i'm not huge on my rifles, but i was under the impression the mod 70s were nice rifles, and that the cartridge is a pretty solid performer.
of course, i'm sure steak and creature will be in shortly and will tell you more than anybody should know bout it

it's pretty much brand new and he had only used it a couple times
he is getting to that age where he cant really handle that much gun anymore so he passed it on to me :)

I'm guessing at the appraised price and caliber (264 winmag was a more popular round in the 50s and 60s) that your rifle is a pre-64 winchester 70, which are the holy grails of Winchester Model 70s since quality on the win70s dropped after 64 and didnt quite recover until the 90s when FN Herstal acquired Winchester.
If I were you I'd ask to see if your fil still has the original wood stock.
That gun is very good, pre-64 Winchester 70s have Mauser claw extractors which are probably the most reliable bolt feeding mechanism (the bolt actaully grips the bullet instead of just pushing in the round) and it should be fairly accurate, I'd check to see if it's free floated by sliding a dollar bill down the barrel.
Rifle also has a 3 position safety so if you put the safety to the middle setting you can cycle the bolt while the safety is on.
The Win 70 trigger is user-friendly enough to where you can adjust the trigger pull by just reading an online guide, not sure what your trigger pull is at right now.
Leupold scope is decent glass too, so you're pretty much set.
Only downside is I'm not sure where you could locally get ammo, 264 mag is pretty rare around where I live.
I had a post-64 Winchester Model 70 Black Shadow in .270 winchester about a year ago, it was a decent rifle for what I paid.

very nice rifle! but as said before, finding ammo of that caliber may be tough. even if u do find ammo there probably wont be much variety in the loads. its more of a reloaders cartridge. but overall its a great rifle with plenty of knockdown for hog to elk sized game

Very nice rifle and a good score for a present. I would go larger for elk but being in Texas you're probably not going to get a lot of chances at elk anyway, great caliber for Texas game. I'm a huge fan of the Win 70's.

Nice, nice rifle. I assume it's a pre-64?
Known as "the rifleman's rifle"
I agree though see if you can get an original stock.
But yeah that is a fantastic Christmas present dude!
Just invest in a nice safe for it and keep it in the family, and take care of it (and shoot it!)
