I want to get this thread started for the people I know how have already said would like to do a challenge. We'd like to do a challenge for transforming our bodies for 2010. We'd like to do 12-16 weeks and see how we end up. Using this thread to post pictures, updates, and to motivate each other. Trying to keep each other on track. Using this thread to help push ourselves and the others in the challenge to achieve the goals we set. So who's all in?

I fractued my wrist a couple of weeks ago, but I'm in.

Wow, that couldn't have felt good. I hope that heals well for you! Glad to have ya though! You bring a lot of great knowledge with you and fantastic motivation.

Subbed!

:) Again, I am not great at knowing my way around the forums. Wouldn't know how to do that or who to talk to.

----------------------------------------------------------

Glad to see the interest! Some of us want to do starting pictures. I know not everyone will want to do that. It isn't easy to post pictures if you don't feel great about where you are currently at. If you get a chance take a look at my start pictures last year. That was VERY hard to put up. It felt terrible, but I am so very glad I did. I was able to measure my progress this way. Not to mention all the motivation I get when looking back from then to now.

I am personally going to do one holding a newspaper of the day I start just for me. I want to do a side shot, a front shot of the ab and thigh area, a most muscular or (crab) pose, and a back shot. I may do a few others to just play around with, but you get the idea. I'm going to do weekly weigh-ins and measurements. I am going to do pictures every 3-4 weeks to show progress. I really believe the pictures are key. Even if you personally can't see your progress others most likely will. They can give honest feedback. So you can see that yes, you did have progress on this spot or what have you.

I kept myself very positive last year in what I wrote. I hope this year in this thread everyone will do the same. Not asking anyone to lie, but to give positive feedback on changes.

Again, I'm excited about all the people who said they were in so far. Welcome and let's break down the door of the New Year and show who's boss :D

I am in. I have already started on a fat loss phase even though my next competition is in 6-7 months so i can be 10 % when I start my three month contest prep. I am in no way doing strict contest preparation just taking small steps am 243 right now and the goal until Jan 9th is to lose an inch on the waist and gain 0.25 of an inch of the arms.

after this Ill access my next short term goal.

each small goal adds up ..before this is was to get really strong, beat my logbook everytime.. before that is was to gain 5 lbs of muscle in six weeks..I think this is what keeps me going to achieve my small goals and in a years time I look back at my pictures, strength levels, and overall progress and think...I see a difference

yeah I am happy to share what I know and help people out and learn some stuff.

one thing is cycle the intensity and reps - going heavy all the time balls out results in an injury..as much as I like to go heavy, and it builds the most muscle, taking a 4 week break after a heavy lower rep 6-8 training phase, and doing 10-12 reps at failure gives the joints a nice break. When you come back you can push harder rather than be wore out.

best rep ranges in my opinion for building mass
upper body 6-8
lower- 10-15

*Note*I get most of my information from other people..Dorian Yates, Dante Trudel,
Joe Weider training principals

As for dates and that... Let's have a start date of no later than Jan 14. That way each person is starting relatively at the same time. So I'd say anyone who wants to start ASAP or by Jan 14th. Jan is probably better for most though. The holidays can be rough for most to stay strong :)

Once I get my diet worked out and come up get some of my workout strategy figured out I will post my start date. My end date is going to be March 28th.

As things go along I will post about any supplements I have chosen to use. Give a fair assessment as to whether it seems to be working for me personally or not.

I'm in. I already started 3 weeks ago but I have to take a break because I messed up my hips. I started at 5.5% bodyfat and 148lbs, now I'm at 4.5% bodyfat and 155lbs. Apparently I can't post a picture because I don't have 30 posts so I'll work on it and do it as soon as I can.

So here we go with my plan or commitment if you will.

Start date will be January 1st, at this stage 12 weeks is the plan so finish date going to be March 27th. May go further ,but lets stick with12 for now.

Will post up all measurements on the 1st and weight etc. Also no matter how bad need to put up some pics as per Pack's previous post. Will be working on a routine plan of 4 weight sessions per weekand needing I'm speculating at least 6-7 cardio a week.

Weekly updates to follow with relevant info, gains/losses whatever comes. Want to get the last 15 pounds of excess off the body, yeahI know more is needed but would like to keep it at or around a consistent 1lb per week if possible. Having a month off work in January so hopefully a flying start, starting new business venture in February so perfect timing to make it a little more difficult.

Inviting any and all to critique what I'm doing and provide feedback where deemed necessary. Hopi g to get some help and hopefully help others to push towards their goals.

Best of luck to all!

Sounds pretty good Paul. Remember the resistance training gets the resting metabolism UP and the Cardio helps burn the fat. I would give yourself one day of rest. Let the body repair so you don't over train and cause yourself other problems.

Glad you're in, man. I don't know on the judging thing. Do people want to have a vote to see who the "winners"? Even though there isn't any prize or anything. I started it to just helps others and give serious motivation. To challenge everyone to be there best.

So everyone let me know what you think about having a vote of a winner or not.

You can go to go here : http://imageshack.us/

You can host a picture there and it will give you a link you can post directly into your forum message. It is pretty straight forward and easy. If you have trouble for some reason PM me.

I'm down for this, maybe this will actually make me get past the 150 lbs mark that I've been stuck on.

I'll get some before pictures up around January 1st, just so I can be as accurate as possible. Along with my weight in the morning. I'll be putting my lifting stats (before and after) just because I'm training for a sport instead, but some size would help. It'll be a win win situation. Anything else I'm forgetting?

Looking forward to this.

Thanks for Invite Pack. I don't think we need any judges, if we all stick to it we all win. I'm in it for the support that we all gave to each last time. I will post my pictures after the holidays. I want to enjoy them, figure I wont enjoy them after Jan. I need to loose about 30lbs. For my supplements I will try Dialene 4x from scivation, ON whey. I like the idea of monthly pictures, weekly weigh ins . Goal 1-2 lbs a week. Might need some recipes, tired of boring chicken. I have been making this chili. 2lbs turkey, onions, peppers and spices. I haven't figured out the ratio of prot, carbs and fats.

I'm not in this for prizes or titles. This is just a bunch of friends bonding together in a common goal. So I see no need for newspapers proving we're not cheating or rules or judges. I'm looking forward to knowing that someone out there is aware and cares that I'm still pluggin' away at staying fit.

And if it gets me show-ready, so much the better--if I can find a comp that has an Ultra-Master class :)

I need a lot of work. My goal is 175 by June 16th (My birthday), and about the time it warms up enough around here to go swimming. I'd like my BF to be around 8-10%, but not sure how feasible that is.

I'm not going to start on the 1st though. I've started already. I hope that isn't cheating.

Time to make things rock. I know you'll stick to your guns. I only have 17 pounds to take off so adding muscle the first month will be my main goal then super diet.

I'm just teasing. You said ALL muscle. That would preclude any fat at all, no? Strictly speaking, and of course only strictly speaking is humorous. :)

This is something I seriously need to do. Lost most of my weight, then went and turned around and got a great job- you know, the kind that gives you all the OT you can handle and isn't so labor intensive anymore...

Well, stress combined with too much OT and not enough time makes for an interesting balloon effect.

I can't keep holding on to this weight. It's detrimental to my health and its only a matter of time before it ends up bringing with it more than just the less than savory aesthetic aspects of it's baggage. My GERD is acting up again, what next?

I'm becoming fairly certain that I have found the person I am going to be committed to for life. What kind of life would it be if it were shortened from the 50, 60 even 70 more years I should have to come down to 30, 20 or even 15? I hate that I let it get to this point, but it's time to take point of that and make a difference.

I don't necessarily want to be a stud fit for winning shows. I'd settle for great tone, decent size and good definition. I had almost achieved that once, this time I need to complete that journey and not fall off that path.

I'm sitting at about 295, give or take depending on the day. Assuming I have lost no muscle between now and before (I don't think I have), that would mean I went from my 13.4% or so to about a 30%. Pretty alarming to be honest.

I hearby commit myself to a regimented workout in which each weak will be a step up from the last, coming from a moderate pace into an absolute frenzy by mid Febuary. I commit to being in the gym no less than 3x per week, and I commit to getting my diet under control and giving up once and for all the things that have made me fat, bloated and weak.

I commit to this for my family, the one I love, and for myself.

Because my health matters and I need to act like it.

I plan to start January 8th.

By the 4w marker, February 4th, I plan to have lost no less than 15lbs (of which surely half will be water, I understand). From there, I need to keep a pace of no less than 3lbs a week. Some weeks may be higher. Some may be lower, all is to be expected and understood. However, I will do whatever it takes (within reason), to hold a standard that I should average 3lbs a week of fat loss (about a % for the first while) and expect after the 16 week run to have lost over 40lbs, and be below 220 by June 24th.

To this, I commit.

I never could get into the HIIT, I more a LISS or whatever it's called. That and high protien diets. I'll be eating lots of hambuger and chicken starting tomorrow. Oh, time to start lugging around my gallon of water again. lol.

Are you posting new pics and Stats every week or 2 weeks?

HIIT is just the kind that has worked best for me. Though I have been doing some of the LISS as well. That way I make my body adapt each time. I am going to post stats bi-weekly, weigh-ins once a week, and pics every 3 to 4.

I hope quite a few more join. I'm hoping we can really get something serious going here to help a lot of people!

I have already hit the gym for 20 mins of HIIT today and another 15 mins of LISS right after. I'll be going to the gym in about an hour with my body to hit the weights with a vengeance. Look out iron, here I come! :)

If this thread is open to everyone, Im in. Would like to get to 300 by May. Currently doing Keto. I started Nov 30th counting calories and moved to keto on Dec 8th. My pic was taken dec 8th, hope thats close enough to our start date to use. Let me know! Thanks.

Keto is the best. Just make sure you have a good Multi-v and some Omega-3. Eating meat as a primary source gets in the old walet. Good luck, we are all here to help. ;)

I'll be here with you guys too, but I'm starting my cut a little sooner... actually started today. Who is going to judge this thing?! Should we have a vote at the end so the majority wins?

I think they have a polling web site we can use if we get all so serious about things. I'm down with whatever - I'm gonna be so ripped we won't need judges, lol. I joke.

Never used this one, but I have used fitday.com to keep track of my macros and calorie count for the day. So I can stay about where I need to be. Plus that way I don't have to eat the same exact thing, just clean.

Doing Keto myself. Not the cyclic Keto I was doing before, but hardcore keto :) A lot of your fats should be from Omega-3 in a keto diet.

I really don't think we need judges really. I suppose if people really wanted opinions on their end dates just ask every what they thought of the transformation.

Heck yeah, you are going to be ripped. Don't be all joking about that :) You are going to tear it up!

I know I can't do cheats. Doesn't work for me. At least unless I allow my body to go into serious ketosis. Then they will work once every 2 weeks, if done as my last meal so I won't feel like cheating all day. Even then my cheats are still clean, just higher carbs.

So, this week I have stayed right around 2000 cals. Keto style diet. Burnt at least 3500+ cals in exercise so far as well.

2000 cals is crazy low for keto kind of. I'll be with you on the 2000 calories and Keto style by mid Feb. How many pounds do you plan on dropping a week? I would think you could hit at least 5 pounds a week easy on that diet.

I also thought about waiting til after the Holidays but with no MT Contest I have no reason to wait. I actually had started eating more end of Nov and Mid Dec to get a little fat for the contest that never came, lol.

I'm sure my local gym will be packed with new years resolution people, which suck because my gym isn't that large to begin with but at least they give up by Mid Feb, lol.

The rest of us are here, just wirking on the plan and getting impatientto get started.

Finding it hard to find any time right now to look after myself between winding up from the current job and getting the new venture organised. The month I've allowed myself suddenly feelslike nowhere near enought time. I've all but given up on the workouts and feeling super crappy about myself right now. I guess it's for the greater good, but feeling like I'm losing valuable time.

Will go through the body stats and get some new pics taken and uploaded over the next few days and finalise my grand plan. Itching to get back to it. Although next week not a good one for it, just want to get it behind me and join with you guys in cranking out the improvements

I do have to eat a little lower having a metabolic syndrome like type 2 diabetes. Even though it is very much under control it still kinda throws a kink into things. I don't really have an exact goal for per week, but I'm hoping to be around 188 by the end. Going to push hard as hell for it.

Just remember that during this you really HAVE to make time for yourself. This is important to you and will of course improve your health. You gotta give yourself that me time even when you are busy. I know that is tough to do. I used to be the same way of never making any me time. It was always time for something else and someone else. I'm anxious for you to start too :) I think you'll be fun during this. I think once you get really going you'll enjoy the fun we can all have with this.

I'm doing an update ever Wednesday with pics and stats.

Well, I want in on this too.

I just moved to Wisconsin on the 1st of December and I dont know anyone yet, so all I do is work and go to the gym now.

Stats:
6'0"
201 lbs
10% BF

I would like to get down to 5% BF. I am having a hard time getting under 10 right now. So any advice you vets have would be great.

Cut out some carbs until you find a sweet spot.

Just got done slamming down 360 calories, I'm stuffed!! (Sarcasm).. :)

Thanks for the advice guys.

I am going to start my new meal plan as of today, but I will keep going after the first.

I will try a 50% protein, 35% Fat and 15% carb split.

My maint. intake should be 2900 calories. I will only eat 2100 for the next weeks and see where that gets me.

Protein 249 grams
Fat 63 grams
Carbs 84 grams (most of which is in my post workout shake)

Hey guys count me in on this to after the holidays of course. I was making great progress until I went home on vacation for almost a month in October. Since then I haven't done much and this is the motivation I need to get my expanding waist back in the gym.

I will post pics by the 1st and be ready to go.

5'11 at about 197 lbs. BF% I have no idea, but it isn't pretty.

In that article it has a calculator to help you out with macro ratios for cutting. Explains about contest dieting. It has been quite helpful to me in the past. Hope that helps out some. If not, ask again and see if others have different help. Or if the article helps but you have other more specific questions just ask.

Just choose a starting date that isn't later than Jan. 14th. Then on that date take your measurements, do a weigh-in, and takes some pics. Hoping to get everyone to update weigh-ins and measurements once a week. Then pics every 2-4 weeks.

That's fantastic, man! Way to kick some arse.

Oh crap! That's what I forgot to update was my weight on Monday. I was at 228lbs, but I had ate terribly the week and a half before. Way too much that is. Clean, but too large portions. Weight was 236lbs. Have to see what it comes out as this coming Monday.

Hello all,
I'm new here. Just registered have to update my stats tomorrow. Long time browser of these forums. First time poster. Count me in on this. Im sick of waking up seeing the same thing in the mirror every morning. Lately I've been working out though and them little improvements I see push me to do more and keep me motivated. Seen this thread and I love the sound of it. I'm going to enjoy my christmas and come back in the new year ready to work hard and achieve my goals. Also over the christmas break I'm going to think of what I want to achieve and write it down and maybe post back later. I will probably post pics also. Anyway count me in on this. Thanks

If newbies are allowed I'd love to join! I REALLY need to get in shape before I move for school in the Summer and this might be the kick in the butt I need!

Not to hijack the thread, but this caught my attention! Hope you don't mind. Is it common for someone to go so low with carbs? What is the main reason? I have always been told a healthy diet consists of about 50% carbs, and that it is extremly unhealthy to go below 40%. Just curious!

Go ahead and join us. Doesn't matter if you are new.

As for the old, mostly carb diet... That's just older information put out by the FDA. Carbs do have their place. Most can't handle mentally a really low carb diet. Some can. Is it unhealthy? No, keto style dieting has been a around a good while now. It's a tough diet to stick to, but the results of fat burning is significant for most people. Carbs cause an insulin spike. Which in most cases is more likely to get you to store fat rather than burn it. Being a type 2 diabetic who no longer needs to take any medication for it, I can saw the more keto style of diet has helped me get off and stay off meds.

There are LOTS of articles that can be read on bb.com to help in your jouney. Questions here are good too. In a prior message I posted a link to a good article by Layne Norton. Give it a read. He is of a mind that lower carbs, but not majorly low carbs is the way to go. Give it a read and lemme know what you think.

Thank you! I'll read it right now. Im silently cursing all my bio teachers for telling me I mustmustMUST eat 50% carbs. Thats what I get for not doing my own research :S I'm not diabetic, but am insulin resistant. Even though the only carbs I eat are from fruit or whole wheat, and when I'm getting lots of exercise and sticking to around 1500 calories a day I still can't lose weight. On the rare occasion I treat myself to poptarts or cookies (can't be good ALL the time) for the next couple of days after I steadily gain weight, usually a couple of pounds.
I'll definitely be reading more about the low carb diets, it might be exactly what I need to get rid of these VERY stubborn 30 pounds. I'm even more pumped about the challenge.

Thanks!

Well, type 2 diabetes is an insulin resistance. Type 1 is where you are insulin dependent. Meaning you have to give yourself insulin shots.

You are quite welcome. Anything else I can help with just ask.

That's great to add in the weights. Weights/resistance training is very important to weight loss just as cardio is. The weight/resistance training brings up the overall metabolism and burns calories. Cardio burns calories and raises the metabolism too, but cardio does it for a few hrs after you are finished. Resistance training raises the metabolism for 24-36hrs after the session.

So as I mentioned a few message ago, I had forgotten to update on my weigh-in last Monday. I remembered yesterday after John said what he lost. The weigh-in last Monday was 236lbs. Today's weigh-in was 229lbs. Here's my updated stats.

thepackleader updated Body Stats - Arms: 16.3 ins., Calves: 16.1 ins., Chest: 45 ins., Forearms: 14 ins., Hips: 40 ins., Neck: 16.8 ins., Thighs: 26 ins., Waist: 37.3 ins.

So chest went up .75, Arms same, Hips down 1 full inch, Waist down .75, Thigh down .25, Calves down .65, Forearms up .25, and Neck down .75.

I always have trouble seeing my own results, but I actually think my face looks a little slimmer.

Well tonight was my 3rd full day with very little carbs, and my workout sucked. I have done the low carb thing several times before with great results, but I always hate the lack of energy in the gym.
I start off strong, but its all gone in about 2 sets. I did chest tonight and I could not even do 3 full sets of 10 with weight that I used to throw around pretty easy. This is why cutting is so hard. I feel small, and weak. It is a mental thing I know, but I want to eat and grow every time this happens, and next thing you know the cut cycle is over and I made no progress.

So I need to stick to it this time and get to my goal before I start bulking again.

Good advice. My advice is this: Work hard but give yourself that one day to cheat for the family get together and only ONE day!!!! Personally I'm doing the day of Christmas and New years Eve and then I'm done with cheats for the next few months. Eating stuff on Holidays has always been a good thing in my book but doing cheats day after day after day is a no no.

Stay Strong to those of you that have already started.

Did it hurt your progress when you were cutting?

I started cutting a few weeks ago, and I was making steady progress. Then I started adding carbs to my diet. Not much, but I my pre-workout drink (Muscle Tech nANo Vapor) has 20 grams of carbs, and my post workout drink (Muscle Tech Nitro Tech and Cell Tech) had about 80 grams combined. I did that for one full week, and I had plenty of strength, but my cut progress stopped. I did not gain any fat back, I was just kind of maintaining?

Maybe the post workout drink was too much. I need to find that balance for my body type. It sucks trying to do it.

Reps though, thank you.

If you need the extra carbs, definitely use them BEFORE the workout. I know a lot of people think that post workout is really important. And I would say that it is pretty important if bulking, but not while cutting. What is important is that preworkout. Whether it be a preworkout drink or food. Get your carbs in there. 20-40g of carbs before a workout should do pretty well. I would personally keep the 80 grams after the workout out of the equation. You sound like you may be a lot like I am as far as how your body responds. I can tell you that when I do carbs after my workouts it always stalls my cutting process as well. It has even turned it back the wrong way :(

Some of this is about finding that sweet spot that works just right for YOU personally. Don't give up. Just give it some tweaking from time to time. You'll find that spot. Don't let the fluctuations get you down or make you quit. Stand strong. We are here for you.

Thanks buddy,

In theory, the post workout carbs are supposed to spike blood sugar and cause Insulin to be released so the protein has a way of getting to the muscle and helping it grow. But your prob right, I need to get my mind away from bulking. Cutting is a different beast. I just eed to figure out how not to get discouraged.

I am down to 197 today, and for some reason going back under 200 is a major thing in my head. I dont ever want to be skinny again so this is hard. I have a feeling I will be 188 or so when I am done cutting. I am not sure how I will handle that. lol

I eat most of my carbs before any workout then after I have a 4gram carb 25gram protien shake by Cryosport. Protien of course will maintain or repair muscle. Any carbs after a workout in my opinion will just be stored as fat.

Even before my Cardio I eat a nice meal since I will be burning any reserves and using the food I just ate as a back up sorce instead of burning muscle as a source of energy. You will still create a calorie deficit if your calories are correct and start losing the weight in any case.

I did that for one full week, and I had plenty of strength, but my cut progress stopped. I did not gain any fat back, I was just kind of maintaining?

Maybe the post workout drink was too much. I need to find that balance for my body type. It sucks trying to do it.

Reps though, thank you.

How about drinking WaxyMaize during your workout. That might help or another supplement like purple wrath or something similiar. Scivation has one call X-Tend all BCAA

Personally I don't believe in Suppliments, the ones I do believe in but do not necessarily use would be Protien Shakes (and only Protien not a cocktail of crap), Creatine (Because it works), and Steriods. All that other stuff to me is garbage.

List of Garbage:

Diet pills: Full of caffiene which in reality isn't going to burn crap for calories (stick with cardio).

Vasodilatadors: Might as well take an overdose on aspirin (do not do this). Just a blood thinner.

All and any energy, boosters, super repair, pre, prep, post and all other blah blah blah are simply things you can find in: Meats for muscle repair (protien). Candy, Pasta and so on for Energy boosting (Carbs).

For example: The only thing I took for the muscletech contest was the protien shakes. Yea. Durr. lol.

Just my 2 cents.

I never cut out carbs during my first cut at the beginning of last year. I always felt weak when I did. Cutting out carbs for me did not work. I maintained a 50/40/10, c/p/f diet the entire time. I intend to do the same this time around.

I think I will try something for one week, and If I get results I will keep going until it stops. Then I will change it up. If I dont see results, I will change it after the first week.

I am looking forward to next year, It is nice to have a group of guys and gals who support what we do and encourage one another. I am sick of family not understanding what it is we try to do. They are no help, lol

I have to disagree with you. I can agree that supplements are NOT a miracle pill. I believe they do help. Though for them to help you to have your nutrition and workouts dialed in. Their help is just that help. They won't do your work or research for you. A lot of them make outrageous claims that just aren't true for sure. I think also with supplementation it can be a guessing game to figure what will actually help the individual.

That being said, I still respect your opinion even if I don't quite agree.

See, there's what I'm talking about! Finding that sweet spot that works just right for you. Obviously my style of diet wouldn't be great for you. Just as I know that macro ratio is very detrimental to my own progress. Fantastic to get other people's take on things. Gives more options to those who haven't found that special style for themselves yet.

I think that is a wise idea, right there! Family can be tough. I am pretty lucky. My wife and kids are rather supportive. Extended family while they think it is great all the weight I've lost they still seem to think I should be able to just eat whatever. As if crappier food or huge portions aren't a problem :)

There is a sample of Dave Palumbo's Keto Diet. Take a look and see what you think. I have to warn you though. A Keto diet is very strict and tough to follow. It might not be something for you. Though you won't really know unless you try it. You surely aren't obligated to do this kind of diet. You could also read the other article I posted by Layne Norton on his way of dieting.

hmm i know the keto diet is good diet if you wanna cut, but perhaps i should look at something different, the amount that you have to eat seems unusual e.g. 5 eggs mixed with another 4 egg whites, thats alot of egg for breakfast....hmmm. perhaps and morning run with a low fat diet would do me more good.

lol. Yea. It's just that the building blocks for muscle would be your protien. Water is also the big key. But to say that any suppliment will help in the recovery time or building of of muscle seems a little ridiculous.

But I feel ya a little ;)

Anyway Not trying to turn this into a big argument. Progress is coming along well, I had to break down and weigh myself. I have lost 2.6 pounds and my official first day of weigh in is not until tomorrow so that pretty good I guess....

Layne Norton told me if you are going to eat carbs and you should the best times are before and after training, no matter what time you work out. You need the carbs to help shuttle the protein into the muscles for repair.

How do we post pictures on this forum. LOL Flash backs from last year.

Trans great start. 2.6 lbs in a week. you probably don't want to hear this and neither would I, but you should either add a little calories or cut back on the aerobics unless you are thinking a little of extra water weight. Try to keep the weight loss to 1 to 2 lbs a week. Any more loss than that you are loosing muscle, unless you have a large excess of fat to loose and you Trans do Not. I am talking people on the Biggest Looser show.

I decided to start cutting this coming Monday.

I also agree with the supplements. They are supplements and your diet needs to be dialed in first. The competitions are typically one in the kitchen and not in the gym.

I was watching Kai Green's leg workout with Ron Glass last night. KILLER. My legs were sore this morning just watching it. It is on this website.

Has anyone heard from Izzy that won last year, did he fall off the face of the earth?

Well I just got home from the gym. My workout tonight was awesome!!!! I was strong, I had tons of energy and I got a great pump.

I was going to do back tonight, but I switched it up and did bi's and tri's instead.

I took some of your advice and I went ahead and ate some carbs pre-workout.

Also during the Mr Olympia of 2008, I had a great opportunity to meet PT and Kane from Controlled Labs. We got to hang out and even went to the gym and trained together that week. They gave me a bunch of Controlled Labs stuff and I decided to use some of it. I had some Green Mag. and Purple Wrath, and I went ahead and took them today.

The rest of my diet is in check. I am eating around 2200 calories a day, 250 grams of protein, and I upped my carbs to 90.

As of yesterday, my waist was down about 1/2 an inch, but my weight was down 4 pounds. Today, my waist is still down, but the weight is back. It is amazing how much effect carbs has on water in the muscles.

I respect Layne quite a bit, but I don't agree with everything he has to say on dieting and nutrition. I think what he does and says it pretty good for a lot of people, but it does not work for everyone. His dieting style is also assuming you have a large amount of muscle mass to work with in my opinion.

You can go to imageshack.us and host your pics. It will give you a link to post into your message.

Suddenly the 3 Christmas dinners I have to go to are sounding a little less scary. I always end up offending someone when I say I'm full or don't really want it (even store bought deserts-I have a very food oriented family). This could be the excuse I need!

Good to see a lot of support for the 2010 challenge! There is a lot of folk trying to lose weight. Personally I'm on the 2010 'bulk up' challenge. Will post pics jan 1st, stats, etc. This is good for personal motivation more than anything.
I'll be doing Iron Addicts Simple Power Based Routine... http://www.ironaddicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8050

Actually i started it a while ago but took 3 weeks off so im more or less starting it again! Its mainly for beginners and intermediate lifters.

The point being....there's a lot of beginners on the 2010 challenge. So if you are one and don't know what your doing this is a good place to start and we can work toward the same goal!

Also... as part of the 2010 challenge, for 16 weeks, why not make some other commitments that will really help. For me its going to be;

1) "Ban the Booze" - personally I'm going to try stay off the alcohol for the challenge duration. But its a lot to ask so howz about this: You stay off the booze but are allowed two blowout sessions :)

2) "Dig the diet" - Obviously diet is 70% of the battle. During the challenge i'm going to cut out processed sugars (sweets, etc) and junk food. But still have two blowout sessions of course! ;)

You just jump right into it. Lowering your carbs slowly won't get you into ketosis. It takes 4 to 5 days for full blown ketosis. It means you have to get in those 4 or 5 days of 40-60g carbs BEFORE it will do what you want it to do. Using fat as it's primary fuel source.

That being said some do lower slowly, but then you have to wait longer than the 14 days for your carb up day. Plus, to be honest keto can be rough enough, the faster you go into ketosis the better. Once into ketosis the energy starts to get better again.

I am starting January 3rd. Start with a nice fresh week. My plan is a low carb super high protein diet. A ton of cardio and when lifting it will be low weight for high reps. I have been doing this a lot lately and I like it a lot. For instance I will do dumball bench and start with 60lbs for 15reps then 60 for 15 then 65 for 12 and do that 3 times. The last couple hurt but it feels good.

On the Keto that you talking about. I'm also going to be working my way into keto, I love when you start getting that weird taste in your mouth if you know what I mean. I remember the first time I went keto it was by accident, I was taking in about 40grams of carbs when it started to happen.

Had a great workout as well tonight...Only one other person in place with me...Got in 1.5 hours weights and 10 mins cardio. Im following the Mens Health Fitness Trainer. So far so good, have lost around 6 lbs since starting 3 weeks ago.

Maybe this is a good time to remember all the accomplishments we have made along the year to kick us off for the new year and maybe up our goals?

So far this year I went from 278 down to 248 currently. I quit chewing tobacco cold turkey almost 3 months ago. And I started going to the gym since November 26th religously, almost daily.

What is everyone else's accomplishments?

You're progress in incredible! And quitting tobacco on top of that! Wow! Keep up the good work. :)

Good luck with that. :)

I'm in as well. I've just started lurking around and have a lot of reading to do. This looks like a great forum and a bunch of helpful people. Usually work out at the gym but have been off and on for a couple months now due to vacations, holiday, and finding out my wife is pregnant. Now I've let myself go and have a quite a bit of work ahead of me. Been researching racks here the past week and would like to hopefully find something soon so I can work out at home. I will post my info on the 4th. Ps. Any suggestions or tips on power racks shoot me a PM.

Good luck and Merry Christmas everyone,

Jeremy
Congrats on the baby. :) Your 1st? Good luck with that and all else. Life will be busy. Don't give up on working out.

we are asking to post picture updates about once a month, weight changes about every week, nothing is set in stone, we are just here for that mortal support of each and to have a friendly competition. Best of luck to you.

Thanks. I pretty much post those things anyway. I'm looking forward to some add'l support and getting to know you guys. My last group sorta dwindled out, haven't had much support last coupla months. I work out at home and have no one here for advice.

Merry Christmas everyone!
I need a real kick in the butt to get into a routine. I'm pretty motivated to keep with my diet, but I don't make enough time to get to the gym. Even when I do go to the gym, I never do weights, only the tred mill and eliptical. Maybe if I start by just using the dumbells I'll build up my confidence? Not sure why I'm so iffy about the weights, lack of experience I guess.

They don't bite! Get started with the weights asap. You'll love 'em. But 1st do some research and write a program and start with that. Make sure your form is good, start lite and when you have some confidence increase the weights.
You CAN do this!

Most women avoid the weights for a few reasons.
1. You dont know how to use them, because no one has ever shown you.
2. You dont want to feel or look silly doing it.
3. It is intimidating.
4. It is easy to get on the treadmill and you think that something is better than nothing.

To be honest, resistance training is key to long term weight loss. You have to strengthen your muscles for several reasons. Cardio is very misunderstood and it can actualy do more harm that good if your not eating right and your not doing some sort of resistance training. You end up losing muscle, not fat and that is why when you stop, you gain all of the weight back and end up worse than when you started.

1. You will increase your metabolism. The more muscle you have, the higher it is.
2. Your body stops using muscle for energy because it now thinks it needs it, and it starts using fat.
3. When you work out with the weights, your body actualy burns more calories after the workout for a longer period of time than when you do just cardio.

So I would say, go to the gym and find a trainer. Pay for a few sessions ad learn how to use the resistance equipment, and get a solid workout plan together.

I could go into lots of detail, if you want me to I can. I will help out as much as you would like me to.

Trying to lose my small party keg of a gut. I know my diet is whacked, so I'm charting what I eat for the next week to see where I can clean it up. Today was the 1st day and I'm already at 50 / 361 / 117 (Fat / Carbs / Protein) at 2288. Calories with dinner still to go.

Tomorrow when they gym is open, I plan on setting up an appointment to get measured. Will post Pics within the next week

I'd love to do a few session with a trainer, but right now money is in the negatives, I'm lucky to pay rent and buy groceries so it's not really an option.

Would it be reasonable to get a program together with stretches, cardio and dumbbells, then gradually include the resistance equipment on the appropriate days as I watch more people use them and become more comfortable in the gym?

I can make you a simple workout plan for 3-4 days a week. I am sure you can ask a staff member at your gym what the exercises on the plan are, and show you how to do them for free. That would be a good start.

Stretches are great to do before and after your workout, and do your cardio for 30 minutes after you do strength training, NOT before. The first 20-30 minutes of cardio, your body is only burning stored carbs, not fat anyway. So if you workout first, you can burn off some of those sugars and get a great workout because you have energy. Then do your cardio after. There will be less sugar to burn and since you activated your muscles, your body is less likely to use them for energy and turn to fat as a form of fuel.

Here is is some simple math to put this in perspective.

If you go 3 miles on the treadmill, regardless of speed you will burn 300 calories on average.
If you jogged that, it would still take 30 minutes. If you walk it about 45.

Do that 3 times a week and you burn 900 calories.

There is 3500 calories in one pound of fat. So it would take you 4 weeks to lose 1 pound of fat. That is not very fast.

Not to mention that like I said, the forst 20-30 minutes is only sugar, not fat. So when you go eat again, you replace the sugar and you did nothing for fat loss. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Dont get discouraged, just earn to love the weights!!!! Oh, and eat right.

Yes. dumbbells are resistance equip. You can find a lot online, including the articles here on bb.com. Or you can borrow a book from the library-free. I started following the dumbbell only program described in the fairly new book called "The Body Fat Solution" by Tom Venuto. He pretty much designed it for beginners. It's easy to follow and more important-it works. I work out 6 days a week in my basement. MWF I do cardio. TThSat I do a full body workout with dumbbells. The only thing I spent money on in this venture is heavier dumbbells and some sports bras and good shoes. To be fair I already owned the Nordictrack.
You also don't need to spend money on supplements and shakes and stuff. Just eat well. Healthful food can be costly so shop the sales.
Good Luck. Feel free to come back with more questions as needed.

Ok, no more excuses! I would love if you could help me with a workout plan. The gym is a student gym, so there are a lot of Fitness and Health Promotion students there who I'm sure I could convince to show me the exercises (and if not, there is always youtube!).

I really have to keep in mind that everyone was new at some point, so if I look a little silly trying to figure something out (as long as I'm not hurting myself) then so what?

Thank you for the plan!! I quickly did Day 1s exercises (that I can use dumbbells for) to make sure I understand them. They really don't seem bad at all! Though I'll admit, with a couple of them it'll be a real fight to finish the sets even with the 5 pound dumbbells I was using, the rest I can probably do at 10.
I've got a long way to go! LOL

When I'm done a set, how long of a break do I give myself?

Your welcome.

Try to rest about 45-60 seconds max. That way your heart rate stays high and it turns the workout into a type of cardio as well. It should only take you about 30 minutes to get through each workout.

I tried to make it easy for you, and get your feet wet. When you get bored with it, let me know and I can give you a more advanced routine.

That and the fact that I'm 241 lbs. :) Ah, my apologies. I didn't read anything between the first and last page. I'm not a newb to the gym by any means, but ever since my back injury last year (doing deadlifts) I've been very cautious trying to get into the grand scheme (basically swing) of things. When I was doing it regularly I was probably in the gym for about an hour to an hour-and-a-half at a time. My goals are just to get where I was first, at 225 and 16%, then progress from there (now 241 and 23%).

I fell of track. Got sick ass hell this weekend and hit the food for comfort. Back at it starting today though. :) Hopefully all is well with everyone else.

I did as well... fell off track, but I didn't have an excuse. I wasn't sick. I just ate a bunch. Yesterday we went to go see Avatar 3D, but as usual when we go see a movie at the theater we stopped by a local pub we love (The Ale House), and grabbed a bite to eat. I was somewhat "good" and avoided anything fried. I got the chicken quesadilla which seemed the "healthiest" thing on the menu, lol. The only problem was I had two beers. (a 23oz and 16oz)

I'm up in weight this morning. It's likely water weight, but with as much food as we have been eating, it wouldn't surprise me if about half of the weight (3lbs) is fat.

The sad thing is, From Christmas Eve until today, I have not tracked any calories. I haven't eaten a lot of candy or junk, but Thursday we had spaghetti, Friday morning my wife made Pancakes (I put a small amount of PB on each instead of syrup), and that night I made a 3lb Lamb Shank. Saturday I grilled up some Pork Chops and some red potatoes and Broccoli (the broccoli was steamed not grilled).

Actually now that I think about it, there was more booze. Christmas eve we had some wine my wife got as a Christmas present from work and Christmas we had a bit of light beer for christmas cheer.

As long as your hitting the gym and doing some cardio your off to a good start. I would start tracking calories if I where you. The only reason I ate what I did would be to help with the bodies repair and to help fight off the sickness I had. I was so sick I slept probably 32 hours out of the 2 days. I couldn't breath, lol.

Eating out once a week should be a treat until you can get your diet under control. You'll get it down. When your ready you SHOULD start tracking cals so you can feel positive about moving foward. Good luck.

Had a good workout today (also went Thursday morning). A little bit of cardio, but I think the extra food certainly helped with my lifts, lol. PRs all around.

I usually track calories. I use sparkpeople to do it, and regularly track it religiously. The holidays were an abnormality. Also, the eating out is usually 2-3 times a month, though the weight loss goal has less to do with that than finances.

I'm impressed with how many are taking up this challenge. For me it will be a chance to have you all keep me honest over the next few months. I haven't really "let go" of last year's work. I'm 165 @ 10%. My goal is to be 170 @ 6%. The tough thing is that I've got two small fractures in my right wrist from an accident Thanksgiving Eve (don't try to show your grandkids how you can rollerskate backwards). The doc's got me in a wrist brace until February, so I can't do any lifts that bend my wrist or put presure on my palm toward my elbow. I can do some of the machines--pec flys, elbow/delt raises, pull-downs, elevated cable curls, push-downs--about one exercise for each upper-body muscle group. So I'm doing:
Day 1--upper body, abs
Day 2--Legs
Day 3--cardio
Repeat (with Sundays rest)

I'll go to a more normal workout plan when the wrist gets better.

How do you adjust your routine when you are sick? Just stick to weights? Give yourself a couple of rest days? I've been fighting it, but unforunitly I'm coming down with something. Blech! Had a good work out today though.
I go to the gym around the same time my highschool biology teacher does. I find seeing him there gives me A LOT of extra motivation to get through my workout. I successfully remained invisible for my entire 4 year highschool sentence (basically, just stuck around with my close friends) so seeing that left over piece of the 'old me' I guess gives me the push I need.

I have a question about the hanging leg raises. I'm not sure if it's because of how weak my upper body is, or because I'm short and have trouble reaching the handels, but I can't keep myself up for more then a few reps without having to step back down, adjust, then lift my feet back up. Is it something I'm going?

It is just a lack of upper body strength. It takes a while for some females to get it. Just do your best, it will get better.

If you get sick, just take a few days to rest up, your body needs to rest and heal, working out may make it take longer

If you get sick, it really is advisable to give yourself some rest. If the body can't rest it won't be able to fight of whatever virus you have. Then as Glyph said it may take longer to get over it. I don't know about you, but for me the rest is hard for me to take most of the time. Though we have to listen to our bodies as well.

With the hanging leg raises, just stick to it. It is somewhat of a lack of uppper body strength. Lack of a little bit of core strength. It will get better with time. Don't let it discourage you.

As for people wondering or wanting diet advice or workout advice, please do ask. You can discuss it in the thread too. I encourage it. Then you can get different points of view and others may end up getting their own questioned answered if they see the answer someone already asked. In my opinion it doesn't derail the thread. it is all apart of the challenge and the motivation we all need. The help and guidance we can give each other is a good thing.

Little upset with myself. While I haven't ate any garbage food, I've ate too much the past few days. It really bothers me when I do this from time to time. I've had people tell me it is possibly my body telling me what it needs. I'm inclined to believe it, but it still gives me some frustration :(

Tomorrow is another day. It shall get better and I will fight back. Weekends are my just cardio days, so hopefully tomorrow weights first should give me a shot in the arm :D

So we will all have struggles from time to time. Talk about them here if you need or want to. We are all human. We make mistakes. The best thing we can do is to just move past them and not dwell.

I hope I'm helping and if I can be more helpful, just say so.

Agreed! I feel left out of the loop when everything is being discussed behind the scenes in PMs. I'd like to hear what everybody else is doing, saying, and learning.

Keep your head up. We all have our bad days on diet. The key is to balance it out. So try to eat right for the next few days and your good to go. I know I ate too many home baked cookies this last week. I dont ever buy them, or make them, but people sent them to me and I am not going to throw them away. lol

I am back on track myself. I am back up to 202.6 and been holding for the last 4 days since I put carbs back in my diet.
