I am doing a research paper for my biology class, and i must preform an experiment regarding the effects of caffeine on brine shrimp. So for my research i must use studies of the effects of caffeine on other organisms, animals, humans etc. I have been looking, only sucessful in finding one study..Where should i look? Any reliable sites?

Idk where you live, but if you live anywhere near a biggish university you can probably go to their library and get a day pass and use their online resources, such as EBSCOhost. I use EBSCOhost a ton. It's basically a huge search engine of tons of things, including many medical/health journals. Tons of info.

www.pubmed.com is a good place to start. You could also try things like MIMS (medicine information manuals) - caffeine is a DRUG and they have LOTS of data on pharmacology/ system effects/ toxicity etc etc.
But -->>> What exact *effects* are they asking for?
Performance?
Cardiovascular?
Nervous system?
^
because that is a LOT of information! :o

Any effects i have to talk about, keep in mind its for brine fish not humans my experiment is on..more like life span, Death Rate, deformities, behavoir(do they move faster, slower, die no change), is there color change maybe or even internal problems..My topic is broad i guess, but i have now found three studies from Pubmed, well i used the sources link on the bottom and went there, i find that easier, and more useful. I can't find any study on marine organisms which is my main problem.

Is this an experiment that you will perform or just a paper with good research?
I wonder how you will measure all the things you talk about tracking. Brine shrimp are rather small.

yes brine shrimp are small i wanted to do fish my teacher said no, brine shrimp because there will be much more in each container..im not so sure how i will track the changes..but yes i am doing the experiment. The intial research paper was manditory though prior to the experimentation. The paper was actually due yesterday, i only got 3 pages worth of information, it was not an easy paper for me to write.

Hi Dimasso69,
I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but in undertaking my research, I've found that many sources suggest that if caffeine is consumed about one hour before a cardiovascular training session, it will provide more adrenaline and energy to train more intensely, and therefore burn more calories. Furthermore, many studies suggest that caffeine helps the body break down body fat more efficiently (to be used by the body for fuel) if consumed prior to cardiovascular exercise.
If you're looking for info from larger organisations with 'brand name' references, you might try the following - one from the U.S., and one from the U.K:
- Journal of the American College of Nutrition (jacn.org)
- Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (jissn.com)
Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

I don't have any information, sorry. I was wondering though, how are you planning on administering caffeine to fish?

I am not exactly sure, but i think my teacher reccommended that i put pure caffeine which she has for me and drop it into the brine shrimps bowl daily..the amount differein obviously. I would do this at the same time as feedings

Thanks..not exactly what im looking for since it's not on humans for my experiment, but thank you.

I trust you'll be using two brine shrimp bowls to observe the difference between a 'control group' of normal shrimp and the caffeinated shrimp. You might try videoing both bowls together, too. I don't know what you may notice though, aside from perhaps increased activity... or death :)

haha idrk..possibly color change..who knows..and 3 or 4 bowls actually lnone/ow/med/high or none/low/high caffeine intake. The procedure is actually gonna be typed up later today or tomorrow where i will come up with estimated amounts and how many shrimp etc..then i have a meetng with my teacher sometime in january where we discuss what i need to change..then the experiement starts:D

I read something on a sportscience journal where caffeine was beneficial to speeding up recovery post workout, but the benefits were higher in people who had no tolerance. I found it on a random google search one time so I am not sure how legit, it seemed like the journal actually reported studies though.

I googled the effects of caffeine on brine shrimp and found a few studies that have already been done and might help.
Unfortunetly with a low post count i cant link, but if you go to googled and search for "brineshrimp caffeine" you get a few results.

This. God I hate ebscohost but it really helps for college papers. Another similiar site is LexisNexis.

That's a problem with caffeine, it binds to adenosine receptors and thus blocks adenosine (which would make you tired, or calm), but you're brain will respond by simply increasing the number of receptors. So you build up more and more tolerance over time. One way to recreate the boost you originally felt is to taper off (or cold-turkey off) the caffeine. I'm guessing you're not thrilled to do that. Here's a second, totally-unproven-hunch method: Take a bunch of l-theanine supplement about an hour before you go to bed each night, maybe two milligrams of Theanine for every one milligram of caffeine you consumed that day.
