Today will be my first day back to training Olympic Lifting. May just do some power cleans and hang cleans ..just need to ease myself back into it again. I did an hour of cardio this morning followed by my upper body workout (plus 4 sets of 6 pull-ups...whoot) but I think I'll be fine by tonight again. Can't wait!!

took few days off due to minor injury and other issues and 85%+ feel super heavy-barley hit 80% of my snatch max today and was sloppy- but my technique feels smoother on lighter weights due to not being sore at all. Whats good way to get used to the feeling of heavy weights again in the lifts? Heavy dl's many? Or work on the power movements maybe to work on speed?
I was working in 90%+ range almost daily no problem before took about week off

On a similar note to Someone, I'm just taking an easy week until Saturday. Power versions of the lifts and pulling, no squatting to rest my knees and get rid of all the nagging aches and pains that have built up.
I normally just ice it, take my BCAAs/protein and fish oils and call it a day. However, it has been sapping my strength lately and my recovery has been ****ty. My cold is pretty much gone too which is great, but I have been having back spasms.

you would probably be better with full versions of the lifts at around 70% if you want a lighter workload. Make sure to do a few sets with just the bar and then add some weight.
Power versions are gonna be similar to squatting to parallel, meaning more stress on the knees.

my calves have been sore lately from squatting.
Is this normal? I had taken 1-2weeks off from squatting so I'm wondering if its just my body not being used to squatting, or if its because I'm drifting forward. I seem to be keeping the weight back on the heels.
boykid28
09-29-2010, 07:20 AM
it could be that ur knees are going to far forward so its putting more stress on your calf. or maybe it could be cause your calfs r not up to par with the rest of your legs. like many peoples grip/lower back in the deadlift.

Try foam rolling first thing every session. My knees only bug me in snatches for volume.
Just finished squatting about 80 times today. 30 front squats and 49 back squats. My legs feel awesome; the more volume with heavy weight I do, the better my legs feel afterwards. Really confusing. Anyways, can't wait to get some bumpers and experience Oly overdose.

lol same usually on later sets when tired and catch wide and knees come in a bit on way up.
Also did ton of volume after missing again 85% snatch. Ended up doing like 20 sets of 2-5 reps-various weights light to semi heavy-. Feel exhausted now didn't even do anything afterwards. Might go back to gym and just do some squats though.
having your own set is awesome cracky I just go out all the time and do sets with light weights for form when bored. Only thing that sucks is that I dont have enough weight to do back squats at my gym so can only do front squats and light back squats for volume. Have to do heavy sets at local gym.
also straps make doing lots of snatches awesome I use them for pretty much every set after my first few heavy attempts. Really allows you to do ton of volume.

I always have stiffness in the back of my right knee, but just that side. Why is that? I wear sleeves, roll, ice and take fish oils and glucosamine and yet it never goes away. It just kind of fluctuates and it often pops.

I have the same problem on my left knee but very minor. I think has to do with my left leg is my strong leg which I use to push forward on heavy jerks ext. Stuff that has helped is narrowing my stance in squats and alternating leg for jerks. I use to go wider and my knees would come in on heavy sets which doesn't happen as much now that more narrow. Also when did jerks only would push my left leg forward on every rep.
You could have damaged it though on bad set just be careful and watch your form is most important. Also stretch it out a lot look up various stretches can do for knees.

Well, Saturday is apparently a no-go. I usually do my heavy lifts at a good gym but can't because my knee is apparently hurt. It is stiff and sore and I'm limping a little. I'm icing it and taking epsom salt baths as well as extra glucosamine and fish oil.
Likely I hurt it last week when I was sick/under-recovered. My back is also acting-up too. I think it might be the split-jerking as it is on the side I split forwards with.
I need to figure out how to train without hurting myself every damn month which causes me to lose a week. I do not know how to cycle training and don't have a coach. Any suggested reading?

if think its so bad can't even do squats without pain then maybe check out doctor. I take super cissus-powder version for cheaper- anytime my joints are hurting and seems to help a lot I just dump a ton of it in my protein shakes. Tastes like ass but feel helps my joints along with lots of water fish oil and stretching after I take a shower ext.
I don't have coach either, I Just go as heavy as I can in either cleans or snatch-usually snatch- followed by power version of the lift with lighter weights then some heavy pulls and squats. Try and throw in upper body like jerks and overhead presses even bench 2x a week also. My form improved over the months just by doing the lifts so much and watching videos ext and having my friend- who is coached to do the lifts for track and field- workout with me once in awhile.
I think its best to find your own way though I started out 3x a week doing just power snatches and cleans 5x5 heavy as could go along with 5x5 squats as heavy as could go-doing back and upperbody bodybuilding stuff on other 2 days with 2 days rest-. Which has evolved to everyday full lifts-alternate snatch or clean- as heavy as can go followed by volume, pulls and squats. I think the major key is just to push yourself as hard as possible always and make sure doing full lifts and squats. Also try to realize where you need help and do supplementary exercises to help those areas.
Hit 85% today in snatch after missing it last 2 days but was so sore from heavy volume other day that only did two lighter sets of 3 reps and finished off with some squats to heavy single and 2 lighter sets of 5. Might go back do some upper body in a bit.

just out of curiosity, do you think supplementing with green tea would help you guys recover from the knee problems and aches you guys r having from doing heavy squats and high volume work. personally i tried doing high volume work with the squats and i couldn't handle it so i reduced my volume drastically but i instead did squats more frequently and it works for me. i guess my body doesn't respond to high volume work.

there is a adaption period to he high volume at first you will feel horrible and joints will ache. But it will drastically reduce as your body gets used to it. I mean I still get sore and feel beat up from time to time but no real pain in joints that had when first started going really high volume.
I only drink tea and water-well and alcohol but limit that only too weekends- so it could help me. I think green tea tastes really good and has many benefits so I drink it as much as I can.

Say you max out FS at 125kg a given week. Then you add band tension so at the bottom of the squat the weight is 125kg but at the top the band tension makes the weight equivalent to 170kg, why even bother doing regular front squats anymore?
I've had the burps with cheap brands and not so cheap brands.

Not many of my friends really busted my balls about being into lifting, when I first got into it years ago, some of them said I took steroids lol, even though I wasn't even particularly big.
Surprisingly, the biggest opponent to my lifting is my father, always making fun of me, saying he can't believe he raised a son into something so mindless, that machines are able to lift weights heavier than any human could, stuff like that, lol.
Whatever, just it's not a big deal.

I'm deffenitely in dark times right now. Been doing the broz method-tweaked slightly not as crazy- for last 2-3 months and now really starting to feel destroyed. My whole body is breaking down my back hurts just standing get muscle cramps easily if sit weird way or straighten my leg, flex my calf ext. My knees ache just walking and even sitting surprisingly feel fine when squat or do lifts though since have adrenalin pumping. Elbow aches also sometimes feels like going to break doing snatches. Takes me at least 10 -20 minutes to warm up since its physically impossible to get into squat position unless really warmed up since so stiff. I seem to get new calluses every workout and get massive ones ripped every few weeks more so recently. I trip over my feet routinely because my legs are so sore hard to walk. Been bitch in gym recently because feel so burned out mentally hard to want to do squats after missing lifts and feeling like want to pass out. Might go up to like 60% of my max squat and that feel pretty heavy. The skin of my shoulders and back is raw and callused from so much front squats and back sqauts routinely peels and feels bruised.
basically everything hurts and mentally feel like crap all I want to do is sleep and eat.
I can't hit heavy weights right now but going to try to push the volume more and see how that goes for next few weeks and hopefully heal up some.

Squat for volume, do power snatch and power clean and jerk. It will be less load on your joints, more on your muscles. When you hit some volume PR's and your body feels ready, move back into the maxes. To give you perspective, I still cannot do the volume after maxes consistently and I've been through the dark times before. Now I adapt quicker. On my first run through it took a few months just to do volume work after sort of consistent. When you really feel like crap, just squat enough to get your legs warmed up, empty bar snatch and clean and jerk, and back extensions.
After a while you get pretty numb to it and only feel random stabbing pain in the middle of the night when you are asleep, whenever you take a day off, or have to sit down for longer than an hour without moving your legs around.

hmm like the idea to do more power movements been neglecting them in general so be good to do them again. I would be doing lighter load too so be better on joints. Also probably hit prs in them since haven't done power movements other then in warm up for months.

I like sets of 5 a lot for volume work. For more intensity, sets of 3 work well too, Greg Everett seems to be a fan of 10 sets of 3, especially in regards to building mass. Then there is also Dan John who likes 3 sets of 8. Play around a little and see what works/what you like best.

yeah I think going to try 5x5 today haven't done more then 3 reps in a long time. Usually warm up doing 3's then move to doubles then singles then done. Going to start with 70% of max today on 5x5 which should be solid workout. Took last 2 days off from back squats-did really light front squats sine knees were bothering me a lot with heavy weight- so this be good way to get used to back squat again.

I like sets of 5 a lot for volume work. For more intensity, sets of 3 work well too, Greg Everett seems to be a fan of 10 sets of 3, especially in regards to building mass. Then there is also Dan John who likes 3 sets of 8. Play around a little and see what works/what you like best.
on tuesday and thursday's i do max back squat (or atleast to 90%) followed by 10 sets x 3 reps of front squat at c&j max. for some reason, no matter how much weight i put on the bar, im just not good at doing 4 + reps on anything; except for benchpress. i can do 6-7reps at 80-85%max on that but when i do leg strengthening exercises like squat or deadlift i can only do 3-5-reps at 80-85%max. lol, its funny how the exercise i dont do often is the one i have more strength endurance on.

5x5 squats other day at 70% were easy going to try 85% with 10x3 to get used to heavier weights again while still doing volume.

yeah if you get used to doing doubles and triples, sets of even 5 are a chore. I guess its more of a conditioning workout or something. If you keep at sets of 5, you'll get used to it again, only takes a day or 2. Then you can go for sets of 8 at 75%! [evil face]

Yeah the ones with good clean form were really fun to watch. Some of them who failed though Im sure could have completed if they went down farther or not so far and squatted more. Really from what I noticed(no pro here) most of those failed at the bottom of the snatch or clean were more overhead/front squatting could have done some good.

use 90% of your real max. i did that and the introductory and first 2 weeks of the base feel light (but somewhat challenging) and then the 3rd and 4th week really pick up and get heavy. then after that the 2 week switching you feel like your going to lose all your gains after the first week goes by and all your doing is light stuff. stick to the plan though. once the intense phase comes along everything will be heavy and youll be glad you did 90%
i put 40lbs on my max - went from 355 to 405 at 156lbs

Well, much to my irritation, I think I might just end up taking the rest of the month off from lifting. My knee was getting better, tried to go heavy and its kind of tweaked, but not as bad as several weeks ago.
I will definitely take the week off from all lifting. Next week I might do something, maybe some dumbbell, pretty-boy crap. I may even do some pulls if I feel up to it, maybe some benching or something.
The pain is now in the inner left knee, about the size of a couple silver dollars. It is stiff and a bit sore but not terrible as with several weeks ago. The PCL (back of the knee) is just a tad bit stiff but not bad at all. It's maybe 10-15% of what it was two or three weeks ago.

use slightly lighter then real max for first run through it
intense phase is really hard and I missed several lifts then. Base is very doable. I wouldn't do any other squat stuff then smolov. I didn't even do oly lifts during the program-other then switching phase- and just ran that program while doing bodybuilding upperbody on days didn't squat to try maximize gains.
I don't remember exactly gains got but think was around 70lbs for full program was extremely happy with gains made and maintained 50lbs of that about month returning to normal program.

hah, valid point.
As for the others I had heard about the 90% of max thing, but wasn't sure if it was common or not.
I might just run the base cycle now, or smolov jr since the full 12 week program will run into christmas and new years. Figuring based on how I like it, I can run the full program next year after the holidays.
looks like I could possibly run smolov jr with the full max, where as with regular smolov it might be a better idea to use max - 20lbs.

I found russian squat program to be the easiest of the 3 but still gave good results

base is hard but much easier then intense phase of smolov which I think starts to really push the heavy weights. I used my real max after base for intense phase though so could have contributed to how hard was. But yeah doing 5x5 with 90% of new max after already being fatigued from weeks of hard squatting is not fun.

Yeah I don't think I'll ever do intense phase of smolov again I missed several lifts then and had awful form on several heavier lifts and felt could have injured myself many times.

back squats begun to agrivate right side of my right knee yet front sqauts don't seem to bother it at all. Looks like going to take some time off bs and focus primarily on front sqauts.
For some reason my bs stance is more narrow then my front squat stance so feel it in my hips more then used too does anyone else have similar problem? My front squat is absolutely pathetic though so be good to close the gap.
Generally what % should your fs be of your bs? Mine is literally around 65% of my max bs which is pretty sad.

The stance usually has to do with the back squat relating to the pull whereas the front squat is the recovery position.

in terms of oly lifting the back squat should be narrower. I think a good ratio should b fs 80% of bs. My bs is 365lbs(385on a good day). My fs is 315lbs. Dont know the ratio.

First competition of the year last weekend - Ontario Open
A pretty small comp but some good strong lifters including Valérie Lefebvre - a 69kg girl from Montreal who snatched 92kg and clean and jerked 118kg!
I'd been back to training for 4 weeks after taking almost 3 months off with injuries, but still lifted pretty well.
Snatch: 93, 98x, 100x
I opened up light to get some confidence going, as I hadn't competed since Canadian Nationals 6 months ago. The judges were being tough on me for pressing out my snatches, turning down my 100 was pretty crazy, see if you can spot it on the video
Clean and Jerk: 120, 125, 128x(jerk)
I wasn't feeling 'on' in the CJ this competition, but even lifting poorly I'm always good for 125 haha

Is the wider grip in the snatch harder for the upper back? I have always felt alot weaker in the snatch pull compared to clean pull, and I think it might be because of my weak upper back. Wondered about this long time ago.

No it's not. You have to practice them. If you go to wide, your shoulder may not be strong enough for bigger weights. So, you need to find a comfortable happy medium. The rule of the thumb when in the Snatch position and standing the bar should be 4-6 inches above your head.
As far as your back goes, it would most likely be a weak lower back. Escpecially on your spinal erectors. I'd do some good RDL's from a deficit and seated goodmornings.

you might be throwing them down instead of dropping them causing them to bounce higher? Also lighter weight will bounce higher if you drop them quicker then heavy weight which wont be able to bring down as quick.
sometimes might just be wood platform without rubber also

It's b/c of the bumpers/weight/surface you're dropping it on.
RobbieWalden
11-14-2010, 02:55 PM
It's a combination of a few things. . .
First, the lighter weights will always bounce higher. Also, cheaper plates will bounce higher as well as the black thick bumper plates. The Eliko Colored bumpers won't bounce very high even when light.
Second, it depends on the platform.
Lastly, the speed of the bar as well as how much you assist/control the bar on it's way down.

Yeah lower back might be weak too. To give you an idea, when I hang power (very high catch) cleaned 100 kg I could snatch 85 kg. I never had the best technique in the snatch but 90 kg just felt damn heavy when I tried it, and I couldn't move it much.

Got 150 kg for a +3 kg PR in the back squat.
This should go up even more as I can't snatch or full clean at all, and can't power clean heavy for a good while as my right wrist is banged up. I'm going to be doing the texas Method for a good 6-8 weeks with some light power cleans, some power jerks, and snatch pulls in there.

Oh yeah. Just got out the gym. I finally got a 200kg total. Worked out this morning but had to wait 4 my friend give me a ride home, just now, so i decided to max out since i had nothing 2 do. Did a 88kg snatch & 114kgc&j. Was pissed though when i went into my bag and realized that i picked up my gameboy instead of my camcorder. Will update my signiture after i c the harry p movie. Wow, i just realized this post made me sound like a 12 year old kid ;p.

I missed my first clean+Jerk today.
I have no idea what I was thinking.
Current PR was 60 kilo, just destroyed 80 kilos but had some poor rack position and it wasn't pretty
So I loaded 100 kilos (why? I dunno) and attempted it. I think the pull felt great, and I even rode the bar down pretty well, but I just couldn't get my elbows up and my hips were really far back in the bottom and it destroyed my wrist. I could barely pick up one side of the bar to unload it afterwards. Any strategies of wisdom? Other than don't attempt a 20 kilo PR right after making an easy but ugly 10kilo PR

thought I had it fixed tuesday.
lifted yesterday, fine through 70kg, 80kg some arm pull, crushed 84, and then totally sucked with 85, and 70.
looks like a fukload of lifts from the hang for today, and probably some "power shrugs" as I was hitting big cleans when I included shrugging before.

I want to get into IP (Intellectual Property) law, but am really open to almost any area. Main advice I have is to make sure that is what you want to do. You don't have to decide on an area of law to practice in, but I wouldn't go to law school without knowing you really want to go. It is pretty hard and really time consuming. Otherwise, if you go, good luck, it will be rewarding!!

your prob right about the snatches too, I was just amazed at how fast he worked through sets with a lot of weight on the bar. A goal in 2011 for me is to work up to max/work sets faster, so as to get more quality work done.

So I haven't done a front squat in over 4 months and focusing heavily on the bs and now I think I have caused some muscle imbalance my quads seem a lot smaller yet my ass/hamstrings are huge and I'm starting to get some pain in my knee also.
Anyone know of a good squat program that isn't smolov that can jump start my front squat a bit? I think I am going to focus on just front squats for a bit
My front squat is pathetic right now tried doing a front squat the other day and 200lbs under my back squat that I rep felt really heavy.
Also missing lifts more forward then used to and think front squats will help with being more upright during the lifts.

back squats work your quads and hamstrings/glutes equally, so to think you have a muscle imbalance is silly. If anything, front squats would cause more of an imbalance as they are quad/glute heavy, lacking hamstring action.
tbh, when my backsquat has gone up my front squat has followed, and I kind of thought this was always the case. Maybe your upperback/core is weak or underutilized?
regardless, solution would be to do more front squats. I like triples, more reps can exhaust the smaller muscles in your upper back, possibly leading to injury.
Well hello there OL'rs, dropping in to say hi :)

I think it might be the way I squat though also
I don't have the bar really high on my traps like some oly lifters and tend to have more forward lean but it works for me and I feel it in my glutes and hamstrings more.
yeah thats what I thought also thats why i worked the bs heavily for last few months figuring my front squat would go up also which was not the case at all. My front sqaut sucks now. I utilize the stretch reflex more when i bs though then front squat which might help.
I do a lot of heavy pulls already that will work my hamstrings plenty so doubt working on the front squat a lot will effect that issue plus I feel that they are way stronger anyways from all the bs done which I feel targeted my hams/glutes more anyways.
Also read articles recently on how front squat translates better to the lifts then the bs and that Chinese/korean lifters focus more on front squats.

Well, this week I am going to go to the Athletic Therapy clinic at my local school and have my knees look at.
Although not as bad, my left knee is bugging me again after two weeks of full snatches and cleans. I would suspect there is some kind of damage because it doesn't feel like normal soreness.
Provided it's just a matter of taking it easy/rehabbing the knee, I might switch over to the old-school, funky split snatches and cleans. For whatever reason, split snatches have always felt quite comfortable to do, though I have only done them with lighter weights for something different.

Thanks :) it's really pissing me off, still not up to the full movements yet, doing PC's today and my legs and shoulders are sore as **** this should be fun.
I've come back from a layoff when I was bodybuilding and that was a piece of cake in comparison!

I know the feeling. This is the first week I've been able to really train again since I got to Fort Benning. I won't have too much longer though since I have another course coming up. These last months my strength has been on a roller coaster ride depending on how much sleep, time in the gym, and field training we were doing. Very frustrating.

Well, I have had to cut my training to 3x's per week, and may have to cut to 2x's per week for the next couple of weeks as I lead up to the Bar exam. I really don't like taking more than one day off at a time, but haven't had a choice, as I have been too busy studying!!

Hopefully you can still work your legs someway either through hack squats, leg press, or even squats if possible to support the bar.

my stupid gym had a crossfit workout that had tire tosses ( like regular car tires ) so i thought i could warm up doing it, but there was no technique at all to it, it slipped out of my one hand, and all the weight went on my right shoulder
like 8 people got injured at the gym that week doing crossfit. i hate crossfit. sometimes i will just do those exercises at a relaxed pace to warm up. i couldn't even do that.
it's 2 days later and it doesn't feel any better. great. fml
yeah i can't support any weight on my shoulder so i might just have to do leg presses and cycle for the time being. running hurts the shoulder, hell, even walking does, but i can go on the stationary cycle with my arm in a sling and do that, and go into the leg press machine with the arm in a sling and do that as well.
so much for competing in march, new goal: be able to compete again

just do what the anime companies do: put a chick with an unproportionally large chest to everything else size. it works all the time. still dont understand how they rationalize that?!?! but, hey, it works.

i have a different view point. if marzoyan (ARM) is healthy and makes it to 2012 i think hell get it. if he's not healthy then, imo, its a toss up btween lin qingfeng and liao hu; and bronze will go btween either miculescu or martin (both ROU) depending on who's heathly or who they send. either way these r my top pics as it stands now.

Did they
a) Show some effort in manufacturing aka calibration or

Well I have yet to post on here so I might as well introduce myself. I've been oly lifting on and off for a year but right now I am in my 5th week of being coached and focusing mainly on oly lifting. My current totals are 100kg snatch and 123kg clean and jerk. They have been going up every heavy week of training, so hopefully I will have some good numbers to put up by the time collegiate nationals roles around.
