My question is regarding technique for shurgs
I've heard from a young age that it is bad to do a rotating shrug from front to back b/c it may injure your rotator cuff.
When doing regular up and down reps, is it better for my shoulders to be back, like im standing at attention, or should I have them rolled forward, like I'm slightly slouching?
Thanks

Straight up and down. No need to make it any more complicated than that.

I would not spend a whole lot of time focusing on shrugs, but if you do choose to do them then strait up and down is the way to go.

I only roll back if the weight is light enough... heavy I don't risk it. Straight up and down works... sometimes I alternate grip. Sometimes narrow, sometimes wide. I hit my traps good doing it with my hands nearly touching.

Thanks for all the replys, but my main question was whether or not it's better to be standing at attention, with shoulders back, when doing shrugs or to have shoulders rolled forward, like I'm slightly slouching?
Are they both ok to do and just work different parts of the muscles?? I usually roll my shoulder a little forward and just wanted to get some advice/tips on shoulder position when doing them.
Thanks again for the replies!

whenever I do them straight up and down I hit my junk. How do I counter this?

I just stand normal... and lift my shoulders up as close to my ears as possible...
I agree with the folks saying don't complicate something easy. Just shrug it.

I find having the shoulders a little forward works the best.

if your able to control where your relaxed shoulders are, your not doing enough weight. Just simply let the weight take your shoulders down naturally then shrug it back up. Don't over think proly the simplest move in weight lifting.
