Y! exclusive: Illness forces Lesnar out of fight

Buzz up! 2 PrintBrock Lesnar, the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s massive heavyweight titleholder, was forced to withdraw Monday from his highly anticipated Nov. 21 title defense in Las Vegas against Shane Carwin.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the news to Yahoo! Sports. White said Lesnar has been ill for more than three-and-a-half weeks and unable to train. With the bout at UFC 106 less than a month away, Lesnar was forced to postpone the title defense.

More From Kevin Iole'Shogun' has no one to blame but himself Oct 25, 2009 Machida retains title in controversial decision Oct 25, 2009 “He said he’s never been this sick in his life,” White said. “He said it’s been going on for a long time and he just hasn’t been able to shake it.”

White said he does not believe Lesnar had the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu.

The fight matched two of the biggest and most powerful heavyweights in the UFC. Lesnar (4-1), a former World Wrestling Entertainment star, was a junior college and NCAA Division I wrestling champion. Carwin is a former Division II national wrestling champion.

Both men weigh around 295 pounds and cut weight to make the heavyweight division’s 265-pound limit.

White said he is not sure when the fight will be rescheduled or if Carwin will still fight on the card.

“We’re still working everything out,” he said.

Carwin (11-0), who made several appearances in Los Angeles on Saturday to promote the fight, was clearly disappointed at getting the news.

“My heart just sank, as you can imagine,” Carwin said. “Hopefully, we’ll get it rescheduled soon.”

The co-feature at UFC 106 is set to be a light heavyweight bout between Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin, both among the company’s most popular fighters. That bout could be moved to main event status if White does not land a suitable opponent for Carwin for that date.

I'm going to start triple dosing myself with resveratrol if this keeps up with swine flu spreading this fast.

pissed!

but funny to see that the fight was postponed with a month left for an illness that may be trailing off, but dana was unwilling to accomodate rampage/evans due to 'page's filming schedule.

Did anyone else see after the decision for Machida, Dana went over to Shogun and looked like he said "You won it.". What the ****, I guess they'll get $$$ for a rematch but that was bs. I don't hold it against Lesnar for postponing. Carwin's undefeated and Brock is going to have to get his stuff together more so than he had for Mir. I respect Brock but I'm not convinced he's more than a ground and pound. Eventually his opponents will figure out ways around that, I think even Mir could possibly take him in a rematch.

lol..stall!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lets keep lesnar champ for as long as possible (dana constantly criticizes other orgs for having their title holding champs go LONG periods without fighting, yet lesnar has not really defended his title all that much), because he needs more time to train and gain experience, before he fights some well rounded opponents his size.

They will still run commercials hoping for pre-orders

If this fight would of not been cancelled it would of been his 3rd fight with in a 12 month period. Which is about the avg. of 3 fights per yr.

11/08 UFC 91 defeated Couture to win title.
7/09 UFC 100 defeated Mir to unify the belt
11/09 UFC 106 would of defended but canc. due to illness.

The long wait between 91 and 100 was due to Mir's 12/08 UFC 92 defeat of Nog and Mir pulled out of the original fight date due to injury. That cannot all be blamed on Brock.

I do not blame any of it on Brock (serious) I blame Dana White,
since he won the belt he has 1 fight, in the 12 months
