the gym.
i dont think i have ever been under this much stress before in my life.

Thanks man, and do you have any sets/reps recommendations to do for squats and benching exercises?

First, just relax. Don't put added pressure on yourself. Imagine when you get 30 or 40 and your teenage son is doing some stupid sh!t and you knowwwwww he is going to get in trouble, but he still doesn't listen. My point is that there are going to be times in life where you are going to be veryyyyyy stress, don't start the process sooner than it has to be.
Now in regards to playing ball, which schools do you want to go 2? Once you get that list narrowed down, just call the coaches and say that you are interested in transferring. Some schools will react different that is why I asked which schools are you looking at. When talking to them they may ask for film, so send it if you want...if you feel more comfortable just showing them on the field than do that. Keep in mind everything I said depends on the d2 and d1aa schools you have in mind. Walking onto Richmond Univ is much different than walking on to Valparaiso Univ. Once I know the schools you are talking about I amy be able to give a more detailed answer. But relax, things will work out man.

well the main school i have in mind in west georgia. i have a friend that is going to school there, and he tells me nothing but great things about the school. i have also considered jacksonville university because it is closer to home. i have a small list of division 2 programs in the southeast region so i can be closer to home. i was living in new york, and as much as i loved the city it was too cold and too far from home.

I play D-line, and was wondering what the stats were for the guys on your team
I'm 190 right now because of wrestling, but I was 210 in the football season and want to get up to 225-230ish next year. I was wondering if 260-280lb is big enough for D-line
Also I run a 4.9, what do you think the average d=line for your team is?

Thanks, I'm trying to play Safety for my high school. I'm going to be a senior next year in High School. I've always wanted to play football but basketball was in the way and I don't play organized basketball anymore. Dennis,
I had the opportunity to view your DVD. Although you are a good solid player you will need to be much bigger to play football in our league. Most of the OL you will play against in our league weigh 250 lb. and more. You are welcome to be on our team.
Right now im 188lbs, I wanna be around 215 by the time I play football, but i do not want to sacrifice any speed. Also im afriad (since i used to be FAT) to try and bulk because im scared that Ill get fat.

Congrats dennis. Go on a clean bulk, lots of chicken, lean ground beef. Think about it, you could probably eat an extra 2000 cals of chicken ontop of what your doing now would you gain much fat? Most likely not since all the cals are comming from protein. Thats just a theory though I have no backing but its pretty logical.

Eat just a little bit over maintaince.. like just a few hundred, or even at maintainence. And continue on getting stronger and faster

i didn't read your previous posts but since that coach told you that you're competing against other offensive linemen i'm assuming you're playing d-line, and most likely defensive end. i think that eating "just a little over maintaince" ain't gonna cut it for ya.
showing up at 200 wouldn't have the same impact as showing up at 220 or 230, just saying.

We had some big boys, my main ventrell was in the 300's, Pryor was in the 300's. 260-280 is big enough depending on what level of school you go too. That size will work mainly in mid to lower level 1aa and d2. But in all honestly size is not everything so if you can ball and are fast, you will be in the rotation

That's the route to go. The reason why I am so big on speed because once you reach a certain strength level than what is the point? Okay you bench 325, squat 450, DL 500 etc....How much stronger are you going to get and how much more muscle mass are you going to build. With speed you can always get quicker and faster. I will admit the faster you are the faster it's harder to get but the average ball player is not that fast. By you being fast you give yourself a edge.
I have also witness a trend with a lot of younger athletes which consist of all weight room workouts. I kid you not, My dad use to have myself and my brothers & cousins doing drills for hours. I didn't touch a weight until I got to college. I was always naturally strong and should have been lifting in HS but I got better by being on the field. It seems like this aspect of training is getting neglected or not done as much as its suppose too. If someone would ask me would you rather lift or run, I will choose to run. The game is played on the field and not in the weight room. Just take a look at the top athletes in some sports and you will see a common trend: I think it would be more beneficial to run sprints, bunny hops, perfecting your first step, back pedaling, working technique than hitting the weight room. But as I stated first, you should have a solid strength base.

Bruh on some serious sh!t I can't answer that. A lot of people are the same exact size as Wes Walker and don't play professional football. Size has nothing to do with it. I do not know your speed level, athleticism, knowledge of the game etc.... I played DB and I was 205-215...Many more things come into play other than size

Vertical Jump Bible? Do bunny hops, one leg hops, jump over hurdells, medicine ball tosses. Why are you concern so much about your vertical? The only time it matters is during combine time and pro day.

I'm 5'9, 185 pounds and I can only bench 125 on each side, if it fully touches the chest. If It's only a couple of inches off of my chest I can do 130. Regardless, I'm embarrassed as hell and I want to be able to bench more and I'm not sure what can help me aside from working out more or how embarrassed I should be.

Hey i was wondering what the biggest transition between high school and college is?
i mean of course ability of the players because every team is filled with good players unlike a lot of high school teams. my guess would be the speed of the game which is unfortunate for me because while im not slow it is not one of my strengths
also how much improvement did you see your freshman year weight room wise? i mean im very strong for my school but not as much in comparison to some other high schools out there and certainly not in college. it seems like freshman year it would be so hard to be good because everyone else has trained together and had a weight lifting coach. another thing is when did you go to that college freshman year? since football is a fall sport i assume you went in the summer sometime before the other students

Question for you, I walked on to my school team 3 weeks ago. I have been getting positive feedback from the coaches almost everyday, they all say I'm doing good things and I have a lot of ability, and that they are impressed. However I started out at Rush DE, then they moved me to TE, now they are talking about H-Back or maybe Rush DE again, they said that I shouldnt feel pressured to play Tight End, and to just do my thing and they will put me where I can see the field. My question is from your experience in college, if they changed your position is it a good thing? I feel like I've had to go back to square one 3 times, and just today they said that I was in their offense's TE/H-Back role, which they dont even run an H-Back that I know of.

Answer this for me first; What is your gut feeling telling you? Do you think they are being honest or are they giving you the run a around until the freshmens come in the summer. How do you feel? Once you answer this I can better help.

I have seen people get their positions switched plenty of times and they were getting jerked around. Just keeping working hard and be open to anything, but i understand your frustration. Keep me updated when you put the pads on.

Hey pitbull i just want to start by thanking you for taking time and answering all of our questions. Im sure it can get annoying after all of us ask pretty much around the same thing. My question is Ill be attending my first semester starting this month coming up at my local JR college. Now im not ready psychically for football and by that i mean i have no injuries its just that i got big headed and wanted to bulk up ALOT in a short period of time and just wanted to get bigger strong faster than everyone else. I can be honest and say that it all back fired on me and for some reason it never hit me but i gainged alot of bodyfat and hardly ANY muscle just maybe a few pounds thats it. In the end i got up to around 30% bodyfat I got some help and droped my bodyfat with a bodybuilding like diet and its now 14.2% Sooo im almost there. My goal is to get around 6% and then do a nice clean EDUCATED bulk now that i know how to eat and train properly I can do this in NO time at all im sure of it. So basically i wont be ready psychically for a few months then i know i can be unstopable. So should not start school this semester and wait this semester out and focus improving in every single way possible eat sleep and dream football eating right and lifting weights focus on getting faster. I know if i go back to school now i wont be able to dedicated myself completly to gaining my weight and improving well im just not to sure what to do would appreciate some help thanks man By the way my age is 20 not 24. I played safety and running back in high school and am looking to play running back for college. Currently im 6ft 180 but the weight has been coming back quickly. I was thinking of playing for the two years while I get my credits out of the way and then doing a trasnfer to a d2/d1 school. Would big schools still be interested in a 24-25 year old that would be playing as a junior? Also I am feeling good but know that I still need a bit more time before I can be a solid player again and with try outs coming up I was considering talking to the coach about being a red shirt so I could get back into the practice routine but still be able to show 2 good years of competitive play. Would that make sense? Sorry about the long post and thanks for any help.

Yes coaches will be interested in a player 24-25. We had a player 27, if you are good they don't care. The hell with a redshirt, play balll...thats the only way you are goin to get better and be seen. Why prolong your career even more??? no reason son
In college were you cool with the other athletes? What about regular students? I feel like most of my team only hangs out with each other or some of the other sports but not the regular students...except for girls ha!

Thanks for the reply. I was considering red shirt so that I could post some impressive footage for 2 solid years of play instead of mostly focusing on my soph year. Makes sense though. I should really only need 1 good season to give schools a look at the type of player I am.
